Unable to mount flash drive w/ OS 9.2.2 and Powerbook G3

I've upgraded my G3 Pismo up to OS 9.2.2. However, the system won't mount a USB flash drive.
Here's a breakdown of the problem(s):
1) Insert flash drive, but flash drive won't appear on desktop.
2) Check System Profiler, and system freezes.
3) Remove flash drive from USB hub, and system unfreezes. System Profiler now has a listing for "Sandisk Cruzer Mini" in the USB -- even though the flash drive is no longer there.
4) Check extensions. There is no USB Mass Storage Support extension. Download from Apple site, the USB Mass Storage Support 1.3.5 extension.
5) Attempt to install this extension. Won't let me do it. Gives the message "This program cannot be run on your computer. See the documentation for details."
6) Check documentation. I have the requisite system: Powerbook G3 and OS 9.2.2.
7) Attempt to reinstall OS 9.2.2, as perhaps that might fix the problem.
8) Cannot re-install OS 9.2.2. Gives the message: "The application program 9.2.2.smi etc. cannot be opened because an error of type -39 occurred."
9) Clueless at this point.

Hi, BGBchewy -
Re the USB Mass Storage Support item, the ReadMe that accompanies it and comprises the info on the download page states -
    "Requirements
Mass Storage Support 1.3.5 requires Mac OS 8.6. You do not need to install this software if you have installed Mac OS 9."
Ditto the later version of that software, USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1.

Re the -39 error and the OS 9.2.2 download update, that error is most commonly caused by Stuffit Expander intruding where it should not. The download is in a .smi (self-mounting image) format, a format generated by Apple's Disk Copy. Stuffit Expander has ShrinkWrap technology built-in, which allows it to mount some kinds of disk images - but not .smi ones. Yet ShrinkWrap tries to - hence the error message.
The solution - double-click Stuffit Expander, and open its Preferences (under the File menu). Select "Disk Images" from the list on the left, then turn off (uncheck) "Mount Disk Images". Quit Stuffit Expander.

  • Mounting flash drives in  solaris failsafe mode

    Hello all,
Suppose our system has crashed and we cannot login in solaris normal mod. But we need the data.
I have done the following exercises to take the back up of the file system.
1:- logged in fail safe mode.
2:- mounted the file system in to a mount point.
3:- took the backup of the file system using cpio command as /a/man.back.
4:- tried this command "mount -F pcfs /dev/c4t0d0p0:1 /a/flash" to mount the flash drive. But it failed.
How can we mount the flash drive in fail safe mode?
or, Is there any other way to take the backup of the file system to an external device to restore after re-installing the OS.
I would greatly appreciate it, if you could help me to rectify this problem.
    Thank You
    Regards,
    Sajan.

Thanks, macbig...no joy yet, but definitely a helpful link.
I've confirmed via System Profiler on laptop #3 that my external USB drive is formatted as MS-DOS FAT32, so mount_msdos seems like the right utility to use. (The drive shows up there as /dev/disk1s1.) Meanwhile, "ls /dev/disk*" on the problem machine returns the following:
    /dev/disk0 /dev/disk0s1 /dev/disk0s2 /dev/disk1 /dev/disk1s1 /dev/disk1s2 /dev/disk1s3 /dev/disk2 /dev/disk2s1
I've created /Volumes/rescue as a mount point and tried most of those devices with "/sbin/mount_msdos [device] /Volumes/rescue", with the following results:
    /dev/disk1:
    mount_msdos: Unsupported sector size (0)
    /dev/disk1s1:
    mount_msdos: Unsupported sector size (1)
    /dev/disk1s2:
    mount_msdos: /dev/disk1s2: Bad file descriptor
    /dev/disk1s3:
    mount_msdos: Unsupported sector size (0)
    /dev/disk2:
    mount_msdos: Unsupported sector size (64543)
    /dev/disk2s1:
kextload: cannot resolve dependencies for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/msdosfs.kext
    error loading extension /System/Library/Extensions/msdosfs.kext
mount_msdos: msdos filesystem is not available
Based on this, I'm guessing that disk2s1 is the device I want. Unfortunately, when I try to poke around in /System/Library/Extensions, I'm getting I/O errors...gah. I have a bad feeling about this.

  • Automatically mount flash drives in AwesomeWM

In Gnome when you put in a flash drive, it automatically mounts it in /media, and it's owned by me - so you can open a file on the flash drive in a file manager, the file isn't read only.  Is there anyway to do this in AwesomeWM?

You could just run thunar as a daemon and use it's volume management system.
    pacman -Sy thunar thunar-volman
    Start it with:
    thunar --daemon
It will automatically mount removable drives.

  • Unable detect a flash drive.

i got this mp3 player that acts as a flash drive (samsung yp-t7f). it cannot be detected by my apple ibook. is there anyway to solve this problem? by installing drivers? thx.

no, its not detected in the disk utilities, when i use the usb cable to connect to the player, it connects and then automatically disconnects itself. i think it is incompatible with mac devices. thank you anyway.

  • How to format flash drive to be compatible with Mac and PC

Hey guys, I was stupid and formatted my 8G flash drive to a different format by accident. Not FAT32 which it was originally. It originally worked find with my Mac and PC. I can't get it back now. I went into Disk Utility and the only way I can format it back is to MS-DOS(FAT) and all the other Apple formats. When I erase it to MS-DOS(FAT) and plug it into my PC it comes up and wants to format it to a 200MB FAT32 patition?? How can I solve this? Thanks

    Hi,
FAT32 (called MS-DOS in OSX Disk Utility) is the file system to use for compatibility with Mac and PC.
The "200MB partition" message you get also indicates that you changed the partition scheme on the flash drive to GPT (GUID Partition Table).
Use Disk Utility to verify this and if needed change the partition scheme back to MBR (Master Boot Record).

  • Unable to install flash player!! Have tried uninstalling and all other trouble shooting options listed. The installer starts working, closes safari successfully, then shortly after, it stops installing and just states "installation failed. Click 'finish'

I have Safari 8.0.5 and have a mac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.3
The issues started when entering a site that required flash. I received a message that I had to upgrade flash and when attempting to upgrade the system crashed. I then tried to uninstall and reinstall and now get the below error, which directs me back to the install site which starts the process all over again and I'm not getting anywhere!!! Please help!!!

    Hi karis20774009,
To accurately identify the issue, and help us improve the online installer experience, we would really appreciate it if you could do the following for us:
Perform a speed test on your internet connection.  There are a myriad of sites that do this, for example, www.speedtest.net,www.speakeasy.net/speedtest, www.dslreports.com/speedtest, and your internet provider may also have a page in their support/help section to do a speedtest.
    Goto Location --> ~/Librarly/Logs/Adobe_ADMLogs
Upload the two log files (Adobe_ADM.log and Adobe_GDE.log) using the instructions posted here https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1408375
Reply back to this thread with the results of the download speed test and the URL to the uploaded log files.
In the mean time, the offline installer is posted at Installation problems | Flash Player | Mac page in the 'Still having problems' section should work for you.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Failure to mount a flash drive after updates?

    Hey everyone,
I was able to mount flash drives (etc...) for the duration of my install, and sometime in the last week or so I've become unable to do so. Its gotta be because I updated something and I broke it, no idea what or when this happened because I havent tried mounting any media in a while. The flash drive works on other computers and i get this error message from thunar:
    Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.17" (uid=1000 pid=3605 comm="exo-mount) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=1108 comm="/usr/sbin/hald)).
Any idea what I could do to fix it?
    Thanks for your time.

I see from an older post someone had something simular: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=325121
    Suggestions:
    * Make sure you are in the 'storage' group still.
    * Do the command 'fdisk -l', does the device come up (mine comes up in the /dev/sdb disk and below my main Arch Linux setup)
    Hope this helps!

  • Flash drive no longer mounts

As of last night, it always did, but today, I see nothing on the desktop or finder sidebar to indicate the flash drive's mounted. My MBP mounts other flash drives thru the same usb port and mp3 players, just not this one anymore. And I see it on our windows computer. Whasup widat?

Ick. I had that happen with a set of drives last week. In my case it turns out the adapter I was using was bad. In your case there's fewer options (since you say other drives work) - it's either a bad connection or a bad drive. As I said, Windows will detect drives if they are just plugged in, even if they aren't functional. Flash drives don't last forever... Do you have a USB extension cord to see if it's just a bad connection?
You can peruse the following but it doesn't sound like one of these issues.

  • Irregular flash drive mounting

Is there a USB equivalent to "SCSI Mounter" (from way back when) that lets you actively search for USB drives and mount them? I have an Adaptec Duoconnect Firewire+USB2 PCI card. I prefer to use this because of the USB2 capability. On occasion I have problems mounting flash drives with the card. I have two 1 GB flash drives, SanDisk Cruzer, and Imation. I have two cables plugged into two of the card's ports to allow me to plug in the drives from the front of the computer. Today after the computer had been asleep for a few hours I tried plugging in the drives after waking up the computer, and they would not mount (tried repeatedly plugging and unplugging). However, I plugged in one drive in the native USB port on the back of the computer and it did mount. I then tried the same drive in the cable and it still wouldn't mount. I restarted the computer and they both mounted in their cables. Sometimes the Imation drive won't mount in one of the cables but will in the other. After restarting today it would mount in the cable in which it usually won't. At first I wondered if it was a power supply issue, or cable resistance, but I changed nothing other than restarting the computer. As I said, this isn't the first time I have had problems with the Imation drive mounting, but I thought it might just be a problem with that drive on that cable (worn connectors). Now I'm thinking it is more a software issue. I can't say for sure if it's just a post-sleep thing, though I often leave my computer switched on 24/7 so I' usually using it in a post-sleep mode.
I don't see anything on Adaptec's website about Mac drivers so I don't think I can try that.
    Brian

Actually, the drives are disconnected from the Mac when it goes to sleep (I already worked out that problem in another post). The real problem I had with leaving the drives plugged in was if I left the Imation drive plugged in and the computer went to sleep the computer would not wake again and I had to hard boot (restart button). I didn't seem to have this problem when I left the SanDisk drive plugged in, though of course the computer would give me a warning about the drive when I woke the computer.
This seems to be more a matter of maybe the card, or parts of it, not waking from sleep consistently. The card works with all drives in all ports when I first start up or reboot the computer. After it has been to sleep a few times the Imation drive has problems first. Last night was the first time I couldn't get either drive to work with the card until restarting, then both drives were recognized. I just started up my computer now and all drives work in all ports.

  • Move a big file from a mac system to a windows 8 laptop usb usb flash drive

Hello i am using a 32 gb flash drive to copy a 10gb file from mac os x to my flash drive. Then i want to insert that flash drive to my windows 8 pc and store it there.
I cant use a network connection to transfer files because i dont have a ethernet cable or an network connection yet. So i must use a smart procedure for making my mac communicate with my pc at home. I cant use any other types of sharing methods except for a usb flash drive. So i know that the mac cannot detect NTFS filesystems and i cant use FAT32 even though mac recognizes it because FAT 32 is unable to store large files abotu 10GB of size. Now i have to use i think ext3 or ext4 or also HFS but when i successfully copy the file from mac to flash drive then insert it into my pc, the windows 8 OS will not detect the windows pc because i dont think windows is made to detect these filesystems by default.
So i have tried using, HFS explorer and ext2/ext3/ext4 volume manager and ext2exploer or GPARTED live cd's latest version's copy and paste functions but they seem to not work propely and there is a problem, i cannot  see any flash drive in HFS explorer even though my drive is formatted as hfs.
So i need a program that can detect HFS or ext3/4 formatted flash drives and is able to copy a file from there straight to my windows 8 NTFS hard drive or a folder in it.
I have checked my firewall settings and defense settings. I am the administrator of my pc and i have even removed the windows password and the mac one but still i get lots of issus JUST to copy a file between a pc and a mac. Remmember that i have to copy files FROM a mac system running snow leopard to my windows 8 pc not the OTHER WAY were i have to copy from the windows to a mac.
Please tell me as much as possable about software out there and tell me software that costs money. I am able to buy any good software for doing this.
    Thanks in advance.

Take the flash drive to the PC and format it as exFAT.

  • USB flash drive not being recognized as a startup disk?

Hi everyone, I've been searching for similar questions but haven't found one that exactly matches my experience.  So, I'm going to try and explain my issue in hopes that others may be able to help.
I'm trying to create a bootable flash drive from which I can install lion, and eventually Mountain Lion when it is released onto my main hard drive.  My main reason for doing this is  to have a way that I can perform a clean install of the operating system.  Yes, I know I am old fashioned, but sometimes I prefer clean operating system installs rather than upgrading.  In any case, I have downloaded the lion setup file from the Mac app store (Install Mac OS X Lion.app) and am following the directions given on this page to do this procedure.  These directions are consistent with directions found on various other sources online.  Having this file saved to my hard drive, I was able to find and extract the disk image file from the package InstallESD.dmg to another folder.  Once extracted, I plugged in my flash drive and attempted to use disk utility to restore the disk image to my flash drive.  I selected the dmg file as my source and the flash drive as the destination.  I then clicked restore and was warned that all data on the flash drive would be erased while the disk image was restored to my flash drive.  I was prepared for this, so I allowed the process to continue, and it appeared to proceed with no problem.  When disk utility was finished, I did a quick look at my flash drive using finder and confirmed that it did in fact appear to contain a disk image of the .dmg file.  Here's where things get interesting however.
When I go to system preferences and choose startup disk, my flash drive is not listed as an optional disk from which to boot, only my hard drive ("macintosh HD").  When I restart and hold down the option key, my flash drive is not listed as a startup disk either.  I know that the non-intel based macs are not capable of booting from USB, but this is certainly not my issue as I have an intel macbook pro, mid 2009 model.  My flash drive is about 4 or 5 years old; it is a PNY Technologies Attaché 16 gb flash drive.  I have no trouble viewing and transferring files to and from the flash drive, the only issue is that my computer seems to refuse to recognize it as a startup disk.  Are there certain flash drives which do not support booting?  This would normally seem more like a computer issue rather than a flash drive issue, but most people seem to have no problem doing what I'm trying to do.  Unfortunately I do not have another flash drive with which to test this, and I didn't really feel like buying another flash drive just to test this out if in fact this is not a flash drive issue.  I am planning to upgrade to the macbook pro retina soon which of course does not have an optical drive, which is one of the reasons I would like to get this working.  Can anyone think of something else I can try?  Is it more likely an issue with the macbook pro or the flash drive?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

The format says Mac OS Extended.  All of the settings were set during the disk image restore process.  Even if I format the flash drive as extended journaled or some other format, all of these settings are reverted when I do the restore from the disk image.  I will just copy all of the information that disk utility has so that you can see it.

  • T400s Linux/Windows dual boot with Linux from Esata Flash Drive

This project is about a dual boot Windows/Linux system without using the normal dual boot changes in the bootloader of the windows hard drive. When I started this I found bits and pieces of information on the web but no complete description so I wrote this post.
I have done a dual boot system on my previous Thinkpad where I had partitioned the hard drive between Linux and windows. For this project I wanted to leave the windows hard drive absolutely intact and unaltered, and boot Linux from a flash drive in the esata port on the back of the T400s. Obviously this uses the F12 boot list function key to boot from the flash. The advantage of this is that Windows is totally unaltered and when I need Linux, I plug in the esata flash drive, hit F12 during the boot cycle and select booting from the esata flash drive. The reason for Esata rather than USB is simply speed. I have a nice fast Linux installation.
I used the OCZ esata flash drive but suspect any of the alternatives will work. It did not need the accessory usb cable because the Thinkpad powered the esata flash directly.
To boot from the esata drive I had to make the following changes in the bios
I left the esata flash plugged in as I went into the bios
Bios>config>Serial ATA and changed the Sata controller mode option to compatibility
Restart and back into the Bios
Bios>startup>boot - in my case the esata flash drive showed up as ATA HDD2 and was excluded from the boot order so I had to un-exclude it and move it to the point in the boot order that I wanted.
Next I downloaded a linux installation iso and put it on a CD - in my case opensuse. Then booted from the CD
From now on this instructions are specific to opensuse and yast but can be generalized to whatever Linux is being used.
In my case yast came up with a good set of suggestions for automatically partitioning the flash drive but then crashed during the partitioning itself. So I rebooted and specified the partitions manually.
A fat32 partition left as a partition which both windows and Linux could see (in my case about 20% of the drive) (/dev/sdb1)
An extended partition with the remainder of the drive (/dev/sdb2) which contains the following logical partitions
        A linux Swap partition of 2GB (/dev/sdb5)
A linux /home partition –the remainder of the drive (/dev/sdb6)
        A linux /root partition of 8GB (/dev/sdb7)
Yast automatically suggested mount points of C,D,E for the windows partitions. Unfortunately because of the way the Thinkpad hard drive was laid out Yast had C assigned the ThinkPad Service partition and D assigned to the SW_Preload (or main windows partition). However there was an edit function that allows for the reversal of those mount points so that the windows C drive is mounted in Linux as Windows/C thereby avoiding confusion. I had already backed up and removed the Thinkpad factory install data so I did not have to deal with that. Yast suggested Windows/E for the mount point of the FAT32 partition on the flash drive, which I accepted.
The yast install configurator made all this manual selection easy, and after the manual configuration the partitioning worked perfectly.
Next step was Linux user configuration which went fine
    Next was booting.
    In the section management tab
delete the windows 1 and 2 options (since we are not dual booting directly)
In the boot loader installation tab
uncheck boot from mbr ( this stops the install from installing Grub and dual boot on the windows c drive
check boot from root partition (this installs grub and all associated files in the Linux root partition (/dev/sdb6)
I believe that the correct procedure at this point is to click Boot Loader installation details which will bring up the Grub device map. In the device map there will be a line for the fixed hard drive (aka the windows drive) and a line for the esata flash drive. When the installer started up these were in hard drive and esata drive order. However when we boot directly from the flash the esata drive will be grub drive hd0 and the fixed hard drive will be grub hd1. The device map order needs to be changed to reflect this ie the esata drive should be first not second.
I did not do this and ended up initially doing Grub command line editing to boot and later manually editing the grub files using information I had previously learned the hard way and through google.
At this point let the installer go ahead and install Linux. After doing this it should come back and tell you to reboot. Do not do it yet because we need to install the MBR into the flash drive.
I suspect that there is a way of doing this in Yast running from the Live CD but it was not obvious to me so I used the manual method that I have used before.
    Open a root terminal
Mount /dev/sdb6 to /mnt/sdb6 (my linux root)
    Touch /mnt/sdb6/boot/grub/flag
The purpose of this is when we go looking later at the grub command prompt we need an easy to find unique file
Start grub and do the following
    #grub
                grub> find /boot/grub/flag
(hd1,5)    -- the result of the find in my example
grub> root (hd1,5)   -- using the result of the find in my example
grub> setup (hd1)   -- install mbr -- my example parameters - if you get this wrong you will trash some other drive!!!
                      hopefully grub announces success
                grub> quit
Reboot and select the flash drive. In my case I still had the grub devicemap wrong and had to edit the grub commands during boot to tell grub how to find the correct partition and then edit them again after booting
Typical linux install issues that we all always seem to have and can be solved with a little (or a lot of) google research.
As I said at the beginning I now have an untouched windows installation and a nice fast Linux installation. I hope that this will be of some use to someone.

    Hi chrissh
i tried this exact procedure... on the exact same notebook (T400s). However, as soon as I set the
Bios>config>Serial ATA to "compatibility", I cannot use my default Windows installation! I immediately get the "blue screen of death".
I doubt I did anything differently since this is the first step of your procedure and my laptop is brand new!
    any idea?

  • Problems mounting USB drives

I am having some problems getting USB flash drives to (auto) mount on my system.
In the past, when I plugged in the device (a simple USB flash drive), it showed up in Thunar and I could click on it to mount it. Now nothing shows up in thunar when I plug in the device. dmesg shows the following, so I know the device is being recognized:
usb 2-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 14
but it isn't being assigned to /dev/sd*. fdisk -l also doesn't show the device. lsusb shows the following for the device:
Bus 002 Device 014: ID 0781:b6b7 SanDisk Corp.
I added a udev rule to automount in /media, as per the udev wiki instructions, but that didn't do anything. Installing udisks and udiskie was similarly unhelpful. I tried this with multiple USB drives (which I both confirmed were working on other machines) so it doesn't seem to be a HW problem.
    Thanks in advance.

You might try reformatting the usb drive using Disk Utility. Use MacOS Extended(Journaled). That might help.
