Unable to use Classic,  encrypted files unusable,

Hi,
First post, been using Macs for years but I don’t really know too much, hopefully enough to follow directions.
In 2001 I created several WP files on Appleworks (? version/? computer model/probably OS 9.2.x) I encrypted them using Apple File Security. Recently I recovered these files from the hard drive which is all I have left of that computer. I am currently using an iMac G5 (OS 10.4.3) and I downloaded OS 9.2.2 from the Apple download. I can only find an alias to Apple File Security, the actual file is nowhere. I found mention of it being in the Security folder, but I cannot find that either. I searched the entire system and it apparently does not reside in the folder I have of 9.2.2 However I could only find System 9 “updates”, and I don’t understand what you need to do to build up to this capability, ie; fully functional Classic (which seems to open otherwise normally) with Tiger as the computer’s primary OS.
Did I correctly place OS 9.2.2 into my computer. I know there is additional System 9 folders on the installation disc (I discovered this later), however when I tried to install those, I got a message that I could not continue because there was nothing left to install which I interpreted to mean I already had successfully installed Classic. The downloaded installation seemed flawless. Nonetheless I tried to delete it and try again only to get a message that states “The operation cannot be completed because item “System 9.2.2” is required by the System. This “item” is located in Applications folder as a file named System 9.2.2
I am able to open these files, of course they are unintelligible gibberish. One of them had somehow become Unix-executable, and the rest although originally Appleworks WP documents are now opening as TextEdit only.
I used BBEdit 8.2.4 and was able to open the files, unfortunately they are still incomprehensible.
Assuming I have done anything right so far, is there any way to get this Apple File Security process so I can fully recover the files. I will live without them, I just want them And why cannot I get rid of this version of OS 9.2.2, and replace it with the Classic on the install disc, I didn’t need it before. Thanx in advanx.
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hey eww,
Thanx for such a quick reply. I sucessfully removed System Folder and took care of the first problem. Second; On the Install Disc that came with this computer is the following:
X Install Disc 2
Installing Mac OS 9 for Classic Support
Your computer does not come with Mac OS 9 installed. If you want to use Mac OS 9 applications with your computer, you have to install Mac OS 9 using this disc.
Important: Do not use this disc to install Mac OS 9 on any computer except the computer it came with. Also, while you can use Mac OS 9 applications with this computer, you cannot start up in Mac OS 9.
Apple recommends that you back up the data on your hard disk before installing this software. Apple is not responsible for any lost data.
If you want to install Mac OS X and the other applications that came with your computer, use the Mac OS X Install Disc 1.
Installing Mac OS 9
Follow these steps to install Mac OS 9:
1. Back up your essential files, if possible.
2. Insert the "Mac OS X Install Disc 2.”
3. Double-click "Install Mac OS 9 System Support."
4. Follow the onscreen instructions.
5. After selecting the destination disk for installation, continue following the onscreen instructions.
Well, I followed the onscreen instructions and then got the following message: "You cannot continue. There is nothing to install" and a picture of a hard drive with an arrow pointing down.
So if this represents a significant hassle forget it, I am perfectly able to forget the files but I thought that if Apple gave me Classic support it should work without a hassle. Since I otherwise have no reason to need it at present I don't care that much. What do you think, should I bother with figuring this out or not?

  • Unable to use Boldt .pst files

    Hi
    I recently heard about the Boldt software instrument sounds which I downloaded free at iComposition.
    I placed them here: HD > Library > Application Support > GarageBand > Instrument Library > Plug-in settings (because that was where I found other .pst files placed).
    When I open a new project and create a Software Instrument Track, I don't have access to the Boldt sounds in the Track Info preset window (as I have with eg Guitar / Steel String Acoustic).
    Instead, I hit 'Generator', choose 'Guitar', hit 'Manual' and there it says eg Boldt 12-string Ovation. But when I select this, all I can get out of it is a kind of muffled sound, a bit like a electric piano ... and this is what all the Boldt sounds are like.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    First of all, please note Network Stored PST files are not recommended by Microsoft back in the very early age, please read the details in this blog below:
    Network Stored PST files ... don't do it!
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2007/01/21/network-stored-pst-files-don-t-do-it.aspx
    As for your local .pst files, here are some suggestions:
    1. Run Scanpst.exe to repair the possible damage in the .pst file, if you are using Office 2010 and Windows 7 as you mentioned, this application can be found in the following path:
    <disk drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 (32-bit version of Windows)
    or <disk drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft Office(x86)\Office14 (64-bit version of Windows)
    For reference, we can read this Microsoft KB:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272227/en-us
    2. Move the .pst file to a new location on local, check if then the .pst file can be accessed or opened. Please make sure the user has the proper permission of the folder in which the .pst file is stored. Please also make sure Outlook is run as
    administrator.
    If you get any error messages and other details that may be helpful, please kindly let me know.

  • EFS(Encrypting File System ) Folder can work for cloning Windows 7 PC?

    Dear All,
      I am using EFS  (Encrypting File System) on a Windows 7 notebook to encrypt a folder.
      I would like to clone this notebook to several other notebooks.
      Will the EFS still work on the cloned PC?

    Hi,
    As I know, after cloning the system, the SID may be changed. So, the EFS folder unable to open.
    But if you have the EFS certificate, you can still use the folder with no issue.
    In theory, the EFS can work on the cloned PC, please backup the certificate first.
    Back up Encrypting File System (EFS) certificate:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/back-up-efs-certificate#1TC=windows-7
    Hope it helps.

  • Windows 7 problem with EFS (Encrypting file system)

    Hello colleagues!
    I think this topic is related more to the security.
    The problem is a bit unusual and google doesn't give me a clear answers, but maybe anyone came across
    with similar problem...
    In general, I suspect that my problem is EFS (Encrypting file system), ie
    service that automatically encrypts files using a digital signature (certificate).
    A little background:
    - On the work PC it was necessary to reinstall
    the system, according to corporate rules all the content we have is encrypted using EFS (Encrypted files are highlighted with green color as you know).
    I have copied all the data on a portable drive and also copied the certificates (certmgr.msc).
    The system was reinstalled. The only change - it was x32 and became x64.
    - It was necessary to free up some space on the hard drive (the file
    system on it is NTFS), so,  I temporary copied all the files on my home PC. My work certificate was installed on it too, because
    I work from home
    sometimes.
    When the  work PC was repaired, I've moved all the files back in
    the same way (ie on the portable HDD, then to the work PC).
    All files were working, but when I needed MS Word documents, it became clear that something was wrong.
    When I've opened the document, it gaveme a window with weird symbols and prompts me to select the encoding ... of course -
    no encoding was fit.
    Started to explore all the documents, it appears that some part of them were working,
    someof them not - all the old documents were working, ie the ones, which
    were created before deploying EFS (newly created or copied files immediately encrypted).
    So, now I am sure that the
    documents were somehow re-encrypted, at least on a portable hard drive, they do not look as encrypted (not highlighted in green), but it's still not open.
    Completely stopped opening all the documents that have
    been encrypted (for all types of files, ie it is not just an MS Word, but also pdf, presentations, charts, and even the pictures).
    Tell me, who faced similar?
    How can it all back? I have no possibility to restore those documents from another sources.

    Try copy those corrupted files and make sure you are using the same certificate and then re-encrypt the copied files and try decrypt them.
    If possible, use the same account as you used for encryption.

  • SCCM 2012: USMT Encrypted Files unavailable options

    This is perhaps a difficult question,
    As you know Configuration manager has a checkbox for choice in its GUI called “Skip files that use the Encrypting File System (EFS). This forces only one of 2 options:
    Checked              /efs:skip
    Unchecked         /efs:copyraw
    Question is. Is there anyway to get scanstate to use either /efs:abort or /efs:decryptcopy?
    When I use osdmigrateadditionalcaptureoptions, the setting gets overwritten.
    Kindest regards.
    /Andrew
    Blog: http://scriptimus.wordpress.com

    The TS is running under System context. I donot think the other two options could work.
    Maybe you could utilize Run Command Line task to run the scanstate command and append the options.
    You need to specify an account that has permission on the encrypted files.

  • After the last Yosemite update on my MacBook pro I turned the FileVault on, now my Mac is freezing all the time and encrypting the drive looks like going to last forever and I am unable to use my MacBook pro what must I do???!!!

    after the last Yosemite update on my MacBook pro I turned the FileVault on, now my Mac is freezing all the time and encrypting the drive looks like going to last forever and I am unable to use my MacBook pro what must I do???!!!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    how can i stop an error message that comes up when i am using word? the error message is "word is unable to save the Autorecover file in the location specified. Make sure that you have specified a valid location for Autoreover files in Preferences,…"

    It sounds like if you open Preferences in Word there will be a place where you can specify where to store autorecover files. Right now it sounds like it's pointing to somewhere that doesn't exist.

  • Unable to create a pdf file using the print routine

    Hey all,
    Recently, i've been unable to create a pdf using the print routine from quickbooks, word, outlook, etc... using the print routine and the adobe pdf driver....
    I have vista and cs3... Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

    If you are trying to print to the Adobe PDF printer and that fails, try using print-to-file. Then open the file in Distiller. If the result is the desired PDF, then check for AcroTray running as a background application. Sometimes it has to be restarted, but should be in your startup (you can check msconfig from the start>run menu to see if AcroTray is there).

    How do I access my encrypted User Account files from my Back Up hard drive?  Time Machine  was used to create the back up disk; File Vault was used to encrypt the files.

    Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
    Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into
    Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • How to encrypt file on linux using Gnupg command in Java Embedding in BPEL.

    Hi All,
    I am trying to invoke a command script using the java embedding in BPEL Process.I am using the below code to execute the particular command to encrypt the file :-
    try {
            Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process pr = rt.exec(new String[] {"/bin/bash", "-c", "/u01/GnuPG/bin/gpg", "-e", "-r", "Developer","/u01/oracle/ConfigFiles/Adapter_controlDir/abc.csv"});
             int exitVal = pr.waitFor();
            String result = "SUCCESS: Process exit with " + exitVal;
            addAuditTrailEntry("result = "+result);
            setVariableData("outputVariable","payload","/client:processResponse/client:result",result);
    } catch(Exception e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
      String result = "FAILURE: Exception with " + e.toString();
            addAuditTrailEntry("result = "+result);
            setVariableData("outputVariable","payload","/client:processResponse/client:result",result);
    The above statement does nothing. I am not sure what command i need to use to access to the command line.
    When i try this particular statement from linux machine command prompt :- /u01/GnuPG/bin/gpg -e  -r  Developer /u01/oracle/ConfigFiles/Adapter_controlDir/abc.csv
    It works absolutely fine and it creates the encrypted files also.
    Please suggest , which command i need to use from the java embedding.
    Please suggest!!
    Regards,
    Shah

    I think, you can try, writing these commands into a separate shell script and call that shell script from bpel via Java embedding. However, you might not get a return response.. but you can still give a shot.
    Hope it helps.

    I have a Nikon d610 and am using PS CS6. I am unable to download my raw files through Bridge on my mac. I have downloaded the most recent Camera Raw files - 8.7.1 - what should I do next.

    The D610 needs ACR 8.3 so you are easily covered there.  I am not entirely clear on the process you are using the bring the files onto your hard drive.  The safest way is to simply bring all the NEF files into a folder on your hard drive, then find them with bridge and open from there.
    If still stuck, open Photoshop, and go Help > About plugins > Camera RAW and check that 8.7 installed OK.
