Updating Metadata on command

I am following the suggestion to update the metadata manually when there are 100 or so images where the metadata has changes so as to not tax Lightroom to the point of slowing down unacceptable. This is working fine and I am very happy with the general response I get from Lightroom on a Vista PC, 2gb Ram, 2.4ghz dual core.
My question is that sometimes I lose track of some of the images that I add metadata to (especially some keywords). Is there a simple way to select only those images that need the metadata saved to file? That way I can be sure to catch all and keep everything saved and current?
mike

I posted a feature request a while back asking for a way to sort/find those images whose metadata date do not match the LR database. No one indicated that such a sort/find is currently possible, so hopefully it will be in a future software update.

  • The 'Update Metadata' icon displays even after saving metadata

After upgrading from v3 to v4.3, I opened my catalog (Lightroom made a copy of the file and converted it for v4.3). I didn't do anything to the images, but noticed several displayed the 'Update Metadata' icon. (I should note the 'update metadata automatically' option in the preferences is turned off to save ROM.)
Since I update the metadata manually, it's possible I forgot to save these several files — but when I try to save them, the icon persistently returns within seconds, or when I scroll away and come back.
I'm running an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and 165 GB of disc space. The Lightroom files are on an external drive, and the images are DNGs.

For DNG the best solution is to run the 'Update DNG Preview and Metadata' command, which can be found under the Metadata menu. This method builds a completely new DNG file before removing the old file.
As to the cause - two known at present:
    1. Auto Exposure or Lens corrections, and
    2. Applying Spot Heal corrections with opacity less than 100%
The first is complicated by the fact that it's also associated with updating of the thumbnail previews (basically a timing issue) and has been around for a long time, although not everyone sees it. The second is more recent and much easier to reproduce.
Adobe engineering are aware of these bugs, but I supect that the fix is still some way off. The user level fix for both is as mentioned above, but further develop adjustments can result in it returning.

  • How to allow CS users to update metadata on several items? (UCM 10gR3)

In the UCM 10gR3 portal user interface:
It is convenient for us to allow users to update metadata fields on a group of items in one action. We want to allow users to select any number of files from a CS search result.
After selecting the items, we want to users to be able to set new values for some fields (e.g. Security Group and Document Type) without touching the values of the other metadata fields (such as Author).
This seems to be pretty basic functionality, but we cannot seem to find it in the CS user interface. What is the easiest way to do this in the CS user interface?
    Thanks!

Unfortunately freezing the metadata model is not an option in practice. While we may make a model that serves us well for the time being, we are likely to end up in a situation where the outside world invalidates our metadata model.
    A hypothetical case
    From the UCM Administration Manual:
"Choose only static information as a security group. For example, department names change infrequently, so they can be considered static; projects come and go, so they might not be considered static."
Although department names may change infrequently, they are likely to change sometimes. Sometimes departments are split up or merged.
    A real case
In our concrete case, a project will generate a large amount of content distributed over many content items. After the production of this content within the project the responsibility will be transferred to a number of different departments. It is thus impossible to know in advance which metadata model will be suitable and it seems that the archiver is inefficient in solving the problem of delegating the content to different security groups.
Obviously, we are not interested in making heavy customization that we need to maintain. And reassigning the security group of many content items individually is not a feasible solution.
Has anyone had similar needs? What solutions have you used?

  • Updating metadata

    Hi guys,
I have a big problem here and I need help. Its getting very urgent! I am trying to find the best way to update the metadata in Hyperion 11.1.1.3. I am actually creating a cube that will be using for reporting only. That cube must be updated very frequently to follow the structural changes in the company. It will be use as a reporting utility for the moment so I will have all the data in there. My problem is that everytime I am creating a profile to update the flat file for account metadata, I am creating shared members where there are changes in the structure. When I am loading my profile, instead of replacing the old accounts and creating the new ones, the system creates a shared member at one place and leave the old member where it was. The problem with these shared members is that the value of the member is double count so it causes me lots of problems when its time to analyse the data.
Does anyone can suggest me a way to update metadata frequently while avoiding the shared member problem?
    Thanks for your suggestions!
    Cheers!

We are rolling out 11.1.1.3 on February 14, and are having the exact same issue. The "replace" option does not actually replace the dimension--hence, the shared member problem. Oracle said that the latest patches would resolve this issue, but we applied the latest EPMA patches with no resolution. I have an open support case with them right now.
We are loading from the interface tables, but if you are loading from a flat file--you can use the "IsPrimary" property to prevent a second member (shared) from coming in.

  • Request: Ability to update metadata via spreadsheet view or csv file upload

A fairly simple change to make Muse more efficient and user-friendly.
I'm in the process of building out a medium size site for a client (90+ pages) - my first experience using Muse - and editing metadata is a pain. I've planned the site: page titles, descriptions, page names, etc, but updating metadata isn't the first step in my creation process and now I'm going back through updating information. My have a 2013 Mac Pro and 2013 Macbook Pro and both systems take time to update this information with so much data buffering and being updated.
    My request:
The ability to update metadata across a site without the changes being executed until we applied the changes. For example, changing site view to a spreadsheet view with each pages information. Then, I could update a bunch of pages and hit enter, and walk away while it takes 5 minutes to update. This would also eliminate the hassle of requesting page properties from each page separately.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Bridge locks briefly when updating metadata on large PSD files

When updating metadata on a large PSD file, Bridge "locks" up for a brief period of time. This is apparently when it's rewriting that large PSD file to update the metadata. I'd like to be able to use Bridge in an uninterrupted fashion while metadata is updated in the background. This normally works for smaller files, just not on large PSD files. You can reproduce this easily by just adding a keyword to a couple 100MB PSD files.
    --John

    Chris,
How large are the PSD files? If they are over 400MB, I think I know what's wrong.
Bridge has a file-size preference, and won't process files that are larger than your setting. You'll find this preference on the Thumbnails panel in the Bridge Preferences dialog. The default is 400MB--try bumping it up to a size larger than your largest PSD and then purge the cache for the folder containing those PSDs.
If that does not work, I'd like to have a copy of one of the PSDs that is not working for you.

  • Get rid of update metadata arrow

How did I get rid of the arrow telling to me update metadata. I have write to xmp sidecar turned off, and I don't want to create sidecars, but LR is telling me the files need to be updated. All the metadata is in the db already. I don't need or want sidecars, but the arrows are driving me crazy.
If I go ahead and make the sidecar for any given file at issue, then go delete the xmp from disk, the arrow goes away and the caption is still there. It's idiotic.

I'll admit having experienced this "metadata needs updating" mystery prompt, and without other applications having been involved. I'm looking at a collection of 14 DNG files right now that happen to be temporarally "located" in the quick collection. 3 of these 14 are showing a flashing down-arrow, while the harddrive churns in unison. I thought I had previously seen a hover-notice that indicated "metadata needs to be updated", but that little notice isn't working this morning.
Choosing the option 'Metadata=>Save metadata to file' does not work -- however, choosing "Update DNG preview & metadata' does work. That said, I still have no reason for why only 3 of these 14 showed problems with metadata when nearly all 14 were similarly edited.
Hmmm(?) ... while I write, thinking I had removed the problem, mysteriously a number (~6) of them have begun flashing their arrow again. I selected all files and then chose to "Sync Metadata" and all is (just as mysteriously) quiet again. I understand "Sync metadata" makes all writable metadata in all files the same, but that was alright for these files.
Hmmm(?) look at that!! Another has begun flashing again, and now it's quit on it own. Geez Louise! This is a mystery I don't need, and I'll be keeping an eye on this topic.

  • Start Criteria Workflow by Update metadata

    Hi,
The criteria workflow starts by checkin the document. But I would like to start the criteria workflow by update metadata, no checkin.
Do you have a trick, how can I do it?
    Thanks
    Martin

    Hi again,
On second thought, you don't need filter at all (if you are curious, check the documentation that comes with Need to know component, in essence, there is a filter which triggers on each metadata change, and in binder you can work with old and new metadata values).
Here is the proposal of your WF:
    - Initial step - author holds the document, until metadata is changed.
    - In entry event of the initial step, you could call wfReleaseDocument(), in order for your doc to be indexed.
    - In update event of the initial step, you should query for the relevant metadata value and proceed to the next step only if it equals to "Comment process" or something like that.
However, if you want to enable author to create new revisions (through Check Out), I believe that standard WF functionality regards content as approved as soon as new revision is created. So, you should probably add one step between initial step and your Review steps (onwards) and get back content to initial step again, if metadata value is not "Comment process".

    Velimie

  • Updated metadata I didn't want to update

Many of my 20k images in my main Lightroom folder had an icon which indicated that there was a metadata conflict between disk and Lightroom.  I selected all the images and chose to update metadata in Lightroom's favor.  When I noticed that the files were being updated with all of the combined metadata from every file I stopped the task.  I have a backup from about 4 days before (unfortunately I had moved and deduplicated a number of files in between the last backup and this incident, although less than the number of files which are affected by this mistake).  I am wondering the best way to undo this mistake?

  • [SOLVED] After pacman glibc update, cannot find command bash?

A few days ago I ran into a problem after running pacman -Syu that ended up with an unbootable system.  I found this topic that ultimately solved the kernel panic-
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1127251
All that was needed was a symlink "/lib" to point to "/usr/lib"
My system now almost boots but luckily I can now get a to a shell (zsh).  The problem is that I can not run bash, and various other tools- including my desktop environment and pacman.
I have checked my $path, and have verified that I have the binary file "/usr/bin/bash" and a symlink in /bin/bash to point to that binary file, which does exist...
    % ls -l /bin/bash

    % ls -l /usr/bin/bash
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 738008 Mar 13 00:47 /usr/bin/bash
But when I try to start a bash shell or run a script
    % bash
    zsh: command not found: bash
    % pacman
    zsh: command not found: pacman
    % /usr/bin/bash
zsh: no such file or directory /usr/bin/bash
    % cat test.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    echo "Hello World"
    % ./test.sh
zsh: ./test.sh: bad interpreter: /bin/bash: no such file or directory
I hope i was thorough enough in providing information about my system, but please let me know if there's anything else I left out that may be able to help.
    Thanks so much!
[SOLVED]-  Ended up mounting my system from a live install cd, and copying over each bash binary in my system with the live media's binary.

If it has only been a few months, that thread should have nothing to do with what you are experiencing.  That problem stemmed from when the filesystem was actually changed from having /lib as an actual directory to /lib as a symlink to /usr/lib.  Oh the problems that caused.  For me it went perfectly smooth... well I did have to search for and rid /lib of extraneous unowned files, but it was smooth after that.
You say though that you did not have a /lib symlink when you checked, and then you created it?  This is odd, as that is part of the filesystem package and therefore a tracked file.  Maybe you should start by reinstalling the filesystem package just to make sure that the necessary components of the filesystem are all in order before proceeeding.
BTW, you should really update more often than every "few months" as that is what using a rolling release is all about.  Also if you don't update very often still, never update the database (-Sy) without also updating the system (-Syu) as this will lead to partial upgrades, which can severly break your system.  So never do "pacman -Sy <package>" as that is the equivalent of doing just a "pacman -Sy" and then continuing on your merry way.  Big changes are in the air right now around these parts, so keeping your system up to date is probably going to be crucial in making subsequent updates as pain free as possible (we are heading towards the final /bin -> /usr/bin move!).

  • Update Metadata in Elements 12

Is there a way to have the  metadata automatically update to the original file or do we have to manually do it all the time?

You need to convert the music into one of the formats supported by Elements:
Here's an article showing how to convert unprotected music in iTunes to WAV - http://www.aimersoft.com/itunes-drm/itunes-to-wav.html (methods 1 & 2 don't require the product they would like you to buy).

  • Maximum size of a single update metadata.

    Hi,
I have written a tool to parse WSUS update file, it parses a single update each time. But my tool takes a huge amount of memory for some updates, as they are large in size. For a update on windows8, the metadata size of a update is 18Mb. I wanted to know if
there some maximum size limit on the size of the metadata, for a single update.
    Thanks,
    Suraj

    Hi,
Based on one of the documents from SAP,
When you are creating dimensions for your application set you should be aware of the following maximums for any one dimension.
u2022 The maximum number of fields in a table (a dimension = 1 table) is 1024.
u2022 The maximum record size is 8064 bytes (a record = 1 row in a table)
The two maximums above relate to the underlying SQL database in which BPC information and data is stored. They need further explanation as to how they relate to a BPC dimension. In BPC a field equals a property. So you can have up to 1024 properties in a dimension. One other factor that has an impact on the actual number of properties you can have in a dimension is the number of levels you have defined. SQL Server creates a set of properties for each level within the dimension. For example, you have 10 properties and three levels in your dimension, your total number of fields is 30. The second limiting factor is the size of the record. To determine record size you have to figure out the number of bytes (a byte equals a character) in each level. Since levels are repeated you only need to figure out the number of bytes in the first level and then multiply that number by the number of levels. To come up with the total number of bytes for a level you simply add up the field size for each field and multiply it by 2 (1 character = 2 bytes).
Hope this gives you some idea.
