Unrecognised Ipod

Hi,
Ive been through the threads on the discussion forum and see that quite a few Ipod users are having my problem.
My Ipod is not being recognised by Itunes or appearing in My Computer on my PC. It freezes everthing and unless i unplug it everything crashes.
Between me and my finacee we have 4 Ipods. New 30gb Video Ipod, 4gb Nano, 4gb Mini and 20gb Ipod Click wheel. My PC recognises the Nano straight away and the Mini and old click wheel after about minute or 2 but will not recognise the New 30gb.
I have done the 5r's, uninstalled and re-installed Itunes, QT and Ipod software updates. I even took the Ipod into the Apple store to have it restored again as it wasnt being recognised by the Software updater. And still nothing.
The last thing i have done is to connect to another PC (my laptop) which is running an older version of Itunes and SHAZAM! There it was.....
Does anyone know what i have to do now? I dont really want to have to run it from a different PC. Do you think i should have it sent back to Apple? Is there something i am missing?
You guys are the experts and im hoping you can help,
Thanks
Scott

-I've tried all the USB ports switching them with a usb keyboard and mouse around. All of them work.
-The ipod will not charge even when plugged in.
-I have not had the opportunity to go back to my friends house to try his computer.
As far as options go, I will try my friends place if it works, there must be some issues with my computer, if it doesn't I think the connection in the bottom of the ipod might be damage, although that seems unlikely.

  • Unrecognised Ipod Touch

I just bought my Ipod Touch 4th Generation today, went to a friends place and proceeded to update Itunes and register the product with Apple. All goes good, the computer has no issues with the Ipod, I never synced with his media library and disconnected the device safely and proceeded home later.
I arrive home, update Itunes to the newest version, plug in my usb connecter and plug my ipod in... nothing. I went through the entire support page of apple to good end to try to make my computer find it.
    Things tried so far.
    - exit/load up itunes while device is plugged in.
    - Restart computer while device is plugged in and not plugged in.
    - Stop the "Apple Mobile Device" in the admin tools/services, then start it.
    - Turn off the ipod while plugged in, then start it up.
    - Turn off the ipod, then plug in, then start it up.
    - Check the Universal Serial Bus Controllers in the Device Manager for either the apple usb device or mass storage device (Which has none). Attempt to update the hardware which finds everything up to date.
    - Use different Ipod usb connecter.
    - Use different computer in Windows Vista (My computer is Windows 7 -64bit)
    - Plug Ipod in in Recovery mode.
    - Get latest computer drivers.
I think I did minor variations of some of those ideas listed. So far no Luck. Any Ideas?

I've installed iTunes 10.2.1 but my computer doesn't recognise the hardware certificate and denies it, and the installation isn't complete. This results in my iPod being unrecognised and so, it cant synchronize with iTunes. Please help me! My system is a Windows XP.

Malware can cause digital signing issues, I would run a malware check with the free version of MalwareBytes:
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/
After that, the is a Microsoft fixit for:
The software you are installing  has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows   XP. (Tell me why this testing is important.)
This software will not be  installed. Contact your system administrator.

  • IPod nano appears as USB drive, but unrecognised by iTunes for Windows

I have a video iPod, and my daughter has a iPod nano. Yesterday, when I tried to load new songs on the nano, iTunes failed to recognize it. I tried the 5 R's -- I am able to update the nano using the iPod updater, and I tried updating, as well as restoring. the iPod updater is able to see the nano and I was able to restore. So now I have a nano that I am able to navigate the menus of, but thee is no music on it of course.
The nano is not recognized by a second computer as well. The video iPod is recognized by both computers, so I suspect the problem is with the nano.
We use the same user account for both devices, and it has worked without a flaw for the past 2 months.
    Does any one have suggestions?
    Kumar.
Pentium 4, 2 GHz, 512 MB Windows XP

    Problem solved
The fact that the Nano did not work on both computers was a coincidence.
Apple uses a special driver for the iPod disk (I suppose there is a packet filter or some special function in their driver that must sit between iTunes and the standard flash drive driver).
I updated the Nano again, and deleted as many of the hidden USB drivers as possible from the device manager. Then I connected the Nano to a new USB port and that did the trick.
I have not tried attaching the Nano to the old USB port yet.
Windows is terrible at managing drivers -- there is no systematic way of figuring out associations between drivers and software components. Perhaps someone from Apple could post a detailed method paper on how to identify and get rid of drivers installed when you use iTunes and the iPod, so that Windows can pick it up again.
When I connected my video iPod yesterday, it prompted me to update it, but I am the wiser now. I am going to avoid updating iTunes or the iPod software as far as possible.

  • Ipod problems - unrecognisable

    Hi all,
a few problems with my 60gb ipod photo.
Whilst I was away My ipod frooze up and when I restarted it I got the unhappy ipod icon.
no problem I though, when I get home ill just have to restore it using the ipo restorer downloaded from this website.
well I got back and plugged my ipod into the pc. the apple logo came up then I got the monocrome non animated battery icon. I checked to see what it meant and it said the battery was too low and I should leave it plugged in until it has charged enough to work with. so I left the ipod for about 20 mins and eventually the non animated battery icon disapeared and instead I got the unhappy ipod icon. within about 10 seconds the ipod turned off (whilst still connected to the pc) and when I turn it back on I get the non animated battery icon again and that process just repeats over and over.
All the time its connected to my pc my pc doesnt recognise it so I cant perform a restore to get rid of the unhappy ipod icon.
If I plug my ipod into the wall all I get is the unhappy ipod icon and it wont charge!
does anyone have a suggestions or do I need to send this off the apple to fix?
    Thanks Rick

The Sad iPods icon, clicking sound or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
There are also some cases being reported that some unrecognized iPod being able to be erased with Linux, then reconnect the iPod with the original computer and do a Restore there.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
    10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
    11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • Usb unrecognisable message now appears when i plug my old ipod into the usb port on my v70. It used to work so i assume this is a problem caused by updating to the latest software. Has anyone been successful in downgrading to an earlier os using itunes

I now get an urecognisable usb device message when i plug my ipod classic (ipod colour?) into the usb input in my Volvo V70. The ipod used to work, but since updating the IOs it doesn't. Can anyone tell me where i can find a copy of an old ipsw which does work so that i can downgrade back and acheive compatibility again,
    thanks chris jones

perhaps someone from apple tech might contribute as the software upgrade has rendered the device useless for my purposes

  • Ipod appearing as 'E' drive, and unrecognised in iTunes

A couple of days ago I put my iPod onto charge and it threw up a message saying it was corrupted and to run the Chkdsk utility, which I did and and then restored the factory settings as I wanted to completely remove the music and start afresh. Since then, the ipod hasn't been showing up in iTunes at all. I've tried the 5 Rs to no avail, and tried altering it from the E drive to the G drive which has had no affect. I've also checked that the USB ports are fully powered up and they are. When I connect my iPod to my laptop, it recognises it as hardware and opens up an E drive folder, before apparantly disconnecting. Throughout all of this, the screen of the iPod flashes "do not disconnect". As it's currently the same price to buy a new iPod as it is to get it serviced, I will get a new one if I have to as I use mine all the time but I wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom? Many thanks!

  • Running latest update renders ipod unrecognisable in XP

Iopd was working fine with speakers but not available in itunes (although it was recognised by windows XP). I did all the suggested tweaks from the web eg. toggling, reseting, then installed latest itunes and updater. I ran the updater but then the ipod got the dreaded folder with exclamation mark. Now updater only has option to restore! and the ipod won't even work just as music player. I've updated it out of existence. But my suspician is that the files might still be there. Any ideas on this?

7 GB is on the low side, you really should have minimum 15GB.
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Plug in an iPod to update... I would, if I could!

It cannot be coincidence that at the point I was installing updater 2006-03-23 my iPod became unrecognisable by my PC. I first got the “I can’t mount iPod” and now get “Plug in an iPod to update”!
It was working fine and now it’s not. There seems to be a lot of it about. I have tried everything and nothing works. Does anybody know if it’s an Apple software problem or can anyone help with new ideas?

Can't mount iPod typically means that some software on your PC is interfering with your iPod and not allowing the iPod Updater or iTunes to update it. The troubleshooting steps in the following article usually resolve the issue.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
However, it sounds like your iPod currently is not registered at all. First, try resetting the iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
If that doesn't help, try restarting your computer. If that doesn't work, connect your iPod and see if it is recognized in My Computer as a removable disk. If it is, you can format it in Windows to resolve the issue.
    1. Right click on the removable disk
    2. Click format
    3. Click Quick format
    4. Click start
    5. Wait for confirmation that your disk has been successfully formatted. Once you receive this, and you close the formatting dialog box, iTunes should open up within the next 2 minutes or so, and offer you the iPod setup assistant, so you can go ahead and rename your iPod, and set your update preferences, and then your iPod should be good to go.
P.S. What type of iPod do you have? I've been hearing rumors that the iPod nano has some kind of problem with the new iPod Updater. If you can't get the issue sorted out, and you do have an iPod nano, you might want to actually give Apple a call and see if there's any information they can give you.

  • IPod nano no longer recognized USB device - after almost 2 perfect years

Okay, so I ran about 5 miles last night using my nike+ipod. The ipod worked flawlessly as usual. When I went to plug it in to my computer, instead of acting normal I got "unrecognized USB device" or something similar. iTunes didn't recognize it either. It was charging however. The ipod still plays music, but without being recognized I won't be able to get any music changed on it.
I already tried a couple of things. I rebooted the computer. I plugged it in to another computer (with same results). I switched the hold switch and then held down the top two buttons for 6 seconds, etc. It turns off and back on fine. It plays music fine. The computer seems to know it's there b/c it charges and respondes "USB device not recognized". It just doesn't recognize it anymore.
Please help! Did I sweat too much on it?

I got my ipod in May for my birthday and its worked pretty fine up until now. I went on holiday for two weeks to France where I went running everyday with my ipod and it worked fine but on the journey home in the car it wouldnt work and froze. Now it wont charge and is unrecognised on my pc and says that there are no drivers installed for this Device when it before worked fine. I have tried everything that has been mentioned on every discussion I could find and it still isn't working. It's driving me crazy! Could any1 help please? All suggestions appreciated.
Out of curiousity could it be a faulty wire?

  • Ipod 5 not recognised by windows or Itunes, no drivers found in devmgmt.msc

    Hello there.
My Ipod 5th Gen is having problems. When I try to connect it to my windows 8 laptop I get nothing. Not even an "unrecognised device" message. I am guessing there is no driver to process it, or something like that. All my other USB devices are working.
I have tried all the ideas listed on the support. when I take a screenshot and try to find it as a camera, nothing appears. There is no "portable devices" section, no "other devices" section. It is completely unresponsive.
I have no conflicting software, and everything has been reinstalled, including AMDS.
Here is a screenshot of my Devmgmt.msc:

My ipod mini was installed on my windows XP and tunes bought/downloaded from itunes. Six months later and computer has stopped recognising ipod. Message says to "reset" or "restore" and only the restore option (with subsequent loss of songs) can be activated.

Posible cause of problem: ipod was connected to a Mac to download songs from a friend's itunes (no songs bought).

I have now removed and re-installed every piece of Apple Software on my laptop. I assume this would result in the drivers being re-installed.
However, when I plug the iPOD in a message comes up 'Installing Device Drivers'. Then a message comes up that they are installed successfully, but it does also say 'Searching folders for preconfigured drivers...'. After 10 mins I assumed this did not mean anything and closed the window.

  • IPOD Touch has stopped being recognised on my computer

My iPOD Touch has linked to my iTunes sucessfully for a year or two until last week when it stopped being recognised. It is recognised when I plug it into my daughter's computer, and when I did this the iPOD software successfully updated.
