Unable To Save Quark XPress File In Mac OS 10.2.8

I have been trying to save a layout I created using Quark XPress 6.1 on an iMac with a 10.2.8 OS. When I first created the document, I was able to save it with no problem. However, after I had done some more work on it, I tried to save the changes -- but all I got was a message that said "Cannot find required volume or folder [-35]." The folder I have been trying to save it to is still there. I then tried using Save As to save it in a different location or under a new name -- but then I get an "Unknown error [-51]."
I tried to solve the problem by consulting Help, but all I was able to find is that apparently the error is occurring with the OS, not with Quark XPress.
I spent hours working on this document and will be sick if I am unable to save it. Can anyone possibly help me? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

How big is your hard drive, and how full is it?
How big are files like the one you are trying to save?

  • Quark Xpress files won't save OS 10.9.4

I am unable to save Quark Xpress documents in my iMac running OS 10.9.4.
The file is fine as I am able to use it on a different machine outside of the office.
The file is on the local desktop and can not be saved there or to the server even if the name is changed.
I thought about trying to delete the temporary "jaws" files from the private folder but don't seem to think that's the answer.
I have definitely verified and repaired permissions and that seems to have no impact.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Preflight keeps saying  "Unable to save the PDF File after post processing"

I'm at a loss how to overcome this. Spent almost a whole day, together with another person, trying to fix it with no success!
I use Adobe pro CC on a PC
I usually receive pdf files from this one client who edits and formats a book in Mac Pages. Up until a few days ago I had no problems converting the client's pdfs into pdf/x3, but the last three versions of the latest file have stumped me.
Just to test, I first just tried to convert the file (33MB), unchanged, to pdf/x3 using the save as other option - message reads  "the document has been saved, however, it could not be converted according to the selected standard profile: convert to PDF/X. Please use preflight with the profile "Convert to PDF/X" in order to identify those properties of the document which prevent it from being compliant to this profile"
if I then choose under Profiles - convert to PDF/X3 - it says no problems found, and appears to have saved the file. If I try to save again as a pdf/x3, just to make sure, it then tells me it's not pdf/x3 compliant
OK - so then I go back to preflight - and choose the standards function - then pdf/x3, then continue with the default colour profile. About halfway through the conversion, at the point of saving the file,  I get the message "unable to save the pdf file after post processing"
So far I've had no luck figuring out what this is.
I then choose the option of "verify compliance of ppdf/x3" - message reads "pdf/x3 version key (GTS_PDFXVersion) missing", and "Trapped key not true or false"
Help!! How can I be sure the file converted / or not?
    kim

Yes I was/am aware of Preflight's inability to play nicely over cloud technologies in certain cases, especially wrt Standards technologies, this will be partially addressed in an upcoming version of Preflight without saying too much.  But the same thing could theoretically have happened if the file was also located on another local network client or server.  Leaving aside the argument that this may violate the Acrobat User Agreement - since purchasing the software, the user agrees to employ its functionality on a single host system and precludes host-client-based scenarios - this simply is not a supported use, meaning the user may not have expectations that it will work at all, if the applications requirements are not observed.  There do exist server-solutions for Preflight files within networks, but Acrobat and by extension Acrobat Preflight is not one of those solutions, and (still) belongs in the single host-based desktop environment.
However most (99.9%) functions within Acrobat <-> acrobat.com file exchange are supported, file syncing across multiple devices will soon be supported, but Standards compliance is still admittedly a problem at this point.  Some testing has been done using 3rd party cloud technologies starting with enterprise-based solutions, such as Office 365, and this will continue to ramp up to include other 3rd party products.
As for the second point, Preflight will usually change the PDF version to be complaint, are you saying that it was unable to do so in this case?  It seems that this error should have popped up during the normal Preflight conversion attempt.  Personally I think solving a workflow problem using the print path is a little bit of a heavy-handed approach, but if helped and the results are acceptable, then that is good.  Since that path is non-existent on a Mac, as one needs to Save as Adobe PDF from the Print dialog's PDF drop-down menu, I am assuming your workflow involved file creation on a Mac, then further processing on Windows using the PDF printer.  I am wondering if a simple resave/Save As... to PDF with overwrite on a Mac, or Preflighting the file using a PDF version compatibility profile before the PDF/X conversion would have helped.  Since there are such a multitude of methods that a PDF can be created, there are also many ways within Acrobat that a user can shape the file to be compatible with the expected workflow, ie, 'many ways to skin a cat', without being morbid.

It sounds like if you open Preferences in Word there will be a place where you can specify where to store autorecover files. Right now it sounds like it's pointing to somewhere that doesn't exist.

  • Unable to save or download files, already tried suggested options

I'm not the most tech-savvy creature on the planet, so bear with me.
For a while now, I've been unable to save or download files using Firefox. IE isn't working either, but I only initially used IE on this computer to download Firefox anyway. I've tried the [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable%20to%20download%20or%20save%20files suggested options].
I'm not incapable of downloading though - Steam and the Blizzard launcher are still working as always. AVG's updating download, hoever, doesn't appear to work. On occasion, I have been able to download things - VLC Media Player and seldomly an item I attempt to download will successfully be saved. It's so infrequent and unpredictable though, that I can't reliably find out what's allowing me to do so. Needless to say, since my virus and spyware scanners appear to be borked, I'm more than a touch worried and unable to download any suggested alternatives.
When downloading a file, it will briefly appear in the location I saved it to before vanishing. I ask now because my computer's performance has seriously dropped within the last month or so, and I'm not convinced I'll be able to sort it out while I'm so thoroughly grounded without downloads.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Opening old Quark Xpress files on a newer Mac

The non profit I used to work for has lost it's PDFS of our old newsletter, which they want to re-post on their website. It seems our only option is to make new ones, but the files used in their creation all date between 1997-2003--most of them are Quark 4 for OS 9 (plus the associated images created in versions of photoshop or illustrator that date to that period) because at the time I was not using an OS X enabled Mac. 1) is this the right place to ask this question; might i be better off inquiring on another forum, 2) Aside from potential problems opening files created in an OS 9 environment, might their be additional complications were we to try and do this on an intel machine? (I know little about how various SW applications handle backwards compatibility) 3) any suggestions on how best to go about this? I recall whenever I ran Quark in classic mode on my Ibook there were always font issues. 4) any pitfalls I might not be anticipating? 5) Might the best option be to find on old G4 running OS 9 in native mode loaded with Quark and the fonts we need (I have one, but it's not working. Not sure what's wrong)

I'm a bit out of practice; I did this stuff years ago. So you're saying you could use the old font files for Mac OS 8-9 with Mac OS X?

  • Unable to save a tiff file (save over)

I have rendered some images with a 3d program and saved as tiffs.
I will open the images in Photoshop and select SAVE. A message states "unable to save, the file is already open or in use". As a result, I will have to save a copy and rename it. What is weird is that I am unable to throw away the original TIFF. When I empty the trash a dialog will say "items are in use and can not be thrown away." Any ideas?

  • Unable to save a pages file

Creating a 10 page newsletter in Pages 09. Unable to save the file even though it has previously been saved on the same computer. Unable save, save as, or email the file. Any suggestions?

    Hello
It would be fine to get the exact message which you get.
An odd behavior was described several times : the system refuse to save the doc even when the user try to export it.
If like me you have two versions installed : one running in French and one running in English, you may try to copy from one version to the other one. It's the unique way giving a chance to keep everything.
The problem with this behavior is that, as we can't save, there is no way to study the file's content to check if there is something corrupted in it.
    It's a really annoying f
"feature" because it will be very difficult to understand what fails and so build a way to get rid of it.
At this time, the best workaround is to use an autosave tool creating incremental backups.

  • Unable to Save Project (*.cp file)

    Hello Captivate Forum,
Here I go again!!! I have many problems with captivate 3.0,
in terms of file size and importing.
    Is it me or memorex???
Scenario - have cp file (147 mb). I cannot edit or change
this file. Can do Save As - the file size does not change.
    New problem found.
I create an empty project. It has one slide. I log-off a
network, log on to computer locally, open my 1 slide project, and
import some OBJECTS on one slide only from the 147 mb file. This
actually worked (it DOES NOT WORK when I am logged into my
domain???!!). I then tried to save my now 2 slide project.
I get a captivate dialog that says I either do not have
priveleges to save the file in the current location or the file is
locked by another user. I get the same dialog when attempting to
save the file when logged in to the domain, except the import will
not work when loggted on the domain (?)
Has anyone seen this??? I plan to call Adobe tomorrow in
    regard to this issue.
The user has full privs on all the dir paths and files, etc.
    thanks,
    eholz1

I've tried clearing the cache, didn't help. I've identified a pc that doesn't have the problem, looked at the java console, everything was the same.

  • Import and Save Quark Express Files - Acrobat Pro XI

A friend of mine has some newsletters that she produced in Quark Express in the late 1990's and wishes to share them with me. She no longer has Quark Express and neither do I. I'm wondering if it is still possible to import these files into Acrobat Pro XI on a Mac and then save them off as PDF files? Or, do I need to save them as .ps files in Acrobat Pro XI, then run them through Acrobat Distiller? I have looked in the Adobe forums but cannot find anything applicable to Acrobat Pro XI. If someone can let me know what is the best way to go, then that would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks for any assistance.

Acrobat Pro cannot open QuarkXpress files so you are SOL.
If these are really older QXP files like version 3 or 4, you can try to open them in InDesign.
But InDesign will not open any Quark files newer than version 4, also not sure if InDesign CC will do this at all.
There is a Markzware plugin called Q2ID which may work for you.
If neither of you have QuarkXpress, these are your only options.

  • HP LaserJet M1132 MFP: unable to save scan to file

    Hi,
I just purchased a new HP LaserJet M1132 MFP. Everything is working fine except when using HP Director. It detects the device and scans. But when I try to save the file on my computer it doesn't succeed. Nothing is saved in the folder. What seems to be the problem?

    Hi,
Did you installed the printer using teh original CD?
If so, can you see Mac OS X v10.7 listed as supported on its label?
I assume the CD will not be compatible with 10.7...
If this is the case indeed, go to Applications > HP Laserjet MFP folder (or anything similar) and follow the HP Uninstaller..
After uninstalling the software be sure to remove the printer from Print & Scan if it still exists...
Download and install the latest software for Lion below and check if that may resolve the problem:
