Updating color sequences from final cut

I am completely new to Color but really like the extra control it seems to have over FCP color options. I am wondering how one goes about adding new clips to an already timed Color file? Basically, I have most of my fcp sequence in place and want to get a head start on the timing phase but there is one shot in particular that we cannot yet shoot. What is the best way to time what I have, resend to fcp, and then when the new shot is added to my timed sequence, import everything into color, have my grades still show up on the other clips so I can transfer them to the new clip, and then re-export? Hope that makes sense.

"Color timing" is more of an analog concept with actual lights and timers than it is a digital concept.
Typically, one doesn't start color work until the edit is locked. However, if you're chomping at the bit, you can change your edit within FCP and then follow the "reconform" procedure outlined within the Color User Manual. Be aware that the reconform procedure has been historically problematic for Color (Final Touch).

  • Exporting sequence from Final Cut Pro 7, some clips are pixellated and bad quality, does this have anything to do with the fact that I changed those clips speed?

    Hello,
Bit of a beginner using Final Cut Pro 7
Am currently trying to export a sequence using quicktime conversion.  Sequence has various filters and effects over it and when I export it some of the clips are pixellated and appear to have not exported correctly.  From what I can gather the affected clips have either been slowed down or made faster.  I am wondering whether this is the reason they have not exported correctly
    Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers

    More information needed.
    Codec of material?
    Sequence settings? (codec)
fwiw - do not use quicktime conversion. Use Export Quicktime with Current Settings enabled then do any format conversions in Compressor.

  • Exporting a sequence from Final Cut

I'd like to try mixing my 23 minute film in Soundtrack Pro, but every time I try to send it to SP, it crashes. Can anyone give me some advice? Or is SP not really supposed to be a sweetening tool for Final Cut?

    Hi Morgan,
I use Send to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project from FCP all the time. It should work.
Do you have the latest versions of both FCP and Soundtrack Pro?
If the send to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project is running into issues, then you can separate out the steps (involved in the send from FCP to STP) to try to better understand what it going wrong.
In Final Cut Pro, try exporting an XML file (File->Export->XML... -- select XML version 2).
Then in Soundtrack Pro open the XML file.
If either of these steps fail, try looking at the console (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app)--are there any messages that might provide hints about what went wrong (e.g. couldn't write out the file, etc.).
    I hope that helps.

  • Best way to go from Final Cut to DVD preserving Color Corrections

What is the best way to take my video project from Final Cut and burn it on a DVD (using DVD Studio), I need to preserve the color corrections I have made (used an external video monitor)? Also my camera shoots at black level IRE 0 and I have edited it that way, but as we all know NTSC TVs use IRE 7.5 is there anyway DVD Studio or FCP can convert the IRE so it matches?

    from FC; export to compressor
In compressor, choose appropriate preset (i.e. best quality, >90 minutes, 16x9)
encode the sound as dolby 2 (if you choose "all" you'll get an extra aif file)
take the 2 files (video and audio) into dvd studio to encode.
Not sure about your IRE 7.5 question, I always assumed it was automatically converted but now you have me thinking...

  • Color differences when exporting from Final Cut

I have a big problem when exporting from Final cut to any file format. The colors and contrast looks fine in Final cut and on my external monitor but when exporting to, for example, H.264 I get a file that is "washed out". Colors are bleak and the over all feel is not what I expect. The funny thing is that if I import the exported file into Final cut it looks fine. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me out with this?

QT brightens the image. Dunno why...perhaps so that it ensures that every monitor can see it?
    Here is an example:
But I don't know why that is.

  • New to Premiere, from Final Cut. Help editing native RED r3d

I am one of the many new converts to Premiere Pro CS5.5 from Final Cut after many years using the Apple software. I want to dive right in and start editing with Premiere, but I've run into an immediate snag.
First, I have heard endless discussion about Premiere Pro's abillity to edit raw RED footage natively. Just drag in the r3d files and go. Yet, I haven't even been able to get Premiere to get me this far in my editing workflow. I have worked extensively with RED footage, and in the past I was transcoding in Final Cut to a Pro Res (Proxy) and conforming/onlining at the end using log and transfer or RED alert. Naturally, I was excited to be able to drop in native RED files and never have to online at the end. Here's where my problem comes in: I drag in the r3d files from a recent shoot. 4k 23.967 shot on RED. I double click the clip in my project to open it in the source monitor and all I get is black. I can't scrub, I can't playback video or audio to make my cuts; all I get is timecode. HOWEVER, if I drag the r3d file straight to the timeline, I get picture/sound and everything. Of course, this is no way to edit and I can't just be dropping full clips into the sequence and trying to trim from there. Like any editor, I want to be able to double click my clip, scrub through it in the source monitor, and find the particular take I want to use. THEN, I add it to my timeline.
WHY am I not able to see/edit the raw r3d files in my source monitor? Has anyone experienced this problem? Frustrated and unable to start using this highly touted Premiere (which I wholeheartedly want to believe in). Please instruct me so I can get up and running with my RED footage. In the meantime, it's back to Final Cut 7...
I should mention that I am using a Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.4 GHz Mac Pro with 15GM Ram and an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card. I have heard NVIDIA is the way to go, but we aren't upgrading/changing graphics cards in the immediate future. So for now, this is what I will be using. Hopefully this is not the sole reason I can't playback/see anything in my source monitor with my r3d files.
    Thanks
    Daniel

Excellent! Changing to the Adobe player solved that problem (although, of course, it presented new problems, all related to Blackmagic card). Also, to answer your question-- yes, the pro res proxy files were working fine in Premiere.
Now I can see and edit my r3d files, which was paramount. However, now I can't get either the source monitor or program monitor to output playback through the blackmagic card to my external monitors (42" LCD and a smaller 17" Sony color correction monitor). I should note that both of these monitors are routed through my blackmagic card so they don't show up as options under the "playback settings" tab in the source/program monitors. Do I need to rerout these monitors differently so that Premiere Pro recognizes them and will utilize them as external monitors? I need them to playback for clients, bosses, etc.
Another note-- If I make my sequence a blackmagic preset, it will output the program monitor but only playback a few frames and then freeze. If I make it a RED cinema preset, it will playback fluidly but won't output to my external monitors.
The freezing, in my assumption, is due to the fact that the only blackmagic editing mode available is uncompressed 10bit, which doesn't playback well (it uses an editing mode of uncompressed 10bit even when I pick JPEG for the sequence preset).
I guess, in summary, my question is-- does blackmagic not integrate well with Premiere Pro CS5.5? Should I re-rout the monitors not using a BNC cable into the blackmagic card, but instead DVI them into the back of the Mac Pro? Thanks again Colin,
    Daniel

  • Importing file from final cut express to final cut pro

Hello, I am taking a video I have been working on from final cut express and opening it into final cut pro on another machine. It brings footage over but completely incorrect. I am editing a music video and its basically taking the files and putting them out of sequence etc. When I first open up final cut pro it will say do you want to update this video to the new version which I expected to which I respond yes but its jacked up after that. Any suggestions?

Generally, I just drag the DV file from the finder to the iDVD menu window. Make sure you don't drag it to any Drop Zones, I think that might be your problem with the DV file showing up as the background. If you have default settings in iDVD, this drag and drop should then create submenus based on your chapter markers.
I'm not sure if you have any issues with the Chapters not showing up in QT. If you're expecting them to show up, then make sure that when you do the Export to QT that the option to include Chapter Markers is set. Upon conversion, you should see the Chapters within QT as well as when imported into iDVD.
    Hope this helps!

  • Is there an upgrade path from Final Cut Studio 3.0 to Final Cut Pro X?

Is there an upgrade path from Final Cut Studio 3.0 to Final Cut Pro X ?

The price of FCPX pretty much is the cost of the upgrade of FCPStudio, but a much better value (at least so far -- every update has been free.) However, it's only the single app so you might feel like you're not getting as much for your money. Don't be fooled. Most of Color and Soundtrack Pro are built into FCPX. FCPX will conform video automatically so Cinema Tools aren't really needed anymore. The Motion engine is part of FCPX, although I do recommend buying Motion 5 (an extra 50 bucks.)  (Motion 4 seems to have died in Yosemite - you can't even launch it.)
I "upgraded" from Final Cut Studio 3... it took me about a week to decide to pack up all the old software for good. YMMV.  However, if you use DVD Studio Pro... hang on to that.

  • Mini-Dvi to Video out from Final Cut Pro working

Thanx Everybody for posting reply for my post regarding running video out to external TV from Final Cut Pro in MacBook.
    It's working fine.

@ Studio X : The files were originally created with Final Cut Pro, rendered out to QuickTime, then are being played back with Final Cut Pro. The file that has the most noticable studdering is a 60-minute timeline sequence in Final Cut. All files are being stored and played back from the Mac Mini's internal hard drive. Everything was originally shot on DV and formatted for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
@ Shane Ross : Are there any settings in the MacOS or FCP where I can improve the HDMI video signal? Or do you know of / have any experience with Firewire to HDMI converters? Unfortunately, my new signal path relies on HDMI from the video playback.
My current setup uses the Firewire output, which is then converted to composite video & analog audio using a pair of ageing DV tape decks. That setup is becoming troublesome due to age.

  • Video playback from Final Cut Pro studders over HDMI

I have a problem playing back video from FCP. The video output will studder during horizontal pans when I output via HDMI. The audio output is not affected.
I have been playing video successfully using FireWire for output in FCP, however, my new video switcher system will not support FireWire output.
What are some possible causes of this problem?
    System stats:
    * Mac Mini (2010 model)
    * 8GB RAM
    * OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard)
    * Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 (Final Cut Studio 3)

  • How Can I do an export that from Final Cut Pro 7 that is specific to these settings?

    Hi
I am current trying to export out a movie from Final Cut Pro 7 but the settings that are required are very specific and I was going to try it through compressor as well but I wasn't sure if that would work either.
    Here are the settings:
    HD:
    1 Video CODEC                 XDCAMHD50
    2 Wrapper format           QuickTime Self-Contained
3 Bit rate                              50 Mbit/s Constant Bit Rate (CBR)
    4 GOP                                   Long GOP
                                                 Closed GOP
5 Time code                       Must include embedded time code. Start-timecode: 10:00:00:00
6 Movie version               UK Home Video Version
7 Delivery time                 As per contract. Supplier to specify filename, delivery format and estimated time of arrival via email at least 60 days before                                                           transmission unless otherwise specified in contract. This should be accompanied by an IMDB link.
    1 HD video format           720 line progressively scanned (720p) @ 50Hz (25 FPS)
                                              1080 line interlace scanned (1080i) @ 50Hz (25 FPS)
    2 Resolution                      1280 x 720
                                               1920 x 1080
3 Aspect ratio                    Content should be 16:9, however 4:3 will be accepted on exception (such as for older movies shot in 4:3)
4 Graphics                           Must be within 16:9 safe graphics area (EBU R95-2000)
    5 Chroma format              4:2:2
1 HD audio format           24 bits/sample 48 kHz sampling rate
    2 Track layout                    Track 1 – 2.0 Stereo L mono
                                                Track 2 – 2.0 Stereo R mono
                                                Track 3 – L
                                                Track 4 – R
                                                Track 5 – C
Track 6 - Low frequency effects LFE
                                                Track 7 – L Surround
                                                Track 8 – R Surround

First of all, what are your sequence settings?  Looks like they want stereo AND dolby 5.1 audio tracks embedded in the quicktime (I've delivered a few films like this).  Do you have a surround sound mix?
You will almost always have more options and control in compressor over fcp so that's the way I'd go, but not sure compressor will give you the ability to match these specs.
Do you understand about safe zones for graphics?  If not, post back.
I don't see any option to set the GOP in xdcam in compressor.  This may be built in to the xdcam format.
I don't see any option for 720 xdcam hd in compressor.
There are many other tools available for this kind of work, but they may be out of your price range.  You might want to just find a facility with experience in deliverying this sort of thing.

  • Retrieving imported AVCHD files from Final Cut Pro X

Hi there, does anyone know how to retrieve raw AVCHD clips from Final Cut Pro X, after they have been imported? I shot some footage on my GH2 and it DID import from the camera into FCP X, but it's not running smooth at all. I heard that it's better to convert the files into pro res first, but I wanted to see if it worked. It does work, but not very well. So now I want to find the original video files I imported and convert them into pro res and then import again. Anyone had experience with this?

I think it all comes back to work flow. The whole reason I have opted to convert the original files to pro res is because it is choppy in the timeline when I'm editing. It seems it's true that FCP X really prefers to work with 'optimized media'...or Pro Res instead of reformatted versions of AVCHD. I would like to work with this original format, mainl because the footage isn't as compressed and hasn't lost a generation...and look absolutely pure and gorgeous in high bit rate from my GH2, however, what choice do I have but to convert to Pro Res if I am unable to edit smoothly? I think Ian had the right idea when he said to compare the footage of both, but again, if I can't even edit in AVCHD then what's the point? I think Apple needs to rectify this in the next update as I'm sure there are so many users out there who would prefer editing in this original format. Is there a noticeable loss of quality, that's what I am curious about.

  • Workflow from Final cut Pro

    Hello there,
I have a three minute video sequence in Final Cut Pro and
want to post it on the web for streaming. My question now is:
should I export from FCP using my quicktime export to flash
file function or do I get better quality when I convert in the
    Flash media encoder.
The follow on question then is: how do I know what setting to
    use in FCP?
Or if I would go the other way: what format should my movie
be in to import into the Flash media encoder?
    thank you so much.

it appears that if you check only "include crossfades"(during the fcp omf export) it does retain those once in logic, but if you check both "levels" and "crossfades", nothing gets retained. strange.

I will update to the latest (10.0.9) and update this thread to see if this will resolve my problem.
