Unable to use brand new Ipod Nano 3rd gen

I have just purchased an ipod nano 3rd generation. I had previously updated iTunes to the latest version available on my MacBook Pro (10.4.10)
Whenever I plug it in I get: "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again"
I've done what it says to do, and I have rebooted etc.. it just won't work.

Hi thesquib,
Have you tried connecting your iPod to your computer in Disk Mode? Sometimes if an iPod is in disk mode it will be recognized better by the computer.

  • My PC Shuts Down When I Plug In My New IPod Nano 3rd Gen.

The title of this post pretty much says it all. Got me my new iPod Nano 3rd gen. yesterday. Brought it home, booted up the puter, loaded iTunes and plugged that sucker in. Well first iTunes kindly instructed me that I would have to download it's newest software, which I did.
Then soon afterwards when I thought i was set, I plugged in my new 3rd gen iPod Nano to the pc and as soon as I did that my pc shut down completely, and restarted. Shut down is putting it mildly, I mean it just went 'kablink" and then was restarting.
I tried uninstalling iTunes, cleaning my temp folder, my internet cache, then reinstalling iTunes anew, still nada. All to no avail, people, because each and everytime I plug in my new iPod Nano, no sooner than i do this my pc summarily goes "kablink" on me and starts booting up again.
NOW I STILL have my iPod Nano 2nd gen, and it works fine, even with the newest iTunes software, it doesn't screw up my pc like the new 3rd gen iPod Nano does.
Now I am to conclude that the problem lies in the 3rd gen iPod itself. How could it not? My iPod Nano 2nd gen works absolutely fine, and everytime I plug in my new iPod Nano, I shut down in a flash withtout fail. Anyone of you have this error? I would love to know short of calling iTunes tech support about what to do about this, this is a MAJOR bummer for sure. Now I have to be concerened about whether or not I am ever going to get this thing to work now.
Is the iPod broken? If not why the shutdowns then? Please advise. Many thanks in advance.

Hey, I bought an iPod nano 3rd gen yesterday and I have exactly the same prolem you are describing in your message. Have you found any solution to this?

  • Will my computer read my new ipod nano 3rd gen?

i just bought a new ipod nano 3rd gen from circuit city before i opened it i looked on the back and saw system requirments it says nothing about being compatible with windows xp media center edition and i have windows XP media center edition 2002 sp2. will the ipod nano 3rd gen work with my computer?

Yes it will work fine. iTunes just needs XP and doesn't really care what sort of crazy version that came with whatever computer you bought. It is still just XP maybe configured or a little more specifically.

  • New Ipod Nano 3rd Gen. Won't Sync Properly

I iPod Nano 3rd generation and, every time I plug it in and click "Sync", about midway through completion, I will recieve this message:
"Attempting to copy “DANIEL’S IP” failed. An unknown error occurred (-69)."
I don't even know what Daniel's IP is, let alone understand why it does this. I recently tried syncing my music to an iPod Nano 2nd Gen. 4GB and it got through the letter "J" (Artist name) and gave me this message. I bought this new 3rd Gen. Nano and it, too, only goes through letter "J" and gives me this message. PLEASE HELP!

No, I was hoping no one would say that. It is not a bad file because, on my nano 2nd gen 8 GB, every song was transferred. Plus, it stops at a different song each time and I have watched the top and still couldn't find where it stops. My question is still unanswered.

  • Video not working on new ipod nano (3rd gen)

Just bought a new generation ipod nano. When registering, I got a free movie short and a TV show episode. It did not seem to fully download on to Itunes. I have updated itunes to 7.5. I get an error message that says that I can't play video on my new ipod nano, which it clearly has the capability to do. Any suggestions? Not sure how to re-download freebie video and TV shows.

Does the video play in iTunes
if so right click and select "convert to ipod/iphone format"
if not click "store" in the bar and click "check for purchaces"

  • Totally unresponsive and unrecognized by iTunes brand new iPod Touch 3rd gen

Within less than 24 hrs of setting up brand new 3rd gen iPod touch it is totally unresponsive. While using it, the screen went black, felt a little warmer than normal, and now won't do anything. I've tried resetting by pressing on/off and home buttons. Tried this even after plugging in to computer for 20+ min and still nothing. iTunes no longer recognizes it, so I cannot restore it. I am just stuck with a black screen with absolutely no response. I'm at a loss on what to do next or what might be wrong.  Have been all over this site for a solution, but just can't seem to find one that helps me.  Apple Stores are 3 hrs away from where I live. Very careful with the device, not dropped, not wet, just simply using it.  Any help greatly appreciated... my son is devistated.

See if placing the iPod in Recovery Mode will allow iTunes to see the iPod so you can restore via iTunes.
Next would be an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Can't see brand new iPod Nano in Windows!!!

I just bought a brand new iPod Nano (2nd Gen) for my daughter for Christmas, and right out of the box it would not be recognized by Windows XP or iTunes -- even though another iPod Nano (1st Gen) that we own did connect. It was charging though.
I used this forum looking for answers and although helpful, there was an awful lot of misleading advice. I finally called the help line 1-800-275-2273 on this website http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
What I was told was to simply go through the reset process (which I had ignored because it seemed too simple). The steps are to flip the hold button a couple of times and then hold the menu and select (center) button down at the same time for 10 seconds. The iPod will power back up and be reset.
What this tells me is that Apple has a problem with the software originally loaded on these iPods, but at least this simple procedure solved the problem. I thought I would come back here and provide you with the solution to this problem -- hopefully saving you a lot of time! Good luck!!

I agree with you, Apple to me has some type of problem with their iPods. I've used some type of computer device since 1971, and in all this time, I have never used a device such as the iPod with so many quirks.
I tell you one thing the iPod makes you think!!! O;-D
I'm afraid to buy Apple Care because during the 1st year of owning an iPod you get support that really is not much help. Within the 1st year of owning an iPod, a customer can purchase the Apple Care Plan. The Apple Care Plan is only 2 years, and then you are on your own. If Apple had confidence in their iPod's, they would offer a longer warranty period.
The only thing I see Apple Care is good for is that if something catastrophic happen, they will pay for shipping and any parts that are needed to fix it.
Their stock is doing great. Where is the money going???

  • How long will a 5 year old iPod Nano 3rd gen's battery last?

    Hello,
I am thinking about buying a used mint green iPod Nano 3rd gen off of ebay. I was wondering how long the battery would last?
    Thanks,
    themiz

i found this from another user and it worked for me!
I had the exact same problem about 10 minutes ago. I was freaking out because I'm going on vacation soon and I was getting all worked up because none of my three power sources were charging it and it wasn't even turning on at all. Mine is also refurbished.
I called Support and the automated phone person gave me these steps:
    1. Plug the iPod into the computer
    2. Set it down on a flat surface
    3. Take index fingers and hold menu and center button for about 5 seconds (it actually took me 20 seconds)
It then connected to the computer and turned on. I don't know why trying to reset it normally didn't work but try this and I hope it helps!!

  • I am unable to get my decently new Imac to recognize or charge my brand new ipod nano.

I am unable to get my decently new Imac to recognize or charge my brand new ipod nano.  I have tried to restart my computer and the ipod, neither have worked. Running itunes 10.7.  Please help.

Can you see your device being connected to your iMac in the System Profiler?
Although this is not an iPod touch, try these suggestions as well:

  • I need help restoreing my ipod nano 3rd gen so its like new

I need help restoreing my ipod nano 3rd gen so its like new

Plug it to your computer using iPod USB Cable (any cable should work excluding iPhone 5 and Shuffle cables)...... when you see your iPod in iTunes go to that iPod and click restore...... the whole process should take (depending on what you have on your iPod and its is up to date) it should take no longer than 30 minutes...... then it will ask if you want to set up as new iPod or restore from back-up (itunes back up), since you said:
    so its like new
click set as new iPod and follow through what they said.

just bought a brand new ipod nano and downloaded an audiobook borrowed from the local library.  The book is there and playing but, I cannot hear anything.  What am I doing wrong?

Does the same file play normally in iTunes?  Do other audiobooks play normally on the iPod?
How does "borrowing" work?  Does it require use of another app, other than iTunes, to get it on the iPod?

  • I have a brand new Ipod nano never been opened. Could I exchange and get money off for ipad at an apple store?

I have a brand new Ipod nano that has never been opened. It was a gift.  Could I exchange it and get money off for an ipad at an apple store?

No.  The most you can do is turn it in your a 10% discount towards the purchase of a new one.  You would be much better off selling the Nano on Craigslist or eBay and using the profits from that towards the purchase of an iPad.

  • Why won't my BRAND NEW iPod Nano 7th Generation recognize headphones?

My BRAND NEW iPod Nano 7th Generation (purchased from and Apple Store less than a week ago) will not recognize any headphones.  Consequently, I can hear NO sounds.  It worked just fine right after I set it up. I turned it off, disconnected headphones that came with the Nano. Several hours later I turned it on again, plugged in the headphones, and then I could hear NOTHING. When I tried the radio, I got the message there was no signal because it said the headphones were not plugged in, which they were.  I have tried two other sets of headphones.  None work, but they all work in another iPod, so I know it is not the headphones. I restored the software and started over, but this didn't help either.  I have pushed the headphone jack in as far as possible. This is very frustating because this Nano was a birthday gift for my husband.   I will be grateful for any help.  Thanks a lot.

Thanks SO much for the GREAT advice!  I did just what you said, and I am back in business.  The sound is fine, and the radio works. I cleaned out the jack with a tooth pick, blew some air in, and pushed the jack in a bit harder.I guess I was too tentative about pushing the jack all the way in. You were right that it is a tight fit.  Thanks again, deggie.  My husband thanks you also! His birthday gift now works!  Yay!
