Upgrading the iMac G4 + Other questions

I am very very fond of these type of iMacs so I am looking to buy one from ebay!
I was wondering if it is at all possible to:
A. Upgrade the video memory to 256mb
B. Upgrade the processor to a Intel Core 2 Duo (If so, how?)
C. Upgrade the Bus Speed
Will the Airport card that supports 802.11n work with this iMac?
Also, I am a little uncertain about this so I will ask... Do these have 256mb of RAM already built in? So you can add addition RAM too? What is the most RAM it can support?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I absolutely agree. It's a real shame that they stopped producing this design. Still I've got my spares ready to keep my 20" going and it's easily fast enough for Office/Internet use.
kind regards

Is it possible to upgrade the iMac G3 (1998) to an iMac with Mac OS X Lion or Mountain Lion ?

The 1998 iMac predates the introduction of Firewire.  So yes, it is limited to 10.3.9.  Sonnett did offer an upgrade to the iMac to allow it to have Firewire.  I don't know if this enabled 10.4 or not.   XPostfacto also offered unsupported 10.4 for older iMacs.   But Spotlight and Dashboard are very slow if you can't upgrade to a minimum of 256 MB of RAM, and preferably 512MB of RAM.   Look at http://www.everymac.com/ to find out your Max.

    Hey Oynkus,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You state you updated your iMac to OS X 10.8.5.  Did you update iTunes as well?
If so, you may find the calendar sync options under Info.
Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad - iTunes Help
Sync contacts and other info with iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad
Connect your device to your computer.
Click the device button, then click Info.
Select the items you want to sync.
    Click Apply.

  • Upgrading the iMacs

Hi. I'm looking to upgrade from my Mac Mini to an iMac and I wonder how easy is it to upgrade the iMacs and what am I able to upgrade?
I am looking to pickup a 27" iMac from the UK online store with as low a spec as possible and upgrade it myself. I figure I can save myself hundreds if not thousands of pounds
    Any ideas?

Upgrading computers every time a new one comes out is a losing game really because they come out some frequently. I wouldn't get too upset, if your computer does what you want it to and continues to do so then forget about it. When the computer no longer serves your needs that's the time to start looking to upgrade.
As far as upgrading your existing machine, well good luck with that. As has been stated (many times) the only user upgrades iMacs are intended to do is the RAM. If your machine is covered by AppleCare or still under warranty when you try to upgrade items like GPU's and CPU's that jeopardizes your warranty. Of course if you don't care about the warranty then that point is moot. There is contention about what components are upgradeable within iMacs, the only things I've seen for sure that are are RAM and internal HD's however as stated even the HD's aren't intended to be user upgradeable. For someone that doesn't mind taking apart a reasonable complex machine a HD is doable, for the faint of heart no way. As far as GPU's and CPU's, at the least it's would probably be difficult to source the parts and if you can probably cost prohibitive.

  • Will the new iPhone 4s be compatible with iMac version OSX 10.6.8, or will I need to upgrade the iMac operating system?

Will the new iPhone 4s be compatible with my 5 or 6 year old iMac that I upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.8)? Or will I need to upgrade the operating system on the iMac?

go to apple.com/iphone and look up tech specs.
    You'll find this:
    Mac System Requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
    OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.5 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
Apple ID (required for some features)
    Internet access

  • I have a older imac and whin i try to update from 10.6.8 i says incompatible can i upgrade the imac to work with mavericks ?

can i upgrade my imac 4,1 to run mavricks ?

    No. You can try Lion:
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Upgradeing the Aironet 1200 - General questions.

It appears that I have a VxWare 1200 Aironet WAP. The Firmware version may be 5.02.03. The SN: is AMB0705M2UL. There are two others of the same age.
We VPN through the device. My research on Cisco www shows that there is a VxWare upgrade needed followed by an upgrade to an IOS (if I am understanding the situation).
My question is should I do this and why. Security for the device is acchieved by using the VPN tunnel.

    Hi
From Vxwork to IOS can give you some features like:
Support of G radio, WPA and WPA 2 and much more.
Though I have seems VxWorks devices to be much more stable, so if security is not a concern and if you are happy with the basic wireless features you can stay with VxWorks.

Will 8GB of ram support the iMac 2009 Model Number (MC015LL/B)

Yes. Try OWC, DataMem, or Crucial.com for suitable RAM. OWC should have video tutorials to help you. Consult your computer's user manual for assistance. I believe it's in Chapter 3 - Adding Memory.

  • Upgrading the speed and other stuff on mac air

hello i was wondering how i can make my early 09 mac air faster since i cant upgrade rams also can i upgrade the internal fan video card anything? thank you

The Air cannot be upgraded. The CPU and RAM are mounted directly on the logic board and it has no graphics card - it uses a graphics subsystem that is part of the CPU. A larger hard drive can be installed but that is the only hardware upgrade possible. If your Air has a standard hard drive upgrading to an SSD would offer some speed increase but I'm not sure that is a cost efficient solution. If your hard drive is more than 85-90% full, deleting some old/unused files could make things a bit better. Certainly returning to Snow Leopard would give your computer a big speed bump.

  • Applying filter to a section of the screen? other question:

Ok, I've used the mask to isolate one part of the screen to which I applied a blur filter. So now, The people near the lence are out of fucus and then become in focus. What I'm trying to do is: as the people in front get in focus, the people in the back get out of focus (blurred). I'm trying to use the "add/substracte" function of the mask, but it doesn't seem to be animatable. I was thinking about making a duplicate of the background and the mask and animating both.

Or use the compound blur filter and use the shape tool to fashion a graphic for the area you want to blur and dump it into the shape well...

  • I upgraded my imac to OS Mountain Lion and now the Seagate Goflex external HDD is not recognised

I upgraded the iMac to Mountain Lion and it does not recognize the Seagate Goflex External HDD that I was working from earlier. I do not want to buy a special program since the Goflex HDD was working on both mac and Windows without any problems before the upgrade. The Goflex HDD is still working on my Macbook pro so there is no problem in the HDD. Is there something that needs to be activated... Please help

A bit more info for those of you reading this.... the problem seemed to be in iTunes. For each connected device , if I clicked on the Photo option I could no longer select the second radio button for limiting the photos by Events, Albums, etc.  It was an all or nothing deal. But selecting all would cause the error.
So I had read the other forum posts about the "&" symbol being the cause of the problem.  I went through iPhoto and made all of the changes. It did not work. I then looked at iTunes, using the AlbumData2.xml file listed in the other forums as a reference.  I found one album with the "&". I edited that one.  Still would not work.  So then I spent 3 hours on the phone with AppleCare last week. I talked with 4 different advisors. None of them had heard about the "&" error from the forums. We tried everything in iPhoto including repair and rebuild.  Finally we created a whole new library and reimported my master photos from my original one.  Using this option would allow me to now check off that radio button in iTunes.  BUT... I now lost all of my albums and events and would need to rebuid them.  I was not happy. They agreed and we set up time to talk this week.
So today I talked with AppleCare again. They now have more info and said the problem has to do with iTunes and the new iPhoto 9.4. It does not like the "&" symbol anywhere in either iPhoto or iTunes. So they now have me going through everything in my iTunes library. Genre is OK but any other item cannot have " & ". I have several dozen to edit and will do it over the weekend and then restore my original iPhoto Library and see if I can finally get it all to sync. I will let you know how I make out, but apparently you need to eliminate " & " from every entry in iTunes and iPhoto.
Quality control is not up to par with Apple these days.

  • I am trying to Upgrade my iMac running 10.6 to the latest OSX Combo upgrade... however on restart my iMAC 'panics' - crashes?... i have seen some discussion on this but no resolution so far that works for me... any ideas?

    Hi all,
This is proving somewhat frustrating. End goal is to upgrade the iMAC to Lion. However, in order to use the downloaded version of Lion Install package, i have first to upgrade my iMAC from OSX 10.6 (i.e. I need at least 10,7 to get access to the APP store).
However, whenever I have tried to upgrade, then on restart the machine 'panics'.
At first I thought it was some form of malware and erased and repartioned the disk and then re-installed. However, this did not solve the problem.
Is there a problem with post 10.6 upgrades ?
best regards and thanks to anyone who might offer suggetsions to help.
    Buck.

    Hi Paul,
I am using Snow Leopard 10.6 (re-installing as we speak). on an iMac.
Have verified startup disk as well as verified permissions.
Have cleared the PRAM (using option-command-P-R keys and waiting for the chimes).
Only peripherals are an apple usb keyboard and an apple usb mouse connected via keyboard usb adapter.
    Machine runs fine at 10.6
problem only occurs when i try to reboot after installing the Combo upgrade.
p.s. i also have a MACBook Pro and have had no similar issues with that. So am guessing it is somethign related specifically to iMac hardware/firmware ?
    ciao, Buck.

  • Upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion from snow leopard does this mean i can upgrade my imac as well for the same price? And will it mess it up?

upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion from snow leopard does this mean i can upgrade my imac as well for the same price? And will it mess it up?

You can upgrade the iMac for no extra charge - sign into the App Store there, download and install 10.8.
I recommend that you make a backup (Time Machine is probably the easiest method) before you install, and make sure that you are not using any applications that are incomptible with 10.8 (eg Office 2004) - other than that, it should go smoothly.

  • Any way to upgrade the processor?

I have a 15" aluminum PowerBook G4 with the 1.67GHz processor, and it's starting to show its age. Programs are running more slowly, and I can't do a lot with video editing/playing (which I would like to be able to do). It's been a great laptop and I really want to get as much use out of it as possible (especially considering the prices of the new MacBooks). I've maxed out the ram and am replacing the hard drive, but would really be interested in upgrading the processor...if that was possible (and worth the money).
I read that Daystar Technology used to offer processor upgrades for the PowerBook G4s, and they seemed to get pretty good reviews. However, it looks like those upgrades were discontinued awhile ago. Would a processor upgrade even be worth the money? If so...is there any way to procure an upgrade?
    Thank you!
    Sarah
    <Post Relocated by Host>

Sarah, I question why your PB is running more slowly. Granted, I don't run Leopard on my 1.33 GHz PB but movie editing is sufficiently swift with Tiger, as is everything else. If your HD is getting low on breathing room that might explain your slowness.
I'm with Brody. Newer hard disk drives are faster and far less expensive than they were when your PB was built, so get the biggest one your wallet can handle. I would definitely avoid attempting to upgrade the CPU. Other system limitations would make your return on that investment unattractive.
Upgrades are worthwhile only to a point. More RAM and HD space are always better, but I consider Tiger to be the optimal OS for my G4 Powerbooks even though they meet the requirements for 10.5. Even my 500 MHz G3 iMac runs Tiger acceptably fast. Ultimately, it's the desire to run more capable applications (like iLife 09) that renders older systems functionally obsolete. If you find that Leopard runs too slowly on your PB, might you consider moving back to Tiger?
