Upgraded a new MBP from its updated 10.7.5 to 10.8.2, but no updates to get after it?

Hello.
I upgraded my client's new MBP from its updated 10.7.5 to 10.8.2. It appeared to be a success after the long wait (took a short nap). There are no updates found from both Software Updates and App Store? Did all the updating in 10.7.x's Software Update and App Store give me all the updates that are the same in the recently released 10.8.2? Or did something go wrong? I hope to get a yes, so I can start the users migrations and tweaks after my late lunch.
Thank you in advance.

No.
You have a new OS and you say you checked for more updates. Then you´re good to go. 10.7 is gone on your Mac, så don´t worry about it. BTW, all software update go through App Store now, either you check under the Apple menu or in App Store. It wouldn´t harm to verify disk/repair permissions in Disk Utility.
OK cool. I am currently migrating. Sheesh, both Macs wouldn't see each other until I found a correct network direct cable. Ugh! There is always problems. And yes, I did do a verify disk with a bootable Mac OS X 10.8.2 DVD DL (was going to do a clean install, but that got confusing and I decided to do an upgrade), and it was good.

  • What would be the cost of adding or upgrading brand new MBP from 2gb to 4?

I purchased a new 15" but only have 2gb - is the cost only $150 to upgrade to 4gb or does it need to be configured from the outset?

    You probably have 2 x 1GB sticks installed ?
You can get two decent 2GB sticks from as little as US$50 each, e.g.

Just delete it from the Applications folder, and re-download it.
If it still says installed when you go to Purchased in App Store, click somewhere else, and option-click Purchased. That allows you to redownload already installed software.

  • Question about upgrading to Leopard (MBP) from Tiger (PB G4)

Hey everyone, I got an imporant question, which actually will decide what would I buy/do, hope some of you can help me please!
Ok, so first of all, this is my situation:
I got a Powerbook G4 12-inch (bought in December 2005) and I never bought any upgrades of iLife to it...so it still has iLife 05. Now, this mac is not working anymore for me cause I need more speed/room and besides I want Leopard and this thing can't do Leopard (it has 1.5GHz, 512MB). So I already got my buyer and I also bought an external HD from the Apple Online Store (the iomega with 500GB) so I can clone the HD of my current mac.
My plan is to buy a new MacBook Pro in Januray, right after Macworld, that is 15th and then when it is in the setup for Leopard mount this hard drive that has a clone from my old computer to the new MBP.
So my question is: If I mount and setup Leopard from the clone of my powebook, would I lose the extras such as iLife 08 (maybe it would make me go back to iLife 05?) or Front Row and that sort of stuff? and also, can I erase later the whole external disc so I can use its 100% capacity in Time Machine?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    -Fernando

...so all I can do now is to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my PowerBook G4's drive to my external FireWire HD?
Yes that is all you can do today.
...and to clarify, I only need to use Migration Assistant in the MBP after the installation of Leopard, until the Welcome to Mac screen appears?
No. The new MacBook Pro will already have Leopard installed. You will simply be going through the "Welcome to Mac" process because it is a new Mac and you are powering it on for the first time.
oh, and would it make go back to iLife 05 or it will keep the iLife 08 apps?
iLife '08. Like I said Migration Assistant doesn't blindly copy files.

  • Can't access new MBP from other Macs on my network

I just got a new last-gen MBP running Leopard. All Apple updates are installed. I need to access it from two Macs on my network that are running Tiger (also with all current updates installed). Tiger-to-Tiger connections are running perfectly. And the new Mac accesses the Internet, networked printers and so on just fine.
Problem: While the MBP shows up in the other machines' Network Browser, they can't connect to it. And, while the MBP sees the other machines, all it can connect to is the account Public Folders (the entire volumes are set to share).
The new MBP was populated with data from my old PB G4 using Migration Assistant.
I've never had a problem like this. I've tried disabling the MBP Firewall, rebooting the network, rebooting all of my Macs, but still no luck.
I've searched the Discussions and didn't find any help in previous postings. Hopefully someone can help me now...
    Thank you!

    Abbott Schindler wrote:
I can connect to any of the Tiger machines from the Leopard machine.
And the Leopard machine shows in each Tiger machine's network browser.
I've rebooted all of the machines at least once and rebooted my router and switch as well.
I've tried connecting to the Leopard machine by specifying its afp address.
None of this works. I guess I'll need to take advantage of my free 90 days of tech support and call Apple. In 20 years of owning Macs, I've never encountered anything like this. I still hope I don't need to reinstall the OS, but I'm getting very worried.
Thanks for all the suggestions; I'll keep checking back and will also post the solution if one is found.
I do not think it's an OS issue. At least one requiring a reinstall.
I just started my other MBP with Tiger. Takes a bit since it's booting via a FW400 pipe.
I will see if I can access this MBP from that one in a few minutes. Never did that - all my systems have been peers. (Booted faster than I expected.)
First I note that this Leopard box does not show up on the Tiger box.
Also "go" and browse does not show this box.
It worked but I had to enter this IP into the "connect to" on Tiger.
    Required login and password.
Connected via afp and a window popped up with the volumes on this box to connect to.
Clicked this user account and there I was.
After that, this box showed up in the Finder sidebar.
So Tiger will connect to a Leopard box, but it seems that one needs to enter the IP of the Leopard box. If that does not work, then something is wrong.
Curiously, that Tiger box has not registered on this Leopard under Places.
Ah, I did not have filesharing on in the Tiger box. Turned it on and I can see it from here.
So I have bilateral network connections: Leopard here <-> Tiger there
Works for me, but that does not help you except to know that it should work.
BTW The Tiger version is 10.4.11.

  • Installing FCS 3 (upgrade) on new MBP with Mountain Lion

    Hi:
I just bought a new MBP with Mountain Lion installed.  I have FCS3 upgrade, which I have now on my Mac Pro tower.  I originally bought FCP version 1 back in 2000, so I've had it for quite some time.
When I insert the FCS install DVD into the MBP, the disc spins up and then spins down.... and nothing happens.  Nothing opens, no dialogue box, not sign of any activity.
    What am I missing here?

Open the finder window and click on the DVD to open it up. Make sure you have the first DVD disk...
I have FCS 3 (FCP 7) running in ML with no problems. I did a clean install of ML first... and installed the FCS 3 upgrade after that... But, make sure you install QuickTime 7 before you install FCS 3... FCS 3 with turn QuickTime 7 into the Pro version.

I installed LiveType from FCS 2 too...

  • Migrating to new MBP from TC Backup – Help/Advice

Sorry in advance... this may seem frustrating to some of yall. I became addicted to Apple because stuff just works, and I don't need to know the gory details of a computer to make it sing.
I am gearing up to receive a new MBP 15". I currently had a original MBP that died in surgery, so Apple is sending a new MBP to replace it. I have a complete/current backup on TC. How do I go about restoring the entire thing. I've only used TC to retrieve a deleted file, which was pretty easy, but what about an entire system?
Also, I just want to copy my data, but not the entire contents of the old system... I am not sure I am explaining this properly, but I don't want all the potentially corrupt, old, settings/systems files that bogged down my old machine. This will be my 3rd Mac, and when I got the second one, I felt like it copied over all the crap that I didn't want. I just want my documents, contacts, photos, and music. The only 3rd party App I use is Adobe CS3, which I can reinstall via the instal disk.
Am I just misunderstanding the process? Does Migration Assistant give you options to just copy data you want but not system files/settings/etc. Is there a way to "scrub" the stored data so my new machine runs smooth from the start?
In a nutshell, how would you Mac Jedi transition to a new machine?
    Thanks,
    Phil.

    Phil,
OK then, "easy" it is! I'll offer some tips on doing some "spring cleaning" after the restoration instructions.
First, decide whether or not you want to erase the new machine's hard drive and reinstall yourself. I usually recommend doing so, because some machines ship with incipient disk errors, and one can customize the installation this way. Regardless of whether you do or not, the rest of the procedure remains the same.
    1) When you start the machine, or restart after a format/reinstall, proceed through the Setup Assistant using the exact same username and short name that you had on the old machine. When you are logged into your new account, enable the "root" account, then log in as root.
    2) In the root account, navigate to the "Users" folder. Select the entire contents of this folder, specifically including your newly created (and pretty much empty) HOME folder, and place the contents in the trash.
    3) Control-click (or right-click) the Time Machine icon in the Dock, and choose "Browse another Time Machine disk" from the menu. Find your old Time Machine backup. Navigate within the backup to the "Users" folder, go one step "back in time," and select the entire contents there. SPecifically, this should include your old backed up HOME folder. Restore the entire contents to the local "Users" folder.
    4) Typically, this is all one needs to do, but there is the possibility in your case that the UID for your new account does not match the UID for the files from the backup. The following will preemptively cover this possibility. Still in the root account, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal. At the prompt, type the following, followed by a <RETURN>:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">chown -R username:staff /Users/username</pre>
In the above command, you will replace all instances of "username" with the short name for your own account. If your short name is "fred," for example, you will type te following exactly:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">chown -R fred:staff /Users/fred</pre>
After pressing <RETURN>, wait for the prompt to return. When it does, quit Terminal.
    5) Since you are concerned about "cruft" having accumulated in your HOME folder, there is one more step we will take. Navigate into your restored HOME folder (you are still using the root account), into your "Library" folder, and find the "Caches" folder (/Users/HOME/Library/Caches). Select the entire contents of this folder, and place them in the trash.
    6) Log into your new account to test that everything works correctly. You may see some things like Dock icons for apps that are not yet reinstalled appearing as question marks, or you may have to re-select your Desktop picture, but everything else should be functional, and should appear just as they did on your old computer. If everything seems OK, log back into the root account, empty the trash, then log out of and disable the root account.

  • My desk top shortcuts to favorite web sites only open in a blank page. I have to then reload in a new tab from the toolbar or a bookmark. It is annoying but not critical.

I have shortcuts on my desktop for yahoo mail and a few other sites. I used to be able to go directly to them. Now it opens in a blank page and I have to load the site in a new tab from the toolbar shortcuts or a bookmark. Also my saved passwords no longer exist. It all happened after a firefox upgrade to my yahoo tool bar.

  • HT4623 im trying to update my ipad 2 to ios 4.3 but the update software button isn't there to click on! any ideas please?

I'm trying to upgrade to ios 4.3 on my ipad 2 but it's telling me to tap on general then upgrade software but that upgrade software button isnt there to tap, any ideas plz??

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, as you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases if you are on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
Your iPad should be updated to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change.

I think you are mistaken about needing it.  Since you do not write in Chinese, it will not be of any more use to you than were the earlier Chinese word list updates you have posted about here in the past.  Nor can I imagine that anyone in these forums will be able to help you get it, any more than they could the last time.

But I wish you good luck!
Apple now has a special discussion forum for Chinese.  You might want to ask there:
