Upgrading to leapord sucessfully in regard to fcp.

I am going to be upgrading my MAC Pro to leapord soon. As final cut is my main application run on the computer, what is my best way to upgrade and not wreck anything? A clean install then reinstall the studio? Or should I just do the upgrade as I have all the latest FCP downloads( I have no Projects out at the time, so loss of projects is no concern to me)
thks!

Oh no! More big dollars! Please. My current harddrive favorite is the Seagate 7200.11 with a 32mb cache. I just bought another one at newegg for a little over a hunert bucks. 500 gigabytes for around a hunnert bucks and the terabyte drives are getting cheaper per gigabyte yet.
Too rich? I remember not long ago a 9 gig removable drive for a Protools rig was $1000.00 so if you don't want to spend anymore money, take up a different line of work and send me your MacPro, I'll give it a good home.

  • Upgrading To Leopard While Working On An FCP Project

Working in FCP 5 in Tiger - thinking of upgrading to Leopard - any issues reported with FCP when upgrading to Leopard?
    Thanks

Only upgrade if your not in the middle of a project. Sometimes things don't go as smooth as they should. Also, backup your main drive and settings to another drive before upgrading, so if you need to, you can downgrade to where you were, (just a word of caution, learned from experience.)
Personally, I have not upgraded yet, due to some third party software that doesn't play nice with Leopard yet and that I depend on daily. As far as I can see Leopard works quit well with it's own Apple software products.
You will also loose OS 9 classic mode under Leopard, it isn't supported in Leopard.
If your wondering, I did upgrade and then almost immediately downgraded after my third party software stop working.

  • Motion 4 (upgrade) Templates Taking Longer to Render in FCP?

I've noticed that templates created in the Motion 4 upgrade when used in FinalCut -- more specifically those with text -- take much longer to render... in fact, up to 10x longer.
I have text-only templates used for the lower-third, after trying to figure out why a 10-second sequence was taking 12 minutes to render in FCP, I removed the video-track containing the Motion template, which result in a render-time of about 20 seconds.
Using a very-similar text-only template from Motion 3 (created before the upgrade) resulted in a negligible increase in render time. So I opened the .motn file in the upgraded Motion 4, exported as a new template... and the render-time jumped back to 12 minutes. Same text, same transition, but the Motion 4 created template significantly increased render-time in FCP.
Is anyone else seeing this? And is there a solution/fix/workaround?

I want to use some Motion-designed templates for some specific text transitions (nothing too crazy, but which is much more simple to use in a template, for a regally occurring webisode project) in a lower-third.
A 20 second clip with a "Text-A template" saved from Motion 3, takes less than one minute to render in FCP.
The same clip, with the same "Text-A template" saved from Motion 4, takes nearly six minutes to render in FCP... with the same render settings.
It appears to be only related to templates that contain text... I've not noticed any new slowness with templates that contain drop-zones for photos or video.

  • What Is The Legal Situation With Upgrades And The Original Copy Of FCE/FCP?

Imagine you have an original copy of FCE/FCP.
You buy an Upgrade and of course use your original serial number to make it work.
You then register the new product with Apple.
Can you then sell your original version and keep your legal entitlement to use the Upgrade?
This question arises from an advert I have just seen on eBay where it looks as though the seller is doing precisely that (if you read their reasons for selling).
    Final Cut Suite
    Ian.

    Hi Ian,
The answer is NO. It would not be legal for either the seller or the purchaser (assuming the seller purchased & applied an Upgrade to his original installation instead of purchasing a whole new copy with its own full license).
In the packaged software world, when you purchase an Upgrade you are only purchasing a license to upgrade from a previously legally owned & installed copy of the software. When you enter the serial number of the previous copy you are identifying that copy. Regardless of whether or not Apple actually tracks the serial numbers, your upgrade license requires you to be the continuing owner of the original license in order for your upgrade license to be valid.
Under the circumstances as they appear in this eBay transaction, the seller would legally lose both their original and upgrade licenses and the purchaser would be illegally installing a previously licensed software package.
The only way to conduct a legal transfer of license would be to deinstall the original software before selling. Of course, that means you would no longer have the software to use yourself.

  • Upgrade to QT7 Pro for use with FCP 4.5 & DSP3 ???

I have read throught the material on QT7 & H.264 but am undecided. (ie; confused).
I have OS 10.3.9; Quicktime 6.5.2 Pro; FCP 4.5 HD (with the MPEG2 playback component); Compressor 1.2.1 and DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2.
Is there an advantage or point in upgrading to Quicktime 7 Pro with my current setup?
The only advantage I can see is H.264; but I don't think this is useable in DSP3 even when using the "standard" setting for DVD. (Sorry if that's wrong, as I said I've read the material but it's somewhat vague). I suppose I'm wonderfing if you can use H.264 in DSP3 to create smaller files and thus put more material on a standard format DVD.
    Any advice or thought welcome.

    Thanks David.
I kept researching and reading after putting up the post.
Upgrading to OS 10.4 & DSP4 & FCP5 to get Compressor 2 is just to expensive for me at this time.
And after much thought upgrading to QT7 for h.264 just to watch videos online, (and not having broadband thats a very time consuming process), I think I'll just stay with what I have at the moment which works well.
Many Thanks for the feedback and confirmation.

  • Can I upgrade a FCP4 purchased in UK to FCP Studio 5.1 here in the USA

I've noticed in the fine print of Apple's FCP Studio 5.1 upgrade form that they say the item being upgraded must have been purchased in USA or Canada. This is from the USA web site.
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
I live in USA. So if I purchase a UK version of FCP4 (via ebay), will I be able to upgrade it to FCP Studio here in the US? Or, will I be forced to somehow upgrade it via the UK Apple site and sending the original discs back to the UK?
Anyone try this and knows for sure how it works?

    Thanks Jerry,
I took your advise and called Apple (don't know why I didn't think of that!). They switched me around about 5 time to different departments and finally handed me over to the FC Crossgrade folks (1-888-840-8433) who basically told me "no". They suggested I call the UK Apple FC Crossgrade folks and see exactly how I'd upgrade this from them while living in the USA.
Thanks for your reply and help.

  • Upgrading a Mac Pro 1,1 for FCP X

I'm starting with a Mac Pro 2.66GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 4GB RAM (4x 1GB Modules) and Geforce 7300 GT. I run FCP 6 on DV footage. My goal is to run FCP X working with AVCHD from consumer level cameras, DSLR video from cameras such as the 5DMkII, and the Canon XF300. The Scratch Disks are 7200 RPM HDD's either in the Mac Pro's additional drive bays or connected via eSATA. What I'm thinking is to replace the stock video card with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and increasing the RAM to 12GB by adding 4x 2GB Modules. My level of complexity for edited projects is basic transitions, lower 3rds, and ocassional use of three way color correction. With the upgrades I have listed here, do you think I have sufficient hardware to get started with FCP X? Anything else I should be aware of either hardware or software related?

AVCHD is fairly processor intensive, being so compressed. So, I'd suggest downloading the free trial of FCP X to get an idea of how well your current CPU will handle some of this footage. You can transcode it to ProRes. Just keep in mind your files will get a lot bigger.
You might want to check on the current status of XF300 support. I think you might have to re-wrap those files into *.mov files. I do when I use Sony's XDCAM EX format. Not an issue, just make sure you understand what it takes to work with Canon's format. (or Sony's)
Check to make sure the 5770 will work in your Mac Pro. I have one in my Mac Pro 3,1 and it's fine. But I had heard there might be some capatibily issues with older Mac Pros.
You might want to consider more than 12 GB of RAM. On my system, FCP X seems to hover around 7 GB of real memory.
It can be a touch decision to upgrade an old Mac Pro, or simply getting a new system. I wouldn't suggest getting a new Mac Pro now. Intel's new processors should be out in 1Q12 and they will be significant upgrade to the current offering.
The new iMacs (specifically the fastest ones, with the most GPU RAM) are very good FCP X editing machines. They can keep up with the fastest Mac Pros, for less money. But, you do loose internal expansion and would have to move to Thunderbolt. Probably at least three times the perfomance of what you have now.

  • Can't login after upgrading to leapord

My accounts show up but when I click on one to enter my password I get the beach ball I've let it run for 20 minutes but the beach ball stays... Am I screwed?

I wanted to post as well so Apple can be assured there is a problem. I am also having the same password issues, after upgrading... only one "backup" non-admin account is accessible. I am positive I am typing everything correctly. Also, when I "log out" of this user, I get the blue screen and the "forever" beach ball as well.
Thanks goodness a friend of mine mentioned he was going to test the new system on his laptop first before installing on his main work computer. I decided to do the same. Good thing I did. I can only imagine the problems that are going to erupt after many people receive their upgrades today.
I am going to try the suggestions listed here - *thank you to those that posted* - even though some of the answers are making my head spin . I am beyond aggravated and disappointed that I am having such an issue and I haven't even gotten into using the new system. This is not the Apple I know and love.

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade from Final Cut Pro or Production Suite, during the installation process, when i have to insert the original serial number of my older Fina Cut studio, installer show me an error message telling that my serial number is invalid!
What can i do? Both products are original!
    Thanks

Call Apple if you're really sure that you are entering the numbers correctly. ones can look like L's and zero's look like Ohs... etc..

  • Upgrade to FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9 stops DV

    Hi all,
Have upgraded to from OSX 10.3.9 to OSX 10.4 to allow me to upgrade FCP from 4.5 to 5.1 in order to add HDV support.
First use after upgrading and FCP is no longer recognising DV camera through Firewire. Subsequently upgraded to OSX 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.4 but still have the same problem.
Can control the camera from log and capture, but preview disabled and capturing insists that no device is selected. Capture presets state that Video Device DV Video is missing
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the problem?
    TIA

  • Is there upgrade pricing for FCP?

I have an older version of Final Cut Pro.  In the past I would be able to purchase version upgrades.
Now that the sale of FCP has moved to the App Store, is there any way to buy an upgrade rather than the full version?
    Thanks.

  • FCS 2 Upgrade from FCP 2?

I have a question about the upgrade to FCS 2. In the Apple store it says you can upgrade from an old version including FCP 2. I have a legit FCP 2 install disc so I assume this would work, but I'm not exactly sure how. FCP 2 is an OS 9 only app and the machine I want to upgrade does not have it on there--we are not running FCP 2 anywhere. Does the old version have to be installed for the upgrade? In the past updgrades for FCP / FCS have required the "original install disc" to be inserted. Is there anyone at the store.apple.com that I can contact about this? I thought there was a chat, but I can't find it now. (I'm in Micronesia and the closest Apple store is at least 1000 miles away.) Any suggestions appreciated.

The old version does not have to be installed. You merely have to enter the serial number for the older version when prompted.

  • How to get printed manuals with upgrade to FCP from Motion?

I upgraded my standalone version of Motion to FCP 5.1 Universal through the mail and wondering how I can get the printed manuals. I realize it's not practical for Apple to mail 40 pounds of books and that the same text is probably on one of the DVDs but reading a physical book makes learning easier than reading on screen.
Has anyone been able to upgrade from Motion to FCP and get the printed books?
    Thanks,

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    David,
Apple provides manuals with most of it's software. I KNOW THIS OCCURS FOR A FACT! Thanks for posting your doubts and other notes but I don't think they are really being crafted towards helping at this point.
I was actually hoping others might have found solutions rather than looking for salt to rub into the wound. But to help you and the others you have spoken with to understand possible solutions I'm hoping might remedy the problem here are a few that suggestions:
    - Call Apple Customer Support and get them to exchange the misrepresented product through the mail for what was represented.
    - Walking into the Apple store and confronting the sales people with the issue and getting them to exchange the product.
    - Working through Consumer Affairs and getting them to eiother refund or exchange the product.
    - Calling a local TV station to report the fact that Apple shows one product on their web site and in their stores while selling something different with a the same name that is incomplete.
    - Working through the Better Business Bureau to file a complaint against Apple for the misrepresentation and getting them to replace the product for the abused customers.
    - Emailing the support folks at Apple and getting a emailed voucher in return which will allow users to exchange the product int stores.
I can think of dozens of ways Apple or other organizations could help resolve the situation.
Printing a color manual at Kinko's seems like a ridiculous expense to me. I cannot afford it and I appreciate you not consistently saying it's a viable solution. I'm actually a bit surprised that you keep responding with no help, confusing unrelated comments, and insist on further irritating the situation.
I hope my multiple attempts to help you understand what my issue is and possible solutions that people might offer has helped clarified things for you. If you have any further comments though please reserve them so others who may have had actual experiences similar to mine with possible solutions might be able to read this thread without having to see me explaining things over and over.
    Thanks,
    DAN
