Updated Wikibook: How To Backup Operating Systems

I have updated my wikibook How To Backup Operating Systems to include a method for ext4 using the new FSArchiver, and also made it both GRUB v1 and v2 friendly, among other changes.  This guide is fairly newbie-friendly and is designed to help take some of the stress out of system updates and reinstallations by providing a reliable and easy system backup/restore solution.  It covers multi-OS systems including Windows.   It also contains a section "How The Computer Boots - The MBR Explained" that is good reading if you don't understand the boot process.

And a PDF version for printing...

  • How to call Operating System commands / external programs from within APEX

    Hi,
Can someone please suggest how to call Operating Systems commands / external programs from within APEX?
E.g. say I need to run a SQL script on a particular database. SQL script, database name, userid & password everything is available in a table in Oracle. I want to build a utility in APEX where by when I click a button APEX should run the following
    c:\oracle\bin\sqlplusw.exe userud/password@database @script_name.sql
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi Guys,
I have reviewed the option of using scheduler and javascript and they do satisfy my requirements PARTIALLY. Any calls to operating system commands through these features will be made on the server where APEX is installed.
However, here what I am looking at is to call operating systems programs on client machine. For example in my APEX application I have constructed the following strings of commands that needs to be run to execute a change request.
    sqlplusw.exe user/password@database @script1.sql
    sqlplusw.exe user/password@database @script2.sql
    sqlplusw.exe user/password@database @script3.sql
    sqlplusw.exe user/password@database @script4.sql
What I want is to have a button/link on the APEX screen along with these lines so that when I click that link/button this entire line of command gets executed in the same way it would get executed if I copy and paste this command in the command window of windows.
Believe me, if I am able to achieve what I intend to do, it is going to save a lot of our DBAs time and effort.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • How to use Operating System Commands while using define in sqlplus

How to use Operating System Commands while using define in sqlplus . The Host OS is Linux
    define report_name=PROD_${host date "+%b"}.html
    The above is not working.
    The output should be
    define report_name=PROD_JAN.html
    Regards,
    DB

of course I was talking nonsense: the problem here is the mixing of bind variables and DEFINE variables.
With the following changes the script should work (the conditions for begin_interval_time are perhaps not what you want):
    variable snap1 number
    variable snap2 number
    variable rptname varchar2(20)
    begin
    SELECT min(snap_id) into :snap1 FROM dba_hist_snapshot WHERE CAST(begin_interval_time AS DATE) >= SYSDATE-1;
    SELECT max(snap_id) into :snap2 FROM dba_hist_snapshot WHERE CAST(begin_interval_time AS DATE) >= SYSDATE-1;
    end;
    col file_name_value new_value report_name noprint
    select 'PROD_'|| to_char(sysdate,'MON') || '_' ||  to_char(sysdate,'DD') file_name_value  from dual;
    define  report_type  = 'html'
    define num_days=2
    define begin_snap=:snap1
    define end_snap=:snap2

  • HT4972 How do I update my I pod touch operating system?

May I please get some help on how to upgrade my Ipod Touch operating system?  I have done automatic updates through my computer, but now apps won't run.  Messges say program won't run with operating system.

If you have a first-generation iPod touch, iOS 3.1.3 is the final version you'll be able to run on your device. If you need to run apps that require a newer version of iOS, you'll need to purchase a newer model of iPod.

  • Just purchased a brand new mac and want to backup operating system to flash drive

Hey everyone, I just took the plunge and got my first mac! I am wanting to backup the operating system onto a flash drive before I really get into using the computer in case anything happens (I tend to have bad luck) anyone know how to do this on a new computer? I go to the app store and it shows I would need to purchase mountain lion to do it that way, and I don't see a way to do it from the system. Anybody know of a good way?

You will need a 32 GB flash drive to do this:
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
         5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the flash drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Note that you don't need the backup because Mountain Lion can be reinstalled directly from the Internet using Internet Recovery.

  • How to install operating system on new hard drive without installation disc on macbook pro 2011

My macbook pro 2011 does not come with a recovery disc or any disc at all, my hard drive recently failed and i have no backup. i have replaced the hard drive but don't know how to install the operating system on the new hard drive.

If it originally shipped with 10.7 or newer, connect the computer to the Internet and start it up with the Option, Command, and R keys held down. You'll be able to install an OS.
If it shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier and wasn't upgraded to use Apple's Internet Recovery system, phone AppleCare and order the disks.

  • New to Mac, How to backup my system?

Hi, I was recently given a non-working G4 400 (PCI) PowerPC. Up until receiving this Mac I had never actually seen one in real life... PCs dominate over here in the UK. I'm a CompTIA A+ Certified PC Technician so have no problems working with hardware.
After searching some trouble-shooting guides I found that it wasn't recognising the drive so I pulled it and tested it on my main PC using a diagnostic CD. As I thought it was shot. After a bit more searching I found I could use any IDE drive up to 128gb to replace it and popped in a spare 40gb Maxtor and swopped the CD-Rom for a DVD-Rom, then used disc utility on an iBook G4 disc I was given to initialise the drive. But couldn't get the OS (OS X 10.3.4) to install as it only had 128mb of ram at the time (the ram sticks had no stickers to indicate type and size).
So I checked the specs for OS X and after some more searching found I didn't need to upgrade the firmware on this model to be able to install it. So I swopped the Ram for 4x 128mb sticks and changed the pram battery as it kept resetting the date and time. I was then able to install and update the OS. Since then it's been working fine.
For the last couple of days I've just been learning how to do the basic stuff like install and uninstall and generally just finding my way around the Gui. I'm now at the stage where I would like to backup the system so that in the event of a disaster I can restore everything as it is now.
At the moment I have no external drives, zip drive or DVD-RW so I would like to make a backup to the second partitian. What utility should I use to do this and how?

I would like to backup the system so that in the event of a disaster I can restore everything as it is now<<</div>
If you backup to another partition (volume) of the same drive, that's hardly a preventative measure against disaster ... disaster being; hard drive failure, fire, flood, theft and my more possibilities.
To help with any real disaster recovery you'll need to back up your data off-site. You can set up a .Mac account or use any FTP site to backup and store data safely. Or purchase an external DVD burner to create regular backup discs for storage in a safe deposit box.

  • How to upgrade operating system

can't seem to find 10.7 operating system to download in able to upgrade to Icloud

How to Install Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Installed
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade to Lion:
Purchase the Lion Installer from the Mac App Store. The download will start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4 hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the time.
Boot From The Lion Installer which is located in your Applications folder.
    Follow instructions for installation.

  • How to get operating system username?

I need to get operating username and database username for auditing purpose. please suggest how to get os username to insert into auditing table by using triggers.

Normally, You should check the column 'osuser' from sys.v$session view.(username is the DBUser) Care should be taken to get the osuser of the current session! This work in client/server environment. Problems appear in web environment where a HOST program is more appropriate to do this and be invoked in Forms. (see metalink eg Note:1021606.6

  • How to copy operating system windows 8.1 on DVD

Just bought factory refurbished HP Envy Phoenix 810-160. There is no operating system CD included, in case I need to reinstall it. I heard I can have an option to do one time only this copy, but I notice there is Recovery Image (D: ) drive almost full (1.16 GB free og 9.95 GB). Is that means I do not have an option to this copy on DVD?
Please include detailed steps how to do this, I will appreciate any help!

    Hi:
You should have an option to create recovery media using the recovery manager program.
