USB drives unrecognized in LION

My Intel iMAC ( 5 month old) stopped recognizing USB thumbdrives or USB hard drives. It still recognizes a MAC OS extended USB hard disk used for Time machine  I tried to resetthe PRAM. I have no multiboot partitions.  My Linux box and older G5 do recognize the drives. Uninstalled Tuxera , NTFS driver, still the same issue. Quite disappointed. Any hints? I do not want to wipe out my OS disk and reinstall everything from scratch.

Thanks for the report, good work!
Pretty fast at fixing it you were also.

  • I want to create a USB drive for Mountain Lion and have no discs

I have a nice shiny new 27: iMac and was hoping to create a USB boot drive in case I need it. The iMac does not come with a disk drive and Mountain Lion is purchased via the App Store, so there are no disks with which to build the boot drive. I tried downloading Mountain Lion again from the App Store, but it tells me Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer. (yes, the computer that is running Mountain Lion right now)
iTunes Support is not very helpful. They keep telling me that I can't make a boot drive and are unable to help me download if from the App Store.
Surely Apple has created a way to build a boot drive in the case of emergency. There will be no way to defrag my hard drive if I am unable to boot from the USB drive.

You have one on your iMac, the recovery partition. Your iMac is not compatible with the App Store version so don't try.
Install OSX on to a thumb drive if you want, it's a waste of time compared to using Recovery.

  • How to get OS X Lion on dvd or usb drive when operating Lion when just bought?

I am currently running Lion ever since I bought my macbook pro (early 2011).
After using it for a few months now I have realized that it is better to have a bootable dvd or usb drive of lion to have a it on other macs.
However, I have no idea where to get the OS X Lion .dmg file.
If anyone knows where to get the .dmg file please help me.
    Thank You!!!

Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

In the menu bar in left upper corner click on the apple logo
    click on About This Mac
Tell us what you see above the software update button? What version?
You can also click on the More Info to see what your OS X is

That is what I was guessing...I need to buy Snow Leopard as my operating system just says Mac OS Extended (journaled). I kept up with all the updates from my memory but don't know what number I am on. And need Snow Leopard or above to use any of the Canon software. The only problem with the 5D Mark III, it is not that user friendly for editing unless you have certain systems.

  • Making a bootable USB drive of Mountain Lion question

What if I have Mountain Lion already pre-installed on my retina MBP? I can't download it from the app store because it will charge me $20 for an OS I already have. Are there any guides on the net where I can DL Mountain Lion without the $20 charge?
Will Internet Recovery work like it does for Lion users?

Make sure your Apple ID is setup in the User & Groups System Preference.
When you sign into the App Store with your Apple ID, press the option key before clicking Purchases. Does Mountain Lion show up ready to Install?
If it does, download it again, but do not click Continue when it auto-runs and wants to update your rMBP. Now get Lion Diskmaker and a spare 8GB USB stick. Let Lion Diskmaker will ask you if Lion or Mountain Lion, then automagically build the bootable USB stick. Realize that the bootable USB stick will only provide full, clean installs.

    Hi,
I would check their USB Ports to see if they are working (try another port or another device in that same port)
You could check in System Profiler/Information in Lion.

    1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When its download finishes, close the installer and open Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable USB drive with Mountain Lion.
    2. Press Option key while your Mac is starting, select the external drive and open Disk Utility.
    3. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive.
    4. Close the window and install Mountain Lion

  • How can I use an external USB drive on my Macmini with Boot Camp and Lion/Windows 7?

I have a MacMini (Last model with a disk drive). The Mini has Lion and Windows 7 installed using Boot Camp. I want to attach a 350GB, USB, HP Personal Storage Device (Hard Drive) to the computer and be able to use it in both Lion and Windows 7 mode. The USB drive is formatted for Windows 7. I only want to use it for storage and back-up purposes for both operating systems. It would be nice if I could access the total disk from either system without having to reboot to change operating systems to view Windows 7 files and reboot again to view Lion files. Can anyone offer any guidance or any informational websites to help me? Thank you for any help!!

Yes, you’ll be able to do that.

  • How to install Windows 7 on 2010 MacBook Air with Lion - Bootcamp Assistant 4.0.1 from USB drive?

I want to install Windows 7 on my 2010 MacBook Air running Lion - Bootcamp Assistand 4.0.1 from a USB drive. I've done this in the past when I was running Snow Leopard and the process was rather easy but now Lion updated the Bootcamp Assistant so i'm no longer able to create a MBR partition without a Super Drive installed. Does anybody managed to do that? Thank you.

    Tell my wife that!
This is the best I can do. This way you can use the 2011 MBA way to do things.
Look for the post from @jacktourist. (on page 2 about half way down) This seems to be the easiest.
There are a couple of more similar to this with pictures I've seen around but can't remember where.
Here's another search with added info. It's easier then it sounds.

  • My USB drive isn't showing up in Mac OS X Lion on my MacBook Air

just got new macbook air with lion. When attach usb drive can't see it on desktop. Anyway to actually see it? Be easier to drag files into it if I could see it.

If you launch Disk Utility, does the external drive show up in the volumes list on the left-hand column of Disk Utility's window?
In Finder->Preferences, do you have "General->Show these items on the desktop: Hard disks" checked?

  • HP TouchPad does not appear as USB drive on mac os x lion

    Hi.
Before the last update I was on 3.0.4 version of the webOS and my HP TouchPad would appear as a USB drive on my mac (running OSX Lion).  But since the 3.0.5 update when I plug in the TouchPad and select to mount it as a USB drive it complains that it is not recognised and gives me the option to "Initialise ..."
    What is going on?

It seems to me that 10.7.3 update, or something that was updated in the past two months is causing this issue.  It's an osx issue, as I know for certain my unit will mount on an older version of the os, but not on my recently updated Lion.
It used to work on Lion, but no more.  Preware will load however - but the device will not mount.

  • Boot Camp For Lion -- USB ISO Method --"Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR"

Hello, has anyone had experience with dealing with this speciifc problem?
In short, upon rebooting, I am getting a black screen with a line of text that says, "Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR." Nothing happens after that.
I am using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. I have an ISO of Windows 7 Prof. along with an 8GB usb drive. I changed the coding in my bootcamp program to allow for the normally first invisible option that allows creation of a USB Installation program using an ISO that is normally only for computers without an optical drive.
I have that box checked, the check for new software box, and the install windows box checked. I went through the process of creating the USB, downloading the software, and partitioning the drive. Then on restart, I get the failed to load bootmgr error.
Some people have suggested using two usb drives for this. I am trying that method but it does not seem to help thus far.
    Can anyone offer any help?
    Thanks.

from what i understand you are trying to install win 8 pro from a "backup disk" the one that you purchased from microsoft.
this will not work, it is not an installer disk.
you need to start the process again. erase the partition you made on your hdd. in disc utility click the minus button after selecting the bootcamp partition, then manually drag the divider down fully then apply.
next, erase your usb then format it.
    download win 8 iso from here;
    http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/download-windows-8-pro/
it is perfectly legal to use your purchased product key in this install.
in bootcamp select the iso image you just downloaded, select your preferred partition size, check all 3 options.
you have the support software on another usb but you wont need it so it can be discarded. the install will work far better with the iso and support on the same drive.

I upgraded my computer to Lion recently and have been having major problems, Most importantly with managing my website on iweb.
my website is managed from a USB Drive, since the original creation was made on an ex-partners computer.
When I plugged the drive in today, the original set up of the website from 2009 comes up.

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

This is not difficult and you will not have to download from the app store.
your computer has what is called  a recovery partition that came with it.
simply hold cmd+R while you boot up. let go a second after you hear the chime.
you will boot into the recovery partition.
Use disk utlity to format your usb drive and then exit Disk utlity and go to Reinstall Mountain Lion.
it will ask  you which disk you want to install ML onto. Choose your new USB drive.
    easy peasy
