Upgrade to snow leopard for free

Hey,
Wondering if anyone could help me, my friend bought a 13inch Macbook Pro (2009) just before Snow Leopard was released. I know if you bought your Macbook within a certain period, you could upgrade to Snow leopard for free. However, does anyone know if this is still on offer? As he wants to upgrade to Lion.
Thank you very much,
Reece

No, seems like you had 30 days from purchase to claim the upgrade.  The same thing applies to Lion upgrades.
They will have to purchase the $29 SL upgrade and then purchase Lion.

Captfred

  • $9.95 upgrade to Snow Leopard for new computers?

My son bought a MBP for college last month and was told he could upgrade to Snow Leopard for the price of the disks ($9.95, I think) when it came out. Now that it is announced, I don't see any info on this upgrade path. Can anyone help?

  • Mac os x 10.5.8 to snow leopard for free?

    hi all:
i have macbook (4gb ram, intel) with leopard on it (10.5.8) and i was told that i should be able to have it upgraded to snow leopard or even lion for free. is it true or just outdated information.
    thanks.

I believe that's outdated info, at one time  for a short period, if you had a MobileMe account you could call Apple & get 10.6 for free, but 10.6 is only about $20.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

Once you get it up to 10.6.8 you can download 10.9 for free, if your Mac will only run 10.7 or 10.8 then you need to get a code from Apple to download it.

  • Can I download OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for free

I apparently need this software upgrade since I can't install itunes 11.1 in order for my iphone 4 to work with it. Can I download it for free? I see that you can download Mavericks but you must have software of atleast 10.6 which I do not have, only 10.5.8:(

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X Snow Leopard is not free. It can be purchased in a DVD at the Apple Online Store > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Before upgrading, make a backup of your files onto an external drive with Time Machine. After upgrading, open  > Software Update to install Mac OS X 10.6.8, so you will be able to install iTunes 11.1.4.

  • Prep. Questions for Upgrading Tiger- Snow Leopard for Iphone 4.

    Hi,
Like everyone else, I failed to realized iphone 4 was not tiger compatible. Regardless of my carelessness, and my ill-feelings towards Apple for this strange move, I have a few questions that I keep getting mixed answers to and would like to finally clear some of them up. I sincerely hope someone can help me, I've been using my phone for about 2 weeks now with no contacts/apps/previous data, and the longer I wait, the more it's grating on my feelings.
    Background:
I have many applications on my computer, like the adobe suite, games, ect. that I am worried about making the transfer. So far, no one seems to be able to tell me what is going to happen to them when/if I upgrade. I do not have the keys for the adobe suite anymore..... could this seriously screw me?
    2) I've purchased the simple, $50 family pack snow leopard install discs. Again, I'm planning on jumping from 10.4.11 to whatever comes pre-installed on those discs. My computers specs meet the requirements for snow leopard, so, Is there any problem with this? Sources online say I'm AOK, and only after I bought it from apple and bring it home do they tell me (as I called to ask about backing up my hd) that I can't use this, that I need the box set with Iwork and Ilife.
    My frustration rises
I just really need someone to help clear this up for me before I accidently fatally lose everything on my computer because I was given false information.
    3) Incase I do totally bomb this, I'm attempting to make a copy of my harddrive to my external through Disc Utilities.
Say I do upgrade successfully to Snow Leopard, but the Adobe Software is lost, would I be able to restore my computer back to this current Tiger state from my external?
4)Is it just not possible to run Snow Leopard with my current versions of Imovie, Iphoto, ect?
I'm trying to keep cool, but seriously, if I have to go back and buy the box set just to upgrade my Iwork(which i don't use) and Ilife set, and then on top of that, repurchase the Adobe suite because it won't make the switch, I'm going to not only be furious, but lose a lot of respect for Apple.
Thanks for any help you can give me. Seriously.

The Box Set is "recommended", not essential, what you have will work.

First off, the only way to be 100% safe is to have a bootable Clone of what you have now.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Or the most expensive one & my favorite, Tri-Backup...
    http://www.tri-edre.com/english/tribackup.html
Boot from the clone and make certain everything is OK before install SL on the internal, then you could in a worst case scenario clone it back to the internal, or have 2 different OSes to choose from.
Is it just not possible to run Snow Leopard with my current versions of Imovie, Iphoto, ect?
I use iMovie 6 HD in SL/10.6, but be sure if installing iMovie that your current version isn't named iMovie so it doesn't get erased.
and then on top of that, repurchase the Adobe suite because it won't make the switch
You don't mention which versions of Adobe Apps you have.

  • MacBook won't upgrade to Snow Leopard

I have a Macbook 13" Late 2008 "Unibody" which I just downgraded from Mountain Lion to Leopard.
That really upped the speed of the computer, which really was extremely slow on Mountain Lion.
I then wanted to upgrade to Snow Leopard, for which I purchased a disc ages ago.
I put it in the computer and run the installer which seems to be working just fine. However, after a period of time, perhaps done 20% of the install, the computer reboots taking me to "the new installer" screen. The cursor just loads and the screen won't appear, whereafter the computer just shuts down.
The only way to get the computer working again, is by taking the disc out by left clicking, pushing the disc out. The computer then starts in Leopard....
    What am I doing wrong?
Would it help to delete the partition and start over with only installing the Snow Leopard disc? As I recall the disc is only an upgrade.
    Appreciate the help.
    Kind regards
    Peter

How much free space on the startup disk?
Control click the MacintoshHD icon on the desktop then click Get Info.
    You'll see:  Capacity and Available
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
If there's plenty of free disk space, check the startup disk.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left the then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk   (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If repairs are necessary, insert your Mac install disc.

  • IPhone 4s does not trust iMac after upgrade to Snow Leopard. I am using my iPhone's hot spot for internet connection.

Can't sync iPhone and iMac since upgrading to Snow Leopard. Using iPhone for internet access. Help??

    Hello Brad:
First, forget about a virus. There are NO documented viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
Do you have about 10-15% of the HD free at all times?
Open activity monitor and see what is taking the processor capacity.

  • HT6114 Is there a way to get a free OS upgrade to snow leopard?

I am currently running OS 10.5.8 and I desparately need to upgrade to snow leopard so I can ultimately upgrade to mavericks. I am a student at Salisbury University and my wife is a student at the University of Maryland, we both have iphone 5's and I also have an ipad 2. So in order to have our desktop communicate with our other devices we need to update the OS. With both of us being in school $$ is not in tremendous supply, I know apple offered a free download for snow leopard around 2012. It would be great if there is any way we can get the SL upgrade for free.

Firstly it may pay to see if your Mac meets the requirements for Mavericks. Is your Macbook the Aluminium model? Check here

Also a lot of your old Appications may not work under avericks. Check here for compatability.

  • Free upgrade to snow leopard - bought computer in 2009

I bought my computer with Leopard in mid 2009 - at the time Snow Leopard was just released and I understand they offered free upgrades at the time for recent purchases.   Is it possible to get the free upgrade to Snow Leopard at this time and how do I go about gettting it?
    thank you all

Im fuming. Because 1 week or so- before this 'Free Release'- I purchased a Snow Leopard Disk as a 'step' to upgrading to Lion... I am a long time MobileMe user PAYING for the privilege for over 5 years.
I had to do the 'upgrades' slowly, as I am currently unemployed (between jobs) and had to budget the new OS upgrade in... (I rely on my 'mobileme' account for business/employment)... And then they send it out for free... I get its $29.00. But- when you are unemployed $29.00 could be food for the next week. Or half a tank of petrol to get to interviews...
    SOOOO ANNOYED.

  • Upgraded to snow leopard, now safari scrolls a page down when space bar is hit and sometimes crashes.  Any ideas for a fix?

I just upgraded to the new snow leopard, now my Safari is acting loopy.  At times, the page will scroll down when I hit the space bar.  As I type this discussion the screen isn't paging down, but if I go to the tab where I have facebook loaded and hit the space bar, it acts as a page down key.  I've had safari crash about 5 times tonight for no apparent reason.  The delete key sometimes will act as a page back key.  I really have no idea whats going on.
I've had keyboards go wacko on me before due to something being spilled on them or a wireless problem, but this keyboard is a wired keyboard and nothing was spilled on it.  It's rather new and I'm quite certain it's not a keyboard issue.
No settings have been changed on the computer.  The only thing different today from yesterday, is the fact that I upgraded to snow leopard.
    Help would be pretty sweet.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Looking for some assistance upgrading to snow leopard

    Hello!
I am upgrading to snow leopard from mac osx 10.4.11 (which i believe is tiger). I have an intel-based mac.
I have read about doing a "clean install" and have heard that it can be beneficial. I have an external hard drive that is about twice the size of my internal hard drive.
I will be purchasing the "box set" of snow leopard (i heard that if one is upgrading from tiger they must buy the box set-not sure if this is necessarily true though).
Ok, so I have searched the forum for "how to do a clean install" and some of the terminology was beyond me.
I am looking for step-by-step instruction for doing a clean install in layman's terms.
I think this will be helpful for many others who utilize the search function.
I thank you in advance and will mark useful responses as such.

I would not upgrade to Snow unless I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal-drive boot volume on it. I think that there is enough risk upgrading to Snow that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine for an installation backup; I don't trust it enough. To make a bootable clone using Disk Utility (DU):
    1. Start DU;
    2. Make sure you external drive is partitioned GUID (not totally necessary, but I'd do it);
    3. Choose Restore;
    4. Drag your internal volume to the source box;
    5. Drag your external partition to the destination box;
    6. Choose Erase Destination; and
    7. Click restore.
It will take an hour more or less. Once the clone is made, start up from it to make sure it is functional.
If you do an erase and install, then you will be able to migrate your data, settings, users, and apps from your clone at the end of the install. If you do not like Snow, then you can restore your internal using the clone. The clone is your data backup, possible migration medium, and fail-safe device.
To do an erase and install, start up to your DVD by holding down C during startup, and stop after selecting your language. Use the menus to start Disk Utility and to make sure your drive has a GUID partition. If it does, then use disk utility to erase Mac extended (journaled). If it is not GUID, then make it GUID by selecting the number of partitions you want (even if the number shown is what you want). Selecting GUID will erase your drive correctly. In either case, quit Disk Utility, and continue your installation. At the end, you will be able use the Setup Assistant to migrate your data, settings, users, and apps from your clone.
You probably will want to install at least two of the optional install items, Rosetta (if you plan on using any PPC apps) and QT7. You can install either from the Optional Install Items folder on your on Sno install DVD.
Leave your Ethernet cable, if any, in place when installing, but unplug all unecessary peripherals except those needed to install.

  • I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard and have lost my epson printer software. On Epson Aus. web page there is no upgrade of their software for my printer with Snow Leopard. Can i download a lesser operating system software for printer?

I have just upgraded to snow leopard and lost my epson printer software. I have checked Epson Aus web site for printer software but they haven't upgraded it for snow leopard. Am i able to download software for a lesser operating system then snow leopard or do i have to purchase a new printer? The model is stylus photo R310.

Have you tried the R300 or R320 software? Typically the software covers a broad spectrum of printers, often providinbg overlap to cover "relatives" of a series.

I had an older version of Mac OS, I upgraded to Snow leopard and then OSx Lion, most of my software has been upgraded except for Imovie.  Now I can't get my projects to upload or share to iDVD or iTunes.   Also to compound the situation everytime I attempt to share to iDVD or iTunes, iMovie quits unexpectedly.    What do I do?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.
