Upgrade FCS2 Academic to FCS3 Academic

MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel 4GB RAM. OS 10.5.8. Just tried to upgrade twice, following prompts to load discs as presented. Custom install as presented. After 'Successful Installation' computer runs dead slow. 10-20 seconds to get a response when clicking on a menu or disclosure triangle. After minutes, program opens. Video will not play. Takes many seconds to get the playhead to move on the timeline.
Tried different startups: other programs on the computer operate normally until any FCS3 program is opened, then everything bogs down dead slow. Can anyone tell me what I have done wrong with my install? Thanks.

Hi Tom - the non-upgradable part about the academic version has been a bit of a source of confusion to me. When I inserted discs screen information indicated that programs would be 'upgraded' and so I assumed it would work. I will run FCS remover and try again - I am certain your answer holds the key and I thank you for your quick response.

  • How can I tell the difference between Academic and non-academic version

I would like to purchase Logic Express on Ebay. The Apple part number is
    MA338Z/A
How can I tell if this is the Academic or non-academic version?
    THanks

ok, but there is no way to tell from the Apple part #?
I thought that the /A might mean Academic but it seems this same part number applies to the non-academic version:
    MA338Z/A
    Thanks

  • Upgrade path for 5.1 Academic to Retail??

    Hi,
I purchased the academic version of 5.1 studio back in October. I'd like be able to upgrade to the new studio 6 when
it comes out. My understanding is that the 49.00 crossgrade will convert an academic 5.0 pro license to a retail 5.1 version. Does anyone know if I'm eligible for the same upgrade if I send in my academic 5.1 license? The version isn't listed at the bottom of the form, but I'm going to be very angry if owners of older academic versions can upgrade to a new retail version while I have a 6 month old academic license I can't upgrade.
    Thanks.

well serf, prepare to be very angry.
your understanding of the 49 dollar academic crossgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 is wrong, you will get 5.1 universal binary discs but you will use your academic serial number.
regarding upgrades to version 6, no one here knows as it's not out yet and speculating it's release is for the rumor sites and against the terms of usage apple stipulates to use these fora.

  • Can't upgrade to CC from CS6 Academic version

Currently I am using CS6, which I bought as an academic package in Japan.
And I'm trying to upgrade from CS6 to CC, using complete discount plan since I have CS6.
I tried to upgrade but the serial number wasn't recognized. Is it because mine is academic version?

  • Upgrade FCS2 to FCS

I'm about to upgrade my system from FCS2 to the FCS with the Final Cut Studio Upgrade package.
Before the upgrade I will install Snow Leopard so it will be a clean install with all existing applications being reinstalled.
Do I need to register my existing FCS2 first in order to do the upgrade?

Do I need to register my existing FCS2 first in order to do the upgrade?
No. All you need is to have its serial nnumber handy.
When you install the new version, enter the serial number that came with it.
You will then be prompted that your serial number is an upgrade and that you have to now enter the number from the full price retail copy of FCS 2.

  • Invalid serial number upgrading FCS2

    Hello!
If I want to transfer a project from my laptop (MacBookPro) using the 6.0.6 version of FCP to my computer (PowerMac G5) using the 6.0.1 version, the latter says "the format file is too recent for this application's version" and doesn't open it.
But when I enter the original serial number (correctly, there is no doubt) of the FCS2 that I purchased to update it on my PowerMac through the website of Apple, it says that it is invalid!
What should I do, knowing that the delay for a helpline has expired and that I didn't find any kind of a clue in this forum or other ???
Thank you very much for your answer indeed.

When is it during the process of opening the project file do you get a message that you need to enter your serial number?
Have you tried running Software Update on the G5 to bring it up to the same version as your laptop?

  • I'm trying to upgrade 9.0 academic version to 9.1.7 to use on a new MacBook pro.  When I try to do incremental upgrades to 9.0.1 or 9.0. it says I don't need them.  When I try to upgrade to 9.1.7 it says there is no version eligible to upgrade.

I'm trying to upgrade Logoc Pro 9.0 academic version to 9.1.7 to use on a new MacBook pro.  When I try to do incremental upgrades to 9.0.1 or 9.0.2 it says I don't need them.  When I try to upgrade to 9.1.7 it says there is no version eligible to upgrade. This all on the older MacBook currentlu running 9.0.  But I need to upgrade to 9.1.7 to transfer it over tp the new MacBook w/ Retina display.

I think I just got it.  I had the actual Logic Pro.app in a folder called Logic Pro inside the applications folder.  When I moved the actual app out of the folder and into applications it worked.  I am in the process of updating now.  However it seems a little strange because that's how it installed from the discs - into a folder named Logic Pro within the applications folder.  I would never have figured that out on my own.  So thanks for those who posted solutions to other users similar requests.

  • Client wants to upgrade his 'academic' version?

Client wants to upgrade his FCP Studio 5.1.4 to 7.x, but he's got an Academic version.  Which Apple Store says they don't upgrade.  Does this mean he has to buy a complete new Academic version?
My assumption is yes.  But I'm always wary of my assumptions.  I'm going to see if I can find the 'Academic' price listed somewhere...

Ya know... here is what it says in the license agreement... (though this is from the apple's website's list of EULAs and not specifically from a EULA from any Academic version you may have bought (the apple website says that too)) -- (wow!  that was small!!)
http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/finalcutstudio2.pdf  Do a Command-F and search for academic... comes up 9 times the three below and again in two other languages.  Does anyone really know where it says you CAN'T upgrade academic versions??  Even if you still fall under the academic umbrella?
Academic Copies: If the Apple Software package has an academic label or if you acquired the Apple Software at an academic discount, you must be an Eligible Educational End User to use the Apple Software. "Eligible Educational End Users" means students, faculty, staff and administration attending and/or working at an educational institutional facility (i.e., college campus, public or private K-12 schools).

  • Upgrading Final Cut Academic to 7

Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade my Final Cut Studio "Academic" to a version that's not Final Cut X? I'd like to upgrade it to 7 if possible..

One of the main things about FCP Academic is that they are "non-upgradable." YOu get them cheap and the tradeoff is that you cannot get the upgrade pricing on future versions.
That being said...sorry to say that FCP 7 is no longer available for sale new.  It's been gone from the shelves for over a year.  A few places sold what they had...and Apple sold a few copies to Enterprise clients up to a few months ago.  But it is gone now.  Gone gone gone.  The only place to get FCP 7 is eBay or Craigslist.  And they don't do upgrade pricing.
What version of FCP Academic do you have?

  • Is the academic version of Adobe Photoshop the same as the regular version?

I'm a college student and I really want Adobe Photoshop. I'd much rather pay $300 for the academic version than pay $1000. But is the academic version the same as the regular version?

I just browsed the Adobe forums to see what information was being given there, since CS3 has just come out. It appears that the policy I remember (I upgraded from the academic versions of Photoshop 3 and After Effects 3.1, so it's been a while) is still in effect.
Basically, a qualifying student can either purchase a new academic product, or purchase the commercial upgrade. There are no academic "upgrades", per se.
It may actually be cheaper for a student to re-purchase the full academic copy than to purchase the commercial upgrade. Someone who no longer qualifies as a student needs to purchase the commercial upgrade, of course.

  • No up-to-date for Academic - why?

Can anyone explain why I have to buy a full version of 2.0 when I just bought the academic version of 1.5 in January? The up-to-date for $9.95 deal was denied by Apple, and now I am reading in numerous other posts that the $99 upgrade will not work on academic licenses either. I regret that I cannot go back in time (for many reasons, not just Aperture-related), but if I had known that I could have saved money by buying the full version of a soon-to-be obsolete piece of software, I would have paid the extra hundred then and been able to upgrade for 9.95 instead of $70 - $100!

The academic version is not eligible for upgrade - this is not new. When Aperture first came out at about $300 - $149 for the academic version was a smokin' deal. I figured then when the next version came out I would still be ahead (since I figured to still be eligible for the educational version) - $149 + 149 = $298 as opposed to $299 + 99 = $398.
For someone just starting with version 2 - the $20 savings for the academic version ONLY makes sense if you plan to never upgrade, unless you can get the academic version for considerably less at your local campus computer store - which is often the case.

  • Logic Pro 7 Academic Productions

With LP7 academic, am I able to sell what is created with the software? If not, how can you tell if it was created with LP7 academic or not?
    Papic

    Or 7.3
As you point out, Apple is very loose with their terminology. Upgrades are not available for academic versions, but updates are. Remember, it cost money to go from 7.1 to 7.2 (a cross-grade). Maybe an upgrade involves the change in the first number after the decimal point and an update involves any numbers past that. Who knows.
We'll just have to wait and see what Apple considers to be an upgrade (as opposed to update or ???).

  • Upgrading FCS3 and Snow Leopard...

I have purchased upgrades to Snow Leopard (from 10.5) and FCS3 (upgrade from FCS1). I have two computers that I need to do this on. Any ideas on how to approach this? Should I upgrade FCS3 first and make sure it's stable or load Snow Leopard and get it going? Any anecdotal stories would be great.

Read all of Nick's linked thread.
If in doubt about the need to do this, search the forum for issues related to upgrading OSX and/or FCS3 without a clean install. Entertaining reading.

  • Upgrade and invalid serial number

I am trying to upgrade FCS to FCS2. Both are academic versions. It keeps telling me that the serial number on FCS is invalid. A search brought up that FCP5 cannot be upgraded to FCP6 in the academic version. Is the same true for FCS?

After calling Apple and being transfered eight different times, I was told that I could not return the upgrade for a full version because it had been more than two weeks since I had ordered it. I didn't try installing it because I was in the middle of a large project and didn't want any problems. After explaining that I had just thrown $500 away, the person spoke to his supervisor and allowed me to return the upgrade. David S. was correct in that the academic version cannot be upgraded. However, I don't see this mentioned anywhere in the Apple store for education. I thought I had done this when I switch from FCP2 to FCP3, but that's been awhile back so maybe I'm wrong.
