Sshd ignores /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny
Hello everyone,
I've just found out that sshd ignores /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny completely on my machine. It doesn't make use of tcp_wrappers. I am using the standard Arch package. Either my settings are wrong, or this is a severe security problem. It was a terrible surprise to find out that my server is under severe dictionary attacks all the time, despite the denyhosts script I am using.
These are my settings:
/etc/hosts.deny:
ALL: ALL
/etc/hosts.allow:
# some nfs daemons: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
sshd sshd1 sshd2: ALL EXCEPT /etc/hosts.evil
mysqld: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
/etc/hosts.evil:
195.113.21.131
60.10.6.53
A simple experiment to verify the settings:
[root@charon etc]# tcpdmatch -d -i /etc/xinetd.conf sshd 195.113.21.131
warning: sshd: no such process name in /etc/xinetd.conf
client: address 195.113.21.131
server: process sshd
matched: hosts.deny line 5
access: denied
[root@charon etc]# tcpdmatch -d -i /etc/xinetd.conf sshd 195.113.21.130
warning: sshd: no such process name in /etc/xinetd.conf
client: address 195.113.21.130
server: process sshd
matched: hosts.allow line 10
access: granted
This seems to be fine. But when I go to the machine 195.113.21.131, I can simply log in with no trouble at all.
This is really strange. Does it have something to do with the xinetd warning? I am not using xinetd... Maybe I'm doing something wrong. If you have experienced such a trouble, please give me a hint.elasticdog wrote:So should our package not have the ListenAddress 0.0.0.0 line uncommented by default? My guess would be that since it listens on all local addresses by default, we're just overwriting that when specifying 0.0.0.0, which isn't valid. That was users don't have to specify their local IP address. Unless I'm wrong, shouldn't this be a bug/feature request for the packager?
This doesn't seem to be a package bug... IMHO, sshd must respect all the settings in hosts.deny and hosts.allow, regardless the IP address it listens on. The behaviour I noticed seems to be much more complicated. Basic settings (daemon name mentioned in hosts.*) worked, as far as I didn't want a "per IP" configuration. For example, including the daemon in hosts.allow really enabled remote connections, but any closer specifications (subdomains, EXCEPT operator...) were ignored. Access was simply granted without further evaluation. Excluding sshd from hosts.allow worked as one would assume. When I specified ListenAddress, everything started to work properly. This is mysterious. There are millions of computers using tcp wrappers and ssh, so it's hard to believe there could be a bug. -
/etc/hosts Private Host Name Fully Qualified Domain Name does it matter?
During installation of 11gR1 on Windows 2003 the examples in the installation guide show adding the Private IP and host name to /etc/hosts
However they only add the short name, racnode1, not Fully qualified Domain Name (FQDN), racnode1.mycompany.com
e.g.
10.0.0.1 racnode1
10.0.0.2 racnode2
Later when installing the Clusterware it then expects to see the FQDN, racnode1.mycompany.com, of course you can modify this and remove the domain name and continue. OR go back and add the FQDN in /etc/hosts
e.g.
10.0.0.1 racnode1 racnode1.mycompany.com
10.0.0.2 racnode2 racnode2.mycompany.com
What is the best practice? Currently my company is just dropping the FQDN from the name during the install, my instinct is instead to add the FQDN to the /etc/host in the first place.
Does anyone have a recommendation or experience with either situation?
Will (using/ or not using) the FQDN cause me issues in the future? If it's a problem, the assistent will tell you :-)
I don't think it's a problem.
Please mind that the first entry will be the name of the ip address, if it's not in DNS and a utility tries to get the name. (that's the reason 127.0.0.1 resolves to localhost.localdomain, it's the first entry in /etc/hosts) -
/etc/hosts vs DNS & sendmail
Hi All,
I have a question about how /etc/hosts & DNS work on a solaris 9 box.
When I have entries in /etc/hosts that are not in DNS and I run say nslookup the utility will not find the ip. Put if I ping the entry in /etc/hosts it will find it. Basically I have a box with default sendmail and in /etc/hosts I have a entry with mailhost added to it at the end. nslookup does not find the box ping does and sendmail can't send mail to it and I can not verify that it ever worked correctly.
1) what is up with nslookup no seeing /etc/hosts?
2) can sendmail send to hosts per FQDN listed in /etc/hosts & use a DNS server at the same time?
thanks
-imWhen I have entries in /etc/hosts that are not in DNS
and I run say nslookup the utility will not find the
ip. Correct. nslookup and /etc/hosts are controlled by /etc/nsswitch.conf.
Files says to search /etc/hosts.
Anything else says to use that name service.
Put if I ping the entry in /etc/hosts it will
find it.If it is in /etc/hosts and /etc/nsswitch.conf says to search /etc/hosts.
and in /etc/hosts I have a entry with mailhost added
to it at the end. nslookup does not find the box ping
does and sendmail can't send mail to it and I can not
verify that it ever worked correctly. Sendmail can be compiled to use or disregard name server lookups in addition to the /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
sendmail -v e-mail_addr, should show you some basic diagnostics.
1) what is up with nslookup no seeing /etc/hosts?That's the way it works.
2) can sendmail send to hosts per FQDN listed in
/etc/hosts & use a DNS server at the same time?sure, see /etc/nsswitch.conf and the sendmail compile time options.

Leopard: /etc/hosts is ALWAYS ignored
Hi all. I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere on the net. Can anyone tell me why, in Leopard, my /etc/hosts file would be completely ignored. It doesn't matter what I put in it, it seems to never be read. I've tried using dnscacheutil to empty the cache and all that. Nothing seems to help. And I can't find anywhere how I can tell Leopard the order in which to try hostname lookups (hosts first, then DNS). Any ideas?
Thanks
--Dancan you post your /etc/hosts file, or a subset (maybe replace IP addresses with nn.nn.nn.nn).
If you use
file /etc/hosts
do you see
/etc/hosts: ASCII English text
or
/etc/hosts: ASCII text, with CR line terminators
or
/etc/hosts: ASCII text, with CRLF line terminators
Have you tried to install and/or run your own DNS server on your Mac? -
In the command line how do I find the etc/host file? is there one?
I am trying to work remotely and use our lotus notes system (which is from a windows based server) but I have to connect to the mail server and our IT person wants to find the equivalent of the Windows host file or host table . is there such a file? we went here
http://linux.die.net/man/5/hosts
hosts(5) - Linux man page
Name
hosts - The static table lookup for host names
Synopsis
/etc/hosts
thanksSince you're using a Macintosh, quit reviewing linux stuff. These, when entered in the Terminal app (inside /Applications/Utilities/) should point you in the right direction:
*cat /etc/hosts*
details in:
*man hosts*
FWIW, you should search the Unix forum (or post your query there) under OS X Technologies. -
/etc/hosts.allow versus iptables/firewall?
What's the relation between the /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files, on the one hand, and a host firewall on the other? If I'm going to configure iptables on a machine, is there any point to having any non-trivial rules in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny too? Or should I just set them to let everything connect and do all my configuration through iptables?
(Well, really, I'm going to use some iptables-for-dummies tool like ufw or firehol.)I cannot agree that hosts.{allow, deny} are 'a lot more basic' They're different from iptables, they work on different level and offer different capabilities, but it would be much harder with iptables to grant/deny access according to:
- ident lookup
- NIS netgroup
- domain name
- consistent ip->name and name->ip mapping
and so on; man 5 hosts_access and man hosts_options contain some examples. On the actions side, in addition to granting or denying access, arbitrary command can be run in parallel or instead of called service, with some useful informations about connection available as %variables.
Tcp_wrappers do not have to be called by protected service itself; they can be used with everything that uses TCP and can be run via (x)inetd, with a little help from tcpd(8).
I prefer iptables myself (no use in letting unwanted traffic pass any further than strictly necessary), but tcp_wrappers make a really nice and useful complementary solution. -

Unable to edit /etc/hosts with permission denied error
[15:45:02][rabbie@sandnigga:~]# sudo cat /etc/hosts
Password:
cat: /etc/hosts: Permission denied
[15:45:09][rabbie@sandnigga:~]#
Basically that's my problem right there. I cant edit / view / change the hosts file on my macbook pro but I can delete it and create a new one. If I do delete it and create a new one, that new file then has the same problem only a few minutes later.
Does anyone have any ideas ?
I have also tried to change the ownership and permissions of the file:
[15:45:09][rabbie@sandnigga:~]# ls -la /etc/hosts
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root wheel 290 18 Sep 20:38 /etc/hosts
No luck.
Thanks in advance for any help.Hey Bob,
The hosts file is often edited and added to by network administrators as well as web developers to force your local computer to resolve DNS for sites whos DNS is not yet publicly available.
I actually found the problem and root cause behind this. I installed BitDefender Antivirus on my MacBook Pro and the uninstall script did not successfully remove all settings / files. There were still some BitDefender files locking processes and files on my Mac and so I just ended up Wiping my drive and re-installing Mountain Lion.
Thanks for your attempt to help anyway. -
Gethostbyname returns h_errno 2, when /etc/hosts has no info on solaris x86
Hello,
I am calling gethostbyname(native_machine_name) in our code, and we do not want this to be dependent on /etc/hosts file. So when we remove all entries from /etc/hosts file, it works well on sparc machine, but the same doesnt work on solaris x86 machine. gethostbyname returns null with errno 2.
Also "ping hostname" doesnt work on solaris x86 when there is no entry in /etc/hosts, but the same works on sparc machine.
Is there any such dependency on x86 machine? If there is any then how to achieve this functionality (to get host info without /etc/hosts)?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Check you have host: files dns in /etc/nsswitch.conf
and working name servers specified in /etc/resolv.conf -
The new entries made in /etc/hosts file is not picked up by Weblogic.

I have come across a scenario where i have changed the IP address of a particular host name (which was already present in etc/hosts) to point to a new IP address.
After i did this change, when i do a telnet test to the same hostname, i can see it is getting connected to the new IP to which i changed. But my service which is deployed on weblogic 10.0 still keeps sending requests to the old IP which i commented in the etc/hosts file instead of the new IP address.
My question is will weblogic cache the data in etc/hosts file somewhere?
Thanks in anticipation..
MadhuApplication deployed on weblogic server will pick the IP address of the server on which the application is deployed .
IP address or listen address for weblogic server can be configured in 3 different ways :
Listen Address : Blank --- This means that the server will listen to all the interfaces available on the Machine .
Listen Address : IP address or Hostname --- The server will listen only to the specified IP address or the hostname .
Listen Address : : localhost --- The server will be listening only on localhost address and will not be accessible remotely .
Please check what it the listen address specified at you end.
Thanks,
Sandeep -

Blocking Ad servers via etc/host file not working
In Snow Leopard I add a list of ad servers and direct them to 127.0.0.1 via the /ect/host file.
I've configured the host file on my mac mini server and it doesn't work.
i just want to block ads when using browsers ON the Mini.
How can I achieve this?Yeah; that's an old-time Windows and Unix hack.
There are ad-blocking extensions for all major web browsers, and those are easier to manage and maintain.
Off the top, I'd have to check the search order to see if I was getting a response from remote DNS or from /etc/hosts here.
If you're running a Mac OS X Server box, you're hopefully also running DNS services, and if you're running DNS services, then that's going to be where this hackery gets implemented. Add bogus zones. And if DNS gets an answer from its cache, I wouldn't tend to expect it to go read /etc/hosts (for performance reasons), for that matter.
There may well be an ad-blocking DNS server around you can forward queries to, too; I haven't looked for that.
If you make changes to your local /etc/hosts setup, try issuing the following to clear the cache:
dnscacheutil -flushcache
I'd recommend installing an ad-blocker. /etc/hosts is an old-school approach and can end up causing weirdnesses on errors, particularly if your box is (also) a DNS server for your LAN. (Also realize that Apple isn't documenting the /etc/hosts file in the Mac OS X Server 10.6 networking manual.) -
/etc/hosts Prank Gone Wrong, need help restoring files to original
Some friends were messing around on my computer and playing a joke on me
using the sudo pico /etc/hosts command they were able to send me from sites I wanted to visit, like facebook, to sites I didnt want to visit..
what they wrote was:
67.55.108.167 facebook.com
67.55.108.167 www.facebook.com
I have since deleted it but the every time I go to facebook from another sight I am still redirected. The odd part is that I can go to facebook, but only after ive been redirected. What I mean is, I try to go to facebook, get redirected, then try to go to facebook right away. If I do that it works fine. Also Safari is the only internet browser that is effected. Opera and Firefox are both un effected. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling safari as well as using the same command as they did, but in reverse. Still no luck. Any suggestion? Unfortunately they didnt back up the /etc/hosts before they edited itYou might also want to flush your DNS cache
dscacheutil -flushcache
Also make that password change.
Look in System Preferences -> Accounts to see if your friends added any new admin accounts or granted an existing account admin access.
If they know how to create ssh-keygen keys, they could have deposited a key in your /private/var/root/.ssh/authorized_keys2 file.
There are any number of additional tricks they could have done, if they had admin access. I'm just scratching the surface.
If you do trust these friends, then most likely they just played with /etc/hosts. If they are the kind of friends that get malicious, I would consider the "nuke and pave" reinstall. -
Is there a similar file to windows\ssytem32\drivers\etc\hosts in OS X
Hi,
I am running a Windows 2003 Server with several websites. I would like to view my websites from my new Imac, however I keep getting prompted for the user name and password for the router.
In windows on my old computer I could edit the file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts with the IP address and URL of the site and it would open. Is there a similar file in the Mac OS X 10.5.7 software.
Many Thanks in anticipation{quote:title=Herr Lazaro wrote: > So if /etc/hosts works reliably I'll probably switch to it}{quote}
Adding host records by editing the /etc/hosts file is not entirely reliably. Since Leopard, some people have reported issues of the added host records "mysteriously" disappearing, or Apache not being able to properly resolve the added hosts. The bigger issue is that the modifications in the /etc/hosts file can create unwanted side effects in the normal functioning of services like the mail server and others.
Since Leopard, there has been an alternate way to add host records using the dscl utility. In fact, by many, it is considered the better, more reliable, and safer method.
You can read this recent article to see how its done:
http://tomafro.net/2009/07/dscl-the-easy-way-to-add-hosts-on-osx
There are a number of additional articles on the web about using dscl for adding host records to OS X.
The choice, of course, is yours. If you are using the /etc/hosts file without issue, then it might be safe to continue doing so. But, if your system starts experiencing domain name resolution issues or problems with services such as the mail server, you should consider switching to and using the dslocal database to manage your host records.
