Unable to share files with Windows

I have followed the instructions on my iMac to a "T", but am unable to share files with the wireless laptop on my network. The ethernet-wired pc can see the iMac fine and does not have to use a password to view the shared files. I must be doing something wrong with passwords - can someone please help? Thanks!

G'day v3ofushere,
You may need to provide a little more information so that we can assist you!
What version of Windows are you running on the other machines?  XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1?  EDIT: Scratch that - I just saw that it is a Windows 7 PC from the subject!!! (DOH!).
Are your Windows computers on a domain, or are they running as a WORKGROUP?
When you say that you can't connect to the network, does this mean that you are having trouble connecting to file shares?
What are you seeing when you attempt to connect?  Any error messages?  Or is it simply failing to accept the login credentials and shaking the dialog box at you?
Cheers,
Rodney

If you mean just moving files between a Mac and a PC with XP on it, get a USB flash drive, format it FAT32 (they usually come that way) and copy the files to that drive.

  • Unable to share files with other Macs after lion Upgrade

I am unable to share files other macs on my home network.
I receive an error message that the server will not allow additional users to log on.
I can connect to windows machines and can use mac screen sharing.

I have multiple machines with Lion installed (Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Mac Mini & a late 2010 iMac) and several more runing Snow Leopard. I cannot make AFP connections to any Lion machine from any other machine, Lion or not. At the same time I can make Screen Sharing connections and several other types of connection to the Lion machines, and can make any type of connection (including AFP) from the Lion machines to the Snow Leopard machines.
After I enter my password, attempted AFP connections to Lion invariably draw the "This file server will not allow any additional users to log on" alert.
Yet the target Lion machine shows "Number of users connected 0". I don't know how to find the crash log, but no AFPFileServer process appears in the Activity Monitor's All Processes list on the 2 Lion machines I checked, so this might be the problem. I've tried repairing the file system & permissions, to no avail.
=> Spettinger's workaround - switching AFP off and SMB on - does indeed allow me to make file sharing connections to my Lion machines. Thanks spettinger!
But, how can this be? There is nothing unusual about my configuration: its all recent Apple hardware & system software, with no 3rd-party protocols & no hacking. Why doesn't everyone who shares files have this exact problem?

  • How can ipad share files with windows pc?

Can the iPad be connected to a Windows 7 PC and used to share files between Word and Pages?

Word files can be opened and edited in Pages on the iPad and you can send the files to the iPad via email, by using a service like DropBox or by using iOS file sharing. This will explain how to use file sharing.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4094
You might want to be aware of the fact that some editing features will be lost from the Word files when you open them Pages - fonts will be limited - some formatting issues may arise - Pages on the iPad just doesn't work like Word on a computer.

  • Unable to share files in windows 7 to my apple tv

is there settings that i need to change in windows 7 so i can share pictures and stuff with my apple tv? sharing works with my wife's macbook notebook, but not with my pc. i have 2 notebook pcs running windows 7. i have turned on home sharing and i am running itunes version 10.0.68.
i have turned off and rebooted the computer and apple tv in various orders and still does not solve the problem.

I had this same issue for a very long time. I tried everything including cycling power on the cable modem, wireless router, Apple TV2, Windows 7 machine and nothing would work. I poked holes in the firewall for both UDP and TCP at the required ports. The only thing that worked for me was to change the wireless router to use B/G Mixed and not to use B/G/N. I don't know if this was just my issue, or something else, but it worked for me.

  • Can't share files with Macbbok Air and Windows XP PC

Despite several calls to apple support I am still unable to share files with the PC.The PC is wired to the router and the macbook is wireless.
I can see the shared files on my PC in the finder of the MAC but whan I click on the file it says that 'original item "shared file" cannot be found'.
or when connecting via go-connect to server-, the error message
' the volume "Shared file" cannot be mounted' appears, this is followed by a message 'sorry the operation could not be completewd because an unexpected error occurred (Eror code -6602)
I can also only connect as a guest via Finder and sometimes when trying to connect the error maessages do not appear but the computer seems to absorb a lot of CPU usage, get hot and freeze.
    Any ideas please?
I have tried turning off firewalls on both computers and have spoken to support for the d link router who confirmed that the router doesnt block file sharing.

Actually, I just typed in smb://PCNAME without any folders, logged in as a guest (I don't have a password-enabled share setting in Windows 7), and my Mac kindly asked me which volume to mount. I chose Users, and it popped up in Finder. Fully browsable.

How do I share files from Windows Vista to a Mac with Lion OSX?  I'm having SO much trouble with this!  Any help would be appreciated!!!

In a finder window, under 'shared' you should be able to see the windows computer name, click on it and connect to it. I am assuming here you have sharing turned on and permissions granted on the windows computer.
Will add a note though, I have frequently accessed files from a PC on the LAN using XP, not vista.

  • Using FTP to share files with 3 Windows computers - Not Working Anymore

My office is trying to share files with a number of computers, both Mac and PC. The files are housed on a Mac OS 10 version 10.6, and I've enabled both AFP and FTP sharing. The macs in the office connect just fine, but yesterday, after three weeks of working perfectly, the Windows machines stopped connecting to the Mac. They get a "The Connection with the server was reset" error. We don't use an FTP client - I just had the PCs connect to the Mac by typing ftp://address in their explorer window.
I've tried restarting all computers, disabling and re-enabling FTP sharing, and I've triple checked permissions, etc. Is there anything else I should be investigating? I'm trying to look into our firewall here, but since our computers are rentals and another company controls our internet access I'm not sure what I can do there. (I tried setting up workgroups, but said company won't give me administrative access over the PCs or access to the firewall, and there's no IT dept to speak of)
As I'm sure you can tell, I'm just a regular old office monkey who inherited the "IT" job with no IT experience, so I apologize if any part of this question is stupid.

I know just about nothing about this, but common dianostic practices include looking at the logs.
Either use Applications -> Utilities -> Console, which has a search function that might make this easier.
Or go looking around /var/log (which you can use Unix 'grep' to do your searching ). Then again, NOT ALL logs are in /var/log, and Console knows where more logs are located.
2 logs that might be a good starting point would be /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure

  • Still not sure how to share files with my friend's Windows PC?

I went through all the help pages concerning this, but it doesn't seem to help any. On our house internet connection, both our computers use the same IP address. I tried connecting directly to his computer using ethernet cable, but his computer never showed up. Our workgroup name should be the same, his is WORKGROUP but I'm not sure how to officially make mine that. I went to Network in System Preferences and clicked on Advanced... then went to the WINS tab and it has workgroup in the workgroup box, does this mean my computer is using that workgroup name? I'm at a loss and would like to share files with my friend's computer.

    Do you have a router?
If not then sharing files will not be easy.

The add the Mac to the WORKGROUP
Applications > Utilities > Directory Access
    Select SMB/CIFS
    Click Configure
Change Workgroup to match the Windows Workgroup.

Since I use Mac os x mountain lion it is no more possible to share files with my pc windows 7. Does somebody know how to solve this problem? I have been answered by an Apple technician that with the new Mountain Lion the problem was with Windows. I am not convinced.

I have renamed my pc and everything is ok with the file sharing SMB. Both my iMac and my pc can share files very easily.
