Upgrading to mountain lion and problems with time machine
I recently upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. Now Time Machine does these huge hourly backups even when nothing has been updated. When I have VMware running, the update aborts, eventhough nothing in the virtual machine is supposed to be backed up. I am wondering if TM is trying to back up some work files that were created during the conversion. Has anybody seen this before? Any ideas?
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Just upgrade. That replaces Snow Leopard with Mountain Lion, without disturbing anything else.
But by all means, always keep up-to-date backups, in case something goes wrong. -
HT1338 I have mountain lion and cant get time machine to work. the disk keeps getting ejected.
I just installed Mountain lion and i can't get time machine to work. every time i connect it time machine starts but then ejects the drive. I also tried to back up direct to the hard drive with the software that came with the drive and the same thing happens. Does anyone have a clue as to what may be wrong?
When that happens, you should get some sort of message. If you don't remember it exactly, go to the Time Machine Preferences window -- there should be a red "Failed" message and icon there. Click the icon to see the message. Either report the wording or post a screenshot.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs. Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs. Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here. -
Mountain Lion and problems with viewing Birthdays and events that are synced.
Since downloading Mountain Lion, Birthdays do not show up on my iCal even though I have checked off Show Birthdays. Also new events added to my iPhone and iPad do not show up iniCal on my MacBook Pro when I sync the devices to my laptop. Help!
In cases like this, if you have an Apple store near by, they will most likely install the OS free of charge for you, if you can't bring your Apple ID along to prove you've paid for it.

Mountain lion sleep problems with time capsule

My MBP hangs and won't wake from sleep. After I reset, I found out that the Time Machine is doing backups even while the MBP is sleeping.

selling macbook Pro 2011. It came with Lion, I upgraded to mountain Lion and Mavericks. Can license be transfer to new owner? how?
Good question now that Mavericks is free to all.
It used to be - and is probably still the case - that to comply with the license you should erase and re-install the OS that came pre-installed on the Mac when new. If there were restore disks they needed to be passed on with the Mac.
I'm happy to be corrected on this by someone who's more au fait with the legalese, but an upgraded OS is tied to an AppleID whereas the original OS is tied to the computer, not an AppleID.
My guess is, that if you launched the Recovery HD, erased the drive using Disk Utility and re-installed the OS, Lion would be installed.
Be interesting to see what others say. -
I have 2nd generation apple tv, and this has always worked well with Lion, have now upgraded to Mountain Lion, and now can not connect to itunes, all other things work, can buy or rent films, but can not listen to my music or show photos. Can anybody help please?

Upgraded to Mountain Lion and Can't Get Calendar to sync with Exchange server
Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my Calendar refuses to sync with the Exchange server. Events deleted on the web interface dont show up on my Air Calendar. Any thoughts on this?

Why, when MobileMe was shuttered, does Apple NOT support calendar subscriptions for iCal (Calendar)?
I upgraded to Mountain Lion and cannot migrate my Dutch, U.K., Islamic, or Catholic holiday subscriptions. I had a heck of a time getting my Detroit Tigers Baseball team schedules migrated (but Major League Baseball supported the subscriptions, so it occurred). As I work internationally, having these calendar subscriptions on the new Calendar would be very useful.
If one goes to the Apple site, and seeks calendars [http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/calendars/index1.html], they are shunted to MobileMe [https://www.icloud.com/mobileme/not_found/], with the note "MobileMe is closed. Go to iCloud." But, I do not see how to get subscriptions from iCloud.
Thanks.The problem is that many of these calendars were hosted on MobileMe. I actually tried about 20 at random, and only two worked! Not all of the failures were ex-MobileMe, some were on other servers but produced 'File Not Found'.
Strangely, this one worked despite its URL:

Until the people who publish these calendars (it's not Apple, they are third-party) wake up and find alternative servers these calendars are not available.
There may be other sources which work - try Googling. -
I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now I can't use any of my software!
What a disaster and huge mistake. Upgraded to Mountain Lion and now I can't run Autocad 2012 for Mac, any of my Adobe Creative suites software such as Photoshop, Illustrator.. and now I can't even do upgrades because Mountain Lion doesn't allow me to launch DMGs. I've lost thousands of $'s in software, not to mention time, but most importantly now I can't even work! I just tried to revert back to Snow Leopard by intalling it back in my hard drive and it won't let me. I never used Time Machine. Is there any way on earth I can revert back to my old operating software??? Please help. And if you haven't upgraded yet and are thinking about it. BEWARE - and don't do it. I've been reading that Mountain Lion isn't working with Microsoft applications either. Omy...I haven't even checked that.

No you are not, calm down, cbs20 already gave you the answer on opening dmg files, updates are available for most of your programs and I assume you have licenses for the Adobe products. AutoCad you'll have to wait for.
And please .... Start Backing Things Up, you could lose it all without one, work included. -
I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail are not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice. Yesterday, the signatures were stacking instead of switching to the one I wanted to choose.
I had this and fixed it.
I had upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures in Mail were fine. But then about a week later, I got a new computer and used Migration Assistant to copy my stuff to the new machine. Upon opening Mail, I had all the correct Signature information in the Preferences>Signatures window, but nothing worked.
After lots of hunting, I found the Signature Folder. It's in:
Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
Looking at my previous setup (which works) I saw in that folder two types of files: .webarchive and .siganture
Looking in my new machine's Signature folder, I saw only the .webarchive folders, not the .signature folders
Since this was literally a clone of my previous setup to a new machine, here's what I did:
1. Quit Mail
2. In Problem machine, go to
Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
3. Move the Signatures folder someplace safe, but out of the MailData folder
4. Get the Signatures Folder from the working install (like a backup) and copy it to the MailData folder on the problematic machine
5. Start Mail on the problem machine
This worked for me. I don't know why Migration Assistant didn't copy the full signature folder, but this fixed it. It worked perfectly partly because I had just backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner and the very next day set up the new machine. I don't know where Lion or earlier versions of mail stored signatures, but the absence of the .signature filetype seems to be the problem.

I used to be able to "Save" my material in PAGES. I upgraded to "Mountain Lion" and now when I go to "Save", it says "permission denied". How can I correct this?
<E-mail Edited by Host>Several users have had this problem in Mountain Lion. The system has decided you don't have read/write permissions. Have you done any updates to your system lately? Using Disk Utility to repair permissions after any upgrade or update, especially to the system, is a good practice. So first, I would repair permissions & then if you still have the problem, locate the file in Finder & go to File > Get Info & look in the Sharing & Permissions section. You should be the only one with read/write permissions but something has happened. Click on the words under "priveledge" next to your name & change it to read & write. You will probably have to enter your admin password.

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. -

go to the SPOTLIGHT search and type in Stickies.
The app is still on your mac, it just doesn't show in the dock or the Launchpad.
It opened and all my lovely notes appeared as they were in my Lion install.
