Updating firmware when I can't get an internet connection through the router

I am trying to update the firmware for WRT54G V8, but some of the instructions indicate I need to have the router connected and be connected to the internet.  I cannot get an internet connection through the router.  Can I upgrade firmware without being connected to the internet through the router.  (I have had this router for about a year and a half with no problems until now.)

Yes, you can upgrade the firmware without an Internet connection.
To upgrade the firmware, first download the new firmware into a computer that you can wire to your router.
Next, power down your entire network.
Then wire the computer to a LAN port on the router.
Disconnect all other wires from the router.
Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
Power up your computer.
Login to the router, and do the firmware upgrade  (it will likely take several minutes).
Power down your entire network.
Next you need to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
5) Power down the router.
6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead. Report back with this problem
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. Report back with this problem.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

I just got my cable company to switch my wireless router to a wired one considering now I have the wireless airport device (the newest one) but now I can't get a wireless signal. The router works when directlyplugged in,the aiport wireless device is green. I've tried going through my new MacBook Pro settings and it the diagnostics check, it says network changes detected, I tell it that it "yes" does connect to a cable modem, it tells me to restart it, after I do it asks if there are any other devices hooked up ( firewall) and when I say no it tells me that it can't fix the problem.
Now I know that I probably have a new IP address because of the cable company switching the boxes but it was working fine with the other box, now there isn't a signal to be had on it!
Please anybody out there that can help!!!??

Any time you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle with the new equipment. Check out the following AirPort User Tip. Please post back your results.

  • IPad 2 and iPhone 4 - can't get an internet connection while tethered

I have an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. Been using the iPhone to tether my iPad for a few weeks and all of a sudden when it's tethered I can't get an internet connection. Both iPhone and iPad are updated with latest software.

Hello Emma I presume your in the UK.
In the UK PPPoA is the standard PPPoE is not supported by many ISP's.
On your Mac just use DHCP in your Network settings. Do not use PPPoE.
Then login to your router's web configuration page. http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1. Admin and Password are the usual login details for netgear routers.
    use the following details
    PPPoA
    VC-Mux
    Chap authentication
    vpi and vci are 38,0
and of course use your isp username and password.

Hi..I have an AirPort Extreme base connected to my DSL Modem and has been working fine. But I recently bought another DSL modem along with the latest Airport Express. With this one however I can't get it to connect to the Internet. The light on the Express is flashing green though. Does it mean I have to re-set the settings on Airport Utility? I.e. the old settings haven't been cleared yet. Any suggestions?

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:

The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.
    Extreme, Express, Time Capsule

Return your phone and get your money back. There are no unlocked iphones sold in the US...none...zero...nada. All US iphones are locked to AT&T with no way to officially unlock them as AT&T will not authorize the unlocking of an iphone for anyone for any reason. Doesn't matter if purchase the iphone with or without contract, they are all locked to AT&T. Return it and purchase a phone in France. All of the carriers there offer unlocking.

What do you mean it did not work!  What were the results of the diagnostic tests?
Have you contacted your ISP to determine if the problem is on their end?
Have you changed your router channel?  Sometimes this resolves wireless problems.

  • Can't get a secure connection to the iTunes store

Hey, been trying to connect to iTunes store for 4 months now. It used to work on my computer but now it says there's a problem getting a secure connection to the iTunes store. Its not the firewall or the network. Have tried: removing AVG, flushing dns, emailing apple, updating iTunes, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, changing to a new wireless network, but nothing worked. Have looked at all the pages of possible errors for windows but can't find anything that works.
Any ideas? My computer used to have Norton 360 on it but it was deleted. Could there possibly be some files remaining that are preventing a connection to the iTunes store?

  • Can't get an internet connection

    Hello,
I have been using my macbook for the past year and a half without a single problem until a few weeks ego.
From some odd reason i can't connect to any wireless networks (my own or others).
When i connect i get a good 5 lines connection signal, but when i try to surf the web it turns into exclamation mark.
When i open the network preferences i get the following message:
"AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.221.64 and will not be able to connect to the internet"
When i connect to the router directlry with a cable the internet works fine.
    Help anyone?....

Started having the same issue but mine would connect in some parts of my home and not in others. In the part that it would not connect (only two feet from my timecapsule), I noticed a new wireless network was in existence. I suspected wireless radio interference. I changed my wireless channel on my dsl modem (2wire homeportal 1000) through the 2wire website and then changed the channel on my timecapsule by going Applications>Utilities>Airpport Utilities and doing a manual setup on my timecapsule. Everything is working now.

  • Having a problem getting an internet connection through WRT54G at school

I recently purchased a WRT54G router to try and set up a wireless network within my dorm. The internet connection is already being provided by the school itself and comes to me through a box that provides the internet/phone line/and cable. The problem I am having is getting the connection to go through my router. When I plug the router into the unit that is giving my computer the connection currently the router recognizes some sort of connection because the "Internet" light is on. I can't follow the directions of installation exactly because I don't have the actual modem in my room. Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem are welcome.

    hi ,
if your computer is connected to linksys router through the wire in that case what u can do is ..
you can swich off your modem and linksys router ...after that swich on only your mode and than wait for the lights to get stable once the lights are stable than swich on the linksys router ..and this should fix your issue
    or
if you are connecting to the linksys router wirelessly than connect any of your computer to the linksys router through wire and than on your computer open a internet page and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 you will get the linksys setup page make the wireless settings and than seacrch for the wireless network on the othe wireless laptop you should find your network than try connecting to that network once u r connected to that network u will be able to go online ..
if still the issue remains same let me know  u r network setup
    (Mod Note: Removed Email address.)

  • Went from wrt 310n to 610n now i can't get it to connect to the internet.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had this problem.  I changed my router from an old linksys wireless G speedboost to the wrt 310n.  The setup disc was wonderful and I had no problems at all.  What surprised me was that the setup disc knew I had a router and guided about changing the router..  Everything went well and I had no problems for a day.  Then I saw the dual band 610n wireless n.  So I took out the wrt 310n and exchanged it for the 610n.  During the setup disc which looked almost similar to the 310n one, I encountered a slight problem.  It states that I don't have an internet connection.  I rebooted everything and still does not work. I'm connected to the network but no internet connection.  My computer gets an IP address of 192.168.1.100.   I checked my username and password because I'm using a PPPOE DSL connection.  I hooked up my modem directly to the computer and I got an internet connectoin. So I did the setup disc.  When it was time to switch to the router, it still does not pick up an internet connection.  Any tips in solving this?  Is my stuff defective?

Thanks for responding.   I tried that method and it didn't work for me. Also, I need the MTU to be above 1400 for online play.  However, I found this on amazon review about the WRT610N.  http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B001AZ01EO?showViewpoints=1  Seems like everyone is either enjoying this router or having problems with it.
This guy says the solution is to change the router's address to 192.168.2.1.  Ok I'm confused, but why does changing the router's address seem to work for some people.  I'm gonna try this when I get home from work later.  But can anyone tell me why changing the router's address may be the answer to get this router to connect to the internet?  Has this solution worked for anyone else that was having the same problem.  Also, why isn't this implemented in wrt610n, but all the router versions before it seems to be fine? (WRT310N, WRTGS, etc.) You would think the wrt610n is almost like the top of the line router you can get for your home that they would have implemented this in the setup disc or the router.  For it being Dual band maybe?  Who knows, this is a mystery to me.
    Solution
    http://www.amazon.com/review/R16YOJTVKHJI15/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&ASIN=B001AZ01EO&nodeID...
I also found this answer in the linksys docs as well under step #2.  Almost makes the setup disc useless to me.
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3687&lid=7783210227B...
Not too sure why that would work.  I'm kinda embarassed to ask this since I graduated in networks and security of a Comp Sci degree. .  Hope my teacher isn't reading this.

  • Can't get Tunes to connect to the store...yep....Windows8!

I think I have tried all the "tips". Downloaded new software, set the compatability and made sure itunes was on the list to pass the firewall. NOTHING works.

Thanks for the reply Sara. When I run diognostics....I get verification that the Internet connection has been established, but I get a failed notification that indicates a "secure link" has not been established between me and tunes and that tunes is being blocked by the firewall. I have added tunes as an acceptable app in the firewall, but this does not solve the problem. I keep getting the indication that tunes was set to run in XP service pak 3, but I have manually changed that as well.....it just won't seem to change. I have downloaded tunes 4 times to this new PC running 8 and the downloaded version has never ran on XP, yet it keeps indicating the program is trying to run as XP. I can't seem to change that or disable the compatability mode. Sorry to say that the Apple reps. have been of no help at all. Tunes continues to want to run in XP mode....and I can't change it.
I'll go read that post you mentioned above from 19Chevy and see if I can discover anything. Tunes keeps trying to run as XP and I can't seem to change it, or remove the conpabality feature.

  • Can't get pass "Internet connection" on Setup wizard for new Linksys WRT54g router

    Hello everyone.
Well, I just bought (today) a Linksys WRT54G wirelss router and wile going through the Setup portion of the wizard (part of the installation of the EasyLink Advisor application), after I connect all the cables (in proper order) it tries to establish an Internet connection but comes back saying that no Internet connection is present. I tried powering off and umplugging the Verizon Westell modem I have but it still says the same thing.  I even tried to get the set up completed with two other verizon modems I have but just can't get pass checking for Internet connection.
My ISP is Verizon and I use just a regular DSL connection using a Westell VersaLink model 327W.
Is there anything I need to do to get this going?  I mean, the set up CD shows how to hook up the cables and everything so it really is not that hard but right after the "hook up the cable" portion it check for an Internet connection and that's were I get stuck.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Your problem is that the Westel "modem" is actually a "modem-router", and it uses the same 192.168.1.x  address space as the WRT54G.
The ideal solution is to place the Westell into "bridge" mode.  This will convert it to a true modem (all router features are turned off).   I assume you are using PPPoE  (if this is not correct, please let me know).   If so, then you will need to setup the WRT54G to do your PPPoE login, when the Westell is set to bridge mode.  Also note that you must first disconnect the Westell from the WRT54G and from the Internet, before you attempt to place the Westell into bridge mode.
An alternate solution is to leave the Westell as is, disconnect it from the WRT54G, then login to the WRT54G and change the "Local IP address" to 192.168.2.1 , then reconnect your system.  In this case, the Westell will do your PPPoE login, and the WRT54G will be set to "Internet connection type" of "DHCP - automatic".  If all you do is browse the web, do some emails, and basic stuff, this setup will probably work OK.  If you are planning more complicated stuff (Internet gaming with port forwarding, video conferencing, etc.)  then be sure to use the "bridge" mode described above.

  • Can´t get my Internet connection to work

I´m trying to connect through AOL on a MacBook using an ethernet broadband connection.
Unfortunately my AOL Connect software doesn´t detect my broadband modem. The modem and the ethernet cabel both work fine when connected to my desktop pc.
I´ve been playing around with the network preferences all day now and I´m starting to get a little frustrated.
Is there something I´m missing or could it be a hardware problem ?
Has anyone else had this problem ?

What are your Network settings? Port Configuration order?
