Upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard using a different time machine disk

Hello.
I have just purchased a new 2011 iMac which has got OSX Lion (10.7.2) installed on it. I have set up all my basic data on it. And I have set up 3 administrator user accounts on it to be shared between me, my dad and my wife.
I also own a 2010 Mac Mini with HDMI connected to my television which has the Latest Snow Leopard OSX installed in it. It has only a single user - me.
So that leads to the following questions:
1) Is it possible to take a time machine backup of the new iMac which has Lion and use it via the migration assistant on the Mac Mini (Snow leopard) to upgrade the mac mini to Lion and have all my settings on the iMac on the mac mini?
2) Will there be any compatibility issues of transferring from iMac to Mac Mini?
3) Will i get my 3 administrator user setup on the mac mini as well in case above is possible?

Your only option is to install Lion onto the mini and then set up the other accounts.

The reason appleworks no longer runs is because it is a powerpc based application. Since it's end-of-life in 2007, it was never converted to intel architecture, since it was dropped as a supported product. It continued to run on intel machines via rosetta, but OS X Lion formally discontinues all support for powerpc based programs. Powerpc based applications can only be run on OS X 10.6.8 or earlier releases (ones that still support rosetta).
So, it does sound like your best option is to move to iWorks' Pages now - otherwise you will be stuck with an increasingly more outdated operating system. And if you should buy a new machine, it would not run the older versions of OS X anyway, so at some point you have to leave appleworks behind and move on. Seems best to do it now, before Pages perhaps also moves forward to a point where it too may no longer support ancient file formats.

On your Macbook Pro, assuming it is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, you can log into the Mac App Store with the EXACT same Apple ID that you previously used to purchase Mountain Lion for the iMac. In the Store go to your Account's "Purchased Items" list and you should see Mountain Lion listed. Download it from there for Free onto your Macbook Pro.

I can't upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade an older MacBookPro to Lion from Snow Leopard. The MBP was built in 2007, and has a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, with 4GB of RAM. It's currently running OS X 10.6.8, which means the computer should be able to run Lion.
I have purchased Lion before for other machines, and so if I log into the App Store on this MBP, and then click on the "Purchases" tab, I see OS X Lion at the bottom of my list of App Store purchases, with an active "Download" button next to it. If I then click on "Download", the App Store puts up a spinning logo for a few seconds (up by the nagivation links in the top bar of the App Store), and then the spinner disappears, the "Download" button goes from greyed-out to active, and then that's it. No indication that Lion has started downloading or anything like that. I'm stumped. By all indications, I should be able to download Lion, and not only does it not download, but it gives me no information as to why it didn't.
Help!?!

Wait...I may be an idiot...
I went through this whole rigamarole of downloading the "Install OS X Lion" app onto a second mac, then copying that App over to the "Applications" folder of the old mac I'm trying to update. Then, when I looked in the "Applications" folder of the old Mac, sitting there right next to "Install OS X Lion" was an App called "Install OS X Mavericks". I have no memory of downloading that particular app, but perhaps it did, and perhaps once it did, the system prevented me from downloading the Lion installer...which would make some sense.
As of this moment, I am upgrading the machine to Mavericks, which seems like a win all around.

After upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard, mail server does not receive incoming email

After upgrading my server last night [2011.07.20] from Snow Leopard to Lion, my mail server settings went belly up. After toying around with the server, its certificates and what-not, I was able to get it running, but it is no longer receiving any emails [neither internally nor from Gmail, Yahoo, etc.].
I can send emails via SMTP just fine [using SSL] to external email accounts [and it doesn't complain when I address an email to an internal email account, but I can't verify that it's sending it to the internal email account because it won't receive!].
The Connection Doctor says that it is indeed connecting properly to the server [incoming = IMAP, outgoing = SMTP], so there is communication between Mail 5.0 [and also Thunderbird as well] and the mail server. The problem appears to be the mail server not receiving any emails - from internal or external addresses.
Anyone else having this problem or know of a fix for it?

Did you find a solution to this issue? My mail server is doing the same thing. I've tried six migrations now, and have a couple of tickets open, but they all have issues. I have worked around all of them except the mail server problem.
I did some more digging; the problem appears to be that on a migrated server, it leaves all of your mail store in the old location, doesn't move it, and then doesn't appear to upgrade spam-assassin properly. The net effect is that the mail server gets the SMTP communication, tries to pass the message into spam assassin, and then it goes south.
I see errors like this littered in the logs:

Can I upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard?

I currently have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard installed. I'm planning on getting one of the new iMacs as well. I was considering using the migration assistant to copy user, applications, etc., from my MacBook Pro, to the new iMac. So I'm thinking that for compatibility purposes, I should NOT wait and get an iMac with Lion, then try to use the migration assistant to migrate from Snow Leopard to Lion. So please tell me if this plan seems reasonable:
1. Purchase an iMac now, and use the migration assistant to copy stuff from my laptop.
2. Then upgrade the laptop and iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion when it's released.
My concern would be whether installed apps are compatible with Lion.
I'm a longtime linux user, and must say I am very impressed with Mac OS X! I still prefer linux for running server applications, but Mac OS X on the desktop is better than linux AND windows!

I wouldn't get excited about Lion. I can spend hours about making an OS a real "think different" experience.
But since nobody will be paying for that and since many people before me tried hard to make Apple developers understand what to be improved, Apple just trash those suggestions. For Example:
It must have been how many versions of Preview where if you type in a PDF document search a phrase like "I want to Go" the Preview shows each I each Want each To each Go in a PDF. C'mon.
Did you see Spaces in Lion? Was it really necessary to change it? C'mon this is like a psychotic housewife that likes to move furnitures around once in a while until some furniture got broken.

No, you won't lose them.
Nonetheless prior to the upgrade to Lion it is advisable to make a full backup of your current OSX to an external harddisk.

Moving the antivirus to trash does not delete or disable some parts of the application.
How to remove the remaining parts of the application depends on the application as the different AV-Systems place there parts at different places and use different preference files.
At first check if the AV is still listed in the startup items (System Settings - Accounts - your account - startup items) and remove them from that list.

Replacing HDD after upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard

My MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard and the disk. Then I upgraded to Lion via the App Store. then my Hard Drive crashed and I replaced it. After running my Time Machine Backup no Apps would work all saying my OS X wasn't up to date, and I couldnt Update the OS. Now Ive reinstalled OS X from the disk again and started as a new. Ive updated every App in the computer but cant get my OS to update to Lion. In the App store it says I have to purchase Lion again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all

Did you make the Time Machine backup in OS X Lion or Mac OS X Snow Leopard? If you made a Time Machine backup in OS X Lion and you restored it in Mac OS X Snow Leopard, all applications weren't working because they were designed for Lion.
Now that you have reinstalled Mac OS X Snow Leopard, open the App Store, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and download OS X Lion. If you don't see Lion, check that it's hidden > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
If you did the Time Machine backup in Lion, a different option is to start up from the Time Machine drive by holding the Alt key while your Mac is starting and selecting it. Then, select the option to restore the Time Machine backup and follow the steps

Manually migrating mail from Snow Leopard to Mavericks via Time Machine backup

Just performed a clean install of Mavericks 10.9.2 onto my computer and I would now like to manually bring in my mail from my time machine backup. Can you tell me what files to copy over and in exactly what folder they should go? P.S. I don't want to use migration assistant because Mail is the only thing I care about carrying over. Thank you.

If the two machine's have two different username/password combos, you cant' do what you want. The only solution is to create a duplicate account on the MB, mimicking the one on the iMac and then copy the Mail folder into that user's Library folder. Then, use that as your primary user account, deleting the the useless other one.
