Unable to update or restore any frimware but 1.1.4

the only firmware i can use is 1.1.4. i purchased 2.0 and kept getting an error saying it could not be restored or update same with 2.0.1. i tried upating with the files right on my desktop that didnt work...i do not know what to do.

This problem is affecting quite a large number of people on these forums, and there are quite a few topics on how to fix it which have worked for some and not for others, I tried them all and none worked so I took it back to my local Apple agent who confirmed (for my) iTouch that it was a hardware problem and no amount of updates would fix it, it has been sent back to Apple, this could be also the case for other people with this problem making it a waste of time trying to fix it with a software upgrade.

Check out this Apple article -> iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com)  on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings.  If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network.  If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.
From the failed connection attempts in your iTunes diagnostics and the connection related tips in the article, it sounds like you should look at the security software on your computer and the hosts file.

Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or photos.apple.com is not blocked by a firewall, or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps underAdvanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations.
Restore your device while connected to a different network.

  • What to do when unable to update or restore ipod?

i have been having some issues with my ipod for a few weeks now...it will be playing fine and then will just "freeze up" (it stops playing music and gets stuck on whatever screen it is on). when this happens, i have been resetting it (holding down the middle button and top button at the same time until it reboots). however, today i plugged it into my computer for the first time in a while and tried to update to the latest ipod version (1.3 i think?) and was unable to do so (i received an error message). i then tried to restore it and was unable to do so (i received an error message that said something along the lines of some files being in use by another program). has anyone else had this sort of issue and been able to resolve the issue? any suggestions? thanks!!

I have a very similar problem - HELP! My 5th gen 80gb iPod Video, started playing up a couple of weeks ago, randomly freezing on me causing me to having to keep resetting it (which now seems to take ages). After one particular reset (holding the select and menu button) all my music folders were showing as totally empty/blank, though this seemed to be rectified after another couple of resets.
After another day or so, it happened again and wouldn't clear so I synced it with my PC which seemed to clear it for a couple more days until it all started again. It is also really starting to sound "clunky" whenever i try to turn it on.
In the last couple of days though iTunes won't even recognise it as connected (even though it comes up in my computer as an external disk drive). I just about managed it once and tried to restore my iPod, but even that seemed to fail and now I'm stuck with it, blank, not recognised by iTunes and therefore effectivley useless
Any ideas short of throwing it away?!

  • Unable to update or restore

    I have an iPhone 3GS 32GB, firmware 3.1.3, with iTunes ver. 9.1.1 (12).
My iTunes bugs out whenever I press the update button on the iPhone menu, and tells me that iTunes 9.1.1 is the newest version. So I can't update my iPhone. Okay. So I try to restore my iPhone instead, and I get one of two errors; the first one being something about being unable to contact Apple's update server, and the other says that my device is not eligible for an update.
Now, I don't really care much for the update in and of itself, but I can't restore my phone? That's really bad. Please help.
EDIT: I'm going to try to first manually update to iTunes 9.2, and see if that makes a difference.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your reply.
I did all the steps that you suggested, but the ipod mini doesn't even respond to my pc after the pci-usb enhanced is disable. I waited over an hour and looks like there is no transfer to the ipod at all.
What do you think. I'm using the nano's cable on the mini, should I get the mini's cable? does it make a different?

  • HT201210 Ipod touch Unable to update or restore

update has killed my ipod touch, black screen with the apple logo, flicks to white, seems to restart then back to the apple screen until the battery runs out.  I've followed  every step in article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 many many of times and only one near success which got me as far as itunes actually seeing an ipod and being able to restore it! But no alas it failed I've tried everything I can think of. Anyone out there have any ideas?

    - Try DFU mode and then restore:
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - Let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Unable to Update or Restore 5th Gen Ipod

I just bought a new ipod and have been unable to transfer music from my g5 to the ipod.
From itunes, under my ipod, it shows the playlists and all of the songs in the playlists are greyed out. It shows the capacity that the songs are on my ipod, but I can not see/play them on the ipod.
I followed the 5 R's, and am unable to do Restore.
From the itunes summary screen, the Update and Restore buttons are both greyed out, and it says only Macintosh-formatted ipods can be updated.
From the Ipod > Settings > About > Format - The format shows as Windows, and I am unable to switch to mac.
I have the latest versions of Tiger and itunes.
    Thanks

try opening Disk Utility (with your iPod plugged in) and repair disk permissions on both the iPod and your main hard drive.
