Upgrading Safari on Leopard

I am using Safari 5.0.6 on OS 10.5.8. It's running slow so I thought I would upgrade. Can I use Safari 6 on Leopard or should I download Safari 3.2.1 for Leopard?

Safari 6
Safari 6 comes bundled with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8
Safari 6 for OS X Lion 10.7  was released through Softwere Update.
Safari 6 for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was not released

  • Upgraded to snow leopard, now safari scrolls a page down when space bar is hit and sometimes crashes.  Any ideas for a fix?

I just upgraded to the new snow leopard, now my Safari is acting loopy.  At times, the page will scroll down when I hit the space bar.  As I type this discussion the screen isn't paging down, but if I go to the tab where I have facebook loaded and hit the space bar, it acts as a page down key.  I've had safari crash about 5 times tonight for no apparent reason.  The delete key sometimes will act as a page back key.  I really have no idea whats going on.
I've had keyboards go wacko on me before due to something being spilled on them or a wireless problem, but this keyboard is a wired keyboard and nothing was spilled on it.  It's rather new and I'm quite certain it's not a keyboard issue.
No settings have been changed on the computer.  The only thing different today from yesterday, is the fact that I upgraded to snow leopard.
    Help would be pretty sweet.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • I recently upgraded to OSX Leopard, now safari won't work at all.

After installing successully the OSX 10.5.6 on two of my HDs, I went to "Software Update" and received 7 updates.  It was late, and I accepted the install, and went to bed.  this morning it [safari] doesen't work any way I can think to use it.
I updated from OSX 10.4.11, and still have that HD it was installed on in the computer.  I also installed two new HDs along with the upgrades.  I am attempting to use the Safari on one of the new HD's, not the one on the older HD.
    I have tried the following:
--downloading [thru firefox] Safari for Leopard and installing successfully
    --perusing these forums
I'm pretty misearble about the whole thing..  any assistance will be appreciated.
    Any ideas?

  • I'm still using Snow Leopard because heard too many horror stories about upgrading to Lion. But I can't upgrade Safari unless I upgrade OS. Is Mavericks any better than Lion?

I'm still using Snow Leopard OS because I heard too many horror stories about people upgrading their OS to Lion.  But I can't upgrade Safari anymore unless I upgrade the OS. I get messages constantly telling me I need to upgrade my web browser, and have increasing problems correctly viewing pages (like L.A. TImes, NY TImes) because Safari needs upgrading.
I can't really tell what the advantages are to upgrade to OS Mavericks or OS Yosemite because it seems most are intended for mobile apps, and I only use my desktop.
My last upgrade to SNow Leopard wiped out 2/3 of my iPhoto collection. No idea why and no fix. Macs used to be the epitome of compatibility for upgrades — not anymore.
What are my options? What issues would I encounter if I upgrade OS to Mavericks or to Yosemite? WHat are likely problems, advantages and disadvantages?
Thanks for any help sent my way.

If you do want to upgrade.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • Preview Pane in Safari after upgrading to Snow Leopard

Safari 4.0.3 no longer shows attachments previews. This is only since upgrading to Snow Leopard. So, for example, if I am trying to attach a jpg, unless I know the specific name I can't preview it to make sure it is the correct one. The pane will not open. I am not sure what to do about this! Very frustrating. I just switched from Firefox bc it was too slow and it was crashing constantly. Is Apple going to fix the preview pane bug, or is it something I am doing wrong?

We found a workaround that dealt with the issue quite well with our workflow. Downgrading our systems from OS X 10.6.7 to 10.6.6 was not a realistic option. Your milage may vary if you have hundreds or thousands of OpenType fonts or troublesome Type 1 Postcript fonts or a very large number of OS X 10.6.7 workstations to manage.
We found that if we converted the OpenType fonts to TrueType fonts, then the problem went away. This may also work if you convert Type 1 Postscript fonts to TrueType. I posted some suggestions for how to do that in the "main" thread on the problem here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13323072

  • Trouble with Safari and keychain after upgrade to Snow Leopard

I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  Previously in Safari (with Leopard), when logging in to a website, I entered the first character of my login and, depending on the settings in Keychain, the login/password was autofilled or I was prompted for my Keychain Access password and then it autofilled. This worked great because no one could use my laptop and be able to log in to sensitive websites without my Keychain Access password. And, because I have multiple accounts on some websites, I could choose which login ID to use based on the first character. I don't know if Safari was set to autofill or not, but I suspect not because I never wanted autofill.
After I upgraded to Snow Leopard, Safari would not connect to Keychain at all. I figured out I had to check Safari's autofill User Names and Passwords box in order for it to recognize Keychain. But now it autofills whenever I land on a website login page, even though the Keychain items are set to require my Keychain password. Further, for those websites that have multiple accounts, Safari is autofilling the one that is first listed in Keychain.
What do I need to do for Safari to use Keychain Access without immediately autofilling (like it did with Leopard)?

Yes, thank you. I have done that on most of them and it works well.  My frustration is that the autofill in Safari seems to be the only way to engage Keychain.  When I don't select autofill in Safari, I can't engage Keychain at all (without manually opening it and viewing an individual key).  I'd like to be able to activate Keychain selectively as I did in Leopard.
For those sites where I have multiple accounts, I have discovered that if I deny the first pop-up from Keychain, I can then delete the autofilled login and enter the first character of the one I want, and the pop-up appears again. It's just frustrating to have to take those extra steps.

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Maverick in order to download Safari 6?

I'd like to download Safari 6 but I don't think I have enough memory (2 GB) on my MacBook with Snow Leopard to download Maverick, which apparently I need to do in order to get Safari 6. Is this correct?

You are correct that you have the minimum amount of RAM tp install Mavericks of 2 GB. Most everyone says 4 GB is a more realistic amount.
Why do you feel that you need to upgrade Safari?

  • Recently safari has been quit unexpectedly I've upgraded to snow leopard and I have the latest safari software. What can I do about it to rectify the problem?

Recently Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. I've dumped my cache several times and even upgraded to snow leopard.l I have the latest version of Safari 5.0.5. The situation has gotten quite annoying and been going on for about three weeks now. What can I do to fix this short of bringing it to someone?
I restart and it works fine for  awhile and then it quits again. I either restart and/or dump the cache AGAIN! This is getting quite tedious. I've even taken the battery out and reinstalled it. Nothing seems to stop the quitting.

You don't need anything higher than OSX 10.6.8 to run iTunes 11.  iTunes system requirements - http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
You can't upgrade without more RAM.

  • I upgraded to snow leopard, since then safari does open in the dock but does not load as set in my preferences and the title page remains blank even though I have set-up a home page. I completely re-initialised safari, but no change.

I upgraded to snow leopard, since then safari does open in the dock (white dot) but does not startup as set in system preferences. Also, if I open safari, the title page remains blank even though I have set a home page under safari's preferences. I re-initialised safari, but no change.

Having put my home-page under "new windows open with home-page" solves the "blank title page problem".
One problem left: "safari" does not startup automatically as set in system preferences, whereas "mail", also set for startup DOES startup

  • Does install of snow leopard automatically upgrade safari

does install of snow leopard automatically upgrade safari? or, automatically include latest, newest version of safari?

    From the Wikipedia Safari page.
"Safari 6.0 was previously known as Safari 5.2 until Apple announced the change at WWDC 2012. The stable release of Safari 6 coincided with the release of OS X Mountain Lion on July 25, 2012, and is integrated into the OS. As Apple integrated it with Mountain Lion, it is no longer available for download from the Apple website or other sources. Apple released Safari 6 via Software Update for users of OS X Lion. It has not been released for OS X versions prior to Lion or for Windows, and Apple has not made any statements either confirming or denying future updates at this time."

  • I upgraded Safari in my Mac (10.6.8 Leopard) but the new version does not work with my system so that I now have not a working browser. How can I solve the problem and/or install back my previous Safari version?

I have upgraded Safari in my Mac, but the new Safari does not work with my system. So I find myself without any working browser. How can I solve this problem and/or install my previous Safari version?

Reinstall Safari 5.1.10 for OS X 10.6.8: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1569. Might do the trick.
But, frankly, I don't think that simply reinstalling the old Safari will work because of all the peripheral, under the hood changes that happen when you upgrade from one version of Safari to another. Reinstalling 5.1.10 may be insufficient to turn back the clock. (This is the moment where a Time Machine or another form of full backup would save your bacon.)
While you're getting a copy of Safari 5.1.10, get a copy of Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/desktop/), too, so that you have an alternate browser to use as you're sorting matters.

  • Problems with wireless mouse/keyboard after upgrade to snow leopard

    Hi!
I am wondering if someone has some insight for me.  I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I have been using a Logitech S 530 wireless keyboard/mouse combo for a few years.  I am now having problems with them irratically.
    1. When on line and the page is large, I often cannot move the blue bar at the bottom of the screen to scroll to the right. What happens is like a stutter; as I am dragging the bar, it and the page shake rapidly side-to-side. Sometimes, I can drag it to the right, but as soon as I let go, it snaps back to the left.  This does not happen in Word.
    2. When in boxes with dropdown options, only occasionally does that happen.  The dropdown either doesn't show, or it flashes quickly.  Sometimes it will work after clicking many times. This happens with dropdown menus as well as search boxes that have dropdown choices for previous searches or suggested searches a la Google.
    3. When I use my function key or mouse to display all windows, I can't choose the one I want.  Regardless of which one I put my cursor over, only the left-most one is highlighted and comes to the front when I click.
    4. There is a varying lag. Sometimes the system is responsive, and other times there is a lag of varying lengths before the system responds to the mouse action (click, drag, zoom, etc.)
    5. For a while, my left mouse button wouldn't work.  I reconfigured it, that seems to have done the trick.
    6. Today, I can't open any of the menu items on Firefox.  I can move the cursor there, but when I click on any of them, nothing happens. This is okay in Safari.
I have disconnected and reconnected the usb, restarted the computer, and tried to reinstall the software for the mouse and keybord. When I did that, I got a message saying it couldn't install on the current OS, so I went to Logitech and dowloaded and installed the latest version (which indicated it is for OS X 10.6.8.)
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem, but it started sometime after I upgraded.  Thanks in advance for any help!
    Donna

Update all your third party software  or uninstall and reinstall 10.6 versions.
If your going to 10.7, be warned a lot of software will not work at all and your 10.5 era machine will be slow, perhaps even have problems as 10.7 is problematic on older hardware.

IMO save for a new 10.8 machine after this summer.

  • Connecting to server after upgrading to Snow Leopard

I'm trying to connect to a hard drive wirelessly which is connected to a router. I used to have Leopard and connected fine by going Finder > Connect to Server  and inputting:
    smb://FND/Media
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I haven't been able to connect. I've tried connecting using the same address as above and also with:
    smb://192.168.1.11/Media
Both open a dialog box asking for user name and password. As no password is setup just hitting enter should work (it did on Leopard). However, this time it brings up an error message saying:
    Connection Error
There was an error connecting to the server “192.168.1.11”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
Also when trying to browse for the server it doesn't appear. I'm not sure if it did on Leopard as I never needed to look for it. I can get into the hard drive by typing the IP address into Safari, but just can't connect to it.

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • Why can I not open PDF files or upgrade Safari

Upgraded to snow leopard, no PDF files will open. Tried upgrading Safari from 5.0.5 but message said this computer requires 10.5. what can I do ?

Safari 5.1.10 for Snow Leopard :
    System Requirements
Mac OS X v10.6.8 Snow Leopard
If you have 10.6.3, you need to update to 10.6.8 before attempting to install Safari 5.1.10.  Use Software Update from your Apple menu, which should take care of Safari, OS X 10.6.8  & any required security updates too. Backup first, in case of problems - although your files & applications shouldn't be affected.

  • Apache won't work after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Today I have upgraded to Snow Leopard. Previously I have used 10.5.6 (Leopard). In Safari I get the following message: "Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost/” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again." Does anybody know how to fix this issue? Thank you.

    HI,
Do you have web sharing turned on?
    System Preferences/Sharing.
Try posting in the Mac OS X Technology Forum also.
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=735&start=0
Also, did you repair permissions after the upgrade? If not..
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
