Updated Apple ID email, can't switch iCloud username

I went through the process to change the email address associated with my Apple ID.  Almost everything is working great.  However, I have one problem.  My iPhone keeps screaming at me to type in my iCloud password.  The password doesn't work because my email is changed and the iPhone will not let me change the email address it's using to sign me into iCloud.  The field to change the username is disabled.  What do I do?

I fixed the problem, and this is how I did it:
Go to the My Apple ID site.
Log in with your Apple ID.
Under the "Name, ID and Email Address" section, there is an area where you can specify an alternate email address.  Add your old Apple ID email address to this list (you will need to verify the email address after submitting).
Now you can log into iCloud on your iPhone using your old email address.
If you wish, delete your iCloud account from your iPhone using your old email address and log back in using your new email address.  Now you can remove your old email address from the alternate email addresses list.

Lion is required to see the iCloud Preference Pane: this is an upgrade, not an update, and has to be paid for. If you want to install Lion, go to the Mac App Store and purchase and download it there ($29.99).
First check that your Mac meets the requirements for Lion:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

    Hello Brookeg189,
You may be able to use the password for your existing iCloud account to get past this dialog.

  • How can I change my primary Apple ID email to my new iCloud @me address?

I just updated to iOS 5 on my iPod touch and signed up for iCloud. I have a new @me email address. I want to make it the primary email address for my Apple ID, but when I type it into the "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" field, it tells me that I cannot use a MobileMe account for my Apple ID. It is not a MobileMe account, and I have never had MobileMe. I know that the email works with my Apple ID, since I can log into my account with it. How can I make it the primary email address?

While you can't currently change your Apple ID to a Mobile/iCloud email address, I found a solution that helps with a related problem.
Suppose you've recently got an iCloud email address, but Apple are still sending all your iTunes Store, App Store and Mac App Store receipts to your old gmail address (the one that's still your Apple ID). And suppose they're also sending all the Apple Support Communities notifcation emails to your old gmail address. How do you change it? How do you fix it?
Well the option exists, but it is hidden away in a weird place. To get Apple sending all of their receipts and notifications to your new iCloud email address...
    • Go to your country's Apple Store website http://store.apple.com/
    • Click on the Account button in the top-right corner
    • Under Account Settings, click on Change your default shipping or billing info
    • Sign in with your usual Apple ID and password
    • The email address listed under Payment Information is the key
    • Click on Edit next to Payment Information and change that email address to your iCloud address
That's all you have to do.

  • HT4759 I don't meet iCloud requirements, but apple says I can still switch over?

The email I received from apple today says "don't meet iCloud requirements?  You can still switch over...".
Yet when I click "move to iCloud now" on my iPhone with ios5, it says I must make the switch from a Mac or pc.
So I can't switch over from my iPhone, which DOES meet the requirements?  But not from my laptop, which doesn't?
    I'm thoroughly confused.
    Sent from my iPhone

You can switch on the computer. You can either use the option to switch at the end of June, or simply lie about meeting the specifications on the computer.

  • I changed my apple id now can't access iCloud

I got hacked, the support center gave me new I'd with new email. Now I can't access iCloud because it is stuck on old Id, help please I don't want to lose everything from pictures to downloaded apps. How do I access iCloud with new email and Id? How do I change iCloud Id and keep everything?

In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > iTunes & App store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.

  • I need to find out how to re-set icloud id on my iphone. I already had an apple id which is a family id. I used it as my id when setting up my new company phone. I have new apple id but can't change icloud phone. Still recognizes old id.

I have a new company iphone. When setting it up I used a current "family" apple id I created for the children's itouch's. I realized after the fact that all of their contact/content dat is syncing to my business phone. I created a new apple id for the phone, logged out of the old id and in with the new on my phone. However, it will not allow me to make this same change for icloud on the phone. The icloud is still associated to the old id. How can I change my phone icloud to sync with my new apple id and stop getting the kids content?

  • Updated Apple ID email and now can't find my older iCloud backups.

I recently changed my email address and now can't find my older iCloud backups. Surely they are still there, aren't they? Any ideas how to locate them? I am missing some important data I need to restore.

    Hi El Boz,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you simply changed the information or email address associated with your Apple ID (as opposed to creating an entirely new Apple ID), you may find the following article helpful:

  • Changed Apple ID and can't use icloud

okay, so basically today I changed my Apple ID and password. hours after changing it, my iMessage was not working. turns out my icloud is no longer working since I change my Apple ID. in icloud settings, it says my old Apple ID and it is greyed out and I can't change it. I have read that changing my Apple ID BACK to my original ID and password, and then deleting my icloud account, then switching my ID again would work. the problem is, that email for my old ID is "inactive" meaning I can't get emails, or the verification one. when I had tried that, because I couldn't get the verification emailI called apple and he said give it 24 hours to update, but from what I'm reading, that won't work.  I also do not remember my security questions since they were made years ago, and my rescue email or  whatever it is called is also inactive. I keep getting a pop up to log into icloud with my apple ID, and it asks for the password for my OLD ID, which obviously will not work since I changed it.  I think I might be stuck here.

You need to do the following:
    1.     Log into Manage your Apple ID and change your Apple ID using the EDIT button back to your old email address. This is temporary. Do NOT verify it, do NOT change the password: Apple - My Apple ID
    2.     Go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on Delete Account. Type in your current Apple ID password when asked, and follow the prompts to delete the iCloud account
    3.     Sign out of Messages: go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, click on your Apple ID, and then on Sign Out
    4.     Sign out of FaceTime: go to Settings>FaceTime, click on your Apple ID and then on Sign Out
    5.     Go back to Manage your Apple ID and sign in with the old Apple ID and your current password. Change the Apple ID back to the new email address. You may need to verify it again
    6.     Go back to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your new ID
    7.      Do the same with Messages and FaceTime
    Cheers,

  • Changed my apple id and can't change icloud to new id

i recently changed my apple id and when i try to update icloud on one of my devices, it says that apple id is incorrect, but of course, there's no opportunity to change it. any way to be able to choose the apple id i want to use for icloud on my iphone?

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.
When you do this you may find that the password for your old ID isn't accepted.  If this should happen, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, you need to temporarily recreate your old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Changed Apple ID and can't change iCloud on devices.

I changed my Apple ID and Password without first logging out of iCloud on my iPhone and iPad. iCloud is asking me to log in with the old ID and password which no longer exist. How do I get rid of the old icloud account and set up the new one on my iPhone and iPad since I deleted that ID??? Thank you for your help.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID.
