Updating Ipod on iTunes Problem

Everytime I connect my Ipod to the usb, it shows up on itunes and as a drive. But when usually the ipod should be updating, it brings up a window saying itunes isn't responding, giving me options to send the error report or not, and then no matter which i choose, itunes closes and ipod does not update. Even if I reopen itunes, the difficulty happens again. Please help.
THANKS

  • Updating ipod .. itunes acting weird

When I plug in my ipod it will automatically start yo update. But now, it refuses to update and it says "Songs on the ipod 'kiwi'(my ipod name) cannot be updated because all of th3e playlists selected for synching no longer exist."
What is going on? I need immediate help because I'm elaving tomorrow.
PS: It took all my songs off my ipod. :S

This problem arises when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod and then the playlist (or playlists) it has been updating from is deleted. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod, iTunes by default makes a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make this a normal playlist and drag whatever you want to it or you can make it a random Smart playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano). Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting and checking what playlists you want to send to the iPod:

  • Cannot Update iPod From iTunes

    Hi-
I just tried to sync my iPod from my iTunes library and I got the error message: "Attempting to copy to the disk "ALEX'S IPOD" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." I have previously been able to sync my iPod with no problem, and I just started getting this message. I have an iPod shuffle and that syncs no problem. The iPod is a 5g video with a 30 gb hard drive. This seems to have happened for no apparent reason. I tried looking at the article for this error message but that didn't help.

Hey...I get this problem ALL the time...This is what I do:
    1. Yell, at the iPod
    2. See if iTunes can eject the iPod, else
    3. Unplug your iPod.
    4. Let it come back to 'life' (I'm clearly not using technical terms here)
    5. Plug it back in, and start to sync again, only this time I hit the 'X' button about 100-500 songs in...it varies. This partially syncs your iPod, chances are you will still get that error message, but all you have to do is just start to sync again and tell iTunes to stop syncing before you get to the song where the syncing failed.
    An example:
Say you have 1000 songs on your iTunes, and you want to sync YOUR iPod.
Plug it in to your computer...some songs transfer, lets say 250...then you get your error message...'Attempting to copy to the ipod "Alex2a's iPod" failed. The disk can not be read from or written to'
Look at the song number where this happened..in this case it is 250.
Well unplug your iPod, and let the syncing re-start. It should start at zero songs...Everything is the same as the first time you started syncing-Only this time tell iTunes to STOP syncing at say 170 songs...then let the iPod hard disk spin down (this may take up to 10 seconds...most likely less) then tell iTunes to sync your iPod again. The 170 songs are on your iPod now. Repeat this procedure until the iPod is completely updated.
It is kinda a pain, but it does fix the problem, and generally speaking if you don't sync a lot of songs at one time, you'll rarely run into that error message.
    Hope this helps.

  • Updating iPod  hangs iTunes

I have a laptop that I use on a docking station at home and at the office. My iTunes library is on an external hard drive at home, and I play songs directly off my 60GB video iPod at work.
This setup has worked fine in the past, but I have recently been having some issues connecting my iPod at work. The "Updating iPod" message appears, and the spinning activity icon appears next to my iPod in the left-hand menus. It works fine for a while, but soon the spinning icon stops and iTunes freezes. I can CtrlAltDelete out of iTunes but that is it.
I have tried the 5 Rs (short of re-formatting the iPod since I don't really think that is the issue!) but am a loss as to what to do next. Any ideas?

Hey, you the man. I just want to say thank you. I hooked up a just repaired touch wheel iPod to my son's g4 iMAC, and it kept hanging on random songs and even the one's it transferred, it did slowly. I tried everything everyone else has, I did restores and erases forever. And it kept hanging up, so I had to frequently disconnect the iPod to get control back of the computer. This morning I was on the phone with Apple tech for over an hour. His conclusion was that because some of the songs weren't purchased from the Apple Store, I needed to manually transfer each song one at a time. I had to go, so didn't get to try it until later today and same problem. Again I called Apple tech support. Guy was very nice, on phone with him for 90 minutes, he didn't think the first advice made much sense. He gave up in frustration when we couldn't get into the disk utility because iPod kept going to automatic update. He told me to call back tomorrow and speak to a specialist. He said he's never had this much difficulty with an iPod. After the call, I managed to get into the disk utillity and do the erase and repair but didn't do anything. When I finally deactivated the auto update, manually transferring the songs one at a time didn't solve the problem. I read your post, started up after disconnecting the iSight firewire cable, took a chance of activating auto update of songs again, and voila, it transferred all the songs (all 176 of them) in about 10 seconds, like a warm knife through butter. And as they said on Saturday Night Live, it felt "like butter." I will call Apple tomorrow and tell them they really need to do something about this. In the meantime, I'll keep iSight disconnected whenever songs are being transferred into the iPod.
Again, your advice is much appreciated. Thank you for the post.

  • Updating iPod in Itunes 7

I've found yet another problem in iTunes 7, and I can't find any discussion or solutions so far.
While I'm hesitant to update my iPod firmware from 1.1 to 1.2, for the first time last night I was unable to move a Video Podcast onto my iPod because my "software is not current". I got this error from iTunes.
However, when I attempt to update my iPod from the iPod page in iTunes7 = I click on the update button > iTunes then ejects my iPod > then a pop up displays with a progress bar with the verbiage "updating iPod".
Nothing is being updated because the iPod was ejected. I've left this window for over 15 minutes thinking maybe just maybe.... but iTunes is actually locked and not responding. I have to use Task Manager to shut it down.
Has anyone else ran into this problem, more importantly anyone solved this problem?
    Thanks in advance!

okay, let's try upgrading to itunes 7.0.2.16 and then trying another update. (so far, 7.0.2.16 seems to be doing a bit better than the earlier 7.0.x versions when it comes to updating ipods.)

  • Updating iPod from iTunes sporadically causes system reboot

This one is driving me slowly crazy, so help is appreciated.
I'm running version 6.0.4.2 of iTunes and iPod updater 2006-03-23 on a Windows XP Media Center PC with a 20 gig iPod Photo. Have been blissfully using iPod and iTunes for months with zero issues with regular updates when prompted.
Over the last couple of weeks, my computer is sporadically rebooting in the middle of an iPod update. This usually happens in the following sequence:
    1. Open iTunes
    2. Connect iPod
    4. Automatic update happens
    5. Make some changes in iTunes, such as downloading new podcasts
    6. Update iPod manually using File, Update iPod
    VOILA! Reboot.
It doesn't always happen on the manual update. Sometimes, it happens with the automatic update (although less often). Every once in a while the manual update goes through just fine.
After this started happening, I thought long and hard about any system changes and had installed a new DVD/CD burner program, so I removed it, rebooted, reset the iPod, updated both iTunes and the iPod updater. Just for good measure I ran a full virus scan and AdAware to get rid of any unknown nasties.
Well, it's still happening and I am stumped and annoyed. Any ideas on what I might be able to do here?
    Thanks a lot!

    hi Heather!
are you getting any sort of blue screen? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • Cannot Update iPod in iTunes 7.01

i can't seem to update my ipod in itunes 7.01. right before the 'updating xxx's ipod' thing shows up, it ejects it. yes, i've also tried putting it in disk mode but it still doesn't work. the current software for my 5G is 1.1.1, trying to go to 1.2.

  • Updating 5G iPod in iTunes problems!

I want to change my iPod settings in iTunes 7.0 so that it will only sync unwatched movies, however when I click the "apply" button, I just get a "Waiting for iPod" dialog box and then after about 30 secs I get an error saying "iPod could not be updated because those settings could not be found" Whats wrong? My iPod has the latest firmware verson (1.2)

Oh, if I try to update my iPod using the work computer, it recognizes the fact that it was updated on a different machine and wants to wipe it out and start over.
I can't solve your other problems but for this one i would advise you to set your ipod to manually update songs. that way your other computer won't bother you with messages to wipe clean your ipod and you can update it with new content on both computers. Hope this helps.

  • HELP !!! Problem Updating IPOD with Itunes.....

just recently my ipod has been giving me this error message when i try to update the songs on my Ipod. "Some of the songs in the Itunes Music Library, were not copied to the ipod because you are not authorized to play them on this computer". I dont understand why, i purchased the songs from itunes and am using my computer that i purchased it on. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem, or why its doing that now. I have had my Ipod for about 2 months and all of a sudden i get this message.. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Windows XP   Windows XP

Not sure if this will help or not. In the upper right hand corner of your iTunes main window you should see your ID name. If you do not see your name there click on the button in it's place, I think it says login, and log into iTunes. (It's just above the playlist and below the browse or update button.)
You might get a message saying your computer is not authorized. Go ahead and authorize it, again if necessary, and voila! You should be in business.
(If you see your name in that button I am at a loss!)
Check too to see if you have the latest version of iTunes. Could be if you downloaded a new version something goofy happened in the install. Check your preferences too to see if something is checked that should not be.
    Hope that helps a smidgen,
    Bill
