Unable to use  transition options in slide show

I am unable to get the transition options to function properly on iPhoto 6. I always use the "effects" control box for each individual image, setting speed of transition and the picture's length of time on screen. The only one that works is the default/dissolve. The other transitions seem to work when I choose to set the slide show to music but that sets one transition for the entire slide show. Surprisingly, I sometimes can get those other options to work when I used the control at the bottom of the screen, the one right below my choice of converting the image to black and white or sepia. But it worked for the first few slides before it stopped. When I played the slide show, it defaulted to dissolve. When burn slide shows to iDVD, only dissolve transitions are enabled. How can I get the other transition options to work?

Have you tried deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, found in Users/Library/Preferences? First quit iPhoto, then delete the pref file, then restart and see if the problem resolves itself.

  • Using more than one transition in a slide show

Is there any way to use more than one transition in a slide show?
    Thanks,
    Steve G.

I do not yet own iDVD8 but I do know that transitions w/in iDVD6 are applied globally (same transition for each image).
The only way around this that I know of is to use another app like DVDSP (which allows you to change individual transitions and durations as well).

  • My photos are sharp but become soft when used in and IDVD slide show.

My photos are sharp but become soft when used in and IDVD slide show. How can I prevent this from happining??

    Hi,
I suggest that you try unchecking both of the crop options - landscape & portrait.
To re-create your situation, I had to check the crop for landscape pictures option.
I prefer to have control over any cropping so I tend to crop each image first before creating the slide show.

  • Using downloaded songs for slide show background music

Maybe I am naive, but I just joined iTunes and downloaded some music to use as background for slide shows of family pics. I am using Microsoft Plus! to put the slide shows together. The iTunes songs downloaded in MPEG-4 and the Plus! code will only recognize MP3. I am also concerned that the copyright protection will make the songs not useable for the slide show compilations. Any ideas? Thanks!

In iTUnes you can burn the song to CD then reimport it as a MP3. Goto edit>preferences>advanced tab>Import sub tab, and set it from "AAC" to "MP3" then hit OK
Now burn the songs to CD in itunes. Put the CD back in and hit the "Import" button in the top right corner of itunes

I would re-post in the iDVD forum.  You are likely to get a faster answer there.  Good luck.

The Mac software - iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD are not the best with the Ken Burns effect (zoom in/out effect), so you might want to minimize that effect; also, if your subjects are wearing stripes for instance, that will have an effect if you zoom. There is better software available for slideshows; however, I do not know of any that is free (and does a good job). I've used Photo to Movie for some time; it does a fine job even in HD, but you have to pay for it. I use iDVD extensively, but only to add a menu, theme, special effects, etc. and then to burn it.

  • Flickery transitions in iDVD slide show

I have burned two disks now using iDVD and had no trouble but I do have a question about transitions in slide shows. On the first disk I used a slide show (8 minutes, 99 images) with the “fit to music” option and the “use safe area” option for the display. The images were a little too small for my taste on my TV so I redid the show and unchecked the “safe” option. At the same time, I cut 9 of the slides but since I kept the “fit to music” option the timing was slightly slower. Fine, but I noticed that the dissolves between the images were “flickery” when compared to the first one on my TV. I had extracted the .dv of the first slideshow and included it on the second DVD so I could compare them directly and it’s true - they are smooth in the first but noticeably less so in the second, full screen, slideshow.
Has anyone else had this happen? Should I try to add nine more images back in? As it takes over an hour to burn this disk on my old, slow machine I'd rather ask first than attempt every possible variation on my own.
I can add that both disks were burned with the 60 minute “faster” rather than the 120 minute “better” quality mode. Since one doesn’t display the flickering I don’t really think the quality mode is relevant but who knows...

    Hi Rick:
Matti Haveri (one of the top rated iLife members) has done tests on this subject. here are his results:
    ----quote:
Movie slideshows tend to flicker with high-frequency images while "soft" images are OK.
So I did a quick test to see how the input image's resolution and blurring affects the output quality of those high-frequency images.
Test material: some 2048x1536 digital camera JPG images that had a lot of very sharp edges (buildings, thin wires, construction work scenes etc -- i.e. "high-frequency" images). I converted them to TIF so that there was no lossy JPG degradation involved. I manipulated the images in Photoshop as follows:
    1. original 2048x1536
    2. original bicubically resampled to 768x576. I guess also iPhoto bicubically resamples; at least the results are very similar. On the other hand, I believe Graphic Converter does not have bicubic resampling so I haven't got as good results with it.
    3. original bicubically resampled to 640x480
    4. original with 90° (vertical) 3 pixel Motion Blur. The idea is to blur only the horizontal thin lines which flicker on an interlaced TV. The vertical lines are unaffected by this filter.
    5. original with 1 pixel Gaussian blur. This blurs horizontally approximately as much as the 3 pixel Motion blur, but it blurs the image also vertically.
In iMovie's 4:3 PAL standard DV project (720x576) I applied to each image a) no Ken Burns and b) 1-5x zoomed 10 second Ken Burns. I did not let iMovie render the non-Ken Burns images while exporting the project to iDVD because that is a well-known source for bad quality.
I burned the project via iDVD's Best Performance to DVD and checked the result via an interlaced 28" CRT TV.
    The results:
#1-5 were all sharp with no Ken Burns as well as with 1x zoomed Ken Burns. But the higher resolution non-blurred input images were, in fact, TOO sharp and thus flickered on a TV:
    1. 2048x1536 flickered very badly with and without Ken Burns
    2. 768x576 flickered slightly less but also very disturbingly
    3. 640x480 flickered only little. But both #2-3 tolerated the 3-5x zoom very badly because the input resolution was so small. The zoomed-in image was too blurry and the details were lost.
    4. Vertical Motion Blur didn't flicker at all. But during the zoom there was some disturbing "living" in the vertical lines. Obviously the vertical lines must be blurred, too:
    5. Gaussian blur didn't flicker and the zooms were beautiful and peaceful. The Gaussian blur lost some fine detail in the zoomed-in image but the quality was very good. And the loss of fine detail is just a trade-off for the flickerless image.
In fact, I have had very similar results to #5 with Photo To Movie's High Quality setting. Also Toast's slideshows are of good quality. A lot of people have also been satisfied with Still Life and PhotoMagico.
    Conclusions:
    - iMovie should blur the images so they wouldn't flicker on a TV. Applying a small Gaussian blur to the input images seems like a good workaround.
    - Using Photo To Movie, Toast, Still Life and PhotoMagico and other 3rd party utilities are good alternatives, too.

  • Formats for movie clip used in PSE 4 slide show

Still finding it difficult to find documentation of what formats are supported for using digital camera movie clips in PSE 4 slide show.
The movie file from my Canon camera is 640 x 480, 30 fps Motion JPEG and has a .AVI extension. I am able to use it "as is" in a PSE 4 slide show. However, sometimes I need to trim the movie clip in Windows Movie Maker 2 in order to keep only the best part.
My question is what parameters can I specify to save my movie clip in Movie Maker 2 so that I can use it as a movie clip in a Photoshop Elements 4 slide show that will be saved as a WMV file?

    Karin Sue,
    >Also, are the projects saved in a folder somewhere, or only as part of the Catalog?"
The definition of the "project", which is the "Creation" in Organizer terms is saved only in the Catalog.
    >If you publish your creation as a pdf or wmv they are saved in the folder you designate. Once published, I don't believe there is any way to edit. If you save the creation, you can go back and edit and republish if you like.
Yes, the WMV or PDF file is saved in the folder that you designate. You are correct that if you save the Creation, you can go back and re-edit. When you Save the Creation gets a thumbnail within the Organizer photo well and you can click on the thumbnail to go back in to the Creation process make modifications and save a new WMV or PDF file.
Note: that the Save window documents that the PDF choice does not support some options such as Pan and zoom, videos, and certain transitiions.

  • Transition selection for slide show.

Photoshop Album Starter edition 3.2 Windows XP. I could create custom slide show. I can still select duration of each slide but the transition period and transition mode fails. Shows error code c0000005, address 60cbb2af. Any idea what to do?

    Hi Evert,
Can you tell me two things:-
    1) Which slideshow you are talking about - PDF slideshow or FullScreen Slideshow.?
    2) Where is option to customize slideshow is present.
I do not see anty option in PASE 3.2 to customize slideshow like setting of transition period and transition mode etc.

  • Multiple transitions in one slide show

When using iDVD is there a way to apply transitions onto specific slides in a slideshow so that one slide show can have multiple transitions throughout? also is there a way to control the time of each specific time - ex one should be for 5 secs and the next for 3 secs?

You may want to consider an alternate app that specializes in slideshows.

  • Using FC Express for slide shows???

I would like to produce "slide" shows of my photography set to music with voiceovers to show with digital projector and to put on DVD. I really like the capabilities of ProShow Gold and ProShow Producer, but those programs won't run on a MAC. Can I do a slide show using Final Cut Express? Will it distort my photos because of rectangular pixels vs square pixels?
    Thanks for any help.

iDVD will do this. Basically you create an album in iPhoto, then open iDVD and import the album (Media pane > Photos, then drag the album to the DVD menu). You can change the sequence, add, delete images, change buttons, etc. (I think you can only apply one transition type, though, for the entire slide show.) You can also add an audio track and have iDVD adjust the slideshow timing to automatically fit the length of the audio.
I suppose you would have to call it DVD quality however I've done this and the results look great, at least for the intended audiences/purposes.
With regard to varying the effects/transitions between slides, we had to use iMovie or FCE for that. (That is, we had to build the slide show in iMovie or FCE then add the different transitions where we wanted them, then export to iDVD).

  • What format should I use for new  FCP slide show to DVD project?

I want to edit a slide show movie. I have all of the high resolution images. I plan on authoring the project to DVD 16:9 anamorphic with DVD SP. Later I would like to author to 1920 x 1080 HD on Blu-Ray. ( I can't afford Adobe BR authoring software at this time, I want to start with the DVD) I am looking for advice. I want the quality of DVD and future Blu-Ray to be best possible quality. I'm thinking there are two options I might use:
    1. Edit the FCP project in HD 1920 x 1080. Use Compressor to convert the sequence to 16:9 anamorphic for DVD SP input. I am thinking I will have the HD sequence ready for the Blu Ray in the future. I like this approach. Is the conversion possible with compressor? What exact format and frame rate should I use for the FCP project?
    2. Edit the FCP project in 16:9 Anamorphic. Compress for DVD SP input. I am not fond of this option. I don't look forward to making rectangular pixel images in Photoshop for one. That will be a lot of work for this project. I won't have an HD sequence ready for Blu Ray in future, I will have to start a new project from scratch to make the HD version.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Edit in a 1920x1080/30p Pro Res sequence settings.
Export that to a self contained movie current settings, and use which ever SD DVD preset to encode for use in DVD SP.
The self contained movie can eventually be used in Adobe Encore for blu ray authoring.
But having "high resolution" images/photos means nothing in video.
1 dpi is sufficient at 1920x1080 unless you plan to pan and zoom, in which case double the pixel size, not the dpi.
300 dpi produces no better image than 1 dpi.

  • Submenu transitions & Drop zone Slide Shows

    Two items:
Has anyone else run into these issues?
    1) Submenu transitions don't work properly in preview mode.
    2) When adding images for a slide show in a drop zone pane, the images are supposed to cycle--but mine don't unless I start fiddling with the loop time--which is not adequatley explained in the documentation.
    G5 Dual Core 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    G5 Dual Core 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Cycling does occur based upon the loop time chosen.

  • How to use video in a slide show

I've created slideshows in iPhoto and incorperated a mizture of photos and videos.
I've now made one using Aperture but the video does not play - it just shows the first frame. The video will play if I select it alone in the browser.
    Any suggestions.?
    Thanks.

Thanks Frank, I had watched that some time ago but it was good to be reminded of it.
What I was having problems with was running the slideshow in 'manual' mode ie starting it using the Play slideshow option and then moving on from slide to slide during my talk which has no set time for each slide.
What I discover is that using the keyboard or mouse, in effect, puts the show on pause. Using arrows or mouse moved the show forward but to show video it is necessary to press space to cause it to run and then pause it again - or set slides to a very long display time.
Anyhow, unless there's a neater solution this is workable.

  • Add a fade-to-black transition in the slide show

This quickly fades an image to black before quickly fading-in the next image. This avoids double-image effects during image transitions, and still gives a nice smooth fading effect. Double images are particularly distracting when two contiguous images are only slightly different a common situation in photo shoots.
