Unrepairable Disc after 10.4.8 update

After using software update to install the current combined 10.4.8, I am now unable to start my mac due to a kernal panic that happens at startup.
I used disc utilitis to check and repair my disc, I find that the illigeal name, unable to repair 1 volume and error at end, will not allow me to fix my concern. I used techtool to fix those concerns I ran across the same situation, unable to repair.
Because I have other hard drives in my computer I am now reinstalling tiger 10.4 on another hard drive to gain access back into my mac.
What the crud happened with this update?
how can I restore everything back to what I had?
Do I need to buy a new hard drive?
G4 Duel 1.25   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
G4 Duel 1.25   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Follow up,
After installing 10.4 to another hard drive, I updated to current 10.4.8 to the new drive. I noticed I was able to access everything on the orginal drive from the finder menu but I also found the apps wood to crash when in use for a few min.
After banging my head against the desk and kicking stones in the backyard, I thought if I could access the orginal hard drive I could update it again.
I followed the steps to download the software update then install it. I restart the mac and fix any messed up prefs with disc ultility.
I can now use the orginal drive again. whoo hoo!!
Reading all of the related posts I thought I would also have to replace a hard drive, just to find out that there is a work around.
good luck to everyone that needs to work on the same project.

have reformatted my Imac using original discs (installed leopard (10.5)) tried to do the software update but it cant download the itunes update and when it gets to the configure update screen after restart for main update, it just gets stuck. HELP!
The configure bar gets about an 1/8 full and then just does nothing. I think its lists the update as combo update? cant remember with out checking.
I have tried to do the disk verify and repair but this has made no difference.
Please let me know what i need to do, I have reformatted the mac just to start over as was clogged with a lot of useless data, I had installed lion (10.7) from the app store previously and now cant seem to find a way to re install lion. I hope I dont need to pay for it again?

If you erased your hard drive, you'll need to reinstll OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to access the App store. You won't have to pay for OS X 10.7 Lion again. Did you try booting to the recovery partition by holding the command and r keys down? If that's still there, you can reinstall OS X 10.7 from there.
If you're looking to install the current iTunes, you need OS X 10.6.8 at a minimum.
If you're still trying to update OS X 10.5 Leopard, you can download the combo update from here.  Download, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, apply the update, then repair permissions again. That will take you to OS X 10.5.8.

I'm having this issue as well only with a little different twist I guess. I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.

  • IMac unable to restart after downloading latest software update (including iTunes 11.2)

My system is a mid-2007 iMac (Intel) with latest software updates always promptly installed (OSX Mavericks, etc) and 320 GB internal HD, 4GB Ram.
Today the software updater informed me that an update to iTunes was available and so I allowed it to download the update and then restart the computer. The restart was not successful - the computer display will show the status window progressing as the update is installed and then nears completion, but will freeze at the apparant point of completion and the restart will not complete. I tried restarting several times and it always hangs up and does not complete.
I then ran the Disc Utilities program - first time I ran it, it identified disc problems with the internal HD  and proceeded to repair them. Following that I trried to restartt and it ran into the same difficulties and did not restart. Subsequently I ran disc utilities and it reports the internal HD to be fine. I've also tried several times to boot the computer and restore from my Time Machine backups and it will not complete the restore. I do get to the screens where I can select the volume to restore from, the volume to restore to, and so forth. After these efforts were not successful, I finally tried to re-download OSX and do a clean system restore, it progressed nearly to completion and then aborted the system installation without completing.
Since having this problem I've therefore been unable to use the computer in Mac mode. I had just about concluded that my hard disc must be replaced, when I decided to see if I could restart running Windows (bootcamp), and I was able to do that successfully. The hard disc is therefore not damaged, or at least the partition of the hard disc used by Windows is not damaged.
Is my most likely option to replace the hard disc or is there something I can still do, in order to see if the hard disc can be restored using a saved backup, before I replace it?
I have the further complication of finding that the Apple store will not replace the hard disc for my computer because it is over 5 years old. I can probably locate a shop such as Best Buy locally who can do that, or I can simply purchase an external hard disc and use that as my primary hard disc until I either replace the internal hard disc or simply replace the computer. Since it is a 7 year old iMac, it would not be surprising to have to replace the hard disc after this length of time. I also see that there are instructions available online to explain how to replace the internal hard disc myself, but I'm unsure at this point whether or not I want to do it myself.

Lacking any responses to my initial post above, I will briefly update how I resolved this issue today.
Installed new external hard disc, 1 TB WD My Passport for Mac, and straightforward setup involving first installing current OS X operating system, then system migrator utility to rebuild the same setup as saved in latest Time Machine backup. The whole process was somewhat time consuming due to my internet connection speed and USB data transfer speeds but it went without any issues. The computer now boots up and operates identical in all respects to how it did before the problem occurred.
Regarding the internal HD of my iMac, if I now run Disc Utility to verify the disc, it reports "appears to be OK". However, viewing the disc usage in "About This Mac" window, it displays as entirely empty. Opening it in the finder also shows only a "Apple Hot News.mbox" file and a single .jpeg image, and .nothing else.
Interestingly, the Bootcamp partition of my iMac's internal HD continues to work fine and appears unaffected by the problem. I use bootcamp rarely but still will plan to set up a replacement bootcamp volume on the new hard disc soon, in order to take its place.
That the problem surfaced coincident with the software update may have been nothing more than bad luck? At this point I have no reason to suspect that the softward update had anything to do with the difficulties.

  • My G5's hard drive died after doing a software update while iPhone was connected.

My G5's hard drive was corrupted and unbootable after doing a software update while my iPhone 4 was connected. Coincidence or related?
Attempts at rebooting produced the file folder icon with flashing question mark. It's been a LONG time since I last saw that.
Disk Utility/First Aid reported that drive had "invalid node structure." The disk could not be repaired because it "could not be unmounted."
Is the failure possibly related to the iPhone being connected at the time of the software update and restart?

Possible the iPhone had something to do with it, but I like to make sure the Disk Directory & Permissions are good before any update.
Was that Repair/Verify done when booted from the Install Disc?
You must repair the HD,  if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it then...
Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

  • USB Hard Drive Disappears after 10.6.3 update

My Samsung S2 640 GB USB portable hard drive is missing from Desktop, Finder and Disk Utility-- but visible in System Profiler after 10.6.3 update. It was fine before the update.
Plugged directly into rear of iMac, I changed cables and slots-- no joy. Even tried a double USB cable as there is no external power supply.
Four other USB HDs work just fine in all slots om the iMac , and this Samsung S2 works fine in my MacBook SL 10.6.3
I bought an identical Samsung S2 and it had the same problems-- so it's not the drive.
    Suggestions?

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.

  • Looping Restart in Early Intel iMac after recent 10.5 update

My friend's iMac is stuck in a restart loop after downloading the latest update for her 10.5 system. She hadn't installed an update for about 4 months so I am not sure what update would have caused the loop. Her computer was working fine before the update so I am picking it is a software issue.
Having searched the forums I haven't come up with people experiencing a similar problem.
    _*What is happening:*_
Hit the startup button, it hangs in the white Apple logo screen with the spinning icon for five to ten minutes ... then it automatically restarts itself returning to the same loop over and over again.
    _*What I have done:*_
    1. Tried a PRAM reset ... no change
    2. Tried an Install Disc restart with the 'C' key ... it starts alright but then says this is the wrong disc for the computer. I can't find my Leopard install disc. I will have a better look for it soon.
    3. Tried connecting it as a target drive ... I just get a blank white screen
    _*A further problem:*_
I was going to reset her computer off her Time-machine backup but when I checked it out it would not allow me into it saying I did not have permissions ... which means any reinstall of the system will not be able to access her time-machine.
Any ideas of what I should try? I will try to find my Leopard install disc and do the reboot off it. I think that is my best bet at the moment.

  • After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file.

After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file. HELP!!!

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • DVD export broken after 10.0.1 update

A project which I have previously exported to DVD in Final Cut Pro 10.0 can no longer be exported after 10.0.1 update.
The symptom is that, athough it plays back fine in the Viewer, after doing Share -> DVD, the burned DVD ends up with these choppy sections where it loops the same 0.3 seconds or so over and over. This occurs after about 4 minutes of playback (it is an 8 minute video).
I've burned multiple DVDs, and deleted the projects render files and re-rendered, and tried multiple DVD players, all to no avail.
This is my first attempt to burn a DVD since applying the update from App Store, which is why I surmise the update may be involved.
Visually it looks a lot like a disc with a bad scratch where it gets in a loop. But as far as I can tell, Final Cut Pro is actually burning the DVD fine, and it is actually writing the same 0.3 second of video over and over. That is, if I put it into a DVD player, I can fast forward from 03:00 to 07:00, and it is still looping the same snippet of video.
Has anybody seen this problem? Any advice for how to fix. Thanks.

This may or may not be related, but its worth mentioning as it relates to what may be a change in the update. I did a test export "Share" > "DVD..." on a project. It worked very well. DVD played just fine on a few devices.
Same project after the update and it fails to share a DVD now. It opens the Share Monitor app and after a few seconds FCPX shows me this:
First, lets take a moment to appreciate the inherent humor in FCPX telling me I've failed. Funny. Moving on...
    Restarted FCPX - no change.
Deleted "Shared Items" folder, in my FCP Project folder - no change.
    Restarted Lion - no change.
Realization iLife in Lion no longer comes with iDVD - not happy.
    Any advice?

  • HELP... after 10.4.11 update I can't boot past the blue screen

HELP... after 10.4.11 update I can't boot past the blue screen, and it is pretty frustrating, to say the least. Here's what happened last night:
I installed elgato's eyetv 250, and at the end it asked to update the software. I did so, and when I tried to run it again it said I had to be running 10.4.11. I quickly went over and downloaded the 10.4.11 combo updater to my desktop and proceeded to repair permissions on my disk so I could run the updater.
I repaired permissions and started the updater. It got halfway through updating and said something like it could not finish and stopped. No reason why - it just stopped. I tried it again, and it did the same thing after going about 25 to 30 percent through the updating process. I thought that was very odd, so I checked, and I was running 10.4.9.
I thought I needed to get the 10.4.10 update, so I downloaded the combo updater several times. It would not run, giving me some error message that it would not even open, so I thought I needed to restart my computer to get it to run. I did so.
That's when my computer would not boot. It gets through the initial white screen with the logo in the middle and the revolving circle, and while it stays there for a long time the fans run increasingly faster. They tame down, and then the blue screen with "Mac OS" on it and the blue progress bar comes up. There is no blue progress bar, though... that's where it stops and will not go any further.
Can ANYBODY help me get this thing booted back up? It was so late last night that before I started I didn't back the Mac up, and of course I have a project on there that I need to finish Saturday afternoon for a company.
ANY HELP WILL BE SO GLADLY APPRECIATED. If you can give me step by step instructions on what to do, you will surely be blessed! Thanks for any help,
    Barry

Hi mrstang, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It sounds like Disk Directory problems.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

  • Trouble connecting to Airport after installing latest security update

Hi, I have just spent an hour with a level 2 SBC DSL tech and they could not resolve my problem. The problem is this: After installing the latest security update released on March 13 for OS 10.3.9, I can no longer securely connect to my airport. It may have something to do with the keychain because this has happened several times before, most recently after the previous security update about 2 weeks ago. Usually after much playing around, I get a window asking for permission for my new network settings to access the keychain. Once I say yes, all works fine. This time, I am not getting that prompt. Even though I have a full signal showing I am connected to the base, it will not pick up and IP address. Finally, the SBC tech had me disable the wireless key on the desktop pc that is the primary computer on the system and immediately my connections works. If I enable the wireless security key, I lose the connection. As I am completely open to hackers with the wireless security disabled, this is a big problem. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can anybody help me?! Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi, my first post here!
I too experienced this problem this evening, after applying the latest security update to Panther. I had verified that the wireless base station was working correctly and that it's WEP key hadn't become corrupted. There were no error messages after re-starting the Mac, just no IP number via airport.
The keychain utility would hang if any attempt was made to alter the password for WEP, and the airport utility hung too. I used Disc Utility to verify permissions, which found dozens of errors - haven't done any maintenance for months - and fixed them.
On re-starting, Airport was 'OFF' so turned it on, was asked to allow access to keychain, and all is working again.
Thank you to those of you who posted the suggestion about permissions, you certainly saved my evening!

  • Ps4 Not reading discs after waking up from rest mode

I'm having a really weird issue with my PS4, it seemed to have started after the 2.50 update.
It's happened about twice and is starting to make me think something might be wrong with my disc drive, which I certainly hope isn't the case since it had no issues before.
The issue is pretty much described in the subject. Rarely, but enough to be an annoyance, when I start my ps4 from rest mode and change discs, the disc won't read. I've sat waiting a while and nothing happens.
I try cleaning the disc and all that but it doesn't fix the problem, the only way to fix it is to turn off or reset the console.
Any ideas? Hoping its a software issue, as like I said, it only started AFTER the 2.50 update. It's done it on 2.51 already. EDIT: I've seem to be able to replicate it, when the console is in rest mode and I swipe on the disc button and it starts up, it doesn't read the disc, but after waiting a couple of mins it seems to be reading the disc.

This problem started after the 2.51 update for me. It will read old discs but not the two new ones I've bought ( and replaced after ps told me it was the discs). The only thing that fixes it ( and only temporarily ) is to go into safe mode and reinstall the update. After that it reads the disc but only for a bit, eventually it just stops running and tells you to check the disc. As I said these are brand new discs. The last thing I was told to try by PS was to go online and load system software on to a jump drive and try to reinstall whole system. Unfortunately I will first have to download all profiles games onto jump drives, unless you pay for PSplus. NIf anyone out there no of a better way to do this, or if there is a way to go back to the system before the 2.51 update, please let me know?

  • Satellite 100-192: Issues after the latest MS update...

    Satellite 100-192.
After the latest MS update I first had the problem with the Realtek sound card driver. I solved it by applying the patch MS provided.
Now the problem is that the disc cleanup utility does not launch. Anybody any idea?

I just found out that my disc cleanup utility would not work because of a free program called Photo Toolkit. Although it is a nice little program to quickly edit photos, apparently it causes such problems when it is loaded.

  • MBP very hot after firmware 1.5 update

    Hi.
Anybody else had this issue ?
I think it started after i updated the firmware on my MBP 2.4Ghz to v1.5
Now idle temp is around 62c all the time and the fans starts to run very fast
    only with little activity.
I did check if anything was running the CPU 100% "Activity manager"
Nothing. CPU 3% with 5 apps running. And i also ran the Diagnostic disc (AHT)
Before the 1.5 update i never heard the fans really but now they starts
a lot more often and that means the heat went up (Ofcause)
Anything to do ? I want it back to the old behavior much more quiet and nice.
Not to speak about in the long run. It will last longer that way i´m sure.
Would love to hear if anybody have some ideas.

Crazy. All this started after a stupid firmware update. I mean. How stupid is that.
My MBP 2.4Ghz was clean silence and not this hot. Its from Feb 2008.
After the 1.5 firmware it got hotter for sure.
Mine is lifted 10cm over the table and still very hot idle.
    CPU temp 62c
    CPU core 1 & 2 is 63c-64c
And this is only idle ! before it was a lot cooler.
I remember i never heard the fans and thats why i found out something was wrong.
Now i hear the fans with only small things like browsing with safari and burn a DVD.

My model should be between 45c - 52c that would be more normal for my 2.4ghz model.
Could i go to Apple and get a new computer with this issue ? would that be enough ?
