Unknown person with full privileges in hard disk permissions

I was checking permissions on my startup drive and found 2 additional icon for full read and write permissions. Below is a link to a picture of the Sharing and Permissions box in my Hard Drive.
I tried to delete it, but it would not delete. I cannot change the privileges.
Anyone ever seen this before?

Here is what I get, but I don't have the manual to tell me what it means... but I suppose the root admin can do most every thing, but who are the 1 and 0?
The 0: 6562C52C-2134-11D9-B59A-000A959C7800 looks similar to the address that my home mac uses to communicate to my office one, at least the 7800 is the same at the end.
The 1: 141C87B3-8C18-46C1-B3F3-F7B824FE9491 is unknown to me.

  • Stop the beeps with the 7200 rpm hard disks of the MacBook Pro

    http://www.hardmac.com/news/2009/07/13/stop-the-beeps-with-the-7200-rpm-hard-dis ks-of-the-macbook-pro
Stop the beeps with the 7200 rpm hard disks of the MacBook Pro
from HardMac.com by [email protected] (Lionel)
At the beginning of week, we have spoken about the unpleasant beeps made by the 7200 rpm hard drive proposed as an option in the MacBook Pro 2009.
A solution has been found, the details are given by Rémy.
These tedious beeps occur when the disc is inactive and are caused by a system
to reposition the play-back head carried out in a repetitive way.
In addition to the beeps of the hard drive, Mac OS X displays the pretty multicoloured wheel during some seconds while waiting for hard drive to finish these loadings and unloadings of the play-back head.
The solution comes with a utility of the name hdapm (for Hard Disk Advanced Power Management) which makes it possible to change the level of energy management (APM) of the hard drive.
Hdapm can be downloaded from : http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm; hdapm being a command line utility, it is thus necessary to use the Terminal (which is in /Applications/Utilitaires).
After copying hdapm into your user file, the command to enter is:
    sudo ~/hdapm disk0 max
disk0 corresponds to the disc to regulate knowing that hdapm should function with any ATA disk supporting APM
max is the level of APM which is a number ranging between 1 and 254 included
the word following are preset and can used in the place a number for the level of APM
max (maximum performance) is the parameter to use to eliminate the “beeps”.
    min (maximum economy of energy)
default (returns to the default setting)
The level of APM is a temporary adjustment in the firmware of the hard drive, this adjustment is lost when the disk is powered down and it is thus necessary to redo this at each for each start up.
To install hdapm so it is launched at each start-up, it is necessary to copy hdapm to the hard drive (/usr/local/bin is advised) and to copy the file hdapm.plist in /Library/LaunchDaemons.
It will be can be necessary to you to edit hdapm.plist with the desired parameters; the default settings are: the repertory where hdapm is /usr/local/bin, the hard drive is regulated on the first (disk0) and the level of APM is the maximum.
You can simply copy the file hdapm into /usr/local/bin file if you want to avoid modifying Plist.
Simplest way to reach these files is to use the Go/go to the file and to copy/paste this address before validating.

Yeah, I don't buy that. I spoke with Seagate a couple of months ago when I was looking for the impossible to find 500 GB 7200 RPM HD and asked them that very thing. They told me it would work fine, but I should disable SMS. Apple told me the same thing. I ultimately waited and got a non G-Force model, but Seagate told me it would work.
I also don't believe that they'd OEM the drive to Apple knowing it wouldn't work. That makes absolutely no sense. If Seagate knew the G-Force drive would not function properly in an Apple MacBook/MacBook Pro, and they OEM'd it to Apple for that purpose anyway, what does that say about Seagate?
I admit it's odd that the used the G-Force model given the presence of SMS, but apparently Seagate has prioritized the manufacturing of the G-Force drives and probably offered it to Apple.

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • Can a T60 (with completely zero-ed hard disk) install a hard disk drive from a CD? Or floppy only?

    Hi
Yikes - I am in deep trouble !
Following a virus attack, I have zero-ed my Thinkpad T60's hard disk (using KillDisk), but now when I try to install WindowsXP Pro from a CD, but although it can read the CD and does get so far... it says it cant read the hard disk !
I was hoping to install the correct driver (see below) but now I can't find my floppy disk drive for my T60.
Is it possible for DOS to read off a DVD or a CD?
I have tried to download a file which I am hoping is the correct driver
"Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit), Vista (32-bit) and XP (32-bit) - ThinkPad"
    6iim10ww.exe
    www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70477
But without a floppy drive I dont know how to get it into my T60!
Is it possible to put the data onto a CD or a DVD and read from there?
    Cheers
    Ship

  • Folder with question mark ! hard disk !

I NEED HELP !!! I Replaced my mac hard disk due to a malfunction in the first one but i already formatted it and when i start up, it gives this folder with a question mark ! When i start internet recovery i get this error 6002F !! I NEED HELP ... what is wrong and how do i solve this issue .
ps. the Store did not carry the mac OSX CD's so they told me to internet recover the OS.

The icon means that the Mac can't find suitable startup volume. In other words, it can't find the OS in the drive. Your only hope is connecting the Mac to the Internet and starting it up with Command-R pressed. Hopefully you will be able to do an Internet-based Recovery boot.
If that cannot be made to work, you will have to take it to an Apple Store or a Service Provider so they can install the OS.

  • Trouble with Lacie 1TB external hard disk

Recently got a Lacie 1TB external hard disk.  Need to get as close to 1TB actual capacity as I can.
Used cfdisk to create a single Linux partition, and thought I tried to "maximize" the size.
Used mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 to create the file system.
Tried to mount the disk.   The first go around apparently failed (dmesg said there was no journal).
I repeated all of the above and the second time it mounted, but "df -h" reports:
    /dev/sdb1             925G  200M  878G   1% /mnt/external_1
    What the hell happened?
Can someone please advise on how to fix this, and actually maximize the real available space?  Please include the exact utilities and flags you would recommend.
    thanks much.

    lucke,
i know disks always have less capacity than the nominal size.  but a 1TB disk should have more than 900 MB available.  possibly as much as 980 MB.  that would be commensurate with my past experience using other external drives.  over 200 GB used off the bat is ridiculous, and i've never seen anything like that before.
as a revised question to people out there, which fs would you recommend to get the most out of this disk.  it's going to have 900+ GB of files, each almost exactly 170 MB, and will be processed via the USB2 interface.

  • I am having problems with my 1TB Hitachi hard disk

I recently bought a 1TB hard drive. I formatted is as an Mac OS extended (Journaled). Now when I try to put files into the hard disk, I consistently get the error: The operation can’t be completed because the item “ " is in use.
I have several other hard drives which do not give me any problems.
    Please help!
    maestronacogdoches

this may sound like a lot of work, but can you please take a picture step by step(or screen recoding with quicktime player (comes on a mac) and make a video) of each step from opening the hard drive in finder to draging and droping etc.. you can upload to youtube.   Im confused why you would get that.

  • Dad needs help with laptop out of hard disk space

You Ipod users willh have to excuse me but I need some help. Bought my daughter an 30gb for xmas and one by one we are getting thru the problems. She nows has 1100 songs on it but I had to send her my laptop as it would not talk to her p3. Anyway her hard disk is now full on the laptop. Question is do you have to keep all in library to keep it on the ipod cos she cant get more song on? Can she delete anything from the laptop as I think she is going for the full 7,500 songs on her IPOD Thanks people

Use the instructions in this article to set the iPod to sync manually, and then delete the songs from the iTunes library; they will not automatically be deleted from the iPod.

  • Moving library to a new computer with an external backup hard disk

I have a new computer running Windows 7, going through the fun of moving my itunes library, the old PC DVD drive keeps crashing mid burn, so wondering if the possibility is there to reinstall the library from the Western Digital external backup device I had on the old computer, I sort of think it should be easy to point itunes to that device as the backup device and then reinstall. Is it as simple as that? Has anyone else done this as it is really like moving the files via an ipod as a hard disk?

You can de-authorise your old computer and authorise the new one at any time.
In fact they can both be authorised at the same time if you like.
You are allowed to have 5 computers authorised at any one time.

  • CD Ejects with Error Code 9 - Repair Disk Permissions Greyed Out

    History:
Superdrive 815CA Ejects Blank CD's to be burned w/ Error Code 9
    Exact Text:
The Operation Could not be completed an unexpected error occured(error Code 9)
The CD Ejects, but the Ghost Icon of the CD image would stay
Plays previously burnt CD's/DVD's as well as market CD's/DVD's fine
    Went to Disk Utility
Repair Disk Permissions(RDP) & Verify Disk Permissions(VDP) greyed out so you can'tclick them when I click on first aid
The only time they weren't greyed was when I clicked to repair the Ghost Icon CD, of which the actual CD was ejected in the first place
I cleaned the lens umteen million times - same problem
I did the Hardware repair check w/the startup CD, same problem
I bought a NEW frickin' Superdrive and installed it successfully- same problem
I went to system preferences and selected the option to open the blank CD in I tunes.
This worked for burning MP3's no problem
HOWEVER it will not open in the finder, so I can't save any data from my desktop on to a CD/DVD, so my hard Drive is getting clogged
    Got a Hammer?

I loaded at least 20 different BLANK CD's to experiment with.
The same CD's which get spat out when I open it in finder, burn fine when i open them up in I tunes
I've already bought a new drive and the same problem occurs as when i had the old drive (can't open in finder), so i believe the bad drive and bad CD premise has been troubleshot.
It seems like it won't recognize the Drive or CD when i try to launch a CD from the finder
The blank CD's burn music fine when I open it up in I tunes, but not when I try to open it up in the finder when i try to put data on the CD's.

  • Troubles with 10.6.8, spotlight, disk permissions

I upgraded my trusty 2007 macbook from 10.4.11 to 10.6.8 about a month ago. Upgrade went smoothly and I haven't had any problems in the month since then.
Sometime in the past day or two (noticed it yesterday), Spotlight has begun an eternal indexing project. I doesn't progress beyond "estimated indexing time." It seems to be causing some lag time in my computer's processing.
When I open Finder, the in-window Spotlight feature works just fine.
After reading some forums, I trashed the third-party importers located in HD/Library/Spotlight.
    No change.
I safe booted and didn't see the same Spotlight issue in safe mode.
Restarted as usual, and the same stuck indexing problem is still happening.
I decided to verify disk permissions and a whole list of permissions differ. Ran Repair disk permissions. Ran verify again, and again have a list of permissions differing. Ran repair again, then verify again. Same problem. Repair disk permissions doesn't seem to be addressing the issues that Verify is pulling up, even though it says it is.
There is one line in the log that is different from everything else. It says:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
The bulk of these permission issues look to be Systems/Library/Java and Systems/Library/CoreServices.
Are these problems related? Anyone have some reliable pointers for me?

Your disk permission repair issue is not related to Spotlight issues.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?locale=da_DK
All I can recommend is run ALL of the free OnyX's checks, cleaning and maintainenance features (minus clearing the log files) and reboot. See after some time that it resolves your Spotlight issue (it takes a little while to rebuild it)
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Another solution is to resintall OS X fresh install method.

  • Why can't I get the full amount of hard disk space when I reformat?

I have a 750 GB external Western Digital. I reformatted it using extended journaled setting. When it's all ready to go why do I only get 700 GB available as free space and not the full 750 GB? What is occupying the remaining 50 GB? I guess I could understand a gig or two that I couldn't use, but 50 GB, that's 15% of the disk!!!!
    Thank you

    Gets asked frequently....
    500GB = 465GB too. Or 1000GB = 933GB.
Then, you will find the last inner tracks are drastically slower than the outer 1/3, too. So chop some off for performance.
699GB is 'normal.' The new WD 640GB Caviar = 599GB, great drive and seems slightly faster than the 750GB due to higher density recording.
You can build your own and choose the drive and case that meets your needs, and avoid the vendor 'tax' or WD "features" and go with a Oxford based FW/USB/eSATA cases.

I purchased a new PC and downloaded the latest iTunes but attempts to transfer the iTunes folder with songs from the old hard drive to my new computer failed. Only 20 of approx 300 songs transferred. All other non music file transfers (WORD, EXCEL, etc) from the old hard drive to the new computer were successful. Is this a file type issue? Any thoughts??  THANKS!

    Hi,
My exsisting laptop harddisk (250GB 2.5" 5400RPM Western Digital) is no longer working. Can i replace it with a 2.5" 320 GB 7200RPM Seagate momentus XT harddisk
Is this supported on my laptop and does it require any bios upgrade?

that's a hybrid solid state & platter drive.
    Some machines don't like them.
Other issue is the firmware is not perfect on these yet & some experience stalling issues as exact handling of system files & program files to solid state needs more fine tuning.
This technology is a great way forward but needs more development time really.

I am running iTunes on an IBM compatible system running Windows XP with a relatively small hard disk (70gb). I have 4 kids with 4 IPOD Touches, multiple IPOD Nanos, etc. Their apps and album art are eating up the hard disk space. I changed the Media Folder through Edit, Prferences, Advances, iTunes Media Folder to an external hard disk. The new music downloads and purchases go there but the apps and other items do not. How do I get the apps and other iTunes software and downloads to go to the external hard disk

There is no built in function to make this happen.
    Your options are:
    Upgrade the existing hard drive.
Try creating a link for the app folder on the external drive... this may or may not work.
Realistically, a larger hard drive is a better solution, then use the external drive for keeping a backup of the ENTIRE iTunes folder and any other personal data on the system.
