Unable to redownload OS X Mavericks to make bootable USB flash disk

Hi,
I'm trying to redownload Mavericks from the App Store so I can make myself a bootable USB so I can do a clean install.  The only problem is when I click on the download button for Mavericks from with Purchases, I get prompted with a message saying that "Mavericks is already installed, but if I wish to continue downloading the installer, click continue."  But when I do, I just get a spinning loader up top, and nothing starts to download...  I've tried pressing Atl or Command C (which was offered as a solution on another thread but just throws back an error ding sound at you when you do).
Does anyone have an idea of how to  get around  this or another way of downloading the installer?
I'm starting to feel like I'm banging my head against the wall here...

I ran into the same issue - downloaded and installed Mavericks yesterday, but forgot to save the download first so I could make a USB installer. When I went to re-download, I got the "Mavericks is already installed..." message, clicked Continue, the wheel at the top of the window started spinning, and then...nothing. I let the wheel spin for the better part of an hour several times without seeing any progress. Neither restarting App Store, nor Control-clicking the 'Download' button, nor attempting to download from the 'Purchases' tab succeeded in starting the download.
I decided to try temporarily spoofing my OS X version, and it worked! Here's a step-by-step:
1) If it's currently running, close App Store.
2) In a Finder window, navigate to System/Library/CoreServices (you must have Finder set to display hidden and system files as detailed here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4505509).
3) Copy 'SystemVersion.plist' to your Desktop, and then rename the copy to 'SystemVersionNEW.plist'.
4) Using TextEdit, open this copy of the file, and change the system version listed under the 'ProductUserVisibleVersion' and 'ProductVersion' fields to something lower than 10.9 (I used 10.7, but I suspect anything lower than 10.9 would work).
5) Save the file on the Desktop.
6) Copy your newly edited 'SystemVersionNEW.plist' into the System/Library/CoreServices directory.
7) At this point, run App Store. Leave it at its initial welcome screen, which today is showing the big 'OS X Mavericks' banner at the top.
8) Now go back to your Finder window(s), rename the original file to 'SystemVersionOLD.plist', and rename 'SystemVersionNEW.plist' to 'SystemVersion.plist', effectively replacing the original file with your edited version.
* Note here that in order to rename the original 'SystemVersion.plist' file, you will probably have to edit its Sharing and Permissions settings by Control-clicking on it, selecting 'Get Info', scrolling down to the bottom of the info window, clicking the lock icon, entering your password, and then changing all the entries in the 'Sharing and Permissions' window just above the lock icon from 'Read Only' to 'Read & Write'. (Once you finish the process and your download has started, you can go back and change permissions back to 'Read Only'.)
9) Go back to App Store and click on the OS X Mavericks banner (if you don't see the OS X Mavericks banner at the top of the window, just do a search for 'Mavericks' and click on 'OS X Mavericks' when it comes up in the search results). If everything has worked as it did for me, you'll now see a 'Free Download' button, instead of 'Download'. Click it, then click 'Install' and your download should begin.
10) As soon as the download appears on your Launchpad with a progress bar, you can go back to Finder, delete 'SystemVersion.plist", and rename 'SystemVersionOLD.plist' to 'SystemVersion.plist', replacing your edited version with the original.
As always, it's a good idea to be careful when editing system files, and make backups before changing anything.
Note that you must have App Store running already before renaming the original 'SystemVersion.plist' file; if you make the change in step 8 and then try to run App Store, it will throw an error and won't start.

I nee an easy way to resolve this with Apple.

why is it this problematic to resolve?! obviously there's a valid installer image for our macs, why can we not have access to it to use on our laptops?
I do not understand, nor accept the explanation given before - about it being a newer model... it doesn't make sense... how does that translate to "no download available".
also, if it was a valid point - we would have had that download with the release of 10.9.1 - which we don't.

  • OS X Mavericks installer on bootable USB boots with stop symbol

I've recently been trying to reinstall OS X Mavericks on my late 2010 Macbook Pro but I've ran into some problems.
I followed this guide to create a bootable USB to reinstall Mavericks. So first of all the copying took longer than it's meant to, which at first was a bit concering but I just continued. Then, once it had finished, I boot up from startup by holding 'alt' and selecting the drive. It boots up like it usally does, but then after around a minute it came up with a stop symbol and a spinner below. I've left it to load but nothing happens, I've rebooted and even tried to copy the files again.
It's not like this method dosen't work because I did it when Mavericks first came out and it worked without a hitch.
Any help would be appreciated very much. Thanks.

  • Can i make bootable usb of already made recovery disks?

i have hp pavillion dv4 series laptop.I have already made its recovery disks, which i need now.But my cd/dvd reader is not working,so i want to make bootable usb of these three disks. Can i do it or is there any other way for me??

    sawsank,
had it been obvious, I would not have asked the question. In a number of discussions here, people will often mention details that are not relevant to their goal, which is why I’d asked for clarification.
A Boot Camp partition can only be created in an internal disk, so Boot Camp can be ruled out in pursuit of your goal. (Once created internally, it won’t be bootable if it is subsequently made external.) Short of virtualizing Windows 7 in one of your four bootable OS X partitions, I don’t know the answer for how you can achieve it.

  • I am purchasing a hard drive with OSX v  10.5 installed on it. can I make a usb or disk copy of 10.5 Leopard from this hard drive copy

I am purchasing a hard drive with OSX v  10.5 installed on it. can I make a usb or disk copy of 10.5 Leopard from this hard drive copy
    Regards
    Jay

If the Mac in your signature is what you desire to use 10.5 with, you can't do so, it is too new.
If PowerPC application compatibility is what you desire with that Mac, look at this solution:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295#ROSETTALION
10.5 only was distributed by CD and updates to 10.5 from free online downloads.  Why do you want 10.5, and what do you desire to put it on?  Is the person sending 10.5 using 10.5 for anything?  If he is, he can't sell the drive.

  • Cant make bootable USB Drive / Ext HD

My hard drive gave out on me the other day, so i went and purchased a new one. However, my optical drive went dead a while back, so my only option to install the OS was via USB or Ext HD. I bought an ext disk drive, but i couldnt get it to run the installer when i booted up (Apple told me that installers wont work on USB ext disk drives) It DID recognize it when the computer was booted up, so i made a CDR of the Snow Leopard CD. I then looked on forums as so how to make it bootable. I cleared an ext, partitioned it, and selected GUID from options.
Now where i run into trouble is here: I went into restore and dragged the cdr to the SOURCE field and the drive to DESTINATION. nothing would happen. i researched and found out that the cdr had to be a dmg. So i converted it. Now when i did it again, i got an error. I went into "scan image for restore" to see if the dmg was the problem, and i get the error: Unable to scan "Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg."(Invalid argument).
Im assuming that i either didnt make the cdr correctly, or i converted it wrong. I still have copied of them both. Any help would be appreciated....

If your optical drive isn't working how did you make a .dmg of it?
Now, what you can do is take the DVD and your external HDD to a computer with a functioning optical drive. Use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the DVD to the external HDD:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external drive.
Source means the OS X DVD.
Be sure your external drive has been prepared correctly:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • R&R 4.5 cannot make bootable USB

Hi, i have upgraded to R&R 4.5, but i have the problem. I have switched to UEFI, so my system SSD drive is GPT now. I have reformated my USB drive for backups to GPT as well. Now i started R&R to make first backup and make my USB disc bootable. When i start first backup, it asks me if to make partition bootable. I confirmed, it started Create Rescue Media process but immediatly displayed dialog "Insufficient partition size to complete the operation. The partition must have 1000 MB of available space to complete this operation". But i have no idea, what partition. USB drive is empty, only one parition created, so what is the problem? If i confirm this error dialog, it continues with making backup, but then USB drive is not bootable. Thanks for advice.

I changed the USB drive from GPT back to MBR and R&R is able to make the disc bootable. If i set it as GPT, then there is an error. Does R&R 4.5 support external USB drive for backup as GPT?

  • Make a USB boot disk to restore OS AND files

I use Time Machine faithfully. I've installed OS 10.6 on a thumb drive for emergencies to restore files etc. when i've errantly thrown them away, and always thought I could somehow use it to restore my system in the event of a really big problem (never had to really test it out for real...until last night!)
I discovered that just having a boot disk isn't enough. I still needed to boot from the original CD, go to "Utilities", then "Restore from Backup". So much for all my planning.
Isn't there a way to include that essential feature on my USB boot disk?

All you need is a external powered USB drive and free Carbon Copy Cloner.
    http://www.bombich.com/
You can hold option and boot from the clone, make a backup or reverse clone when you want, total access to the clone from another Mac.
You don't need TimeGizmo or a USB thumb drive or cd's that scratch. Your not a newbie that deletes files by accident.
And if you are there is free software for that here:

  • How do I make bootable USB mp3 player/flash disk?

    hi
i have a big problem. less than a month ago i have backed up my computer using the latest version of Norton ghost v10.0. i then burned the data on to a DVD and i kept it safe. today i encountered a problem i could not cess the internet on my laptop, nor uninstall/install a program, nor get access to help and support. therefore i got the backup DVD inserted it into the DVD drive i opened Norton ghost clicked recovery and then clicked recover my computer. i told it where to look for the backup and then started restore but i then ran into an error message which says the below:
cannot complete the restore of recovery point d:\Toshiba ghost image001.v2i
-Error EC8F178F: Cannot complete the restore of recovery point: D:\Toshiba ghost image001.v2i.

---Error EBAB03E9: Internal Application Error: Memory Access Violation c0000005: Application tried to read memory at 034bac3c.
i have another way of restoring the data this is by making a mp3 player or flash disk boot the computer but on the flash disk there will be the operating system. is there any way to make the flash disk bootable.
i would like to know this because if it boots up from the flash disk or mp3 i can then delete the contents on the HDD and restore the data.
and also when trying to restore it says a file or program is using the file its trying to restore.
    can somebody help,
    regards

    Hello Samee
The best way to boot the unit in DOS mode is to use external floppy drive. This drive is not expensive and if your data are so important you can invest a few euros to buy it. Using start disk you will be able to boot into DOS mode and do what you want to do.
I also recommend you to contact Norton and see if they have some simply solution how to install created image.
With mp3 player you will not be able to boot up.

  • HT201272 Can I get a refund? Downloaded MOUNTAIN LION (tho preinstalled) to make bootable USB Startup drive

Making a bootable start-up USB stick, I have been charged for downloading the necessary Install file for Mountain Lion even though the App store knew it was already on my new MacBook Pro. Can I get a refund?
I have already paid for Mountain Lion when I bought the laptop, and online discussions that I read all said we don't have to pay again and can download by pressing Option key. ( I know I can use Restore or Internet Restore, but if the disk became really screwed up in the future I would like to have  a failsafe way of restarting from a USB pen drive, which means the necessary Install file needs to be downloaded in order to have a bootable USB. It does not remain on the laptop once Mountain Lion is activated.) Why does Apple not allow us to do this the easy way? I have since found reference to someone mentioning on Apple Support that he got a refund, but he does not say HOW!
There was a link in the Invoice Email for reporting a problem with the payment, but I don't want an automated Apple to think there's been an illegal use of my account and then freeze my account, and so have not persued this link.
Does anyone have any ideas about this?

I started typing it out but this is easier.

  • How to download Lion again to make bootable USB drive?

I downloaded Lion and have it installed.  Wanted to create a bootable USB drive from the .dmg file but it's gone after install.  How can I download again?  App Store shows it's installed and won't let me re-download.

This is not difficult and you will not have to download from the app store.
your computer has what is called  a recovery partition that came with it.
simply hold cmd+R while you boot up. let go a second after you hear the chime.
you will boot into the recovery partition.
Use disk utlity to format your usb drive and then exit Disk utlity and go to Reinstall Mountain Lion.
it will ask  you which disk you want to install ML onto. Choose your new USB drive.
    easy peasy

  • Can I Install Mavericks Fresh Without USB Flash Drive?

I have a dual SSD+HDD setup and want to do a fresh install of Mavericks. Do I need to produce a USB key like I've done with Lion and M.Lion? Or is there a way to install the OS from iCloud? Can I reboot holding Option key, format both drives and install Mavericks to the main drive from iCloud?

    groberts1980 wrote:

You don't need to, but that would be the best solution for multiple installations. iCloud is not an option.
The easiest way to create a bootable USB flash drive Mavericks installer is to download and use Lion Disk Maker: http://liondiskmaker.com/?p=189
It is an AppleScript that performs tasks you can do for yourself using Disk Utility, only less tedious.
Read the developer's notes before using it. Despite its name it has been recently updated to support Mavericks.

  • Make USB flash drive unreadable

I want to make my USB flash drive unreadable, but I don't know how to do it. I can only find threads about problems with unreadable drives, but I don't have a problem, I want to make it unreadable. Is there a way to do it (like OS X can't read NTFS, but I want that with HFS+ for a specific flash drive too).

Actually, Mac OS X can read NTFS.  So I'm not at all sure what you're trying to do.  Are you trying to encrypt a drive, or destroy the data on a drive, or make it so that Windows users can't read it, or make it so that Mac users can't read it, or make it read-only (like NTFS on a Mac)?  Or something else entirely?

  • Installing Mavericks As A Bootable External Harddrive Please Help!

Hi sorry to bother you, I'm having difficulty installing Mavericks as a bootable external harddrive. I've downloaded Mavericks off the App Store (which taken 4 hours) and have tried using the createinstallmedia method but I'm having no joy
I've been following a Youtube tutorial and everytime I run the below command through terminal when I get to the part where its "Making disk bootable…" I get this message - Couldn't mount dmg /volumes/install os x mavericks/install os x mavericks.app/contents/sharedsupport/installesd.dmg (error code 5)mount of outer dmg failed.
I have no idea what this means I'v tried googling it and there isn't much on the subject apart from one forum where one guy had to re download Mavericks again which I've done already and still get the same error message. If anyone knows where I am going wrong it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
