Upgrade this 2005 PowerBook or fork out for MacBook?

This is a refinement of an earlier Q.
My problems/desires are:
1. I'm fed up with being unable to avail myself of stuff that needs Tiger/Leopard.
2. My 80GB internal HD is constantly filling up.
3. I have no webcam and need (a good) one for work.
4. My G4 gets taxed by certain things, e.g. trimming clips in QuickTime.
5. My 160GB Freecom external drive for file backup isn't adequately powered by the G4 and needs an inconvenient mains powered hub.
All the above (not sure about 5.) would be fixed by getting a new/refurb MacBook (Pro), but cash is tight. So I'm considering this:
1. Buy Leopard.
2. Buy & install 2GB of RAM.
3. Buy & install 250GB internal drive.
4. Buy an iSight or something cheaper that's as good.
5. (recommended by an expert here) Buy another, bootable external drive to do a total system backup while I install Leopard (and for common sense protection thereafter).
All of that costs a fair chunk of the price of say a refurbished MB Pro, and is more trouble. Any comments? Specific Qs:
1. Macupgrades.co.uk advises against installing an internal HD, but could I do it? (I put one into a titanium G4 a while back.)
2. Any recommendations for a 250GB HD?
3. Any recommendations for good webcams cheaper than iSight?
4. Any recommendations for external drives that will be adequately powered by my PowerBook?
5. Would I regret doing all of this in a year's time because of my G4's ageing? E.g. the screen is still fine, but is it likely to deteriorate?
Many thanks for reading and replying.

1. Macupgrades.co.uk advises against installing an internal HD, but could I do it? (I put one into a titanium G4 a while back.)
Yes.
2. Any recommendations for a 250GB HD?
There's only one on the market that you can use:
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD2500BEVE/
It may be available elsewhere for up to $10 less.
3. Any recommendations for good webcams cheaper than iSight?
Nope — I don't know the first thing about 'em.
4. Any recommendations for external drives that will be adequately powered by my PowerBook?
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MS4U7250GB16/
Connect it via FireWire, not USB.
5. Would I regret doing all of this in a year's time because of my G4's ageing? E.g. the screen is still fine, but is it likely to deteriorate?
It has already deteriorated, as you'd see if you could compare it side-by-side with the way it used to look. That deterioration will continue. How long you'll continue to be happy with it, I can't guess.
To $230 for the two drives, add $100 for 2GB RAM, $130 for Leopard, and something more for a webcam. That's probably at least $500 invested in a 3-year-old Powerbook. It may keep you happy for another couple of years, or it may not. You'll have to decide whether that's preferable to spending 2x-3.5X as much for a refurbed MacBook or MacBook Pro, with a year's warranty and the assurance that it will run the next version of OSX.

  • I have Photoshop 5.0 Limited Edition.  Can I upgrade this to a more current version for free? If so, how?

    Hi
I have loaded photoshop version 5 onto my computer in order to view a psd file, but the file is from a more up to date version and contains incompatible material.  Can I update the version 5 copy I have to a more current version so the file would work?
Would this just be a question of downloading something online or would I have to pay to upgrade?
I did try to look at the adobe upgrade section but it all seemed meant for more current versions than mine
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Are you being serious?
What you can do is avail yourself of the free 30 day trial period of a more current version, though.

  • POWERBOOK DIED WHILE OUT FOR A SMOKE!! HELP

Yes I know, smoking is a bad habit but when I went out my MacBook was up and running fine. I had various windows opened through the spaces features. This MacBook is the 2Ghz Core Duo with 100G HD & 1G Ram. When I came back in the MacBook was dead. Despite it being fully charged and plugged into a working surge protector. There is no lite on the magnetic power cord to the MacBook., I can't wake it up nor can I do a force restart , ctrl, apple key & power button at the same time. Screen deep black, no grayish or any other color/icons etc., Just completely dead. I've replugged it into other outlets with no luck. Took the battery out and put it back in again. nothing works. any ideas as to what may have happened? or a particular set of keys to press to turn it back on? thanks,

If you press the button on the battery, do the lights glow?
If the MagSafe adapter won't even light up, you may be looking at some kind of hardware failure inside the computer. Your best bet is to bring it to an Apple store and have the folks there take a look.

  • Using 02/03 PowerBook as supplementary display for MacBook Pro (original)

A friend recently mentioned that i might be able to use my old powerbook as a supplementary display for the newest addition to my Mac family.
can anyone tell me if this is true and if so, how to do it?
Also, i signed up to this site before i upgraded and i have tried changing my profile to reflect the upgrade, but when i post, i still have to change the model and OS fields under the message field... Why is this so?

Wow! this is hectic! thanks for that. but i have a follow up question, i notice it has a limited life for free. how long will the free version last? i am prepareed to pay for it, but as i am a student, cant just yet, i probably need until about December and i'll be right, will it last that long?
also, about the 'model' and 'OS' fields? can they be updated centrally, or do i have to keep changing it every time i ask/answer a question?

  • RAM from Powerbook vs. RAM for MacBook

Because Apple could not repair my Powerbook 17-inch, they replaced it with a new MacBook Pro. Now I have 2 GB of RAM I had installed in the Powerbook that I'd like to sell or trade for additional RAM for the MacBook. (I assume that the PC2-4200 from the Powerbook is not compatible with the MacBook -- please advise if that's incorrect.) How do I get some value out of the practically brand-new RAM from the Powerbook (which cost me $310 new in 11/2005)? I assume that the best way to get an additional 1 GB of RAM into the the new MacBook is simply to buy the appropriate RAM chip and install it -- but I'd appreciate any suggestions on that too.

You're correct,The PowerBook RAM is not compatible with the MBP.
As far as selling the old RAM,Ebay is an option.
Although I seriously doubt you'll get anywhere near what you payed for it.
For new RAM,I use and reccommend OWC... http://macsales.com

  • A new update is out for Macbook pro retina but my laptop says no updates available??

Please advise as to how I can get the new update for wifi on my Macbook Pro Retina 13".  My laptop says I'm up to date and no updates are available but I did not get this new update that was released just a few days ago?  Please advise????

Before applying any update, backup your data at least twice:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Next check if you can download the update from http://support.apple.com/downloads/?val=MacBook+Pro#?val=macbook pro.  If it isn't there, then it probably doesn't apply to your machine.  Double check with the local authorized service center that it is necessary.

  • More GB for Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I bought a 15" Macbook Pro 120GB last month from
Apple.com. I do a lot of video editing and wanted to
upgrade my memory to 200GB. I am under Apple's
Warranty, however I am afraid of buying more GB and
installing it on my Macbook Pro myself. Is there a
way I can have Apple mail me a shipper box and send it
back to Apple to upgrade the GB? I am willing to pay
extra for the sake of having a certified Apple
employee do the install. Has anyone had this
experience or could offer me any advice on this topic?
    Thanks!!

I just had my MacBook Pro Hard-drive upgraded. As best as I could find out, for MacBook Pro's, you need to have an Authorized Apple Service Center perform the upgrade. According to them, the rest of the MBP is sill covered by AppleCare, but the new drive is not.
If you do the upgrade yourself, you WILL break your entire warranty.
I paid $130 for the labor, and my local Mac Repair Site did it the same day. I bought a Hitachi Travelstar 250GByte drive from ZipZoomFly.com then:
    - put it in a USB2.0 SATA case,
    - used Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my entire drive to the new one,
    - booted from the new drive externally and tested applicaitons for an hour,
    - then took it to my Mac shop to swap drives.
This minimzed the effort of the installer and maximized my confidence that everything would go smoothly.

  • While looking to upgrade to a new MBP, found out latest version of iTunes does not support wired syncing of iCal and contacts. syncing of these must be done through iCloud. This is a deal breaker for me. are there any workarounds?

While looking to upgrade to a newer MBP, found out latest version of iTunes does not support wired syncing of iCal and contacts. Syncing of these must be done through iCloud. This is a deal breaker for me for several reasons. Are there any workarounds or do I have to go back to a PC with my tail tucked between my legs?

When you say wired syncing, are you meaning between an iphone and your mac?

  • Since the latest upgrade, my bookmarks have been wiped out, not funtioning nor is my back button or History function working. There was a message after following links provided that said this couldn't be fixed. Seems incredible.

I don't know what the update was called. I always trust them. Yet after I opened Firefox, I could not use my bookmarks since they were gone. The back button nor the History feature no longer works either. I followed the prompts and the diagnostic said there wasn't anything that could be done with this version.
I am not a computer wiz. This kind of diagnostic/troubleshooting gives me the willies. If I can remove firefox and then reinstall with another version. I don't mind building up my HUGE data base of bookmarks again. Yet if there is no way to have bookmarks for my Master's research, then I must switch browsers.

Thanks Tony for your link. Unfortunately I do not have the capacity to deal with the greek that page reads to me. Is there any way someone out there can walk me step by step on how to even start? I have no idea where any of those files can be found or what is required once I get there.
There must be a place for luddites like me to get help? Do I go to an apple store? Hire a techie? Why should I have to fork out money to work a free browser. I do have an extensive library of bookmarks with all the internet research I have done, and would consider paying someone to help me restore this. sqlite file.
I am really upset that Firefox doesn't supply an operator to help folks like me since this problem developed with their stinking upgrade. How can I trust future upgrades from now on? Who would a contact person be that I could share how absolutely frustrating and unfair this experiment is for the less technical population. I think there must be more people like me that this happened to and they probably just switched browsers.
FIREFOX, your mission states you want to be user friendly and of service to the people, that your a non-profit organization here to help navigate the web. Your upgrade has just diminished the quality of that experience by more than half of my previous effectiveness. PLEASE help me resolve this problem beyond just sending me to a page in your lexicon of solutions. I go to the chat room and it's been closed every time. I would like an email address of a customer service rep. but haven't found that either.
Anyone know how to get through to a real person in this company? +Diana

  • Photos does not support external editing like iPhoto. Is there likely to be an upgrade to change this or will I abandon Photos for software that does support editing in Photoshop?

Photos does not support external editing like iPhoto. Is there likely to be an upgrade to change this or will I abandon Photos for software that does support editing in Photoshop?

iPhoto does work and there is an upgrade:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • I recently upgraded my old powerbook to an iMac.  I've dumped the files of my backup drive into the new iMac. Is there a way to have access to all the files (new and old computers) when logged on as the same user vs. logging in and out to access each?

I am new to posting to this support community but have often referred to it for answers.  So thank you all who've contributed; you've been a great help!

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • I have a G5 and bought and upgraded to osx 10.5.  now i need to upgrade to 10.5.6 or higher, but when i download and try to install, i get message "this volume does not meet requirements for this update".

i am trying to sync an ipad to a power mac g5.  i bought and upgraded to osx 10.5 and have tried to download and 10.5.6 or higher, but i keep getting same message:  "you cannot install mac os x update on this volume.  this volume does not meet requirements for this update".  help!

Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5
To me, in all such updates, goes without saying maybe: backup, repair permissions, repair your drive (Disk Warrior does more reliable and thorough job, and it comes out to pennies if you don't wait until needed). Clone your system so you can restore or use the backup - just in case.
I'd even do a fresh format after your clone is done and do a full OS clean install and update, and then a quick import from Setup Assistant.
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
    iTunes 10.2 or later recommended
    (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
I'm going to assume there is something with the partitions on the drive, partition table most likely, though I know I've seen others with that error message - doesn't really point to cause, rarely does (make sure latest firmware update etc is sometimes included but again, we know that isn't why).

i tunes wont download for iphone it keeps poping up a little box saying find file what do i do ive tried 20 times to download this and cant finger it out. it acts like its done and right befoure it is this pops up.

I'm glad I was able to help.  I kind of wish mine hadn't worked because I ended up being one of the "lucky" individuals where my phone didn't restore from the backup and I lost all of my contacts, calendar appts, notes, etc.  It took me an extra 2 hrs last night to rebuild the next month worth of appts and try to rebuild my contact list from my yahoo contacts.  Oh well.  I will be getting an android at my next upgrade.  I'm tired of all of the BS that comes with owning an iPhone.
