I was wondering if anyone can provide their pros and cons of upgrading to SL. I'm interested in what you have to say good or bad. I ordered it and am debating the install or not.

Actually, you should do regular backups as a matter of course. When your internal HD fails (and they all do, sooner or later), or something else awful happens, you could lose everything. Time Machine is excellent for this, other folks use other apps. CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper! seem to be the most popular.

Quicktime Update/Now or Later?

At this point, I don't (nor have I ever) known what Quick Time is about or what it does for me. I'm sure it's important somehow and I will start spending some time learning about it. But right now, I'm wondering about the update. I plan on waiting for awhile before updating my iTunes (I have 7.7.1) as I'm not having any problems. I also don't have a new iPod or an iPhone, nor do I plan to. My current version of Quicktime is 7.5. Is there any reason/need for me to update this now, aside from the things mentioned above?

This sorted it for me:
Backup your iPhone to iCloud (I believe backing up to iTunes will work too). Now go to "Settings --> General --> Reset --> Erase All Content and Settings" to completely restore your iPhone to factory settings. Assuming you've backed up to iCloud, you'll be asked when setting up your iPhone if you want to restore from an iCloud backup. Choose that option and once your iPhone has restored itself from your backup, this annoying problem will finally be gone! (was for me anyway).
To restore from an iTunes backup, connect your iPhone to your computer, load iTunes. Click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up.

FOR UPDATE NOWAIT issue

I have a select statement that is wrapped in the FOR UPDATE NOWAIT clause. This is embedded in a stored procedure and this stored procedure may be called concurrently by multiple threads from a .net application.
Off late i have noticed that the proc has been returning the same value to 2 different calls - this defeats the purpose of row-level locking that FOR UPDATE NOWAIT does. I did notice that the procedure calls from the .net application where 100th of a millisecond apart.
Is there any workaround to avoid the same row being returned to different calls? or is this a known behaviour and i just have to live with it?

This is part of the SP that performs the lock, updates the queue table so that record is marked as In Process so it is not returned to another process when it is already In Process.
Thought it may sound far fetched, my theory is that even before session 1 completes the SELECT statement, session 2 comes in and run the select statement. Since session 1 has not completed and has not locked the row yet - oracle returns the same row to both.
Is this a possible scenario?

Select or Select....for update nowait (data write concurrency issue)

Hello everyone,
I am working on a jsp/servlet project now, and got questions about which is the better way to deal with concurrent writing issues.
The whole senario is described as following:
First each user is viewing his own list of several records, and each record has a hyperlink through which user can modify it. After user clicks that link, there will be a popup window pre-populated with the values of that record, then user can do the modifications. After he is done, he can either click "Save " to save the change or "Cancel" to cancel it.
Method1---This is the method I am using right now.
I did not do any special synchronization measures, so if user 1 and user2 click the link of same record, they will modify the record
at the same time, then whose updates will take effect depends on who submits the request later. If user1 submitted first, then user 2, user1
will not see his updates. I know with this method, we will have the problem of "Lost Updates", but this is the simplest and efficient way to handle this issue.
Method2--This is the method I am hesitating.
I am considering to use "Select....for update nowait " to lock a record when user1 has selected one record and intended to modify it. If user2 wanted to modify the same record, he is not allowed. ( by catching the sql exception.)But the issue I am concerned about is because the "select .. For update" action and "Update action" are not so consecutive as many transaction examples described. There could be a
big interval between " select " and "update" actions. You could not predict user's behavior, maybe after he open the popup window, it took him a while to make up his decision, or even worse, he was interrupted by other things and went away for the whole morning?.Then the lock is just held until he releases it.
And another issue is if he clicks "cancel" to cancel his work, if I use method1, I don't need to interact with server-side at all, but if user method2, I still need to interact with the server to release the lock.
Can someone give me some advice ? What do you do to deal with similar situation? If I did not make clear of the question, please let me know.

Congratulation, you have found a way to overcome your programming business logic.
Have you ever consider that the solution of using CachedRowset concept yet to be included in j2se 1.5 tiger next year too prove workable under the scenario , whereby you can disconnect from the database after you have execute your query and reconnect again if you have to do transactional activity later, so that the loading overhead as well as the data pooling activity could be well balanced off.
Although rowset is still not an official API now, but its potential to me is worth consideration.
I have written a simple but crude cut JSP programme posted on this forum under the heading "Interesting CachedRowset JSP code to share " to demonstrate the concept of CachedRowset and hoping that the Java guru or the developer could provide feedback on how to imporve on the programming logic or methodology.

Buy now or later?

Okay the thing is, I'm thinking of buying a MacBook. Problem is, I don't know whether to buy it now or later becuase of a) it's only 3 months till leopard arrives and b) i'm hearing rumours of a design/speed/whatever change for the macbook product line... any ideas? Do I wait or do I buy? lol

I apologize in advance for the flippant answer and if I have an attitude. This question comes up all the time and personally, it gets annoying. The basic answer is this - if you need a laptop now, get it now, if you can wait, then wait. However, here is why I have a problem with this question. How long do you wait? The MacBooks were just updated. We know Leopard will be coming out sometime in October. We know the MacBooks will fully support Leopard (based on past practice and the fact Apple is not stupid enough to release a major OS that would not work on its machines). If you wait and wait for the latest and greatest thing, guess what, you will always wait because as soon as a new MacBook comes out, well guess what, in about another 6 months an newer one will come out and now yours will no longer be the fastest out there. I bought mine a month ago and love it. And a year from now it will still be as fast as it is now. We can not make decisions for you. This board is designed to help people having problems, not to make personal buying decisions. Ultimately, you have to make those your self. Sorry for the rant, I just get tired of these questions. Good luck with your decision.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

ATV 6 Update | Rent & Watch Later - No Download Available

With the latest ATV 6.0 update, there are now the options to:
- Rent & Watch Now
- Rent & Watch Later
If you "rent & watch later" - the user is directed to go into settings -> "download" to retrieve the rental.
#1 - There is no such area in settings that's currently labeled as "download"
#2 - Going back to the rental won't even give you the option to re-purchase the movie -- so it's just gone
#3 - Under "settings" -> iTunes Store - there's an option for "retrive rentals" that just "sits and spins"

Yup! Same thing happened to me. Doesn't matter if you select watch now or later. Its like the rentals have vanished.

Sick of all these issues- need GOOD update NOW!

okay. since the 4.06 update, my phone has constant low storage space (which we all now by now IS NOT the case) and today, we've gotten a new message to add: "please make at least 512 kb free space to recieve messages"....
please don't ask if i have enough space- i have an sd card with plenty of room, and there is plenty of internal phone space as well phone memory space. not trying to be rude, just we all know that this issue is a continous problem on this phone.
i tried the trick someone mentioned where we set the date of our phone ahead one month- and then it wants to update to the 4.08 update.
i did that multiple times- it appears to download 4.08, but NEVER gets through the actual "restart & reboot" process. no matter what. resetting the phone. taking battery in & out. removing sd card. nothing will get this phone to actually INSTALL the updated software.
this phone is slower than molasses. it errors constantly. closes down apps all the time. has a delay that makes me want to hurt something.
can someone PLEASE tell me how the hell to fix this phone? or IS there a fix? is this an android issue? a verizon issue? or an htc issue?????

okay- so... if you go to settings, about phone and click software- if your version is the 4.06, it's NOT up to date (even if your phone says it is)....
there is a 4.08 version that a lot of us have been trying and trying and trying to get to upload.
i have literally done EVERYTHING listed in these and other forums (including the reboot, the setting the date forward one month to one year) except what i finally did today- and it not only uploaded the 4.08 software, but it INSTALLED it as well (which was the main problem to being with. i could download the update, but it would either get stuck on the install/reboot page and never move from there, or the ONE time it actually did shut the phone down and restart, it said i didn't have enough space to install the update)! woo hoo!!!!
i looked at all of my downloaded apps, and then sorted them by size. i uninstalled the 8 biggest applications (twitter, facebook, movies, slacker, maps, i heart radio, etc) and then i restarted my phone. eventually, it downloaded the 4.08 update and i got the "install now" "install later" button... i hit install now and it really did reboot my phone! it also installed it. it took a bit of time, but it was doing things it had never done the past couple of weeks! so i knew it was actually working! woooo hooo!!!!
i reinstalled all of my uninstalled applications and they're fine. plenty of room on the phone, no issues there *knock on wood*.
and then all at once, i sat back and listened to 38 text messages come in (i stopped getting texts at some point thursday night)....
the low space icon is GONE! there is a new space thing in the settings- sd card & phone- called data settings (the one everyone keeps talking about that has virtually no memory/space)...
the only issue that i can see as of now- is that all of my photo's have disappeared. the ones on the phone as well as the sd card. my photo album shows 0 pictures.
and so yeah... to everyone, i recommend uninstalling some applications and then trying to get the new 4.08 to download and install. if your phone gets stuck and never reboots- download a few more apps. that is what i did until it freaking worked.

When I sign in to my bank account this pops up: na3zz.playnow.dollfield.eu and a bunch of numbers. Also it says update now, though I never click on it. Help.

As soon as I sign in to the bank but before I put in my secure passwords, I look and there is another Mozilla tab saying update 7 drivers, or update now. Above is one of the lines I saw in my browser. This doesn't seem to be happening on any other website and so far my bank account is fine. But this worries me. I tried my partner's computer and the same thing happened. I just did it again and this came up. (I have already updated to the newest firefox by the way.) This message came with the Mozilla logo too but it wouldn't copy over to this letter.

What you are experiencing is 100% related to Malware.
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

Photoshop CC 2014.1 update now available

The Photoshop CC 2014.1 update now available.
Today we are releasing an update to Photoshop CC that includes new 3D printing features and enhancements designed to make it easier to create beautiful 3D printed designs and give you more printing options.

The update also includes several fixes, including fixing an issue with Edit In Photoshop not working from Lightroom and Photoshop commands missing from Bridge Tools menu.
Getting the update:
Look for the update in the Creative Cloud application and click “Update”. If it doesn’t appear, you may need to quit and re-launch the Creative Cloud application.
If you don’t have the Creative Cloud application running, start Photoshop and choose Help > Updates.
The Adobe Application Manager will launch. Select Adobe Photoshop CC (2014) and choose Update.

It means the update for Photoshop 2014.1 and 2014.2 can only be installed with subscription licenses, but not on perpetual licenses (our case).
To workaround that, it would be needed to change
<TargetLicensingType>1</TargetLicensingType>
to
<TargetLicensingType>3</TargetLicensingType>
inside "UpdateManifest.xml"
But it would broken the signature of that file as recorded in "UpdateManifest.sig"
As an information, technically we have
LicenseType 3 LicenseStatus 1 , mapped LEID V7{}Photoshop-15-Win-GM
Finally, I think only Adobe can fix this mess with PS update.
