Upgrade on a family plan

My husband and I currently have five lines on our account. We are still under the Nationwide 700 talk and text plan. My line is the only line that is a smartphone or that has any data, all of the other lines are basic phones. I'm thinking about upgrading one of the basic lines to a smartphone but my question is, will it throw us into the more everything plan? We currently pay $30 for 2GB of data. Would it be another $30 for another 2GB of data or no? Thanks for any assistance with this.

you can stay on your current plan.  however it iwll add another 30 dollar data package to that line.   you would have to do the math to see if it is worth switching to more everything.    typically when you have a bunch of basic phones and only a coupel smartphones it is cheaper to stay on old plans,  however if you have more smartphones than dbasic neew plans are generally cheaper.

  • Upgrade with a family plan

just have a quick question, I am in a family plan with my parents and brother, and I was wondering can i upgrade to the new iphone 4s if it hasnt been 2 years yet? my mom is the primary holder of the account. i have the iphone 4 now and would like the new iphone.
I do not want to transfer upgrade eligibility from other numbers. just wondering if it can be done if i renew my contract for another 2 yrs within the family plan.
    Thanks

i understand they want full price, but i would surely pay $199 for the phone now, having them make that off me. Instead i choose to not get it and they loose out on an easy $199 from me and i am sure many other people as well. i am very sure there are thousands of peope out there who would pay the $199 for the phone, but knowing they have to pay full price they opt out of spending any money at all. so in the end Verizon looses out , and i would say they loose out pretty big or the number of people who are choosing to not pay full price for the phone.
OK, so the retail price of the phone is $649. Lets say that Verizon has a 100% markup on the phone from what they pay for it. That means that they pay $325 for the phone, turn around and give it to you for $199. That is a LOSS of $125? How is that good business sense.
You may say "but I am signing up for a 2yr contract". In fact, you are already in a 2yr contract. Additionally, if you have the iPhone 4, that means furthest back you could have upgraded is in Feb of 2011, which is 8 months ago. In this best case scenario, you are only extending your current contract by 8 months, not 2 years.
Either wait until you are eligible for an upgrade, use someone else's upgrade or pay full price. Verizon is not going to let you upgrade this early, nor does it make sense for them to allow you to upgrade this early.

  • Using upgrade from another family plan

My family has 2 family plans. 1 with 4 phones and 1 with 3 phones. All under same account person. Although, 2 seperate bills. Question, can i use a upgrade from one of the numbers on the plan that I am NOT on?

Probably not directly.  The easiest way would be to just upgrade that line normally with your choice of phone, and then activate it on the line that used the upgrade briefly.  After that, they have accepted the new contract and can swap back to their old phone, freeing the new device to be activated on any Verizon line.

  • If I use a family member's upgrade in the family plan, will they lose their unlimited data?

Hi there. So since my birthday is next week, and I'm on a family plan with my parents and 2 brothers, they're letting me use someone's upgrade to get the iPhone 5 since my upgrade isn't due until November. The upgrade that's available now is my older brother's. He is so paranoid that if I use his upgrade, he'll lose his unlimited data. Is this true? I know that I'll lose mine, which is fine, but he does a lot of stuff with his iPhone and doesn't want to lose it yet. So if I use his upgrade, will we both lose the unlimited data or just me?

Actually the way I understand it, your brother will lose his unlimited data but you will retain yours.
Because the upgrade is coming from his line, that line of service must select a tiered data plan.
Your line is, in effect not changing (you will just be activating a different phone) so the data plan is not affected.
Hope this clears it up for you.
    Good luck & Happy Birthday

  • Not Allowed to upgrade to Family Plan and get Iphone?

I have a single line right now, and I attempted to go through my account and "upgrade to a family plan," but when I get to the page where you select the new phone for your second line.  The Iphone is nowhere to be found!  It allows me to process any other phone with the upgrade to a Family Plan, except the Iphone.  When you click the link on the front page to "buy it" it takes you to a whole new set up that only allows you to add an additional line, but no option to add it to a family plan.  Is verizon not allowing upgrades to family plans and adding a line with the Iphone?  Or will I have to brave the store lines to get this done?

I would go to a store, I think it's just where they have the iphone in a link by itself right now instead of with all the other phones, I would almost be sure you can do this in store without a problem at all. Some people are saying there are actually no lines at stores they've been at so you may get lucky and not have a line at your local verizon store.

  • Upgrading Multiple Phones on a Family Plan

I have been reading through posts on these forums and have yet to find a concrete answer to my situation. My wife and I have the nationwide family talk 700 plan and she is the primary number. When I login to our account online, it says that we only have 3 months left in our contract (up on 3/14/2011). When I click on upgrade it says her phone can be upgraded now at a discounted rate, but not my phone. We both want to get a Droid and add a data plan, however I would like to get the Droid R2D2 phone soon before they stop selling it as it is listed as a "limited edition" model. So if I were to use her line to get the phone now and activate it with my number, would she still be eligible to upgrade her phone on 3/14/2011? It is a little confusing to me that her phone is upgradeable now, but mine is not. Can someone verify my thought process here and let me know if what I am wanting to do is feasible? Also please point out any caveats with this process that I failed to realize. I understand that I will also need to add an additional data plan to our bill for each smart phone we activate. Perhaps this R2D2 phone will still be around in March and I should just wait to upgrade both at the same time??

The primary line is eligible at 12 months fro an annual upgrade - you can get a new phone at the two yr contract price, a $20 upgrade fee, and no NE@ discount is given, and the primary line's contract is extended two years.

It is a little confusing to me that her phone is upgradeable now, but mine is not. As explained above, the primary line is eligible for an ANNUAL upgrade, if the base plan is $49.99 or more - there is an additional $20 fee and the NE2 discount is forfeited till the next go round.

  • Upgrade to iphone - downgrade part of family plan

I am currently under my parents family plan. Our contract ends in November 2011. I would like to get the iphone soon. My father would like to downgrade his plan to something with less minutes. I would like to keep the same plan i currently have with my blackberry but would like to upgrade to the iphone. Would i have to wait until the contract ends to make all these changes? if not then will there be any charges beside the fee for the new phone itself?

You can change your calling plan at any time, it will not affect your upgrade eligibility or contract. There will be no extra charges for changing your plan. If you and your father are on the same account (I'm assuming you are) when he changes the minutes, just remember that your line will have fewer minutes to use as well, as they are shared among all lines on the account.

  • Upgrade non-smartphone line to iPhone 4S and then transfer to different phone line on family plan

I am on a family plan where I have a smart phone and my father and mother have normal non-data phones.
My line is not due for an upgrade until June 2012.
A verizon rep told me that I could use my father's upgrade to pre-order and activate an iPhone 4S and then re-activate my father's non-smartphone on his phone # and activate the iPhone 4S on my own phone #.
Once activated on his phone number they will add the Data plan; but once I reactivate his old non-data phone I will no longer need the data plan.
Will this work? I'm not sure the rep I spoke to understood that my father has a non-data phone when she explained this procedure.

If you have an online account with Verizon Wireless, you can transfer the upgrade from one number on your account to another number on your account (for example, transfer the upgrade from your father's phone to your phone).
Sign on to verizonwireless.com. Log in with your user ID and password. Click on My Verizon, and select Upgrade Device. Below each phone on your account, there will be an upgrade device date, and a link to Transfer Upgrade. Click the link and it will ask you which line you want to transfer from, and you can transfer the upgrade to your phone. You won't need to switch the data plan on your father's phone at all.
I just did the same thing on my account to be ready for the new phone tomorrow. Hope this helps!

  • Using an available upgrade from another family member on my plan???

    Hello all,
I want to upgrade my 3G to the 3GS. I have an AT&T Family Plan. My wife's V1 iPhone account is upgrade available now.
I want to give her my 3G and use her upgrade on my new 3GS......
I was hoping to just upgrade her phone, then later swap SIM cards to get our phone numbers straight. Ive done this with other phones in the past, but I think that iPhone is SIM specific......
How should I try to make this happen without confusion. I don't want to overwhelm the local AT&T store salesman.
    Your advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Donald

I have been able to switch iPhones with someone on my family plan, trading 3G for 2G. I also want to buy 3GS using one line that is eligible for upgrade and then trade phones so I get the new one. I was planning to activate it from home on the eligible line, then backup, swap sims, then restore. This is procedure I had used before and worked swapping 3G and 2G phones. I think as long as they really want to get you for a 2 year contract, so may not matter what phone you have, as long as you also pay the new $30 data charge.

  • Upgrade using another phone on my family plan

I have a family plan. One of my regular non data phones is eligible for an upgrade, but my Iphone 3G is not. Can I go to ATT and sign a new 2 year contact on the non data phone and upgrade my 3G to a 3GS? I don't want a data plan on the other phone, I want to keep it the same as it is.

While i dont have the other phone in my posession at this time. your response did click in my brain to check options under messages in my settings. At this time i turned anything on there off and changed my passcode in case this was not a accident..i'll see what happens and update my findings.

  • Family Plan Upgrade to New Phones/Activation

    Hi,
My mom is the primary line for our family plan. We have 3 other lines besides hers in the plan. All the phonelines are eligible for upgrades right now, but my mom's line has an extra $50 dollars off upgrade discount.
My question is, if my mom's line is upgraded to a certain phone, does that certain phone have to be activated using her phone number, or could I activate her phone and use it with my phone number?
Reason being is, she doesn't want a fancy phone but her line has nicer phones to upgrade to since she has the $50 discount. I was wondering if she could upgrade to that phone, but then if I could activate it using my phone number (so in effect the phone would actually be mine without my phone number having to change)?
    Thanks,
    MM
Oh I was also wondering, when it says "Data Pack required" for a phone that I want to upgrade to, do I have to get a data pack in order to upgrade to the phone or get one after upgrading to the phone? Can I just upgrade to the phone without using data or getting a data pack?

My question is, if my mom's line is upgraded to a certain phone, does that certain phone have to be activated using her phone number, or could I activate her phone and use it with my phone number?  Yes, you can do this.  If you order in-store or over the phone, just explain what you want to do to the rep and they will take care of it.  If you order online, have your Mom click on the "transfer upgrade" button next to her line and that will start the process.

Note that any phone that is eligible to upgrade can purchase any of the phones that Verizon currently offers at the 1 or 2 year contract price.  The only difference in what is available to your Mom's line is the $50 credit ON TOP of the reduced contract price.
    Thanks,

You must have a data package active on the line that the phone is active on at all times.  When you activate the phone on any line, you will be automatically prompted to select an appropriate data package,

  • I have purchased a new iPhone on an upgrade from one of my family plan numbers, how do I activate it to use with another number on my account

I purchased a new iPhone through upgrading one of the phones on my att family plan. when I receive the phone how do i switch it to another phone number on my plan I want to use it with?

I have a friend who does this every year. He just brings both phones into his AT&T store and they swap the numbers for him. Pretty painless process, as long as they are not too busy (i.e. iPhone lauch day)

  • Why is that when I changed my plan to a family plan, it pushed my device upgrade back another full year?

In November of last year, I added my mother to my plan and it changed us to a family plan. Judging by from when I bought my device, I should have an upgrade this March, but since we changed the plan, my device upgrade was pushed back until March 2015? Why is this?

I'm not sure when Verizon discontinued early upgrades at 20 months, but I believe that it may have been in April of 2013. Regardless, if you upgraded at a discount in March of 2013, the EARLIEST your upgrade eligibility date could have been would be November of 2014, NOT early to mid 2014. I can't see ANY way that you would possibly have had an upgrade eligibility date of early to mid 2014. Additionally, when Verizon discontinued early upgrades, it happened all at once so any contracts signed on or after January 1, 2012 were automatically switched to the end of the 2yr contract which was signed. As I said before, this switch was made in April 2013, I believe, so your eligibility date would have been changed at that time, not when you added a new line.
Is it possible that you had mistaken early to mid 2014 when it was originally November of 2014 for your original upgrade date and that was switched to March of 2015 when early upgrades were discontinued in April of 2014? That seems to be a more likely scenario.

  • Question about upgrading a phone on a family plan

I have four phones on a family plan, 3 smart phones and 1 basic phone for my elderly father.
The first three phones (including mine) are still under contract until 12/13.  The basic phone
is eligible for an upgrade.  I would like to use that upgrade to get a new phone for myself but
keep the basic line for my father.  Can I use that upgrade to get another phone and move it
to my number and keep the 4th line as a basic line without data for my father?

Yes you can do that. In fact if you log into your account it gives you the option to switch upgrades. Just so you know even though you are using his upgrade HIS contract will be the one getting extended not yours.

  • Any benefit to combining Family plan through AOL prior to upgrading phones?

My wife and I are looking at upgrading to the new iphones. We are both eligible, and are not grandfathered into unlimited data. We currently are the only 2 people on our family plan, but also are talking with other family members about combining their lines with ours through AOL (acceptance of liability).
    My question is:
Is there any reason we need to figure out the AOL combinations *prior* to us ordering our iphones?
From the limited amount of time I've read on the AOL option tonight, it seems that when you bring in different lines from different family plans together into 1 combined plan, that each line retains its own original contract expiration/upgrade elibility date. Is that correct?
If we upgrade our phones then:
    A) bring other family members (currently locked into their own 2 yr contract) into OUR plan
    OR
    B) have our family members (currently locked into their own 2 yr contract) bring us into THEIR plan
Either way, do we have to figure out A vs. B prior to the wifey and I just ordering the iphones while it's still just the 2 of us on our family plan?
    Much thanks in advance!

Ok, well shoot. Ordered last night as got too excited and couldn't think of any issues.
Guess we're limited then to option A I mentioned earlier. (Keeping our existing account, and bringing in others family members' lines to our account -- would affect their warranty then I take it).
