USB drive locks up ibook running 10.3.9

Hi All,
I didn't know if this question was more appropriate for this forum or the ibook forum, as I do not know if this is a SW or HW problem at this point. I decided to post here.
I have a G4 1.2Ghz 12" ibook running 10.3.9, and I recently purchased a Rocport 4U usb HD from a vendor called Rocstor. After I formatted the drive, I don't have any problems copying (drag n drop) files to the HD... but when I attempt to either open a file on the usb drive or copy back to the ibook HD, I get the spinning beach ball. The only way to get out of this freeze is to unplug the drive. It does not matter how I format the drive (Mac OS Extended or Fat32) -- the same thing happens. Also note the following: The drive works just fine on a Windows XP laptop when formatted as Fat32, and works just fine plugged into a Mac Mini PPC running 10.4.8 formatted as Mac OS Extended.
So, by process of elimination, the problem is either the version of OS (10.3.9), or the hardware (PPC ibook). I'm really hoping it is just the OS, because I will be upgrading once Leopard comes out. I don't see how it could be the hardware. I can copy tons of files to the drive no problem, and all of these files can be opened or copied on the Mac Mini. The drive comes with a usb connector that can plug into two usb ports for use on laptops with low power ports, and I'm utilizing this cable.
Any ideas? If I failed to disclose any piece of info that may be useful, please let me know and I'll do my best to provide it.
As an aside: I have not talked to the vendor Rocstor yet. I wanted to post to the Apple discussion boards first.
Regards and Thanks,
Grant

Was the machine put sleep or the lid closed while it was on before this started happening? The USB bus goes into low powered mode which confuses many third party devices. Try to see if the problem reproduces itself right after a restart but before you close the lid or let the machine fall asleep, and turn off Energy Saver's sleep functions by setting them all to Never.

I don't know what to do? I just want to run windows from an external usb drive like i can run mac osx.
    please help.  thanks

  • Trying to hook up a third external USB drive

I have been trying with no luck to connect a third external usb drive to my ibook so I can keep music, photo and movie content on separate drives only to find that the 3rd usb drive will not stay connected. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong. My ibook is a g4 running 1.5 gb of ram @ 1.33.

First thing to do is connect this 3rd device directly to a port on the computer. If that works OK, then what you need to do is get a powered USB hub to replace the non-powered one you're using.
Do all the drives have their own power supplies?

  • HP TouchPad does not appear as USB drive on mac os x lion

    Hi.
Before the last update I was on 3.0.4 version of the webOS and my HP TouchPad would appear as a USB drive on my mac (running OSX Lion).  But since the 3.0.5 update when I plug in the TouchPad and select to mount it as a USB drive it complains that it is not recognised and gives me the option to "Initialise ..."
    What is going on?

It seems to me that 10.7.3 update, or something that was updated in the past two months is causing this issue.  It's an osx issue, as I know for certain my unit will mount on an older version of the os, but not on my recently updated Lion.
It used to work on Lion, but no more.  Preware will load however - but the device will not mount.

  • USB drives not accessible until I join a domain

    Hi,
I´ve been struggling with this problem for a loong time now.
Simply put, I want to use a usb drive in a laptop running Windows 7, and the device is detected correctly but Windows says that I need to format it. And in My Computer the drive has got a letter but when I doubleclick it it says it´s unaccessible. But if
I join the laptop to my customers AD it suddenly works as it should.
Since I discovered that, I just ignored it since all computers would join the domain, but now I need to install several laptops that´s not going to be ad-joined. So I need help solving this usb problem.
The customers uses laptops(Dall Latitude Exxx models) only and we install these using WDS. I think that all models of laptops have this issue and all usb drives. I haven´t been able to narrow it down to a certain model or anything else.
Everything else works as they should. The usb ports works fine using mouse and keyboard and similar. It´s only usb drives that are the problem.
I know that the hardware isn´t faulty since I can boot up using Linux and everything is fine, plus when I join the domain everything is also fine.
I have tried reinstalling chipset/usb drivers but nothing has helped. Also sfc /scannow doesn´t help.
Using gpedit.msc I set everything in "Users/Administrative/System/Access to removable storage" to inactive but this makes no difference.
I have not had this problem outside this customer.
Does anyone have any ideas? If so, please help!
    Regards,
    //Andreas..

    Hi,
we should figure out what’s the difference between the two situations.  I have the following thoughts to narrow down this cause:
Do you have preinstalled any security applications in your image?
Does this issue occur to all USB devices?
After  you join the domain, can you log on with a local account to access USB devices?
You can get the security policies via rsop.msc as well.

  • I just purchased an ipod shuffle (4th gen.) and  I have been working trying to get it running for hours.  I have followed all manuals and tutorial help.  When I pull up my device manager, it shows an Ipod, but won't let me download the Usb driver.

  • Help I itunes will not recognize my iphone or ipod. Trouble with USB driver, device not running in safe mode, and HDCP not supported.

Help! When I connect my iphone or ipod touch to my computer, windows recognizes my device but itunes will not. I can still see my songs, videos, and access the itunes store but my phone and itunes store have no connection so it does me no good. I have for 2 days now tried every trouble shooting method posted with no luck. I think I may have finally found a lead. My Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is showing up under portable mobile devices while it is supposed to be showing up under universal serial Bus controllers from my understanding? Also, while running my diagnostic report under itunes it also says itunes is not running in safe mode, it is not showing enabled in windows firewall (which it is checked), and the HDCP is not supported. I don't know what to do? I am in tears here, someone please help!!!

  • I am trying to reinstall Windows on my macbook pro.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."

I am trying to reinstall Windows (would not launch).  I removed the partition and started over.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."  I was successful before, what am I doing wrong this time?

    Try a restart.
If that doesn't fix the problem, shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • No application runs after booting from an external (USB) drive

    Hi all,
my best hope is that I just embarrass myself with a blatantly obvious question instead of finding a real issue that will be resolved only in later updates. Here it is:
As I want to upgrade my hard drive in my good ol' MacBook, I wanted to backup my present boot HDD to an external USB drive (freshly formatted, HFS+ journaled, GUID partition table). I tried both SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner. In both cases, the backup/cloning process goes fine, and I can reboot into the external drive, and the OS starts (yes, with wifi working, even iStat menus, textExpander etc. initiating fine). But all applications (not those on the menu bar, though) crash and notify me of some thread having tried some invalid operation, or sometimes I even got some vague reference to kernel protection.
Do you have any ideas what this is? Something new and (supposedly) secure in 10.5.6? I tried a fairly standard procedure, I think. (Also, it is a fairly pressing issue as I would not really want to waste much more time on this drive swap. And I would rather use disk-cloning than the install disk and sucking back data from an apparently unreliable backup.)
    Many thanks for any thoughts!
(Just to inform the interested, I ran a fairly extensive cleaning-maintenance-rebuild cycle by the latest Onyx before starting all this, this should clean up the state of the OS pretty much. But I could not run DiskWarrior. Convince me if you think that this would solve the problem.)

Thanks Devin, I think my issue is a bit different.
I am 'long' past the 10.5.6 update (as long as possible), it did not crash, and Software Update checked what it wanted several times since then (as it is set to do so daily).
Thanks for the safe boot tip, I have not tried it yet, though I am skeptical why would this help applications starting up without breaking some kernel protection -- but only if I booted up from an external drive.
I repaired all I could before the cloning of the drive, only the deep maintenance of DiskWarrior was skipped. With the disk or the OS itself, I basically did what you can, even the stuff that you are rarely supposed to do. (Onyx is a great tool to do all these and more, freely.)
I am not sure either that a FireWire drive would have helped, but who knows. (But really, the OS would boot, just the applications would feel that their are on an 'inferior' drive?) In any case, FireWire drives are not that easy to come by, and a risky investment -- e.g. I could not use them with the new MacBooks. Oh, and all my work was done on a firm table, but again, the behavior would be hard to explain as the HDD misbehaving, as the OS had no glitch, just I could not start applications without their crashing immediately.
Thanks again, I hope I run into something useful or if it is a bug then Apple magically pushes out some update before their winter break, or I will sadly watch my precious new drive sitting on a table idly.

    Tell my wife that!
This is the best I can do. This way you can use the 2011 MBA way to do things.
Look for the post from @jacktourist. (on page 2 about half way down) This seems to be the easiest.
There are a couple of more similar to this with pictures I've seen around but can't remember where.
Here's another search with added info. It's easier then it sounds.

A SMC reset can often get ports working if they've stopped.  If you have an iMac or Mac Pro, just unplug the power cord and wait 10-15 seconds.  If you have a notebook Mac, then it a bit trickier...here is an article from apple

  • CD partition of 320GB External USB Drive - PX1267U-3G32 does not run

I have an 320GB external usb drive, which has been working perfectly.
There is a security partition that appears as a CD drive in My Computer and runs the password programme automatically when the drive is plugged in.
Having entered the password the external hard drive appears as a drive in My Computer.
This security programme has stopped running.
I have turned the drive on/off.
Tried it on a different machine.
Tried to 'Autoplay' the CD drive.
Double Clicked the CD drive only to be told to "insert a disk into drive F:"
Is there a way to bypass this partition and recover all my data from the hard drive?

    Hello
Several times I saw how it works because a friend of mine has this external HDD. I do not have much experience with it but before you wait here for comments try to install REGEN software again. Maybe it will help. This software and CD Update Application you can find and download from Toshiba support page http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
Check it under Options > Drive Devices.

  • Auto run workflow, upon mounting of USB drive

    Hi,
I am trying to create a workflow, that copies all the files for my Dissertation to a folder on a USB drive.
I have got the basic workflow to work, using Get specified finder items>Get folder contents>Copy folder contents, which works fine however I would like this workflow to automatically run every time I insert my USB stick, so it always has the most up to date version of the files on it and I cant find out how to do this last bit!
    Any ideas?
    Regards
    Simon

you can use a launch daemon set to be triggered when you mount a disk.
Use [Lingon|http://lingon.sourceforge.net> for that. If the only disk you ever mount is your USB stick, it's quite straightforward. Just set the launch daemon to run your workflow on disk insertion.
If you also use other disks you'll simply get an error message when you mount something else and your thumb drive is not present. If you don't want to see the error message you can use an apple script. Something along the following lines:
    tell application "Finder"
    if exists disk "thumbdrivename" then
    tell application "path:to:your:workflow" to launch
    end if
    end tell
and set the daemon to run that instead of your workflow.
