Upgrading Mac OS X 10.3.7 to 10.3.9 (Update)
I also wanted to update from 10.3.7 to 10.3.9 for new versions of Safari, Address Book, ical, finder and others. But I want to know do I need to back up anything on my computer or should I be worried about the update making some programs not work properly. Is there anything that I need to know before downloading this update or any updates?

some update require to be installed in a certain order. As far as I know this is not documented by Apple. Therefore it seems to be the safest way to select all of them at once (assuming that Apple's installer app knows the correct order). A good procedure could look like this:
1. Repair permissions
(2. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo))
(3. Repair permissions)
4. Run software update and install ALL updates at once
5. Repair permissions

Recently upgraded Mac 24" to Lion (clean install) and now no external hard disks work with Time Machine.
installed new internal disk first with fresh 10.7.3 Lion software. Also upgrade ram to 4GB. Work great, super fast.
BUT.... my WD 1TB firewire400 external disks no longer work with the Lion enabled machine now.
FURTHER... I read somewhere that WD is problematic with Lion but Seagate was not... so I went and bought a new 3TB Seagate GoFlex.
When it didnt work properly either, I patiently searched and found a software/firward upgrade and applied.
I re-partitioned disk to extened/journaled standard, etc.
Then assigned the particition to Time Machine. Drive turned the blue/grey color, so I thought it would work.
But, it has now been in "preparing" mode in Time Machine for HOURS....
What is up Apple? So dissappointed. Ive read these type of problems are notorious with Lion and I wish I never upgraded.
Are you trying to make issues with External disks, to drive people to iCloud? That trick ont work in me. I will not reward bad behaviour Apple.
Please provide a fix... I wasted hours/days screwing around with this, instead of using the Mac for what its intended!Solved by Pondini, on another thread I opened...

Sounds like either:
A directory problem on your internal HD. Verify your internal HD, and Repair any other volumes being backed-up per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Something in OSX may be damaged. You've tried the "combo," so a fresh copy of OSX (that won't disturb anything else) would be worth a try (and you don't need a tech for that). See Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX. -
i am trying to upgrade Mac OSX from 10.7.4 10 .7.5 .But, the grey screen is coming for hours. I pressed the alt key and was taken to options viz. Restart to install MAC again, use time machine. I don't have back-up and so restarted to install MAC again. Can i cancel this now. I want my data to be secure. What should i do?
If you cancel an install there's no telling what state it will leave your Mac in. Let it finish or fail.
Then get a disk, it can even be a pocket drive if it's large enough and back up all your own data.
After that, boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
Restore from TM backup
Reinstall Mac OS X
Get help online
Disk Utility
First run Disk Utility Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported or reports "the disk cannot be fixed". Then, choose Reinstall OS X. -
Recently upgraded Mac OS to 10.5.5 - have an older G4 which is max'd out upgrade-wise - both processor and OS. At present Safari is 3.1.2. Itunes is 9.2.1. Itunes will not allow me to connect to store - says it requires Safari 4.0.3 - however, when I try to download Safari 4.0.3 or newer it says it requires an older version of the OS. What to do?
Update v10.5.5 to v10.5.8
Download and install the combo > Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update
Then restart your Mac.
That should update Safari for you to 5.0.6 and that should help with iTunes.
If necessary, after updating to v10.5.8, you can use the standalone Safari installer here > Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard -

Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x... It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.

As the previous poster indicated, you can purchase Leopard at Apple for $129. You may be able to purchase it for less at online sources such as Amazon. You will be purchasing the Full Retail Version, which would not include iLife 09 although it will include some earlier versions of applications like iPhoto and iTunes. If you purchase the boxed set it should include iLife 09. Check to be sure that it does.
What do you mean by losing "Classic Support" if I do the upgrade?
"Classic" refers to an emulator which runs OS 9 inside OS X. Some users have applications which need OS 9 or "Classic" to run. If you don't have any of those it will not be a concern for you.

No. It means that the OS X 10.5x will no longer run those applications that need OS 9 or the Classic Environment. If you have AppleCare your hardware will still be supported by Apple, and Leopard will continue to be supported.

Since installing Premiere Pro CC 2014 upgrade, Mac Pro jumpy video and freezes constantly. Worked perfectly before. Anyone else finding these issues? I'm running a quad core Mac Pro, so it's definitely not the hardware.
I've maxed out the memory assignment, but this isn't a memory problem per se.
It looks like certain Premiere Pro conditions are associated with a huge increase in kernel_task memory, zeroing out any available free memory. In my case it seems to be associated with effects applied to titles or jpgs or imported psd (Photoshop) files.
Program restart pulls kernel memory back to the 1.3gb normal size.
