Universal Crossgrade?

Last year I bought an iMac G5 with Logic Express preinstalled on the system, so I still have the install disks. I was wondering if I'd be eligible for the crossgrade price if I bought a MacBook Pro and copied the program over to the MBp hard drive. Also, what is the crossgrade price, and what is the performance like?

Thanks, it's a little reassuring at least. Does the crossgrade install completely from scratch, or do I need to patch it over the original ppc install?

DEEPLY unhappy. I own a Macbook Pro, live in the UK and want to get a universal version of FCP. I look on the website and get the only crossgrade form has a US address. We phone Apple UK to ask if there is a UK address. Answer; "no, you have to send it to the US." So we bundle up all our master disks and send them registered mail to the US. Three weeks later we get them back with a note saying "this offer is only available within the 50 United States"
erm...sorry? What the ****? Not very universal is it....

    where were you looking?
did you check here on the UK page for Apple

it says you have to mail them to

  • What is the Final Cut Studio Universal Crossgrade?

I got an e-mail with an offer to purchase a "Universal Crossgrade" to Final Cut Studio for $49, but I'm not clear about what this is.
I already own FC Studio. Does "Universal" mean that all of the components are now in a single app so there's no more "round tripping" between apps?
Does "Universal" refer to the fact that this is compatible with both Power Mac and Intel based machines?
I'm confused about about what's new in this latest version.

    Mike,
The order form (http://images.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/pdf/Crossgrade.pdf) makes it look like you have to send in all 4 DVDs (Final Cut Studio, Motion 2, DVD Studio Pro and Soundtrack Pro).
This is the part that makes me a little squeamish. I haven't had any problems that require a re-install lately, but IF I DO before my new disks get here, I'm stuck. Also, what happens if I get the new version and there's a bug or something else about it that I don't like? Once again, I'm stuck.
    Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

  • Logic 7.2.0 Universal Crossgrade DVD

Does anyone have the Logic 7.2.0 Universal Crossgrade DVD and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
    I need a copy. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good question. I plan to. but as for today. I have a g4 tower with a processing speed of only 933 MHc. Logic 8 needs to be run on a computer with at least 1.25 G processing speed. I ordered a new processor that I going to install from owc that's has a 1.5 G processor but until that arrives I guess I wanted to have the most updated version possible. But you bring up a good point. Maybe I should just wait to upgrade my processor and just install 8.
    Thanks

  • Universal crossgrade update from FCP HD to FCP Studio on Mac Book Pro

    Hi all,
Just ordered my universal upgrade for my MBP from Apple to go from FCP-HD to FCP Studio. My MBP has FCPHD installed on it. I installed it without being aware that it was not compatable with the intel chip.
Just wondering if there are any problems associated with simpy installing the complete crossgrade FCP Studio without first uninstalling FCPHD.
Or is it suggested to completely uninstall FCPHD before installing the new universal version of FCP studio.
The answer may ship with the software but I was wondering if I should start going through the uninstall process as I hear it is a bit involved.
    Thanks for any help.

When I attempt to install the 5.1 cross-grade on a newly formatted hard drive, that is also set as the boot drive with the latest version of OSX on my dual G5, the 5.1 install goes through the entire process up until I get to the part where it begins actually installing the actual software applications. Then it fails--quits- completely quits installing. And yes, both of my optical disk drives are working. I have another disk drive that contains the last version of Final Cut Studio and when I first tried to install the cross-grade on that drive it wont even get past the screen that says that the software is checking to see if it can be installed on the drive. I was told by someone at Apple Pro Applications support that if 5.1 would not install on a new formatted hard drive that contained nothing but the latest version of OSX that I had bad install disks. It's a matter of getting them replaced. I KEEP GETTING THE RUN AROUND!!! It's like no one at Apple cares. I wait over two hours to get help, but I really am not getting help. When I call Panasonic for help with my AJ-HD27H VariCam Camcorders, or my a Aj-HD1200 decks, they bend over backwards to help me. Or when I have a problem with a Canopus Editing System help is easy and reliable.
Is there anyone who knows from whom I can go for an easy replacement of these instal disks?????

  • FCP Universal Crossgrade - still waiting

I sent mine crossgrade form out 5 days ago, so I'm hoping they will come in soon. I tried to check the status of my crossgrade online but I don't appear to be in their systems yet.
Anyone have a number that I can reach a "person" to ask about the status? Opposed to the automated number on the form that has general information not concerning the Crossgrade.
It's not easy being left in the dark with my FCP cd's out there and my new MacBook Pro coming in next week. I need my disks!
    Thanks,
    -Paul West

Mine took awhile to be updated in their system and I sent the form and disc out via overnight service. I checked the tracking (shipment) information and saw that it had been received, but I was not on the website yet. It took about 3 days for my info to show up on the website, so you have to allow them sometime.
If you sent out your form and disc via standard service (5-7 days), add an additional 3 days for your info to post. Then another week after your status changes to shipped. It took about 2 weeks for me to get my discs from the day I sent the form to the day I received the package.

  • Universal Crossgrade's Been Despatched - any tips before I install?

    Probably a Thrashed-to-Death topic - but new things crop up . . .
Any problems or pitfalls with the Crossgrade before I dive in?
    Can't wait!
I love installing stuff on a Mac - it was always a nightmare on a PC but those days are long gone since I changed to Mac, thank goodness!

    You can't educate pork . . ..

Well, the padded envelope with four DVDs in crumpled white packets arrived yesterday - with a sheet of "instructions" which said something about using the Apple Loops disk I already had . . . But I'd sent all the disks back to Apple!
Anyway, I started the upgrade and the first new disk it asked for was (you guessed it) Apple Loops.
There's no facility to skip, so we went back to the beginning and started the upgrade again.
    This time I was ready!
I de-selected Apple Loops in the Custom Setup section, and off we went again.
Guess what? After doing the FCP Installation disk bit, it asked me for Live Type Disk! . . . No LT disk was available - I'd sent it back to Apple.
Obviously, the guys at Apple have a great sense of humour - but unfortunately, I was the butt of this particular joke, it seems.
OK - we started from the beginning again - but this time I was more careful. I decided to check every item on the Custom Install panel.
To my horror, I noticed there were no bytes associated with Final Cut Pro . . .
Well, there's a thing! I sent the FCP disk back with the rest - so now I only have my system backup to rely on if anything happens to Final Cut Pro.
. . . and Compressor too - no upgrade, and now no installation disk!
OK - I know I've read on the forum that people copy installation disks before they send them off - but I don't recall that being recommended on the FCS Crossgrade page when I paid for it.
I assumed Apple would replace the disks I sent. But I only received FCS, Motion, DVD SP and Soundtrack Pro.
I feel cheated and vulnerable now I have no FCP or Compressor disk (not to mention Live Type and Apple Loops) - and they didn't even return the nice little black box the disks came in originally, so I have to find something suitable to store them in together.
I've installed what I can - and done a full software upgrade.
I'll come back when I've used it for a while.
    But I'm not amused . . .

  • Aperture Universal Binary Update in March (Crossgrade)

    Howdy,
As we all know in the end of March Apple will release the much anticipated Universal Binary Update/Crossgrade to its Pro Applications. For we Aperture users this is a free update/crossgrade. (Yippie!) From then on the ProApps will be Universal Binaries.
All bug fixes will be based on the Universal Binary version. So, that said, when the Universal Binary is released get current and stay compatible.
"Because of Apple's redevelopment of the applications to Universal versions one of the key things is that the old code base has gone away and all of the new code will be fully Universal."
All future Aperture software updates will be based on the Universal Binary version of the application.

    G5, 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

This makes sense. One other question around binaries
that i've not found answered is this.
Will the Universal release mean the current PPC
version will not show any performance degredation ?
OK stop laughing everyone. Its just my thinking of
how Apple releases Universal binaries and does it
mean the PPC code gets changed ? If so are there any
downsides. Perhaps its a question for March !
The question has already been answered, but I just wanted to note that you shouldn't feel any shame in asking that question! I have seen the same thought come up in a number of places, it's a very natural question to ask as with Rosetta around for the Intel chip it's easy to get confused and think there may be a "reverse Rosetta" for the PPC when they do come out with an Intel binary (not the case, no such thing!).
So, do not worry everyone - Universal Binaries are universal in the sense that you get a the real program for both systems, that does not have to run through any kind of emulator or other transformation technology.
One other thing to add to the whole "IFDEF" discussion is that Apple has actually done alot of work like that for developers - if you are doing something that may be different between the Intel and PPC chips, there are a number of Apple libraries that do the right thing for you depending on the chip you are running on. That way your code doesn't actually have to have a lot of IFDEF's in it, you just have what looks like pretty much the same code that compiles to both the PPC and Intel automatically at the same time.

  • This crossgrade is RIDICULOUS!!

Apple said that they would make this Intel transition as painless as possible. Well this crossgrade nonsense completely contradicts that! I can order an upgrade from FCP 1,2,3 online or in a store, but I can't purchase an upgrade from 4 or 5 to the Universal? That is terrible! What are they thinking?
Why not do the upgrade like every other piece of software? Insert 5.1 disk....insert original 4.5 or 5 disk...done. No instead, I have to take the disk I paid for, stick it in the mail, and hope it arrives safely in Indiana. Is this 1975 or 2006? I wouldn't be so bothered if you could bring the disk to a retailer and exchange it, but this is nuts!
Now I have this nice new super-fast intel machine, but I can't run my software for another week or more. Furthermore, there are no detailed instructions on the proper way to do this. Do you instal the old version on the intel first then upgrade with the new disk?
Hey Apple, do you realize that this will probably just cause people to take there chances with a download from a torrent site?

but I can't purchase an upgrade from 4 or 5 to the Universal?<<</div>
Sure you can. The details can be accessed here: http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade
Why not do the upgrade like every other piece of software? Insert 5.1 disk....insert original 4.5 or 5 disk...done.<<</div>
Oh really? Most of the software I've upgraded doesn't require the previous disc at all - just the serial number.
I have to take the disk I paid for, stick it in the mail, and hope it arrives safely<<</div>
Yep. The same thing the other thousands of people who've done the crossgrade have had to do. Mine took exactly 5 business days from the time I dropped my old install disc in the mail.
Now I have this nice new super-fast intel machine, but I can't run my software for another week or more<<</div>
Don't get mad at Apple because you didn't do your research - the process has been well documented since February of this year - maybe you were stuck in 1975 and didn't notice. By the way, how much software did you upgrade in 1975?
Furthermore, there are no detailed instructions on the proper way to do this<<</div>
Wrong. The details are in the "Installing Your Software" booklet that comes with the crossgrade package. The 5.1 installer doesn't need the old FCP install disc ... otherwise why would Apple want you to send it in? It ain't rocket surgery.
Hey Apple, do you realize that this will probably just cause people to take there chances with a download from a torrent site?<<</div>
People that will do that will always be around. They're also usually the ones that cheat on their taxes and spouses, pilfer from their employer and in general have a nonexistent or very weak sense of morality.
I have to say that yours is one of the most pathetic posts I've seen around here in a long, long time. Or in other words; your post is RIDICULOUS!!

  • Crossgrade information - unsure if eligible - UK

    Hi,
We ordered Final Cut Pro 5 upgrade from Final Cut Express through our supplier PC world business. My colleague recently informed me that we can now cross grade to Final Cut Studio 5.1 for £69 - which seems like a really good deal.
However... on crossgrade information site -
    http://www.apple.com/uk/universal/crossgrade/terms/fcs_upgrade.html
The part number is different to the one that we have here...
    M9922Z/A - instead of the listed M9922B/A
Are we still eligible, as I wouldnt want to send off my disk only to end up with nothing...
    Thanks!
    G5 DC 2.3ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5 GB Ram

I would have thought you were fine - did a search and found one international version that clearly states you can crossgrade your version of FCP - see the small text at the bottom of the pdf.
    http://images.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/pdf/FCP-5.pdf
Apple tend to be fairly consistent with their policies so it is looking good!
In any case I would advise that you send the item using something like Royal Mail's Airsure service which offers a track and trace for the DVD's should anything go wrong.
    Best of luck,
    Michael

  • Will FCP Studio CrossGrade work on my non-Intel Macs?

    Hello,
I am having to get the Final Cut Studio Universal Crossgrade for my new Mac Pro 2GHz Intel machine. Will the Crossgrade work on my other machines WITHOUT the new Intel chips (Power Mac G4 733MHz & G4 Powerbook 1.25 Ghz).
    Thanks,
    PM

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the previous statements are only a half truth. I own a Mac Pro and a G-5. I upgraded to Universal on both of them and while the program works on both you can't take a saved file from the Mac Pro to the G-5. You get a "General Error" Message.
Anybody know any more information on this?

  • FCP 5 universal

i have read apples site on universal software. straight to the point, which of the universal upgrades do i need to buy to get my DVD Studio 4, Motion 2 and Final Cut 5 powermac versions to work on my MacBook Pro with Intel processor. will the 199 DVD studio pro universal install work or do i have to buy each universal upgrade for each peace of software. apples 800 number takes too long and this discussion site is quicker. thanks for the help.

    Ted,
The ONE upgrade Patrick speaks of is the Final Cut Studio package - the individual apps (FCP, DVD-SP, SoundTrack Pro, etc) are no longer available separately.
here's the link for information on Apple's crossgrade offer: http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/

  • How does one get the status of the crossgrade order process?

    Hi -
In mid-December after receiving a shiny new Quad Proc Intel based mac pro, I discovered that my PowerMac version of Final Cut Studio was barely functional on this new hardware. Since I bought the hardware to go faster, it seems Ironic that I can't. I then discovered the cross-grade option - which allows me to package up all of my Install DVD's and send them to some address in the MidWest and wait for my new install DVD's. I don't mind paying the nominal charge for the cross-grade, but I do mind being down for 25 days waiting for the new discs. ARGH!... I have still not received the cross-grade discs and am wondering if there is anyone that can make this process go faster - or tell me where I am in the queue. IMHO, the Intel Binaries for the Pro Applications should have been on the Mac Pro, and the license for the old discs should have at least allowed someone to use the software for a month or so. This really is not cool!.
    Sincerely,
    Dan Powers

    - Did you sent them registered mail?
    - Do you have documentation that they arrived at the fulfillment center?
    - If so, the crossgrade web page has links to following up on the status of your order. http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
    - Have you sent them an e-mail following up?
Most folks get their upgrade in 2 weeks or less, so 21 days is moving toward the outside of the envelope. However, if you sent yours in the rush around the end of the original period, you could simply be caught in the mass.
    Best to follow up.
    x
p.s. You did make disk copies of each install disk?
