Upgrading Panther to 10.3.9

I now have Panther disks in hand (retail) and am wondering if there is a preferred upgrade path to get to 10.3.9.
In Jag, I found that the sequence (where "SA" = "stand-alone"):
10.2.3 (retail install base) > 10.2.4 SA > 10.2.6 SA >10.2.8 Combined updater
gave the best results. Is Panther as persnickety about its upgrade path?
Thanks,
Allan

Hi Allan,
Just so I don't start to worry that I've lost more brain cells than I care to, I think Archive and Install appears when you press the "Options" button on the same screen that you choose which drive to install Panther onto. The install process will automatically create a "Previous Systems" folder on your drive. (I may have been working with MacDad too long, with associated memory loss!)
That said, Once your new drive is partitioned, you could clone your existing Jag system to it, unless those invalid key length errors are file errors that will get cloned as well.
Then again, a clean install from scratch has its appeal. I'm thinking of doing exactly that one of these days, to see if it cures the still occasional kernel panics.
Have fun!

  • Photoshop CS2 upgrade Panther to Tiger - Help please!

    Hi All,
I am doing a favour for my Aunt tomorrow and upgrading her G5 from Panther to Tiger.
She uses it mainly for Photoshop.
Is there anything i need to be wary of? I looked at the adobe web site and it seems to work on both systems, but do i need to download an update?
    Any advice, greatfully received!

Jacob, have a look at THESE posts.

  • UPGRADE  Panther or Tiger on Imac DV 400?

I am trying to determine which OS would be the better choice for my computer. I have been running 10.2.8 for a few years, but I just bought photoshop elements 4 and now I see I need 10.3 or better. I can use the educator discount from Apple for Tiger, or probably find an old retail disc for Panther, but I am wondering (for those who've tried with a similar system), which OS works better?
iMac DV 400 Mac OS X (10.2.x) original 10G hard drive, 576 ram

It really doesn't matter which one you decide to use. However, that original 10G hard drive must be getting a bit cramped. Without having the RAM up to full capacity (it will take two 512 MB chips), you are overly depending upon virtual memory, which needs lots of free hard drive space to write to. Unless you are doing frequent restarts and keeping lots of hard drive space freed up, you could start having problems, and possibly losing data.
Before considering upgrading the OS, it would be best to consider upgrading the hard drive and/or installing more RAM.

  • What steps to upgrade panther on imac

I want to upgrade an old imac 350mhz (Indigo, slot loader with 192 mb ram) with Panther retail disks. It's only for internet use by my infant children to access their school website etc.
I've carried out quite an exhaustive search over this forum to find an overview of the steps i need to action. So far i've added the latest firmware update, upgraded the hard drive to a 20gb drive, changed the pram battery and ordered another 512mb memory stick from Crucial.
Usually i'd zero write the hard drive and install panther on the clean disk. I'm worried that this will erase the firmware update. Is this right or need i not be worried?
If anybody can provide a link that easily identifies each step i would be very grateful.
I do not intend to leave OS 9.2.2 on the computer - Can this cause any issues further down the line such as if i need to boot from disk etc?

firmware dones't reside on the hard drive, its loaded to the motherboard, so it doens't matter what you do to the drive, the firmware update is there an nothing can change that.
getting rid of OS 9 shouldn't cause any problem, other than you won't be able to use classic in OS X.

  • Upgrade Panther to Tiger

    Dear all
We are currently running 10.3.9 and need to update some software. Therefore we need to upgrade the OS system.
I am concerned upgrading from Panther to Leopard will cause problems and would rather update to Tiger.
Could anyone advise me on the process and if my concerns are valid.
Would anyone suggest differently and think Panther is the best option.
Any links to further information or advice would be really useful.
    Many thanks in advance.

    sarah:
Your iMac G5 will easily meet both the minimum system requirements for Tiger and the technical specifications for Leopard. So you can go either way. Your computer will support up to 2 GB - 184-pin PC-3200 (400MHz) DDR SDRAM, but your 1 GB will work well for you, unless you decide to upgrade.
The main concern at this point would be whether you have third party applications that may not be supported by Leopard. In terms of which way to go, costwise the installation software for either OS will cost about the same, so, if everything else seems in order, you may be ahead going for Leopard.
Please do post back with further questions, or any specific concerns you may have.
    Good luck.

  • Upgraded Panther to Tiger: now Mail won't download email from Sympatico

    Hi there,
If someone wouldn't mind advising... I just ugraded my wife's powerbook from Panther to Tiger (10.4.9)... and even though her email settings are still the same (incoming server, outgoing server, etc.), Mail won't collect her email from the Sympatico site.
Do I have to get rid of her Mail prefs and re-boot? Or something? (if it's the former, which prefs exactly, and where are they?).
    thanks,
    Malcolm

You can always delete your account from Mail and re-create it... There are 2 kinds of account settings for a Sympatico account:
The "old ones" that have the same settings since Sympatico started 10 years ago:
    Username: b1**##
    Password: access password
    Incoming mail (POP3): pop6.sympatico.ca
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp1.sympatico.ca
Port server 25 for Outgoing (SMTP)
Port server 110 for Incoming (POP3)
The other Sympatico e-mail is the enhance one with MSN. The settings are differents and the authentification is different. Any new Sympatico accounts since June 2004 are on that new plaform:
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: e-mail password
    Incoming mail (POP3): pophm.sympatico.ca
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtphm.sympatico.ca
    Verify that your server is set to requires anthentiation with agin your Sympatico e-mail and Sympatico password;
Both servers, Outgoing and Incoming, require a secure connection (SSL)
If you are not sure witch is what try to login online at: http://www.sympaticomail.sympatico.ca it will tell you if can upgrade to new enhance e-mail or if you sign in like a Hotmail account if you are already enhance.
    I hope this help....

  • Upgrade Panther eMac to Tiger or Leopard?

    Hello,
Well its tax time and I just found out my 2008 tax software (H&R Block's Tax Cut) is no longer compatible with 10.3.9. For this reason and others (iTunes 8, etc.), I find myself thinking about upgrading my eMac. It's a 1GHz G4 with 640 MByte of RAM (512 + 128) and a 40 GByte Internal Hard Drive. There's also a 250 GByte Firewire drive that I use for backups. Since both Tiger and Leopard are both still available, which one would be appropriate for my eMac? Note if it wasn't for the lack of support for 10.3.9, I would be perfectly happy staying with Panther. The point being that I'm not looking for any new features. Also I noticed that allmac.com has eMac specific 10.4 installation DVD's for $49.95. Would this be appropriate for installing on this eMac? Thanks for any information.

    Jazz Man wrote:
Also, any opinion on the eMac 10.4 DVD offered by allmac.com (SFR-6080)?
It's always a gamble, using machine-specific OS X install discs on a Mac that they didn't ship with. But I have had very good luck with the eMac Tiger disc. I got one and installed it on my 1.25GHz eMac (orignally shipped with Panther). I also tried it on an old 500MHz iMac DV, and it worked too. So I'd say the chances of it working on your 1GHz eMac are pretty good. But YMMV, of course, so don't take my post as gospel!

  • Should I upgrade Panther or not? from OS 10.3.4 to 10.3.9?

For nearly two years I've been using iMovie 4.0.1 without any serious problems, only ones that I could sort out using helpful links from this forum. This includes a large quantity of iMovie edited movies burned sucessfully (with iDVD) to disks which work O.K. on my TV. I'm very apprehensive about upgrading because I remember reading in this forum that many people started getting iMovie problems after the upgrade (iMovie won't launch or 'crashes' etc.). One person, I recall, even said 'I wish I'd never upgraded' so it seems there are 'bugs' in the upgrade. However, I've been advised by my local Mac specialist that I should upgrade to the 10.3.9 version of Panther. Would I be best leaving things as they are or would I be better of with the upgrade (i.e. have the 'bugs' been sorted)?
    eMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.4)   iMovie 4.0.1 and iDVD 4.0.1
    eMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    eMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    eMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iMovie 4.0.1 and iDVD 4.0.1

Don't fix it if it ain't broken.
Unless you DO have problems, don't update.
Thank you , Lennart. I'll stay with 10.3.4.

  • IBook G3 Upgrades/Panther/Ebay Sale?

    Hello,
I am new to the discussion board and have a few questions to ask regarding my ibook G3 Indigo Firewire. A few years ago, my old Gateway finally bit the dust; I was sorta relieved it was time anyways. I needed another computer and my brother had purchased an ibook G3 Indigo Firewire with the original box, paperwork, and CD's. I showed some interest in the iBook, as I needed a computer to replace the Gateway. So, I bought it from him in 2003.
The computer got me through my four years of college, with no worries. However, it is a tad slow. I have been looking at the new macbooks but find it difficult to part with this old ibook. I have been looking through the discussion board for many weeks to determine what may be needed to upgrade this ibook. I have found some answers but still uncertain.
Am I a nut to try to upgrade this old ibook? I understand that even with some upgrades it will never perform as the new macbooks will. However, I have currently been using Tiger 10.4.8 and find it difficult to have more than two applications running at the same time.
So, I am either going to take Tiger off and put Panther on it and just leave it at that OR upgrade the original 10GB hard drive to around an 80GB hard drive and upgrade the RAM to 576MB from the current 320MB OR just put the ibook for sale on Ebay and pray I can find another Apple computer to purchase that is as enjoyable as this old iBook G3 Indigo Firewire.
My dad told me to just leave it alone, don't fix anything if it isn't broken and if the low performance is a bother just put Panther on it or sell it. However, he is not an Apple user nor an enthusiast.
I guess it would be nice to hear from other users in the discussions on any other thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations.
    Thanks!

I've had my ibook blueberry for the last couple years now and its been the best laptop i've ever had. It's reliable and the battery life is a good five hours or more. I do have a new intel imac but whenever i got out somewhere, the ibook comes with me. My problem is im going off to university in the fall and i need a computer to bring with me, my friends and family suggest a new laptop, but the ibook still works. My plan is to update the RAM to its max and possibly get a combo drive off ebay, i've already upgraded the harddrive to 40gb.
Personally, i would keep the ibook and upgrade the RAM and Harddrive to the best you can get your hands on and if you aren't to attached to Tiger, put panther on there b/c it seems to work great on my ibook. You can get an airport card for a fair price and a 512mb SO-DIMM shouldn't cost too much more than 100$, the 80gb harddrive would be the most expensive upgrade. The ibook clamshell was a great model and easily has another few years of life left in it, if you start to see that you need more speed however, as previously mentioned, it'd be best to get a new macbook and set the ibook as a backup computer.

  • MDD upgrade Panther to Tiger problem

I have 2 G4 MDD running 10.3.9 I wanted to upgrade them to Tiger to run CS3. The first machine upgraded normally the second one only gets to the checking hard drive screen +/_ a bit and the message comes on the screen that I need to restart the computer. All controls are locked out and only the power button will shut it down. I tried booting from the install disc by holding the C key down but it does the same thing. I have done this several times but it won't take it! Checking the install disc is ok no fault. Thoughts?

How can you be so sure?
First off, if you don't have at least 256 MB of RAM, upgrade the RAM*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
    According to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2191?viewlocale=en_US
The only 10.4 disc that will work with any MDD is the retail one which looks like * and does not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM.
If you are using the correct disc, verify the drive you have in your system is indeed a DVD drive. If it is a DVD drive, verify the clock battery has been replaced in the last 4 years.
If the clock battery has been replaced, zap the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If zapping the PRAM doesn't work, then you may have to clean the optical drive, or replace it.

  • Upgrading Panther to Tiger through imaging

Is there a way to upgrade an existing Apple computer that is running Mac OS x.3.9 to Tiger. I have the licensing.

    Jerry:
To get the old library up and running on the new computer all you need to do is copy that iPhoto Library folder intact into the Pictures folder on your new computer. Then reset the ownership and permissions on that folder and its contents as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
Now when you launch iPhoto 6 it will tell you it needs to update the library. Go ahead and do so. That should give you a V6 library.

  • Upgrading Panther to Tiger & iPhoto 4 to iPhoto 6

I did a complete bootalble carbon copy backup of my Mac HD to an External HD. Did a "erase and Install"(erase Mac HD, and clean install of Tiger). Installed iPhoto 6. BTW, I changed user names on the new install cuz my wife never uses the mac and I go tired of trying to maintain two user accounts while using Panther. New user name is Jerry. Old user name was Shari. I have admin. priveledges onto old Back up Ext. HD as well as new installed tiger on mac hd.
Everything has been going pretty well. Got he network and printers going. Reinstalled misc programs like Elements, and Canon Scanner, without problem. Imported iTunes music.
I am having trouble bringing the iPhoto 4 pictures from my external HD into the iPhoto 6 Mac HD. I tried iPhoto's "Import to Library" from the External to the internal HD, but just got a spinning gear and had to cancel. I tried dragging the iphoto 4 Library to the iPhoto 6 library, but the pictures don't show up in iphoto 6 and now i'm afraid I mucked things up in my pictures>iPhoto Library. There is another iPhoto below the iPhoto Library.
    ie. pictures>iphoto library>iphoto library>(all my iphoto 4 picts from 2000 thru 2006 + albums, etc.)
I've read of holding down the option key while opening iphoto library folder below iPhoto library and it gives me the option of Create or choose library, but I really don't know if this is what I need. What I want is to basically restore my iPhoto 4 pictures on the External Drive to iPhoto 6 on my Mac HD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Re-Installing 10.3.1 then upgrading to 10.3.9

I'm using Panther 10.3.9 and my hard drive has been acting wack, so I've backed up my files and in an effort to salvage my 2004 eMac I want to wipe the hard drive and re-install Panther.
However, this would take me back to 10.3.1, and my question is: Will software updates still be available for me to upgrade Panther to 10.3.9, or is all that dead and gone now since Panther is two OS's old?

    daftboychemist:
First Aid has not been able to fix the problem and yeah. Wiping and reinstalling is my option.
I take it your computer is experiencing some kind of directory issue. Do you mind sharing the message you get from Disk Utility?
To the best of my knowledge no eMac was released with OS X 10.3.1, or am I mistaken? Did the install disk come with your computer, or is it a Full Retail Version? I ask because you may have difficulty installing from the disk if it is specific to computer different from the computer to which you are trying to install.
Here is the chart of available updates for Panther. If you are able to successfully install from the disk install disk you have, you can probably download and install the 10.3.9 Combo Update, Repair Disk Permissions, the run Software Update.
    Good luck.

  • Help with OS 10.4.7 on Beige G3

    Here's the problem:
I upgraded Panther (10.3.9) on my G3 box (Rev A, XLR8 G4 upgrade CPU, Sonnet tempo trio usb/fw/ata133, 640M RAM) to Tiger 10.4 with the help of Xpostfacto 4.0. Upgraded great and ran 10.4.0 just fine. Software update ran and installed 10.4.7 combo update and now it won't boot OS X. I rebooted into OS 9 and launched xpostfacto again and told it to boot from the 10.4.7 partition (I've got the original MacHD with my insurance copy of 10.3.9 and an 80GB disk on the trio card ata133 partioned into a classic/OS9 volume and an 8gb Mac OSX volume on which the 10.4.0 was installed and upgraded). Again no luck.
Does anyone know if 10.4.7 can run, even with the help of Xpostfacto? If not, what is the latest Tiger version that will run? Right now, I'm back to 10.3.9 running from my original HD that I can clone to the other OS X partition and start over, but if there's a tweak I can apply, I'd appreciate the advice.
    MDD Dual 1.25 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Mac Mini, G4 Powerbook

What the heck does "optimizing system perfomance" do anyhow?
From what I recall it is similar to what Norton Speed disk would do: OSX spreads files across the hard drive and leaves room between each so that if there is heavy computational read/writes going on with an application, there's a nearby space for the virtual memory.
One of my first Panther installs back in January failed due to my too big 160GB slave drive being on the ATA bus. When I went to delete the first install, I rebooted the hardware with an ancient copy of Norton Utilities 4.0.
On a lark, since it was going to be deleted anyhow, I took a peek with Speed Disk at the state of the freshly installed (and failed) OSX. It was fragmented and spread EVERYWHERE across the partition! None of the nice and tidy packed into a continuous group of addresses. Nope.
On closer inspection and some reading, that havoc is normal with the OSX as it's based on the UNIX that came out of the universities. Definitely not a hard drive space issue as it would be with folks on their PC's at home, but a speed concern from the days of mainframes.
How much optimizing a program gets I guess depends on how important to the Core Services it is. Some of the items just install, like a few games I have but QuickTime took almost 10 minutes to sort it's position out when I updated on my install two weeks ago.
I'll wager that with the combo update you took in Tiger, it was just too much file shuffling at once for the computer to keep track of.
    Deb.

  • Uninstall leopard on my quicksilver g4 and reinstall tiger

I have run into serious problems with leopard on my quicksilver mac. I get the kernal panic. I have tried disk warrior and it shuts down.I tried to reinstall tiger, which ran perfectly in the past. It tells me that I have to upgrade panther to 10.3. and then upgrade to tiger. I had been running Tiger for 2 years but it doesn't seem to know that. I can't get into the computer to do this. I repurchased Panther and tried to reinstall it and it says I can not do that. There was a system error. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

It is very likely that your problem is not with the OS version you are running but with your hard drive. Try booting from an installer optical disk (preferably the Leopard retail one) & instead of running an installer, run Disk Utility from its "Utilities" menu. Try running its "Repair Disk" function on your internal hard drive. If this hangs or is unable to repair all problems it finds, you will probably have to reformat the drive. *Note that this will erase all data on it, so you must have a backup of at least your user files or you will lose everything!*
    Some background info:
Disk Warrior is a fine utility but like any other such utility, you must run a version of it that is compatible with the Tiger/Leopard file system to prevent problems. Additionally, if you try to boot the computer from a Disk Warrior CD, it must include an OS capable of booting your Mac model. Refer to the Disk Warrior web site for more info about this.
If your Tiger installer disk says that you must upgrade the existing OS, it is what is known as an "upgrade" disk, not a full or retail Tiger installer. It would not tell you that you have to "upgrade panther to 10.3" because 10.3 is Panther. It is telling you that it is only capable of installing Tiger (10.4) over Panther (10.3). Thus, if you have any other OS version such as Tiger or Leopard installed, it will tell you that it can't do the install.
All retail & some other installer disks offer several install options, depending on what they find installed on the target drive. See for example Installing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard for more info about this. The option & target drive you choose determines if the installation is possible or not.
