Upgrading from 10.4.11 - what works what won't

If I am going to upgrade to newer versions of OS to take advantage of MobileMe, can anyone tell me how many of my existing apps will cease to work?
- Adobe CS2 (photoshop, etc)
- old version of Virtual PC
- and so on...

never mind !

    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Started to upgrade from Lion got interrupted and now it won't download

    Hello webejamn,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when trying to download and install OS X Mavericks.  It sounds like the download from the Mac App Store for OS X Mavericks was interrupted and didn't complete.
I recommend the following step when an Mac App Store download is interrupted:
If downloading an app is interrupted
Once an Internet connection is reestablished, your purchased downloads should automatically restart. The Mac App Store may alert you that there was an issue with the download and ask if you'd like to restart the download(s). Confirming will restart all pending downloads. For more information on this topic, see Mac App Store: How to resume interrupted downloads.
Note: The download time will vary according to the file's size and your Internet connection speed. Refer to this article about iTunes Store purchases for more information about download times for large files.

  • Upgrade from CS4 to CS5--what functions in CS4 do I lose?

By grading from CS5 to CS4, what functions will I lose in CS4? I see that the "upgrade" button is greyed out in CS4. Anything else?

Just to be clear (and I don't think I was originally)...the upgrade is from CS4 to CS5. I see that CS4 is still available and operating. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't become "dead" after upgrading to CS5.
Thanks for all the information and responses.

  • Upgrade from SP2010 to 2013 [What is the minimum build required?]

Can SP2010 SP1 + June 2012 CU (14.0.6123.5000) be upgraded to SP2013? else, what is the minimum build required to move from SP2010 to SP2013?
Is there any Technet article which clarifies this?
    Regards,
    Harish Kumar

Actually the Build is not a problem because you will have to backup and restore SP 2010 backup on different machine and attach it to farm using powershell. you do not have a inplace upgrade option. you will have to go for database upgrade only

    Why can't I upgrade from 10.5.8 to OS 10.6?

You need to use a retail DVD(phone the online Apple Store) and not a downloadable updater or a DVD which originally shipped with a Mac.

  • Upgrading from K9A2 to AM3: What board for Win2k?

I know that anything having to do with Digital Rights Management won't work with Win2k, but I was wondering which AM3 socket board would offer "pretty good" support for Win2k in terms of drivers.
In some instances there's simply no Win2k driver download available, and I don't know if the installer immediately barfs on Win2k systems, or if you could unpack drivers individually so that ALMOST everything would work.
I'm using Windows 2000 Server to access all four cores ...
Note:  I'm not a gamer and not heavy into multi-media stuff, so more basic audio/video operation would be OK.

Quote from: Fredrik on 10-March-11, 23:22:11
Isn't it better to trim your current system for what W2000 likes best, office work and networking maybe, and have a separate system for media handling, gaming and such? I imagine this would amount to less money and work and difficulties.
My problem at the moment is just locating any AM3 mainboard with ANY chipset drivers for Win2k.
I hate activation / "phoning home" to M$, so I've avoided upgrading to XP.
I know that XP Pro would give me support for the cores I have and most any chipset. It looks like I could go that route pretty cheaply, but I don't know how ugly it would be to put a non-server OS over top of a server installation, even though I'm just using Win2k Server as a fast workstation.
I've also considered crossing over to some flavor of Linux and running windows apps under WINE (whatever). I've had very modest Linux experience years ago, and don't know how much of a nightmare that change would be.
I like the idea of having a 64-bit OS some day, but I've always been afraid that any newer version of Windows would be so bloated compared to the older ones that any added performance gains would be more than offset by the snails pace of the OS / "new and improved" apps ...
I've loved Win2k because it was the first version of the OS where USB support REALLY worked, and the kernel was relatively light and fast compared to what followed.
Thinking about getting everything to work all over again on a new platform makes me CRINGE, and I've been at this for decades!

  • Upgrading from 3GS to 4S - what's best procedure for transferring info?

i have an iphone 3gs and just got the 4s. What do I need to do to get the 3GS info onto my new phone? What's easiest? I haven't done anything with my new 4S and i have not upgraded the 3GS phone to the new software. Advice?

IF you've been syncing the 3Gs on a regular basis, including contacts to a supported application (address book on the Mac or Windows Address Book or Outlook on a PC) AND all of your media is in the iTunes library you normally sync to, AND all of your apps are in the iTunes library you normally sync to, then you should be able to plug the 3Gs in, back it up and sync it, Start up the 4S, go through the screens until you get the choice to Activate it and restore using iTunes, then plug it in. It should restore all of your apps, data and settings from the old phone to the new one.
BE CAREFUL. iOS 5 no longer displays the big swipe to cancel sync message when it's busy syncing with the computer. Touch the home button if the screen is dark and look at the top of the screen next to the signal strength meter. If you see 2 little rotating arrows, it's still busy.

  • Upgrade from 10.5.8 - what to do?

    Hi all
I bought an iMac in 2008, and haven't thought about upgading the OS ever since ...
Now I have bought the Apogee Duet interface for music production, and the OS needs to be 10.6.8 or 10.7.5 ...
I am totally blank - what should I do? What OS is the best?
The iMac is 2.4GHz IntelCore 2 Duo
    Cheers!

Your first step will be to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.8). All further upgrades will require you to have at least 10.6.8. You can check requirements and purchase info at the link below.

  • Upgrade from MacBook 2008 to what?

My April 2008 MacBook is still working well, but is getting a little long in the tooth. Running 10.6.8 but can't install any newer systers after Lion. I use my MacBook at home with an external monitor and keyboard. My options seem to be a new MacBook Pro, a refurb MacBook Pro, or get a Mac Mini and keep the old MacBook for the rare occasions that I travel or do family history research. Another possibility is that a nephew works for a company that replaces MacBooks and makes the older ones available to employees or their families to buy. Example, a 2011 MacBook 15" cost him $650. My budget maxes at $1,500. Suggestions? Thanks.

I can attest to the late 2011 MBP model. like shldr. It runs on ML great. My only recommendation if you were to go this route would be to upgrade RAM to 8 gb. If you are getting the 8,2 (i7 2.2 GHz quad core, duel gpx cards, etc), 650$ is a steal. Definitely usable for 2-3 generations given the processor and graphics hards. Memory should be no more than 100$ if installed manually (2x4 gb SO-DIMM 1333 banks). I would spend 170$ and get 16gb (2x 8 gb cards) and this machine will run very well. visit newegg.com or owc and check out memory deals.
Memory is kind of like the bottleneck for the processor. The processor is amazing, and more memory will only 'unleash' the power of the CPU.
I feel like a spokesman for an apple commercial. Though they usually stick with dancing silhouettes.
    Cheers

  • I just upgraded from LR4 to 5 what a mistake...

Hello I hope someone can help.
I upgraded yesterday from LR4 to LR 5.  Why is it so slow?  If I highlight three images in my library view and right click, it takes nearly 4 seconds for the right click menu to appear, if I then select "stack", it takes another 5 - 10 seconds. i never had this problem in LR4.  I have I7, plus 16 Gb Ram in win 7.
I also sometimes get a wierdly slow screen draw where the different parts of the LR interface seem to redraw in slow motion one after another, taking up to 10 seconds to complete.  This is unusable.  I am not impressed so far...
    Any suggestions?

In most usages 5 is faster than 4.  I'd start with the standard things like deleting preferences and updating video drivers.
