UNICODE font displays as JUNK character in PDF version of Report 10.1.2.0.2
Hi All,
I am using Application Server 10g on windows 2003 r2. when i generate reports through application server, it displays JUNK characters where UNICODE fonts are used.
After some trial and error, we found that a particularly badly written report was taking 10 minutes to process (it really should have only taken a few seconds). The users were getting impatient, killing the application from their terminal, and resubmitting the report, over and over and over....
We re-wrote the query in the report, and with the report processing in an acceptable time, we did not re-experience the issue.

Arabic letters are displayed as junk character in PDF preview
When we try to view (HFR Financial reports in PDF preview Arabic letters are displayed as junk character. While the same is shown correctly in HTML view.
Oracle EPMA version we are using 11.1.1.3, please provide some solution on this issueThis could help if you are connecting to essbase or planning:
1.Set the ESSLANG environment variable on the Essbase server to
ESSLANG= Arabic - Saudi Arabia (ISO)@Binary
2. In Financial Reporting, you must use the Essbase APS ADM driver rather then the Essbase Native ADM driver. Set the driver in \Hyperion\products\biplus\lib\fr_global.properties by setting the parameter
UseEssbaseEDS=1
3. In \Hyperion\products\biplus\lib\fr.env, set the ESSLANG environment variable as follows:
ESSLANG= Arabic - Saudi Arabia (ISO)@Binary
4. Re-start the Essbase and Financial Reporting services. -
Substitution string used in custom Report column name does not display in PDF version of report
I am using Apex 4.2.6.00.03, Apex Listener 2 via Glassfish4 and have set up all my applications and reports on this system. We previously used Oracle 10.2, with Apache with a custom fopping document.
My issue is that I have a report that has custom column headings using a substitution string to pull in the begin or end date for the report. When the report is run and displayed, the column headings appropriately display the date. However, when I try to set up the Print to PDF option, the column headings are not displaying correctly.
Is it possible to use a substitution string in the column heading? I am able to use the substitution string in the Page Header and Page Footer and those display correctly.
In the Report Attributes setup I have set the "Strip HTML" to Yes and I have four columns that are using the &"ITEM NAME". string. See below for actual display:
The report column headings in APEX displays correctly (bold is the substitution detail):
Fund Account Description Balance 07/01/2014 Budget/Goal FY 14-15 YTD Actual 02/28/2015 Ending Balance 02/28/2015
In the Print Attributes setup, when I get to the Report Columns section, the Heading column displays the headings as set up in the Report Attributes custom and I am not able to edit these names. See below:
In the version of the report that is Printed to PDF I get the following for display:
Fund Account Description Balance %26amp;P347_BEGIN_DATE. Budget/Goal %26amp;P347_FY. YTD Actual %26amp;P347_END_DATE. Ending Balance %26amp;P347_END_DATE.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
PatFirst, the misspelled word is a test object and not data.
Second, all data display correctly.
Third, text object is displaying the old misspelled word.
Fourth, I have eliminated the possibility that problems in of my pdf export routine cause this issue by exporting directly from Crystal Reports Viewer. I print the report to the crystal report viewer. The report looks good. The text object is spelled correctly. Then I click the Crystal Reports viewer's export button in the left upper corner and I export to both EXCEL and PDF. The excel export looks good. The pdf export is misspelled. All the export occurs internally in Crystal reports.
Fifth, I found outthat all users who have this problem have the ADOBE PDF writer installed. I am just suspicious that ADOBE writer is interferring with Crystal export
Sixth, I cannot recreate this problem on any of our development and test machines. It only happens on end-user laptops.
Seventh, I changed the name of the report that had this problem and created a new version and installed on end-user laptop. The behaviour still persists. User saved the report as both RPT and PDF. RPT export looks good. PDF version has the spelling problem. Data on both reports is up-to-date and good. I copied the same RPT export to my PC and exported it to PDF, the pdf looks good. That is why I think something on the end-users laptops is causing the export to use some cached template.
One more thing I did was to change the report name in VB.NET project, recreated a new package and installed on end-user's laptop. The same exact problem is still there.
I have worked with Crystal Reports more than 15 years and I have never such a weird behaviour before. I know this sounds very weird. We are all baffled by what is happening. -

PDF Format Oracle Reports font issue
My process is generating the batch oracle Reports.
Their key map is:
Key1: %* server=server1 userid=xxxs/xxx@xxxx report=D:\sample.rdf destype=file desformat=PDF
My process is calling IAS server to generate report. IAS ser is generating and saving the report in the specified location.Reports are running on the server locally and DESTYPE=FILE. So the Oracle Reports output is saved on the server itself. Whenever i open the report on my machine/server i have font issue. Some of the reports has very tiny font. It seems the reports generated by using oracle reports which is Arial Unicode font type is causing the problem. If any reports other then Arial Unicode font like Arial Westrn, those reports are fine. We have 1000s of reports. So we don't want to change each report font type. For me it seems the issue is with the font on the server. Is there anyway to ask App server use Arial Westrn if Arial Unicode not found. How to make these configuration changes in the server. Any suggestions please.Maybe this helps or at least points you in some direction ...
Have a look at font aliasing when configuring Application Server : http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/bi.1012/b14048/pbr_font.htm#i1006140
If your Application Server is located on Windows I would suggest to install the fonts there.
In Unix, this a more complex task. -
Calculated Hex to Unicode for display in label
Hi
I want to calculate an integer, convert to unicode and display the appropriate character in a label. I can display the correct chinese character if I pass a string literal e.g. "\u4e00" to the setText method. But I dont want to have hardcoded string literals in my program. Of course the compiler insists on having the complete string before hand (i.e. cannot add the "\u" to my calculated hex string). So how can I get the label to display the actual character using just the hex number? Is it possible?

ECC6.0 - PDF issue - Junk Character output after Upgrade from 4.7c
Hi All,
I am working in Uprgade project(from 4.7c Non-unicode system to ECC6.0 unicode system).
We are facing PDF output issue in ECC6.0 that means we are getting junk character output(screenshot is attached for your reference).
In 4.7c , we have stroed the OTF data in table after generated from smartform as we should not get different output in future. Whenever we need output of the same then we are getting the OTF data from that table and we will generate pdf through "Convert_otf" function module.This logic is working fine in 4.7c.
In ECC6.0 ,the same logic is not working as system is unicode sytem and we are getting junk character output.
As per my old upgrade project experience , i have used the below piece of code for solve this junk character issue but still I am facing the same issue.
Kindly note that in my old upgrade project i have regenerated the OTF data in ECC6.0 and used the below piece of code then I got correct output but here I have to use the old OTF data (from table) which was generated in 4.7c.
Please any one can give solution for this issue.

Edited by: Anandakumar.K on Oct 25, 2011 12:54 PMHi,
as you can see in SAP notes 842767 and 1349413, spool data cannot be converted properly for all types in a Unicode conversion.
This might be possible if you have English (US7ASCII) characters only, but with Chinese characters I do not think that a small piece of code can do it ...
Hence I think you need to recreate the data on the Unicode system ...
Best regards,

Double byte characters turn into squares at PDF export use Unicode font
Hi all,
We developing with Visual Studio 2008, .NET 2.0 and Crystal Report XI Release 2 SP5 an international windows application. We use the font Arial Unicode MS in the rpt file. We translate the fix texts with the Crystal Translator (3.2.2.299).
On the distributed installation of our software, the printout and preview displays the double byte characters properly (Japanese, Korean, Chinese), but when we export the report as PDF, the characters get displayed with squares. This happens also, when the font Arial Unicode MS is installed on the distributed installation on Windows XP Professional.
I searched for hours for a solution in the knowlegde base articles and in forum of Crystal Report. I found one thread, which describes exactly our problem:
[Crystal XI R2 exporting issues with double-byte character sets|Crystal XI R2 exporting issues with double-byte character sets;
But we already introduced the solution to use Unicode font and I also linked the font Lucida Sans Unicode to the Arial Unicode MS, but we still face the problem.
Due to our release on thursday we are very under pressure to solve this problem asap.
We appreciate your help very much!
RonnyYour searches should have also come up with the fact that CR XI R2 is not supported in .NET 2008. Only CR 2008 (12.x) and Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008 (10.5) are supported in .NET 2008. I realize this is not good news given the release time line, but support or non support of cr xi r2 in .net 2008 is well documented - from [Supported Platforms|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/7081b21c-911e-2b10-678e-fe062159b453

Best I can suggest is to try SP6:

MSM:

MSI:
https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100000633302010E/crxir2sp6_net_si.zip
Failing that, you will have to move to a supported environment...

Logo in Smartform output to pdf format is coming as Junk Character
Hi All,
I have a requirement to generate the Smartform output in PDF file. But when i am doing that i am getting the LOGO as Junk character in the PDF file. Can any one help me to resolve this issue?.
Thanks,
Muruganand.KYes check the spool and the output displayed correctly in the spool it means there is a problem when you convert OTF to PDF. Check that part of the code and try different options.

Can't display non-unicode font
When I try to use Symbol font and display it in JLabel, it show a square.
i have read the article written by John O'Conner
http://www.joconner.com/javai18n/articles/TextDisplay.htm.
Thanks for providing those valuable information. it does help to understand some international issue.
however, I am not sure if it apply to Symbol font such as Wingdings, webdings.
Font fontPalatino = new Font( "Palatino LinoType", Font.PLAIN, 25); //unicode font
Font fontMapInfo = new Font( "MapInfo Transportation", Font.PLAIN, 25); // non-unicode font
Font fontWingdings = new Font( "Wingdings", Font.PLAIN, 25);
// use integer number and convert into equivalent character
// e.g. if i is 65 then c is A.
// notes: 65 is a decimal value converted from hex 0041 value
int i = 65;
char c = (char)i;
System.out.println( new Character(c).toString() );
JLabel jlbl = new JLabel();
jlbl.setFont(fontSymbol);
jlbl.setText( new Character(c).toString() );1) I can't display any Wingdings font , any expert can help on this?
2) what is the difference between 0021(character code for Arial font) and 0x21(character code for Wingdings font) shown in character map?When I try to use Symbol font and display it in
JLabel, it show a square.
i have read the article written by John O'Conner
http://www.joconner.com/javai18n/articles/TextDisplay.htm.
Much of that article is now incorrect or unnecessary for JDK 1.5. Because 1.5 knows how to find a font for the character you're trying to display, you should be able to set your label font to any logical font, and the JRE should find a substitute font if necessary that can display the character.
I'll give your code a try and will post results...is the code you've posted the code I should actually experiment with? It seems like you should want to display something different than 0x0065.
Your other questions:
0x0021 is the exclamation mark regardless of font. I see what you mean, however, since the wingdings font in charmap also says 0x0021. However, that mapping is obviously not a Unicode code point mapping.
I looked in the Misc. Symbols and Dingbats section of Uncode. A few characters might be a reasonable substitution for the pencil character you want:
0x270E (LOWER RIGHT PENCIL)
0x270F (PENCIL)
0x2710 (UPPER RIGHT PENCIL)
I didn't see any mirror images of these, ie LOWER LEFT PENCIL and UPPER LEFT PENCIL, although I admit that I didn't look closely.
Maybe one of these will work for you instead of the Wingdings 0x21 character you mentioned.

John O'Conner -
I pruned my fonts back last week, but removing them from my System Folder, but now the Unicode fonts are not displaying in my web browser (maybe same in other apps, but haven't noticed). What specific font is used for Unicode display?
Thanks.Tom-I appreciate the response. I'm trying to get the 3-line list menu "hamburger" icon to appear with character \2630. Since I removed the bulk of my fonts, this appears as a missing link in my web browsers. Not sure which of the various fonts may include this character.

Flex3 Not Displaying Sinhala Unicode Fonts in the MXML File
I am using Flex 3.2 for my project.
I want use Sinhala Unicode Fonts But inside the Mxml File I cannot type the Sinhala Characters.
When I change the Keyboard to Sinhaha inside the Flex3 Sinhala Characters are not dispalying.
But when I run the application I can see the fonts in the Browser.
I am using Windows 7.
Thanks
ShumsThanks Tom. Yeah, I understand that PDFs are not designed to work like word-processing files, etc., and the need to have the Chinese text copy over well is really just to prove that the document is searchable (i.e. if it can copy a short section of text Ok, then it means the characters are recognized by the PDF reader and I can search the document, which is my main goal.)
The problem I mentioned with Preview, etc., is actually a new one; one that has become a big problem for me only in the last few weeks. Before, I never had this issue. I'm not sure what changed, but I was suspecting MacKeeper and their "language cluster" cleaning feature, where it "helps" you by removing unused fonts. Though, I can't quite confirm that this has played a role. I just completely reinstalled the OS thinking that this would fix the issue by installing all the original fonts again, if MacKeeper did indeed remove the fonts these PDF programs use when editing or saving PDF files. However.....unfortunately....the problem is still here.
So, that developer I mentioned in the first thread who said this is an OS X issue may indeed be correct.
And just to be clear, I have confirmed that the PDF's I working with do have the fonts embedded already. It is only when I alter them and then save or export from Preview, Skim, Nomad, etc., that the character information gets stripped out and I'm left with a document that one can read but cannot search. I can't even OCR it because this problem also affects my OCR software, as if it can't get access to the fonts needed to embed in the recognized PDF.
Any other thoughts? I'd appreciate any you have. -
Missing Unicode font in Character Viewer
The OS 10.6 Character Viewer has a View menu from which one can select the Glyph mode then select a font from the Font menu. How can I get Lion's CV to display my Unicode font and allow me to insert its characters into documents?
jkent4mac wrote:
The CSTwo and CSThree fonts are from the ChordSymbol2 family. They were developed by John Clelvenger and are sold through The Virtual Conservatory (www.virtualconservatory.com).
Thanks for that info! I found a character map at
http://www.wix.com/virtualconservatory/home#!menu/vstc1=character-maps
It's a bit odd they would call these "unicode" fonts, since they replace almost all the required unicode glyphs with specialized music symbols. Normally they would be called "non-unicode" unless they put all that into the Private Use Area.
Glad you were able to solve your problem! -

Unicode Font in a PDF report (iTextSharp)
I tried to use unicode font (Arial Unicode MS - arialuni.ttf) in a PDF document generated with iTextSharp. I am able to create the PDF document with this font.
In the iTextSharp documentation, we are suppose to be able to send unicode, but I don't understand how to do this in Labview.
I read A List of Tips and Tools for using Unicode in LabVIEW but I am stuck. Any ideas?

1) I found no way to connect a LabVIEW string to an Unicode iTextSharp phrase or paragraph;
2) The only way I found is to add a .NET string (mscorlib.system.string --> Unicode Basic Multilingual Plane) to an iTextSharp phrase or paragraph.
3) You construct this .NET string with an array of UTF16.
To construct the U16[ ]:
1) I wrote the text in NotePad (Unicode).
2) I copy the string in a LabVIEW string (not Unicode);
3) I remove the BOM;
4) I swap the bytes (2 bytes by to 2 bytes) and I typecast in U16.
