Updating N79 to V30

I'm having a problem updating my N79 to the new firmware, which is V30. I bought the phone from the middle east, and now I am in the US, and i called the Nokia Flagship store to see if they could update it for me, but they said they could not since it doesn't have a US warranty and it was international.
My problem with updating is:
I connect the phone to the computer, the Nokia software updater detects it, and it starts the update download. when it finishes downloading and comes to installing the updates on the n79, it fails and an error message comes up saying " for optimum connectivity connect the device directly to the computer" or something like that. And that's what I have done.
I tried to update it via FOTA, over the air because I have a Wi-Fi connection, when i search for updates it says none found, but I know there is an update greater than v20 which is v30. Please tell me what to do
And I am a little afraid of updating my phone, because i've heard of phone crashes and dead phones and all that stuff via Nokia software updater, and my phone has no warranty on it. So that's why i wanted to do the FOTA.
by the way this is the version:  Version: 20.175 RM-348 MEA

Alright first of all, I will never sell my N79. The reason I got it from the Middle East is because I wanted a Petrol Black N79. I called the Nokia Flagship store before i bought it to ask if there was a black n79, and they said that nokia doesn't ship that version to North America.
I don't know why you percieved that there was something wrong with my phone.. It's working perfectly and I came across no bug this week ( i bought it a week ago), and it was from an authorized Nokia dealer over there. But as I know, it is  better to have your device updated at all times.
Anyway I just wanted to know why it won't update and what are the risks, but the question is should I update it if i find a solution?
Considering there is no problem with the device, would you advise me to update or not? And do you think that when the time comes for the V30 update to be available at FOTA, is it safe with no risks to update my N79 over the air?
Thank you
PS: is it also very common for mistakes to happen during the update process, like the phone dieing? I previously bought an N73 from the Middle East, and updated it here, and it worked great after the update?

  • Disparity in software update - n79

When i try to update my n79 software/firmware through the nokia site at http://www.nokia-asia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-up... it says the latest available is Version:  11.049 which is wat i have installed. But when i try to do the same through the "Nokia software updater" tool by connecting the smartphone via USB it says something like "a newer version of the software is available"... i have googled and see that there have been various updations like 20.xxx 30.xxx and the latest being 31.xxx but then why is this information not being shown when i enter the product code in the above website. I'm afraid to proceed further in the Nokia software updater tool since there is this discrepancy of s/w or firmware upgrade. Moreover  i was advised by the nokia priority representative here in chennai, India that an update of the firmware is not absolutely necessary unless and until you get hangs/freezes on the OS. (In fact, when they at the nokia store connected my phone to their laptop and checked for any updates via the "same Nokia software updater" tool, it said that the version installed was the most recent one..! which is again the second discrepancy between my home pc and their's !!!
A bit of advice could help.. thanks!

there are two types of of variant software, one that is created for specific operator, one that is created for specific country or region, eg for some local need. It can just be that sometimes it takes a long time for the updates to get done for those versions also. Again a unique product code will apply.
If you check the software version from *#0000#, easiest way to check is to look at the "custom version" and check the last number field, if that number is larger than say 40 then there is a good chance that it is one of these changed versions.
Thing to do is to complain to your nokia care point, probably on the help line and ask why you have not had a sw update for 6 months or more.

  • Problem in updating N79

    I just got N79 of T Mobile.
When I tried to update its firmvare its ask for server profile. Please tell me what to do now?

    Hi taimoor24s,
Thank you for your post and welcome to the forums!
I assume you've tried to update the phone over the air.
The simple solution is to try updating your phone over WLAN or using Nokia Suite.
If the problem persists, we would recommend that you either contact your operator and ask them if they allow updates on this device or visit the nearest Nokia Care Point and ask if they can do the update for you.
Let us know if this helps,

  • Error updating 5800 to V30

It's been 2 days now that I am trying to update my 5800 to V30 but I can't , after I check for updates I see the new FW to be available but after I accept to download and install it shows an error " Error occurred. Software update must be restarted." and it happens all the times. I don't know what could be wrong with my phone.
BTW I did the *#7370# trick already.

OTA does not require a fast internet connection. This is nonsense. It's designed to work even using GPRS, which is why the download size is significantly smaller.
NSU will be of no help because V30 is only available by FOTA.
There are many potential reasons why a FOTA update could fail, the most likely of which being a problem with the method you're using to connect the phone to the intrernet. If you're using packet data then try over a WLAN - or vice-versa.
Second on the list I'd suggest that there's not enough free memory on your phone's C: drive to store the patches and have enough room to work in. Uninstall a few applications and/or themes and get rid of some messages to free up space on C:.
If none of these work then your best bet is to take the phone into a Nokia Care Point and ask them to do the update. They have methods at their disposal that we members of the general public don't.
As mentioned by post007, always back up your sensitive data before a firmware update. The 5800 has User Data Preservation and you should therefore not lose any data, but better to be safe than sorry.

  • Issues in updating N79

    Hi Guys ,
I have nokia n79 FW : 31.002 , when i;m trying to update it via the nokia software updater this error occurs : "For optimum connectivity your USB cable should be connected directly to the PC, and not via USB hub, USB keyboard or laptop docking station"  i tried to update the usd drivers as mentioned in the forum here but didnt work too , i reinstalled the nokia software updater but not working too , so what's the soultion? , and what if i wanna to update from the mobile itself , i once saw this option in the mobile but i cant find it now ,anyway is there a way to update my FW ?
    Thanks
    Sherif

Type *#0000# at the stand-by screen. Go to Options -> Check for updates. If the updates are released OTA, you will be prompted to download and install. You would require a working Wireless network or a Data plan in order to do OTA update.
If you don't get any updates, then try the NSU method. This time, use another port of the PC.
    Cheers,

  • N86- cannot update firmware to v30

    i keep receive this message.
installation failed. the connection to the device was lost. make sure the USB cable is connected directly to the computer and try installation again. if your device does not start, try recovering the device by following the instructions in the nokia ovi suit help.

When a new device update is available, the software update is downloaded to your computer automatically. You can use Nokia Ovi Suite normally while the download is ongoing. From Tools > Options > General you can define whether you want automatic downloads to take place.
    Note:
You need to have an active internet connection for Nokia Ovi Suite to be able to download the software updates to your computer, as well as install the updates on your device.
If you are connected with a modem, the automatic download is not active by default. You can still download the software updates manually. Take into account that this might cause higher data transfer costs.
Good to know about installing the device software updates
To be able to install device software updates, you need to be signed in to your Nokia account. To sign in, or if you do not have a Nokia account yet, click Sign into Ovi in the Nokia Ovi Suite top navigation bar.
If your device is connected via Bluetooth, switch the connection to a USB cable.
If you have encrypted your memory card, decrypt it prior to updating your device software. If you do not decrypt the memory card, it cannot be accessed anymore after the update has been installed. After decrypting the memory card, you can update your device software normally.
When the opportunity to make a backup comes during the wizard, it is recommended that you make the backup to minimise the possibility of losing any important data. Content such as your contacts, calendar and messages are always included in the backup
    Note:
If you have any device applications you have installed yourself, such as games, it is very advisable to make a backup of your device content, because the applications might not work after the update.
You cannot cancel the software installation once it begins. Note that if the phone recovery window opens during the device software installation, do not try closing it but follow the on-screen instructions.
    Warning!
Do not disconnect your device during the installation in order to avoid loss of information and device malfunctions!
After the installation of the software update is complete, the wizard proceeds to the restoration of the device content. Here the possible scenarios are:
If you made a backup earlier during the wizard, the content of that backup file is automatically restored to your device.
If you did not make a backup during the wizard, but you have older backup files on your computer, you can restore the content of one of those. In this case you can choose which backup file to use.

  • Will N97 mini get new firmware updates in 2012?

Hi I am nokia fans. Still I am so hope that new update firmware will be release for n97 mini owners. Since 5800 and 5230 get new updates at October 2011. When n97mini will taste new firmware update again?

v30 was released at the end of June 2011. Don't expect another update anytime soon. I went from V12 to V30 and it's a trade-off in features. The new browser is an overall improvement, but the email client no longer gives you the flashing notification option. Free RAM drops 5 MB's on my phone. The Smart Dial and Emoticons are subjective as features. One thing I do like is that the phone stays in portrait view when closing the keyboard.

  • N95-1 V30 Bugs & Issues

Let's discuss the bugs and issues with the new V30 firmware.
What I don't like about V30 are that
1- when the N95 starts, the standby screen goes blank for less than a second for once.
2- There are now too many applications installed on the phone (if you check the Application Manager you will see the list) occupying the memory.
3- Also after updating from V21, V30 crashed when using bluetooth. Seemed like it had problems with bluetooth. The crash was bad that you could only restart the phone by taking out the battery. After 3 re-installs now the bluetooth works fine.

Did anyone see any difference at the Sound ?
The sound at the music player seems lower quality now.
I have tried to restore to defaults and change the equalizer settings again but the sound is just Cr@ppy.
Its seems like the sound is being compressed, especially in the high volume and even more at the bass parts as expected.
Its like the sound is being struggled, more mid and some high but not real voice and clarity.
It reminds me some cheap Chinese mp3 player.
I had the V23 and the sound was crystal clear and
    balanced.
If this is the price that I have to pay for some more minutes of music as the Nokia say for this Upgrade then I prefer to hear the half and have some descent quality.
I just hope that they ll fix this in some newer version and that they are not doing this just to make the Music versions look better in sound.

Although any user data would be erased could only suggest that you try resetting device by keying in *#7370# followed by 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by user) and try option to re-install existing device software within Nokia Suite > Tools > Software updates upon PC.
