Unicode numbers in AI CS2

Hi there,
Is there any possibility in Illustrator CS2 to find out a single character's Unicode number after having marked it before?
I'm gonna have to establish character translation charts between Freehand MX (for Apple) and AI CS2 (for PC). As you know, lots of special font isn't transferred correctly between these.
Some of the adulterated characters look that similar that it would be fine, if there would be a way to find out their Unicode number directly (see above).
E.g. when you have something that looks like "`", it's very difficult to see if it is an apostrophe, a single quotation mark, a grave or an acute.
Although that character MUST have exactly ONE specific Unicode number, so: how to find out it without guessing?
Thanks in advance,
Johan

When you highlight (select) a single character with the text tool, the corresponding entry in the Glyphs palette will be highlighted. If you run your mouse pointer over that highlighted character in the palette, the Unicode number for that character will be shown at the top of the palette.

• Numbering sections in CS2

Hi I'm an inexperienced user & I have documents of between 20 - 60 pages. I have a table of contents on the first page, and I have sections;
Tendering Documents
Examples of previous work
Contract
Payment Schedule
Risk Assessment
Method Statement
Then to the right I have the page numbers, I was hoping to have section markers or something like that to automatically number what page they are on as bigger jobs have say 15 tendering pages whereas smaller jobs have only 2 pages in this section.
Is what I'm after possible?
Thanks

Have you looked at using the Table of Contents feature in InDesign? It sounds like that's what you are after?
Although this older blog-post isn't from CS2, it should help you understand how this works: http://carijansen.com/2009/03/22/tip-085/
Also have a look in the index of your CS2 Help and locate "Table of Contents" to read-up about it a bit more.

Your serials are registered on your account. If not and you haven't written them down anywhere, then there is nothing nayone can do - Adobe doesn't know what you don't know.

• (Internationalization) - Unicode and Other ... Encoding Schemes

Hello,
I am developing a application that requires multiple languages
(Chinese/Japanese/English, French/German) support.
I plan to use utf-8 encoding, and not individual encoding for each language
like SHIFT_JIS for Japanese, BIG5 for Chinese etc.
This is more so because i would need to display multiple languages on the
same page, and allow the user to enter data in any language he/she chooses.
1. So, is the assumption that nothing but utf-8 can be used here, correct ?
2. If this is the case, why do people go for SHIFT_JS for Japanese or BIG5
for Chinese at all ? After the advent of Unicode, why cant they just use
utf-8.
3. I am using Weblogic 6. And my app is composed of JSPs alone at the
moment. It is working fine with utf-8 encoding, without me setting anything
at all in properties files etc. anywhere. I am getting data entered by user
in forms (in chinese/japanese etc) fine, and able to insert it into the
database and get it back too, without any problems.
So, why is it that people are talking of parameters to be set in properties
files to tell the app abt encoding being used etc.
4. My resource bundles are ASCII text files (.properties) which have name
value pairs. Hex Unicode numbers of the form /uXXXX represent the value. And
this works fine.
For example :
UserNameLabel = ã‹ã
instead of -
UserNameLabel = ãf¦ãf¼ã
If the properties files have the original characters where values shud be
present, my java code is not able to read the name value pairs in Resource
Bundle.
Am i following the right approach ?
The problem with the current approach is after i create the Resource
Bundles, i must use native2ascii compiler to convert the characters into
their equivalent Hex Code values.
Thanks
JSB

Unicode states that each character is assigned a number which is unique, this number is called code point. Right.
The relationship between characters and code points is 1:1.Uhm .... let's assume "yes" for the moment. (Note that the relationship between the Java type char and code point is not 1:1 and there are other exceptions ...)
Eg: the String *"hello"* (which is sequence of character literals) can be represent by the following Code Points
*e H l l o*Those are the Java String unicode escapes. If you want to talk about Unicode Codepoints, then the correct notation for "Hello" would be
U+0048 U+0065 U+006C U+006C U+006F
Note that you swapped the H and e.
I also read that a certain character code point must be recognized by a specific encoding or else a question mark (?) is output in place of the character.This one is Java specific. If Java tries to translate some unicode character to bytes using some encoding that doesn't support that character then it will output the byte(s) for "?" instead.
Not all code points can be recognized by an encoding.Some encodings (such as UTF-8) can encode all codepoints, others (such as ISO-8859-*, EBCDIC or UCS-2) can not.
So, the letter *ל* would not be recognized by all encodings and should be replaced by a question mark (?) right?Only in a very specific case in Java. This is not a genral Unicode-level rule.
(disclaimer: the HTML code presented was using decimal XML entities to represent the unicode characters).
What you are seing is possibly the replacement character that your text rendering system uses to represent characters that it knows, but can't display (possibly because the current font has no character for them).

pls anyone solve my problem . i will be very thankful !

When you enter unicode characters in html it will automatically converted to the unicode numbers (I don't know what name they use to call such case) eg &1234;
This is not an unknown format, but that's the unicode number of the character.
Eventhough stored in that format, you still can display the character properly by using <bean:write> tag, but rememebr to set filter='false'

There is persistent confusion over the Creative Suite version numbers.
Indesign CS2 (version 4.0) is three versions newer than Indesign 1.0
(which was not part of any Creative Suite). You're not going to be able
to do anything with Indesign 1.0 (or 1.5) except open Indesign 1.0 (or
1.5) files.
Indesign 1.0 came out in 1999, and the Indesign 1.5 upgrade came out in
2001. Indesign CS2 came out in 2005. Your files are less than three
years old, but you want to be able to open them with 10-year-old software.
The only way you're going to be able to open ID CS2 files is if you get
your hands on ID CS2 (version 4), CS3 (version 5), or CS4 (version 6).

• UFL to convert numbers to Turkish words

Happy New Years to everyone and all that stuff.
I have had a look through a couple posts that refer to Turkish characters and a am hoping my idea of
creating a UFL that converts a number (passed in as a string) and then outputs the Turkish words for
the number, is possible or atleast on the right track.
This is my Turkish.properties file
0=su0131fu0131r
1=bir
2=iki
3=üç
To get Eclipse to accept these characters I tried setting the encoding to UTF-8 but eclipse said
UTF-8 conflicts with the encoding defined in the content type (ISO-8859-1)
Do you with to set it anyways?
Which I did and it seemed to keep the correct format for all that characters
I then created my UFL to just take a str_Key which is the number and the resBundleName (Turkish)
and I output the correct string. Just for testing I only worked with single digit numbers.
I then made my UFL avaliable to all my reports and created a test report.
The only problem was when previewing the output, it was no longer the correct UTF-8 characters
but the incorrect ISO-8859-1 characters ( I assume its this encoding as I tested what happens if
I save my properties file in that encoding and they seem the same messed up characters)
I have tried setting the "Text file encoding" for the report (right click - properties) but that makes
no difference.
So my question is:
Is it possible to create a UFL that will convert a number to Turkish words?
If so, where am I going wrong, is there another encoding setting I need to set?
Will I have future problems when trying to export to PDF?
Does anyone else have another idea on how best to convert numbers to Turkish words
if using a UFL and resource bundle is not the best idea?
Sorry thats 4 questions not 1 but hey, its my first post of the new year
Thanks all.

Thanks Ted,
I did a simple test (which I really should have done before) where I placed Turkish characters in a report
formula and it displayed the correct characters, so that confirms what you said in that its not the report
error, but rather on the java side of things.
I will try fiddle with things and work out how to get the Java side of things accepting the Turkish characters.
I might come back here to ask a few questions if I get stuck, so will leave this open as it still deals with the topic.
Thanks again
Darren
Right Ted, thanks for that advice, I have managed to get correct characaters using the ı format
for example
0=ı
1=Ð
2=Ðı
Now the big question is where can i find a list of all the Unicode escapes (\u....) for Turkish equivilant?
Even though this is a real pain, to convert from English to Turkish to Unicode, would have thought
there would be an easier why, but this does do the job.
So I will continue looking for a list of all Unicode numbers (any body know if there is a app out there
that can do it all for me??)

• Request for enhancement

I've been using JDeveloper 9i for about 6 months now. In the beta releases there were some
annoying bugs, but those seem to have been fixed in the final version. So now I'm mostly
satisfied with the product. It's a great IDE with a lot of nice features. I've decided to
use it instead of JBuilder mostly because of the price. The reason I'm posting this is that
there are some minor things that I would like to be improved in the product. Some of them I
consider bugs, other missing features. Hardly any of them are really serious, but they can
get annoying when you're doing something every day. Some of these I've grown accustomed to
in other IDEs. Maybe you've heard about some of these things before. Maybe you've already
fixed some of them. Well here we go:
1. It is not possible to replace text only within the selected area of a file. The replacement
always affects the whole file.
2. The only way to accept a suggestion from Code Insight is to press enter. It would be nice
if you could also use the next logical operator like . (dot). Then the editor should insert the
selected suggestion followed by . and start Code Insight again on the next level of the expression.
3. Copying text does not always work. Sometimes I have to press Ctrl+C many times for the text
to be copied. I have a feeling this happens when I do it too quickly. Could be a general Java bug.
Also it seems to only happen on my home PC which is very slow (300 mHz). It's too slow for
JDeveloper anyway, so I need a new one. JDeveloper, like all IDEs written in Java, is very
resource intensive. I guess that's just a fact of life.
4. I would like automatic indent after {
5. I would like } to automatically align with the corresponding {
6. When inserting Code Templates you have to know the exact code for a template. It would be nice
to be able to type only part of the code and have the editor show me a list of templates whose code
start with those characters.
7. In the dialog box for overriding methods you have to use the mouse to check which methods to
override. I would like to be able to use the space bar for that purpose.
8. The dialog boxes for implementing interfaces and overriding methods do not work for inner
classes.
9. Code Insight does not always work. Sometimes the list of suggestions only includes classes
and not variables and methods in the current class/method. This seem to happen only when the cursor
is to the right of an operator, including comma. So for instance Code Insight works for the first
argument in a method invocation, but not for subsequent arguments. And it works for the left hand
side of an addition, multiplication etc., but not for the right hand side.
10. When you add a new variable in the class editor, you cannot declare its type as an array.
11. In the debugger it would be nice to have breakpoints that would fire when the value of a
variable changed.
12. In the debugger it would be nice to be able to evaluate and watch the result of method calls.
13. It would be nice to have a tool to internationalise and localise an application's hard coded
text strings.
14. It would be nice to have numbered bookmarks in the editor. Press one key combination to set
a bookmark and another one to jump back to that same bookmark.
15. In the class editor there is another small problem. When you tell it to make a property bound,
it adds the methods addPropertyChangeListener/removePropertyChangeListener/firePropertyChange and
the variable propertyChangeSupport. This is good, but the problem is that JDeveloper doesn't look in
the superclasses to see if they already contain these methods/variables.
16. In the property editor you cannot set the displayed mnemonic of a JLabel to a character. You have
to use the character code.
17. When you edit a property in the property editor and then press enter the focus moves to the first
property.
18. In the property editor when you edit a property that has a drop down list of possible values, you
cannot change the value using the keyboard (at least not by pressing enter). This may be a Java bug.
19. In the property editor the property horizontalAlignment cannot be changed at all. For instance I
get a message like "Field RIGHT not found in class javax.swing.JTextField".
20. The Oracle JVM doesn't handle class and method names that use the special Norwegian characters
with these unicode numbers: 198 216 197 230 248 229
According to the Java standard it should, and the Sun JVM has always done so.
21. Finally, one thing that would be really nice is for the UI editor to support visual form inheritance
like Delphi does. I don't think any Java IDEs do, and it's the thing that I miss the most.

16. In the property editor you cannot set the displayed mnemonic of a JLabel to a character. You have
to use the character code. This has been fixed in the soon to be availabel release 9.0.3
17. When you edit a property in the property editor and then press enter the focus moves to the first
property.This has been fixed in the soon to be availabel release 9.0.3
18. In the property editor when you edit a property that has a drop down list of possible values, you
cannot change the value using the keyboard (at least not by pressing enter). This may be a Java bug.This is a known bug; 2157458
19. In the property editor the property horizontalAlignment cannot be changed at all. For instance I
get a message like "Field RIGHT not found in class javax.swing.JTextField". Works fine in the soon to be available release 9.0.3. The problem was that the SwingConstants import was not being
added. There does remain, however, a similar bug (2337382) where constants inherited via an interface will still
produce the same problem (e.g. setting orientation property of JScrollPane which implements SwingConstants). This
is still sceduled to be addressed in 9.0.3.
21. Finally, one thing that would be really nice is for the UI editor to support visual form inheritance
like Delphi does. I don't think any Java IDEs do, and it's the thing that I miss the most. Some work has been done in this area for 9.0.3 which will improve the user experience (user will see an accurate
portrayal of the superclass available for design, however access to inherited members is not yet ready). There still
remains more work to do in this area that is currently scheduled for release 9.0.4..

• What's Going On With Adobe's New Upgrade Policy?

My old system died today, so I quickly finished the new system I was building to get up and running as quickly as possible. I tried to re-install my 2 year old copy of CS5 on the new machine, and see at the licenseing step that I had to have either CS3 or 4 extended serial numbers, or a CS2 number. I had CS2 many years ago, but that's long gone. I still have my standard copy of CS3--which was good enough for upgrading when I bought CS5 and originally installed itunder current upgrade terms at the time. Now it seems it's not good enough even to reinstall on a new box. And to top things off, Adobe takes weekends off, so I can't even get this resolved until Monday. How much is Adobe paying these days for lost time when they lock you out of your legally owned and licensed Adobe product? Why can't I even go from CS3 to CS5? I thought that was going to be the new, revised requirement, but I can't even do that.
Can you tell I'm a bit upset? I need access to PS and Bridge NOW, and I can't do anything. I've been told Adobe is far from customer friendly these days, but I had no idea just how true that is.
Is there some sort of work-around, or am I just out of luck until Monday? Thanks...

Thanks for responding, guys. (Yes, this is actually Hilstudio1--I seem to have logged in with an old email address I used to use--but not on the forums--and Adobe wanted me to choose a screen name. Couldn't find a way to log out and then rejoin with the Hilstudio1 email, so now I have two names!)
Anyway, the old machine died with a corrupted OS (long story, but my fault) and my repair guy came by, spent about 2 hours (but only charged me for one), and said forget this machine, just finish the new one. That's what I did. of course, this meant I was not able to deactivate PS before I installed a fresh copy of CS5 on the new box. When I tried to enter the license, I started having issues, long before getting to the activation point.
I originally upgraded two years or so ago to CS5 from CS3, and that was not an issue. And Saturday, I was able to enter the CS5 license ok, but when I entered the CS3 license as the upgraded product, I was told it wasn't an eligible product to use for an upgrade to CS5. It had to be either CS2, or CS3/4 extended. If CS3 standard was good enough to upgrade to CS5 standard two years ago, why not now? I was finally able to find my CS2 registration here on the Adobe site, and it did accept that license. So, I finally got licensed, but I still don't understand the issue that causes the CS3 licence to be ineligible now.
And today, even though I was able to *initially* activate CS5 on the new machine, I'm getting an inelligible for activation message, because it's already installed on two computers. True, but I can't inactivate the old one 'cause it's dead and gone. Why not have a 'button' to push that will start some process in events such as mine--or maybe just keep customer service hours that are comparable to most other large software companies? The inability to deactivate a copy of PS because of a dead computer can't be all that uncommon. I'm so happy that Adobe finds they can maintain banker's hours for customer support while their efforts to protect against even a quarter's worth of potential illegal software use goes on 24/7, affecting even legally licensed users doing nothing wrong. (Yeah, I'm still just a tad upset! )
Thanks again--

• CS2/CS3/CS4: Cannot get file path in Unicode of the current document on Windows

Hi All,
In my automation plugin I need to have full absolute path of the opened document with any possible non-English letters. Using SDK examples Listener and Getter that come with Photoshop SDK the full absolute path which I obtain is in the default ANSI code page (CP_ACP) and I can convert it to Unicode using MultiByteToWideChar() API. However this works well when I have corresponding to document name language set in the "Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Advanced -> Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use." For example if name of the document has Russian letters and chosen language in "Regional and Language Options" is also Russian the described conversion works well. If I change "Regional and Language Options" to English for example, full path returned by Photoshop SDK API (AliasToFullPath in PIUFile.cpp) for the document with Russian letters will contain "????????.psd" symbols.
So I need to have an ability to get absolute file path in Unicode. Is it possible in Photoshop CS2/CS3/CS4 for Windows? I have searched forum and SDK but could not find info on it.
Is it possible to have native HANDLE of the opened file to get file info using Windows API?
Please advice.
