  • Will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard delete programs?

Sorry if this is a stupid question or answered a million times before, but will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard stop my existing programs (PhotoShop, Office etc) from running? I've got an Intel MacBook but I've never installed a new OS myself, so any tips gratefully received! Thank you.

You will lose the ability to work in any Classic OS applications that ran under system 9.
If I were you, before upgrading do yourself a favor and purchase an external hard drive that you can "clone" your Mac to. If possible, a large enough drive that you can have 2 partitions. In one you would clone your current system and apps. Then after the upgrade, clone again your updated system to the other partition as a emergency backup.
With the clone of your current set up, if need be you can rebbot to it so that you can use any of your "old" applications.

  • Will an upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard make me loose programs?

I have an old 2007 Macbook pro and I need to upgrade from Tiger OS 10.4.11 to either leopard of Snow leopard because my charger broke and the new charger does not work probably in the older laptops unless you firmare update (which I cannot do as my OS is less than 10.5)
My question is: Will upgrading wipe all the files and programs from my laptop? I have programs that I no longer have the discs, to install them with, for so if they get wiped I will be unable to get them back and they are programs I need on a daily basis. I was just wondering what upgrading from tiger to leopard will actually involve? Will I loose all files/programs so it would be like starting from scratch with a new computer? Or would it not change these things?

Buy an external drive (or two).
Clone your system before you begin.
Repair the drive while at it, Apple First Aid and another 3rd party program.
Make sure you can boot from your backup clone.
Apple Restore is part of Disk Utilty or there is SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Me, I would take the above precautions. Then I would format your drive with SL DVD, and perform and clean install. Do all the updates. Then use Setup or Migration Assistant.
Look for threads, there seems to be 4-5 a week at least on Migrating, going from 10.4 or from PPC to 10.6.
That is the safest. In theory, and YMMV, you could try upgrade in place, but not without backups, and repairing your drive with SL DVD first.

Is buying the box set a MUST to upgrade from tiger to snow leopard?? I just need the update to run a piece of hardware. I don't WANT all that other stuff.

First you said you had a friend who had the "multi family pack," now you imply this is a family member, so which is it?
Regardless, what matters is that only persons located in *the same household* can use the same Family Pack license. This is clearly stated at the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Family Pack - Apple Store (U.S.) web page & in the Snow Leopard EULA pdf. From the store page:
    *About the Family Pack*
The Family Pack Software License Agreement allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that household. By “household” we mean a person or persons who share the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home, or condominium, including students who are primary residents of that household but reside at a separate on-campus location. This license does not extend to business or commercial users.
And this information now has also has some form the gentlemen that I am now dealing with to know repair the computer and put is back to a working order.
I'm sorry but I don't know what this sentence means or how it is supposed to relate to this topic. No Apple tech is going to tell you that you must upgrade to a different version of Snow Leopard to fix anything if you have a legitimately licensed retail copy of that OS -- there is just the one version suitable for those upgrading from Tiger, sold with one of two licenses.

Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.

  • Upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard 10.6.5

I have a MAC desktop with Tiger 10.4.11 and just recently bought another MAC desktop with Snow Leopard 10.6.5. I want to buy the Microsoft Office Home/Student 2011 for MAC 1 user with 3 license. Question: The older 10.4.11 will not support the 2011 edition of Office. I need to upgrade to 10.5.8 or later on the older MAC. How do I do that? Do I buy Snow Leopard and just install it over Tiger? If there are any other programs installed on the older MAC will they stay work with Snow Leopard? Or... do I need to install Leopard and then Snow Leopard? Thanks.

Hi dhatch, and a warm welcome to the forums!
We'd need to more about that 10.4.11 Mac to see if it could do 10.5.8, or 10.6.5.

  • Having trouble upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard 10.6.3.

I'm having a problem upgrading my operating system to SL 10.6.3. When I insert the install disc my iMac just rejects the disc without mounting it. My hard drive is not cluttered with applications because I mainly just surf the web. The several times I was able to get the install disc to mount, when I try to install the disc just ejects. I'm having the same problem with the Tiger 10.4 install disc when I try to restart in 10.4 so I can run disc utilities disc repair it ejects even holding down the c key. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. jwgpp

Hi, not positive, but it sounds like maybe the Optical drive is flaky, but a lomg shot...
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterpretable Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Upgrading from OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard

Hello, I've heard mixed reviews from people at the Apple store to people on the street whether it's possible to upgrade directly from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. Below are my specs, and I'd love to hear a second opinion from someone!
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version: 1.7f10

You should be able to upgrade the OS X to Snow Leopard with the less costly upgrade DVD
from Apple; that won't give you the newer iLife, or iWorks, but it would be a full install disc.
The computer should see an upgrade in RAM, too; 2GB probably is minimal, and this can be
a concern if you also have a jam-packed hard disk drive and no working free space for the
system or applications to use the OS X's automatic Virtual Memory, based on available space.
An upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard will invite issues and problems from third-party
applications not written to run in the later OS X version; you may have to buy/upgrade them, too.

Anyway, the upgrade by itself on a new or 'secure erased' HDD may work just fine.
The hardware upgrade suggested (RAM, larger hard disk drive) would help. Also,
if there are any pending Firmware updates available, be sure to install them, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Up Grade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard (Box Set)

I have a two part Question:
Do I have to do a full install or can I perform a partial install and not to up grade to snow leopard using the Box Set. I read stories the snow Leopard up grade is having issues with certain older programs (i.e. Photo shop, Word etc...) Is this true?
I assume the best method to install would be a Clean and Install or is there another way that it's done? The reason I need to up grade is because of my new modem -Airport Extreme, which requires Leopard.
    Thank for your insight..

[Here is a thread describing a successful upgrade install from Tiger to Sno.|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2185421&tstart=125] And, here are my thoughts about moving from Tiger to Sno. I recommend that you use the upgrade method if your Tiger install is a very good one. Otherwise, I would do an erase and install. The backup process I would use in either case is described below.
Your Mac must meet [these general requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html]. I would not upgrade to SL unless I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal-drive boot volume on it. I think that there is enough risk upgrading to SL that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine for an installation backup; I don't trust it enough. If you do not like SL, then you can restore your internal using the clone. In doing an upgrade install, the clone is your data backup and fail-safe device. You can clone with Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you do an erase and install, then the clone also is your migration medium.
An upgrade install is performed by installing over your existing installation from the desktop or having started from your SL DVD. Doing so requires you to have a GUID partition. To proceed, start the installer, choose your language, start Disk Utility, make sure your partition is GUID, quit disk utility if it is and continue your installation. All your data, users settings, and apps will be present after your upgrade, except that incompatible programs will be archived in the Incompatible Software folder. It the partition is not GUID, then you will have to do an erase and install.
If you do an erase and install, then make sure your partition is GUID as described above. After you install, then you will be able to use set up assistant to migrate you data, apps, users, and settings to your new SL install. Also, if you have to make your partition GUID, then your drive will automatically be erased Mac extended (journaled). Finally, post back if you choose to do an erase and install. I have more info to provide.
You probably will want to install at least two of the optional install items on your Sno DVD, Rosetta and QT7. You can install either from the Optional Install Items folder on your on SL install DVD.
Leave your Ethernet cable, if any, in place when installing, but unplug all peripherals except those needed to install.

  • Upgrade from OSX 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard/OS X Lion

I know my operating system is really behind.  Now that OSX lion is out I am very behind in terms of my operating system. Do I need to buy snow leopard first and then lion.  If so can I just buy the leopard upgrade or do I need to buy the box set also?  Thanks for the help I am really clueless about this stuff!

If your computer meets the requirements you could upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion, but upgrading to Lion requires that Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later first be installed. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD at your local Apple retailer or online for $29 USD.
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current Tiger Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor

  • Going from tiger 10.4.11 to snow leopard 10.6.5

So for christmas my mom got me an ipod touch(newest one out) and I was completely stoked. To make a long story short,I had to download the new itunes and what happens? I can't because I'm only one os below what is needed. So I am super frustrated because I also couldn't get a game due to the same problem, but I didn't care about the game enough to upgrade my entire os.Anyways I'm just curious on what to do.
It seems I'm just stuck and going to spend the 129 to get the new os(might as well anyways I suppose, since I can get an updated version of garageband and the others,so I guess it ain't all to bad,but still im upset cause I like 10.4.11) If I buy this will this be a simple pop the cd in my computer do what the screen says and then upgrade? or is this going to be a huge deal? I also bought this computer off ebay almost 2 years ago so when I got it all I got was my charger and computer,no original disks or if it came with anything,so will I need to worry if this doesn't work? I'm pretty new with apple.I've never needed to do an upgrade and what not so I'm just worried and not to sure how this all works and if someone could give me an insight it'd help me out and ease my frustration.I feel like I'm making it a bigger deal then it is,but I thought I'd come here and get some help from others who know what their doing.Cause I'm debating if I should order the new thing tonight so I can have it before I leave thursday and have no worries about my computer and can finally use my ipod.
Also just curious,am I going to lose everything that's on my computer now? or what would I need to do about all my files and what not? cause I have a lot of pretty important things I need to bring on the new os when I get it.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I see that A Brody has just posted a reply, but this one was ready to go and isn't a complete duplicate, so I'll post it anyway.
If that cost is a problem, you can instead buy only OS X 10.6 for US$29.
If I buy this will this be a simple pop the cd in my computer do what the screen says and then upgrade?
You might want to invest in the electronic book "Take Control of Upgrading to Snow Leopard" (http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/snow-leopard-upgrading). It's normally US$10, but until the end of this year all the Take Control titles are half off, so it would be $5.
    A few items of advice:
    - Be sure you have a complete backup in case the upgrade fails.
    - Verify your disk (and repair it if needed) before you upgrade.
    - Research your existing software at these Web sites for compatibility for OS X 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ , http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258 , and http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slcompat.html .
    - Any "classic (OS 9) software that you're running won't work under OS X 10.6.
Also just curious,am I going to lose everything that's on my computer now?
    No. But back up anyway.

    Thanks!!

    cstatham wrote:

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Apparently the registration information for that software was held within the user account of the prior user. If the prior user's account files are still there, you could try to move those settings from the old user's account to the new one. They're probably in "olduser"/Library/Preferences. Since the older user's files probably can't be viewed by the new user, you may need to log in as the old user and copy the needed files to the "Shared" user folder, then move them into the new user's area.
If you aren't successful doing that, you'll need to register the applications for the new user.
One more thing to consider: Some of the applications that the old user installed (for example, Firefox) will still be owned by the old user. The new user won't be able to update them unless the ownership is changed.
