Unable to play movie in iphoto 08

Ever since installing Snow Leopard (the bane of my life!) I have been unable to play the movies that I have imported to iphoto 08 from my camera. No previous problems.

Start the install process with the Snow Leopard disc and look for a Customize button in one of the first windows, probably right after the language selection window. It will be similar to the Customize button in this screenshot:
Click on it and you will be able to select just what you want to install.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

You can't play movies in iPhoto.  But, you can in quicktime, which is installed along with the OS.  Just double click on the .mov file and quicktme should start.

  • Unable to play or edit iphoto videos in imovie '11

I recently upgraded to ilife '11 and I am unable to play or edit my iphoto videos in imovie. All of my non-iphoto videos play fine however the iphoto video thumbnails appear in imovie but don't play. I've isolated it to one computer (my iMac) because the same videos play fine on my macbook pro. I've been to the apple store and on the phone with apple care but we haven't been able to solve the problem. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the iphoto library but nothing seems to work. I created a new iphoto library and imported some video into the new library and that also plays fine. Any suggestions? Do i need to create a new iphoto library and transfer all of my existing photos and videos into the new library?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you rename or move any of those files from the Finder? If not then manually check and set the preferences on the iPhoto Library folder and contents as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.

  • Unable to Play Video in iPhoto

Hi, I can't view my movies in iphoto for some reason. I used to be able to. Recent movies play but movies a few months back and earlier do not play. I tried exporting as original files to the desktop but I get a message saying "Exporting...Unable to create/..." I also tried just clicking and dragging to the desktop or to my external firewire drive, but it will not copy.
Has anyone had this problem and how can I fix it? What does this mean?
    Thanks,
    Denise

Have you installed any updates just prior to this problem starting? If so what were they and did you repair disk permissions with Disk Utility afterward?
First I start with a repair of the hard drive by booting into the system install disk that came with the computer. In the first window after the language select window go to the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility. When DU opens select the hard drive and click on the Repair Disk button. If it indicates there are repairs to be made or have been made, click on it again. Then reboot normally and run Disk Utility to repair disk permissions. Now try again.

  • HT1657 I am unable to play movie, I touch play, the screen goes black but nothing happens???

unable to get movie to start??

I have more or less the same problem - except I've been able to get it to play (once or twice) by starting it with the miniplayer instead of the main screen (huh? exactly) -- but I paused the movie and now I can't get it to start again.
Super annoying. Plus, it's interesting to me that the "help" page linked from the itunes store has no links to anything that might indicate that there might be a "problem"

  • Can't play movies in iPhoto after installing OS X Lion

I have just installed OS X Lion  and the movies in iphoto no longer will play.  I do not want to update iphoto because of problems with it.  Is there anyway around this problem?
    Cheryl

I'd ask about the JRE issue on the Using Mac OS X forum.
The videos are not necessarily gone:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Problems with playing movies in iPhoto 9 (8.1.2)

All of a sudden iPhoto is not playing movies anymore. Double click and slideshow is unfortunately not working. In the Slideshow the movies are blank. Pictures are not a problem in the Slideshow. Luckily the QT Player (version 10.0) solution is working fine, but I really liked the Slideshow option. Anyone who knows how to fix this problem?

Have you added that location to a photo that's in the book? If not then do so and see if the location will show up on the map.

  • Can't play movies from iphoto in snow leopard.

When I double click on a movie in iphoto nothing happens. But when I drag it onto quicktime it will play. Any suggestions? I'm using itunes 7.1.5 if that helps.

If you do a Command+i on a file you'll get this window:
However, changing the default application to Quicktime Player 7 does not let iPhoto open it in that application. It still opens in the new Quicktime Player app.
I found a "bug" in the new QT Player. If your have a movie at 320 x 240 QT Player opens it at 478 x 359 which is the minimum window it can be set to. That makes the playback of files less than that size pixelated/fuzzy.

  • Unable to play .mov files

I have my AppleTV looking at my Mac's iTunes to play files found in Movies.
There are a couple that do not appear in the list of movies displayed. I noticed that they are .mov files.
One is a small sized movie - 320x240 Quicktime movie file.
The other is one I was very interested in. Created with Canon 5D Mark II it created a .mov file 1920x1080 H.264 Quicktime movie file.
I noticed its seems that all the movies that are listed are mpeg-4.
    What't the issue?
    Thanks.

    See specs;
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
mov files are containers for video and can contain variously encoded formats.
You can play .mov files if they use the right codecs, but AppleTv cannot paly everything and in addition even with the correct codec, the files must be encoded within specific parameters to work.
You'll see from the specs that AppleTV cannot playback more than 720p resolution at 24fps officially - your 5DII files exceed those specs - they would need to be converted to playback.
The 'small Quicktime movie' probably uses an incompatible codec/bitrate - what is it?

    Many thanks for your response.

  • Also can't play movies in iPhoto

I'm using iPhoto 9.1.5 & have Quicktime Player 10, & still on Snow leopard.  When the movie was downloaded from my camera it showed message - "unreadable file, file could not be imported.  The file is in an unrecognised format".  Should I be able to view this & is so what do I need - another version of Quicktime maybe?  It was just a movie clip from an ordinary digital camera.
    Thanks for any help.
    Janet

It was just a movie clip from an ordinary digital camera.
Problem is: there's no such thing. Movie formats can carry movies created with any of hundreds of Codecs - so one .avi is not the same as another .avi.
    Have you installed Perian?
This adds extra codecs to QuickTime which will allow it to work with most avis. If the material is HAD and shot as AVCHD then you'll need to use iMovie for that.

  • Power PC G5 Unable to Play .MOV File with Avid DNxHD Codec

Our client is sending us .mov Quicktimes with Avid DNxHD Codec.
It wouldn't play on our Macbook Pros, but no problem, I downloaded the codec and it ran fine afterwards.
Not having the same luck with our Power Mac G5 Workstation.
It runs on Mac OS Leopard 10.5.8.
Downloaded the codec for Leopard from this link:
    http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=263545
    Nothing changed.
I play the file and all I see is black as the timeline runs.
How should I fix this issue?

The Power Mac G5 does not have an Intel Processor like the newer macs do. Could that be root of issue?
It is a definite possibility. The link you posted indicated the Mac v2.1 component was compatible with OS 10.5.5 and later which would normally imply QT 7 with or without Intel CPU. However, the editing software applications do seem to restrict their use to "Intel only" Mac systems. For instance, Pro Tools v8.3 and higher are listed as "Intel Only" software. Did try the v2.01 QT codec component or look for anything older?

  • Home Sharing issues since iTunes 11.0.5, unable to play movie/tv content it just hangs on the spinning sprocket

Every since my upgrade to iTunes 11.0.5, I have had problems with my AppleTV homesharing with iTunes.  The media, (Movies, TV Shows, etc) hangs on that spinning sprocket/gear wheel or show's the first frame of the movie and never loads or plays.  I have to continually restart the AppleTV or iTunes, sometimes even restarting my iMac or the Network Router.
Does anyone have a work around or solution to this issues, it is making me mental having to restart after each screening.
    Thanks....

    Hey Phyxius38,
Great troubleshooting so far! While you may have attempted some of these steps already, I wished to provide you with this article just in case:

  • Unable to add movies from iPhoto library

    Hi,
I bought a MacBook in last week. iMovie seems to be a very useful application. But I cant seem to add the videos from my iPhoto library to the projects. I use the Media button on the right hand side but it only shows photos. The videos are in .MPG format. I searched the forums but didn't get any conclusive answers.
Also in Movie Trailers, I cant seem to add photos also from the iPhoto library. I believe the trailers does support photos. In that case whats the workaround?
    Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure of all the video formats supported by iMovie '11, but the best format to convert to is Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). This is iMovie's preferred editing format. When AVCHD clips (and perhaps others) are imported from a camera, iMovie automatically converts them to AIC. This allows iMovie to seamlessly edit to the individual frame level. Compressed formats, like AVCHD and MPEG, don't store the full frames, but use a reference frame (key frame) at specified intervals. The data recorded between each key frame is simply a record of the change in information between those key frames. The conversion to AIC recreates all the compressed data to full frames, but results in a much larger file size (about 40 GB per hour).
To convert your .mpg files to Apple Intermediate Codec, download the free application MPEG Streamclip. Drag the .mpg files into MPEG Streamclip's work space. Go to File>Export to QuickTime and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. To do a batch conversion (multiple files/clips), go to List>Batch List and add your files to the window that appears. I haven't done this for a while, but I believe those instructions are correct.
Download MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 here:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
To import the converted files into iMovie, in iMovie's menu select File>Import>Movies.
Obviously, you were not able to see the videos in iPhoto Videos in the Event Library, hence your further question.
