"Unknown error" when updating an iPhone 4 from 5.1 to 5.1.1 and "This device isn't eligible for the requested build" when restoring

OTA update says there have been an error updating. When I try to update or restore to 6.0b4 (iPhone3,1_6.0_10A5376e_Restore.ipsw) - the device is registered in iOS Provisioning Portal - I still get the same errors. What am I doing wrong?

  • Problem updating to iOS5. Error message: "This device isn't eligible for the requested build."

    Hi
I've been trying to uodate my iPhone to iOS5 since last night. Initially, I kept getting the "Internal Error" messages since I'm assuming that the server was busy. A little later, that changed to the "Server is unavailable" messages. Which is when I gave up trying yesterday.
I've now resumed my efforts since today morning & I've started getting a different message: "The iPhone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build." I have no idea why this is happening. I've updated my iTunes & OSX Lion to the newest versions.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    iPhone 4 (OS 4.3.5 8L1)
    OSX Lion (10.7.2)
    iTunes 10.5 (141)
    Thanks.

OK so problem solved. Turns out that I had used Tiny Umbrella last night to kick the phone out of recovery mode when it got stuck during one of the attempted upgrades. And I forgot to uncheck the "set host to Cydia" option before quitting.
    All done. iOS5 is here!

That error code is normally for phones that have been jailbroken or you are trying to install an iOS that you downloaded from somewhere on the internet besides Apple.

sounds like your phone was jailbroken.  If this is the case, you're hosed.

i'm trying to update to 4.3.4 but its giving me "iphone could not be updated this device isn't eligible for the requested build" . . . i dont know what going on . . anyone ?

    SOLUTION FOR ALL.
This works. Thanks. The best way to do this is through the terminal. Just do the following commands in terminal:
    Type sudo su
    Press enter
Then enter your password and hit enter
    Type vi /etc/hosts
Move your cursor with the down arrow to the line that has gs.apple.com without a # at the beginning of the line.
Move cursor to the beginning of that line.
Type i# then press the esc key.
    Type :wq
    Press enter
    Type exit
    Press enter
Now you can quit out of the terminal application. This likely is a problem caused by Tiny Umbrella denying itunes communicating with the apple servers.

  • Iphone stuck in recovery mode and can't recover because "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

I have an iPhone 4S and it has been stuck in recovery mode for whatever reason. I have tried using data recovery software that can turn my phone to normal mode but when it tries all my phone does in turn off and then on again, back into recovery mode. I can't use iTunes to recover my phone because it won't let me do it without updating and recovering the iPhone. When I do this it gives me the error "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"
Is there any other way I can restore my phone from backup without getting this error?

You can also take a look at this information from this support document: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

    Hello OmPRakash69,
    Thank you for your question!
It sounds like you are trying to update the phone to the latest version of iOS but are getting an errorr message saying the phone is not eligible for the requested build. Try out the troubleshooting in this article named:
Error 3194 or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4451
These steps will get you started, and there are additional troubleshooting steps if needed in the article:
Important: If you see one of these messages and need help updating or restoring your iOS device, Install the latest version of iTunes and try to update or restore again. After that, follow these steps if you need more help.
    Check your "hosts" file
After you've updated iTunes to the latest version, you can check the hosts file to be sure your computer can contact the update server. Use the numbered steps below if you’re on a Mac.
If you’re using a Windows computer, follow steps in this Microsoft support article, noting that resetting the hosts file will affect software services that rely on hosts file redirects. If you're using Windows on a business computer, consult your IT department to be sure applications will still work correctly after resetting the hosts file.
In the Finder, choose Applications > Utilities.
    Open Terminal.
Enter this command and then press Return:
    sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
Enter the password you use to sign in to your computer and press Return. You won't see text appear in the Terminal window when you enter the password. Make sure you use a nonblank administrator password.
Terminal will display the hosts file. Navigate using the arrow keys and look for an entry containing “gs.apple.com”.
Add the # symbol and a space ("# ") to the beginning of the gs.apple.com entry.
Press Control-O to save the file. Then, press Enter when prompted for the filename and Control-X to exit the editor.
    Restart your computer.
Try to update or restore your iOS device again.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling
