Upgrading to MacBook Pro, w/ Avid, today. Help ASAP!?

Oh goodness. I'm lost in a sea of information, not finding real answers, and running out of time. I know the answer to this is probably somewhere on the forum, but I've tried searching here, and elsewhere, and haven't found the answer yet.
Here's the facts:
-Currently using a PowerBook G4 w/ 10.4.8, and it's about to go kaputz (screen "lines" problem, and busted sound card)
-Going in to the Apple Store later today (Wednesday) to get a new MacBook Pro
(since the part required to fix my laptop is no longer made, they're giving me a trade-in deal)
-I'm a professional editor who must, no questions asked, run Avid XPress Pro (5.7.0).
The problem is that Avid only plays nice with 10.4.8 and doesn't even start up with anything higher. When I purchase my new MacBook Pro tomorrow/today, I'm sure that it will come with the latest upgrade. It will also have an iSight (etc) which will require that newer software. Can I have them downgrade the OS to 10.4.8, and still have it come with iSight support, "Spaces" etc...?
Also, is using "Spaces" (which I just heard about 20 minutes ago) an option for running Leopard, and Tiger at the same time, so I can have all the functions of Tiger, but still be able to run Avid on Leopard? Will Avid play nicely this way?
I'm SO sorry for the urgency, but i just got approval a few hours ago, and I'm leaving for the Apple Store in the morning, and due to an important work deadline, need this up and running ASAP.
Thanks all! I'll keep searching for my own answers, too!

I'm afraid that current MBP's WON'T boot from Tiger at all Ethos Prod.
You will simply get kernel Panics at startup.
The previous SantaRosa models could be booted with Tiger 10.4.11, but not with earlier versions, from memory.
Your best bet is a second hand model from late 2006, if booting with 10.4.8 is essential, I'm afraid.
(see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159?viewlocale=en_US for a listing of the OS's that came with particular MBPs)
You MAY be able to run a windows version of Avid using Bootcamp, on a new MPB, but I gather that there can be some problems with this , too. http://community.avid.com/forums/t/50246.aspx?PageIndex=12 may be worth a look.
Some people also suggest that version Avid 5.8 will more or less work under Leopard 10.5.2 or later, but not 5.7.

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to 10.6.8 today and now it hard crashes the Operating System when I connect my iHome USB keyboard.  I get a window that states I must press the power button until the computer shuts down and then restart.  On reboot sends Panic Report to Apple with lots of USB error type stuff in it.  WORKED FINE UNTIL I UPGRADED TO 10.6.8 TODAY.

  • How would you upgrade my MacBook Pro 15" to maximize performance?  No dollar limit.

I love my MCB, but am not technical.
Spend my money, theoretically -- If you had an unlimited budget to upgrade this system to make it fast and more efficient, what would you buy or do to it?
I'm deciding if I should scrap it and get a new MacBook Pro 13" instead.  I like my MCB 15", but it seems to be getting hung up alot with the spinning rainbow, everyday apps freezing or crashing, and just slow when I have multiple windows open in Safari and Firefox at same time.  I realize that the sites I browse to are more graphic intensive than they were when I got the MCB in 2008, but I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to spend some $$$ to upgrade whatever I can and save my pennies for a newer Mac in a year or two.  Safari and Mail crash or get hung a lot, Photo Booth folder is mysteriously empty,
So should I expect to be able to get substantial performance improvement (speed, multi-tasking) if I upgrade whatever is upgradable?
I surf using multiple browsers and open many tabs and mail with numerous accounts and magicjack, ocassionally use iweb, pages, text, calendar, low intensity games.
Thanks for any advice and recommendations and thoughts.  I'd probably get the Genius Bar to install upgrades.

Also -- it had a couple of soft drops to floor and one medium intensity drop, always on carpet.  so the case (not unibody) is dented on the sides with ports.  All "seem" to work fine except right side USB; looks pushed in and angled, and the plastic trim that fills in space connecting flat top of typing surface to bottom cover has a 4" piece cracked off (kind of looks like where grout would go).  Devices work but if you move the wire it's power filckers off and on.  Have never used firewire or thunderbolt ports on this.
I would like more USB port options (maybe a high grade extendor???) for Logitech laptop cooler, external HD, VOIP device, wired mouse, wired keyboard (I prefer wired).
    Thanks again.

    Hello Neville,
Thanks for looking in to this and alerting me.  I don't know how to interpret all the data in the descriptions of the USBs in your post (or mine, for that matter) Which descriptive line/codes show a USB 1.0 and a USB 2.0.  I would like to understand how to read that.
    Here's how I determined both are 2.0.
    1.  I checked my serial number at this Apple link and confirmed it is MacBook Pro 15" Early Version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4132
    2.  Then I looked up the technical specifications at this Apple support link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP4
    3. .Then I double-checked and looked up tech specs at this EveryMac link:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .4-15-santa-rosa-specs.html
Both links say two USB 2.0 ports.  I just took it for granted that they are both correct.
    Much appreciation for your help.

    Hi from Belgium,
Is it possible to upgrade a macbook pro 15 late 2008 memory from 4 to 8 go. And if yes would i have to replace both memory modules.
I'm also experiencing problems with the battery. Could you tell me if the new replacement batteries are based on the new techonology (long lasting) or if the replacement battery will be the same as the original one.
Thanks and have a good day.

    Hi CMCSK and thanks.
Maybe it's because of the SMC reset I've done.
My computer wasn't responding to the power button when pressed and used to shut down unexpectedly so I did the SMC reset as per the procedure hereafter.

So according to you, the battery seems to work properly and doesn't need to be replaced.
Don't know if it's important but the figures I gave where the one with magsafe connected.
In fact for the time beeing I only use my computer with magsafe plugged.
I just unplugged the magpower and here are the new figures after 10 minutes.
    Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          3103
      Fully Charged:          No
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          3491
      Health Information:

      Battery Installed:          Yes

Are these figures still ok ? Thanks for your help and have a good day.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro with Lion (but with iphoto 9.2.1) to Maverick and now I can't open iphoto and I can't update either - can anyone help please?

Download the iPhoto upgrade from the App Store. It should be free.
iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠ for any new device running iOS 7, and are also available as free updates for existing users. GarageBand for Mac and iOS are free for all OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 users. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available for a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 for each platform.

I just upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion. Now I want to install windows, but during installation using bootcamp, it says windows can't install on FAT partition. I couldn't change it to NTFS. Also how can I partition my hard disk after windows installation. Coz before windows installation, if I partition hard disk, it won't allow me to install windows saying startup disk can't be partitioned.......help would be appreciated.

Now, I wish to upgrade from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 to latest version of OS X Yosemite, but I am in doubt and worry if after upgraded to Yosemite, can I still using my Windows XP where I installed now in Mountain Lion 10.8.5 BootCamp?
Yosemite does not allow a new installation of XP, but an existing XP installation is self-contained and will continue to work. Does your XP installation use a FAT partition? You may be better off using NTFS and then upgrading to Yosemite.
Will the Yosemite upgrade process delete my Windows XP partition or crash my current BootCamp? Can I still have an option to load OS X or Windows XP (press 'alt/option' key during boot up) after upgraded to Yosemite?
If you have made any re-sizing attempts to WXP partition Yosemite will cause problems, otherwise the Yosemite upgrade leaves XP untouched.
Are there any specific reasons to upgrade to Yosemite?

The drive is supposed to be able to have write speeds of 500mb/s and read speeds of up to 550 mb/s but when i run a speed test on the disk im only getting a max write speed of around 105 mb/s, and read speed of 137mb/s ish, now the negotiated speed is only 1.5gb/s I have trim enabled, and i have tried changing the link speed but with no luck. The drive is rated for 6gb/s also. The drive is not in the hard drive bay because my hard drive cable is broken, i have it in the optical bay right now, could someone please help me or tell me how to make the drive at least go up to sata 3 speeds,

The 2009 MBPs were built with a very cheaply made HDD to LB cable. So I bet if you change that cable you will see more speed from that SSD.
