Update photo names in the library?

Hi all,
I've added all my pictures to iPhoto, but now they appear only with their name (eg. IMG_001, IMG_002 etc.) and i don't have any way to split them into single albums.
On the drive all photos are categorised in folders, for example
TRIPTO_USA_07/IMG001,
TRIPTO_USA_07/IMG002, etc.
I've tried to create smart folders, but the rules (eg. the "FILENAME CONTAINS") don't work because they are not able to recognise folder names.
I thought i could use a Batch renamer to modify all the names of the original pictures (eg. "TRIPTO_USA_07_IMG001") so I would be able to apply rules, but I need some way to update the library with the new names so that the rules can work.
any ideas?
thanks
Patrick

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As PTash mentioned if you imported your photos by dragging the folders they were in into iPhoto (or selecting those folders from the File->Import menu, they are in rolls that will have the same title as the folders. Make sure you have By Rolls selected in the View menu. Then you can create smart albums based on the roll/folder name. Or you can select a roll and do a batch, sequential rename of the files in that folder to whatever you want.
HOWEVER, those new titles will only be in iPhoto. The original files inside the iPhoto Library folder will still have their original file names. If you need those files to have the file name then you can export them to the Desktop via the File->Export->File Export menu route and use the Use Title option.
This will give you files titled "file name-1.jpg", etc.
OR:
Add the photos to an album that you've named like you'd like the files to be and export but with the Use Album Name option. This will give you files named "Album name-01.jpg" which will sort better than the other way. If you have more than 99 files exported this way then the natural order listing will only be good for the first 99.
If you still have the original photos in their folders you can uses a renaming application like R-Name to batch, sequential rename the files, with the proper zero padding before the number, and then import into iPhoto (or a new library). That's what I do as a routine. Upload to an appropriately titled folder for that shoot on the desktop, rename the files with the date and brief description and then import. A little work up front saves a lot of issues later on.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    Is this iPhoto on your Mac?  Are you referring to the photos that were in your iPhoto LIbrary prior to the upgrade to iPhoto 11?  If so then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
    3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
    4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    5 - Click on the Create button.
    Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
    If that's not what you're referring to then you should describe what is happening in more detail. Remember we can't see your Mac or your iPhone so need detailed and accurate descriptions of what you're experiencing.
    Also we need infomartion like do you have an iCloud account and are you logged into it on all of your devices, iPhoto and Mac? do you have Photo Stream enabled on both.

    Hi there Br0x,
    You may want to try rebuilding the iTunes library as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the article below for more information.

    iphoto, navigating:  when navigating my iphoto library is there a short cut or hotkey that will take the cursor to the last photo (bottom of the library)?

    A list of all iPhoto '11 shortcuts is here:
    Apple - Support - iPhoto - Keyboard Shortcuts
    I don't know of any keyboard shortcut to jump to the last photo, but if you option click the end of the scrollbar in the film strip you will jump to the last photo in the film strip.

  • I don't understand the difference between the number of photos shown in the library and the number that is updated at the end of a session. They are very different.

    In the Library in iphoto, under Photos, I have 1,896 photos. Sometimes, after working in iphoto, an update will flash through quickly at the top of iphoto. The last one showed 6,131 photos. Where are these photos?

    This question doesn't make any sense for iPhoto for iOS. If you are asking about iPhoto on your Mac you might want to post the question in the iLife > iPhoto forum instead of this forum which is iPhoto for iOS.

  • Issue Updating Photo Names in Web Gallery

    There is a sync issue with Web Galleries when the photo name is updated in iPhoto while another update is occurring simultaneously. The changes made in iPhoto are lost.
    The 7.0.2 Update does not fix this issue.
    It seems there should be the option to "update now" and make the web gallery look just like the iPhoto version.
    Anyone else have this issue?

    pschlampp:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The syncing works correctly for me. Try clearing out the iPhoto Cache folders that are in your User/Library/Caches folder and delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist that's in the User/Library/Preferences folder. See if that will let you update titles as intended.

  • Updating ID3 Tags in the library

    I have more than 4000 mp3s in my library, many are missing mp3 tags (downloaded mostly from limewire).
    I spent days and updated all the tag information in the original folder (external hard drive) using a tag editor (tagscanner) but I don't know how to update (or synchornize) my itunes library to recognize these new tags. My itunes library still shows the old tags (some without any tags and some with wrong genres...etc).
    Is there a way I can get itunes to recognize the new tag changes although the file name is still the same?
    I am using ITunes 6 (version 6.0.5.20) and Ipod 60GB with video.
    Thanks.

    I'm not sure if there is a proper way to "refresh" the database, but you can remove them from the iTunes library then add them back. Of course, you'll lose your ratings, play count, and may have to re-do some playlists.

  • Do you have problems updating photo names in iPhoto?

    It is an absolute nightmare.  Every other photo the edit name function just stops working.  It makes updating my names a big pain in the rear end.

    If you use a theme that has layouts without text boxes or themes that do not have autoload of text the text will not print even though you get a warning before ordering.  Folio is the only theme that automatically puts in some text.  The others just have placecard text that does not print.
    You can test it by by proofing the book according to this Apple document: iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture.
    These are two pages from the Picture Book theme of a 2 photo per page layout. One has text and the other doesn't.  The text you see is placecard text and will not display when printed.
    This is a screenshot of the pages in the PDF file:
    No text on the second page.

  • Can't see photos, tried rebuilding the library

    On my iMac G5 (flat panel) OS 10.3.2 iPhoto 4.03..I don't see my photos.
    I can find them in the library under Users/Pictures. But not in iPhoto. I tried rebuilding the library. It said can't find the library, so I located it, but no pictures are showing. I tried reinstalling from my iMac CD - same results.
    Should I first completely remove iphoto & the associates files first, reloaded iPhoto, run update, then rebuild? After I back up my libary?

    <table border="1" cellpadding="1" bgcolor="#ddffbb">so I located it, but no pictures are showing.</table>
    I take it you launched iPhoto with the Option key depressed and found and selected your iPhoto Library folder, right?
    What do you see when iPhoto opens? If you click on a thumbnail where the photo should be what do you see? Did you by chance do any renaming of files or folders within the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder? Did you run any software updates shortly before you encountered this problem?
    Off the subject but you might think about updating your system to 10.3.9 using the COMBO updater. It does have some very good improvements over 10.3.2. Be sure to repair disk permissions before and after running the updater.

  • Updating an image in the Library through ActionScript

    In Flash, you can select an image in the library and update it's path to a different picture, in turn affecting anything on the stage that uses that image. Can this be done with ActionScript? I know you can export the bitmap, but how do I address this in AS without having an instance name? Thanks for any response!

    "In Flash, you can select an image in the library and update it's path to  a different picture, in turn affecting anything on the stage that uses  that image. Can this be done with ActionScript?"
    no, you cannot edit a library item using actionscript.
    you could create a class that loads an image thereby allowing you to change the appearance of all class instances simply by changing the image loaded.  that would allow you to change images dynamically.  but all class instances created before changing the image would remain unchanged after the image change.
    even that issue could be resolved by storing all your class instances in an array, for example, and iterating through the array whenever previously created instances needed an image change.

  • Photos displays "Closing the Library" for a loooong time when quitting

    I Have just been migrating a large Aperture Library to the new Photos app. The import took many hours, and now just trying to quit, it is displaying the message "Closing the Library." This has been up for a couple of hours.
    IS this a one-time saving of thumbnails, etc. or will this happen every time?
    thank you,
    Ross

    Hi!
    My mom had the same problem the "Photos" app. She has a 21.5 inch, Mid 2010 iMac running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3.
    So I tried "Force Quitting" the Photos app by clicking "Force Quit," which is under the Apple Icon in the menu bar, highlighting the Photos app icon in the pop-up window and clicking the "Force Quit" button.
    Once Photos was closed, I shut down the computer waited for a minute, then powered the computer back on. Now the Photos app seems to be working fine, including having updated the library with photos taken recently, even during the period when the Photos app was having the problem.
    Let me know if this helps!

  • Creating Infopath forms programmatically - unable to update promoted columns in the library

    I referred to the following article and was able to create the forms successfully.
    http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/33228/Programmatically-create-a-browser-enabled-InfoPath
    But, I noticed that the generated Xml looks a bit different than if I'm creating the document through Sharepoint directly,
    for example, a snippet of the generated Xml (through Sharepoint) looks like:
    <my:Employee>
              <my:LastName>Test</my:LastName>
              <my:GivenName>Test</my:GivenName>
              <my:EmployeeNumber>1</my:EmployeeNumber>
    </my:Employee>
    but it looks like the following when I create the document from my C# code:
    <Employee>
          <LastName>Test</LastName>
          <GivenName>Test</GivenName>
          <EmployeeNumber>1</EmployeeNumber>
    </Employee>
    The issue that I'm noticing is that if I chose to publish some of columns (when I publish the form to the sharepoint site) then
    the columns will not show the values (I'm guessing that is due to the missing "my" before the fields).
    Is there a way to work-around that? or am I doing something incorrect on my side?
    Thank you,

    Here is a complete method for creating a new infopath form and updating some columns of the new form using sharepoint client object model:
            public string AddNewForm(string WebUrl, string NewTitle)
                string strMsg = "";
                if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(WebUrl))
                    return "Empty URL!";
                try
                    // Starting with ClientContext, the constructor requires a URL to the server running SharePoint.
                    using (ClientContext client = new ClientContext(WebUrl))
                        //client.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
                        // Assume that the web site has a library named "FormLibrary".
                        var formLib = client.Web.Lists.GetByTitle("FormLibrary");
                        client.Load(formLib.RootFolder);
                        client.ExecuteQuery();
                        // FormTemplate path, The path should be on the local machine/server !
                        string fileName = @"D:\Projects\FormTemplate.xml";
                        var fileUrl = "";
                        //Craete FormTemplate and save in the library.
                        using (var fs = new FileStream(fileName, FileMode.Open))
                            var fi = new FileInfo("newForm.xml");
                            fileUrl = String.Format("{0}/{1}", formLib.RootFolder.ServerRelativeUrl, fi.Name);
                            Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.File.SaveBinaryDirect(client, fileUrl, fs, true);
                            client.ExecuteQuery();
                        // Now we are going to update new form fields.
                        // Get library columns collection.
                        var libFields = formLib.Fields;
                        client.Load(libFields);
                        client.ExecuteQuery();
                        Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.File newFile = client.Web.GetFileByServerRelativeUrl(fileUrl);
                        ListItem item = newFile.ListItemAllFields;
                        // Here the index of Title column is 9, you may use this form to update any column (even promoted fields).
                        // To find the index of interested column you should inspect libFields at debug mode, look in the libFields.Fields collection to find the index!
                        item[libFields[9].StaticName] = NewTitle ;
                        item.Update();
                        client.ExecuteQuery();
                catch (Exception ex)
                    strMsg = ex.Message;
                return strMsg;
