Universal cable remote with Mini

I am using a Mini as a media server for my home theatre setup. I would like to get rid of the Apple remote so I only have to use one remote device. I have been able to program my Cox cable universal remote to control all devices (SONY Bravia, Sony receiver, Moto cable box) using the 4-digit codes that came with the remote. Has anyone been able to control the Mini with such a remote? If so, what is the code?

Comcast support is terrible.
Their Mac tech support is very good in my experiences with them.
You are asking questions about a 3rd party product. You need to direct your questions to Comcast. Comcast Mac forums are sort of like these forums. If you cannot find your answers on their Mac forums then you will have no alternative but to call Comcast mac tech support. Ask to bumped up to tier 2 or 3 which is Mac support.

  • 40E220U TV interferes with Cable remote?

Purchased the 40E220U at Best Buy.  It does not seem to be compatible with the Motorola DCT700 digital cable box from RCN.
As long as the TV is powered up, the cable remote will not work.  Press Guide, Channel Up, Channel Down -- no response from the cable box.  Turn off the TV, press Guide, turn TV back on -- LOOK!  There's the guide!
You can not turn the cable box on, if you've turned the TV on first.  You can not turn the cable box off unless you have turned the TV off first.
I have tried moving the cable box as far away as the cables will allow, but the only thing that works is turning the cable box 90 degrees and at least two feet away from the TV. This makes aiming the remote a little difficult because you are now standing to the side of the TV.  In other words, when you can get the remote to work while facing the cable box, the TV looks like this --> |
I reset the TV to factory defaults with no results.  I changed batteries in the cable remote with no results.  I tried a cable box that was working fine in another room and it behaved exactly the same.  The first cable box was also working fine with the old TV.
    Any ideas?
    Solved!

I have the same problem, tape, paper, nothing works. The point is, I shouldnt have to put tape on my cable box for the remote to work.
Toshiba has horrible support, so if tape doesnt work, you are out of luck.
I will never ever buy a Toshiba product again. Between this TV and my laptop, Ive had enough problems to last a lifetime.

is it possible to use the apple remote with ipod mini dock

Would the apple remote and universal dock allow remote adjustment of the volume level when using and iPod mini? I know the nano and 5g support this feature but am unsure for the mini as my old 3g ipod only gave 'line out' via the dock.

  • Workaround for remote with Apple TV + Mac Mini media server?

We have to keep unplugging and then replugging our Apple TV 2 any time we want to use our Mac Mini media server instead of the Apple TV on our home entertainment system. Alas, the lack of a power button.
The reason we have to do this is because the remote control signals are identical for the two units; we're using Plex TV on the Mac Mini, and when we use our universal remote, if the Apple TV is on, then unintended things happen in the background on the Apple TV any time we control the Plex media server. Ack. We could end up buying a video that we don't want.
What workarounds are there, to avoid plugging and unplugging the Apple TV, if we want to keep using a remote control with both the Apple TV and with the Mac Mini media server? I understand that plugging and unplugging it is not desireable.
On the other hand, we do shut off power completely to our entire entertainment system, via the power conditioner, when we're not using it, to conserve. I suppose that's equivalent to plugging and unplugging the Apple TV?
    Your thoughts?

I know its been 17 months since anyone replied to your post, but I stumbled upon your request, because I had the same issue. However, I can faithfully say that I solved this same problem, because I inadvertendly programmed my MX-980 remote to control my Apple TV and Mac Mini at the same time and didn't realize until much later what was happening. I use my Mac Mini (for the purpose of using PLEX) and my Apple TV for other purposes. Here's a discussion I had over at remotecontrol.com about it.
The solution for you is have two Apple remotes. You can buy an extra apple remote at a good price over at Amazon.
Out of box, the apple remote is designed to pair with your Mac and Apple TV as long as pairing is enabled on those machines by default. However, it's the consumer's responsibility to physically pair that remote with the machine you want to control so it can't control any other machine. That's the trick you were missing...
So, if you have an Apple TV and Mac Mini next to each other -- a single Apple Remote will control BOTH machines at the same time out of box. This is not the intended result as you have indicated. Therefore you need two apple remotes.
Mac Mini: Once you have two apple remotes, go to your Mac Mini (OSX 10.9) and select under the Apple menu > Preferences > Security > General > Click unlock (bottom left corner) first > sign in > Then click Advanced... to see the Pairing process. If you click advanced *before* you click unlock icon, the pairing menu will be missing.
Note: You can also install free CandleAir preference for your Mac which is a slick interface for configuring apple remotes faster and easier IMHO. http://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/
Apple TV: Now take your second Apple Remote, go to Apple TV > Preferences > General > Remote and follow the on screen instructions to properly pair your remote control.
    This should solve your problem.

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

You really need a newer Mac Mini with a true HDMI output, because that Mac Mini's DVI output does not support Audio.
You might try a 3.5mm to RCA adapter
from the Mac Mini's headphone jack to the TV's audio input,
but that would require being able to select the Audio input in the TVs menu while using it's HDMI input.
Optionally you could also use an external 2.1 Speaker System or patch the audio from the Mac Mini to your home stereo system to enhance that older Mac Mini's audio.

  • Would the Apple Universal Dock work with any cables?

Does anybody know if the Apple Universal Dock works with any A/V composite cables for video out from the iPhone or the Nano 3rd gen., or do I have to buy the Apple $50 cables too?

I have a U2 iPod, and I can connect it to the TV with regular composite (RCA) splitter cables getting video and audio out.... I tried and now I know that I can't use the same cables to get video out of the iPhone or the 3 gen Nano, but I thought that using the Apple Universal Dock I could. So you are saying that even using the Dock I need the 30 pin to get video out?

  • Your thoughts.. lack of functionality Apple Universal Dock Remote Control

Most of us that toy around with the a/v out capabilities of the Touch are aware that standard remote control functionality is not currently available with the Apple Universal Dock remote. I can understand how mapping the multi-touch functionality to the remote's 'standard iPod wheel' functionality is like mapping apples (no pun intended) to oranges. But, I would imagine a firmware update could do the trick. However, I think it would be really cool (and expensive) to create a mini multi-touch remote.
I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.
I have posted my enhancement request, firmware upgrade first.. new remote second... to Apple's feedback site... please send in your comments if you feel the same way I do... they do listen...

What happens when you try to use the remote with an iPod touch in an Apple Universal Dock? I'd been thinking of getting Apple's dock/remote, especially because the features guide says,
You can connect iPod touch to your TV and watch your videos on the larger screen. Use the Apple Component AV Cable, Apple Composite AV Cable, or other iPod touch compatible cable. You can also use these cables with the Apple Universal Dock, available separately, to connect iPod touch to your TV. (The Apple Universal Dock includes a remote, which allows you to control playback from a distance.)
Does the remote have only limited function, then? What does the remote do, or not do?

  • Universal IR remote

Hey i was wondering if there was any way or program to allow you to use (almost) ANY universal remote with my Mac Mini. I was looking around online and found something about the Apple TV having a new feature in the 2.3 firmware that allowed you to use any remote... is there any functionality built into leopard or any type of app that would let me do that? freeware would be preferred....

  • Universal dock remote control play/pause button doesn't work

    Hi all,
Ok since updating to Ipod touch software v2.2 I have been unable to use the play/pause button on my Apple universal dock remote, whilst my iPod touch is in the dock.
The volume controls and track next and previous buttons commands on the remote control work just fine.
I have tried unpairing and then pairing the remote with the universal dock but same issue. I thought that maybe the play/pause key was possibly broken. However I tested the remote on my iMac and play/pause button works fine in front row.
Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Strange thing is mine started working again last night and is still working. Seems the problem went away as it originally appeared. I hope it doesn't stop working.
I will mark this thread as unanswered until we can figure why the remote, universal dock and iPod touch are behaving this way.

  • Anyone else having trouble connecting MBP with thunderbolt port (TBp) and 27"iMac with mini display port (MDp)

I have a 27" Imac.i7 with mini displayport and MBP13 i5 with thunderbolt port. Some time ago I tried to connect my old MBP with miniDP  to The 27"iMac I Failed so did the apple centre they refunded cable costs and said I'd be contacted by Cupertino. That was 9 months ago, now replaced MBP with 13 inch(**** I can use my iMac as display!). Does not work phoned Fast Lane very helpful guy called JIM emailed me some software/firmware update links.  Still no display linking. One of the links was for a couple of updates for a TBp equiped 27" iMac mine is only MDp equiped. Failing to find any MDp updates in apple support.  Anyone have any Ideas!  My lad has a later 27"i5 he uses Xbox 360 no problem on his but it wont look at my MBP.
Beginning to feel like some of the kit that went with a fully loaded 5500 worked eventually. Computer and FM radio, Photography kit fine, video capture audio capture forget it.  Too many crashes and resets made it impractical.

  • No audio with mini-DVI to HDTV

Hi - I know this is a tired discussion but I haven't been able to find an answer. Can you help?
    Here is my tv: http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-42LE5400-led-lcd-tv
Here is a picture of the back of the tv:
I have a late 2007 (3,1) Macbook and an LG LED LCD model 42LE5400 tv. I'm trying to get audio and video to the tv. Video works perfectly but I have no audio.
I have a mini-DVI adapter connected to a HDMI cable running to the HDMI1 spot on the tv.
I also have a male-male audio cable with a y-RCA adapter (red and white ends).
I understand that the HDMI cable won't carry audio through the mini-DVI and that I may need external speakers but I want to explore all the options before resorting to that, since I don't have a stereo sound system. I do have some cheapie desktop computer speakers, however.
So. Which jack to I plug the audio cable into? I've tried lots of things, including the regular headphone jack. Still nothing.
    Thanks for any help!
    Sara

Here is the solutuion! This is a picture of the correct placement of cables, making it possible to watch an older Macbook on a newer tv.
    First, the details:
The laptop: regular old Macbook 3,1, late 2007 running OSX 10.5.8
The tv: a now discontinued LG model 42LE5400. It's a 42" LED LCD.
The cables and adapters: I purchased this set of cables online. It was pretty reasonably price, but I'm sure the same ones are available on Amazon for less. This link is for cables specific to my computer, make sure to choose the ones that'll work for your system.
    http://www.macbook2tv.com/p/mac-mini-dvi-to-hdmi-kit-with-audio.html
The kit comes with a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter, an HDMI cable, an audio cable with standard 3.5 ends, and a Y-like RCA adapter (red and white connectors). I didn't need the RCA adapter.
Attach the HDMI cable to the mini-DVI adapter and plug it into the mini-DVI port on the Macbook. The HDMI cable then runs from the computer to one of the HDMI inputs on the tv.
Plug one end of the audio cable into the headphone jack on your Macbook. The other end goes into the RGB/DVI input on the tv.
Turn on the tv, select the HDMI input and after some flashing screens you should be set!
    Hope this helps!
