USB External Drive, Itunes, and MacBook Pro

So I'm buying a external USB drive so I can copy all my media to one source (External Drive). Once I have done so I'm guessing I need to leave the laptop and external drive on, for any sync. As I normally download podcasts via the laptop on a daily basis. Thus I can only power off the MAC and external drive only after all content has been sync'd to the Apple TV. Yes?

Correct.

    Why does iTunes SUCK??
    1) Many items greyed out in the menu bar, for well over 2 years, maybe more!
    2) I Can't drag more than one piece of content from your iTunes library to any device (iPhone, iPad)
If you do it gets stuck for HOURS and HOURS in "Preparing To Update" and the little activity circle never completes, ever!!
I used to be able to drag over 1000 tunes, movies, etc. go have breakfast come back and it would all be on my device!!
Can't do it anymore, one song at a time, maybe an album at a time, or one movie, and that is it!!
If you do a 2nd item the other items stop loading and never continue!!
This is so BAD, I don't understand how they don't have this fixed yet!!
Please tell me I am not the only one!!
...and If I am tell me how to fix it!
    Very appreciated,

  • Opied files got corrupted in USB3 external drives connected to Macbook Pro, how to fix it?

I use USB3 connected external hard drives in my Macbook Pro mid 2012 (Yosemite 10.10.1) frequently. I had no problem until two months ago. This week I noticed a lot of corrupted files in one ext drive connected to USB3 port. Luckily  I have a backup, and I copied back the files. But the files copied recently were also corrupted even though source files are fine. I spent a whole day trying to fix it using different methods of copy and options, e.g. erasing the drive, using cp, rsync, ditto and a combination of their options. I figured out that if I use cp or cp - R for copying single file or folder, it works fine, but using of rsync, ditto or recursive cp or finder's drag and drop result into a lot of corrupted files in the target drive.  This is not the problem of external drive.  I was surprised to notice that all files are copied perfectly when I used a old macbook (2008 model, it only has USB2 port, and OSX Mavericks). Since I have almost 2TB data to write, USB2 is very slow. I want to use USB3 of Macbook Pro 2012, but I am very disappointed to find out that USB3 in Yosemite is causing the trouble, writing out corrupted files. If anyone has a solution to this problem, or a second thought, Please suggest.

Disk is formatted to Paragon NTFS

My guess here is there is some issue with the use of Paragon NTFS. Perhaps updating it or using another NTFS driver (like Tuxera, or its free alternative NTFS-3G) will work. All in all, using NTFS in write mode with these options will be using a non-supported approach for accessing your drive, which could lead to odd problems if Apple makes a change that interferes with the functions of these drivers. At other times, such drivers use inherently less stable approaches (such as the FUSE environment) that could lead to problems if not formatted correctly.
If your drive is working, and the formatting is checked out properly in Windows and other systems, then I'd suggest you check on your NTFS driver and update or replace it. Alternatively, if you only use the drive with your Mac, then consider formatting it to Apple's native Mac OS Extended. Lastly, if you use the drive with multiple operating systems, then consider using FAT32 or ExFAT as the format, as these are fully supported in OS X (unlike NTFS, which is only supported for reading).

Disk is formatted to Paragon NTFS

It's good to hear the Macbook Pro & the disk is capable of working correctly. The next test would be to try a clean install of OS X & repeat the copy guess. Adding third party drivers for write support makes the picture a little cloudy IMO.
I'm not really sure what else to suggest other than doing some tests & then taking that data to an Apple store. If you are lucky the genius may follow up on it, or if you submit it as bug reports Apple may follow up on it.

  • External Drive crash on Macbook Pro

I don't know which category I should put this on. I wish somebody can help me.
My friend has an external hard drive - 500 GB, FAT 32. He actually uses a PC. He connected his hard drive to a Macbook Pro (Leopard). After get it back, he found nothing in his hard drive but .trash and .spotlight-V100 as hidden files. However, it still says that he has 450 GB on the hard drive.
What he is doing now is blaming all problem to be Mac's fault.
Do you guys have any idea what is the cause of the problem and hopefully how to bring those data back?
    Thank you a lot!!!

I doubt that anything would have happened on the mac without his specific permission. Unless your friend opened up Disk Utility and altered a whole bunch of settings?
Try connecting the drive to the Mac and right click on the drive and "Get Info" and see how much free space there is. Then, connect it to your PC and check to see how much free space there is. That way, you'll know whether the data has been physically removed from the drive OR if it's just hidden for the time being (for whatever reason).
EDIT: Updated to reflect that I too have Leopard

  • USB not powering external drive on new macbook pro

My new macbook pro retina display is not powering an external 750GB GDrive moblie. Is anyone having this problem?

It seems as if a number of people are having problems with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 MBP's - particularly when it comes to external storage devices.
As you  don't have a FW800 port (or, yet, an adapter) the best thing you can do is either return it to your local Apple Store and see if they know of a 'fix' (which I doubt - someone would have posted that by now), whether it's only occurring with some MBP models, and you can always file a bug report with Apple: https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn - you must sign in with your Apple ID.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there have been quite a few people posting here with the same problem.

  • Syncronizing PC iTunes and MacBook Pro iTunes

    Hey everyone,
I have a PC desktop that where I do all of my iTunes business on. I just bought a MacBook Pro that I would like to sync my PC playlists to. Currently, the only way I know to sync libraries and playlists is to copy my iTunes folder from my PC (all 80GB of it) to my Mac via USB drive and edit the iTunes Music Library.xml. It's not too hard, but it takes a really long time to transfer, especially if I've only added a couple songs or I've just moved songs to different playlists. It would also be nice to sync back to my PC so I don't have to wait to get home before purchasing or editing stuff on iTunes.
Does anyone know an easier way to synchronize iTunes playlists on different computers so it's not so tedious?

    Correct.

  • Songs skipping like scratched cd on iTunes and MacBook pro

Posted this on iTunes and no response. I would really appreciate a reply from Apple as I not only paid loads for my MacBook, but crowed like mad how much better the Mac would be than a PC for doing music live. I am seriously disappointed and a bit embarrassed.
Hi, I use my MacBook pro to play backing tracks for my live show. I am working in Greece in the outdoors at night. Since the beginning of the summer iTunes has been skipping like mad during gigs Not Good. I don't remember when I upgraded my iTunes but don't recall having the problem last year when I started using the MacBook. I have searched the net and have found many a kindred soul suffering skipping songs.
    What gives?
    What I have tried:
1- I have disabled the sudden movenmt sensor thinking it might be a Bass Response issue. However, still does it.
2- bought a DJ rack to elevate the computer thinking it might be a heat issue. Nope.
3- got rid of all start up items, closed airport, netshred, etc.
4- changed the setting on Perian from Dolby stereo to stereo, and then I uninstalled it. Nope
5- I use the apogee duet live and I get skips. Tried it without the duet and it's worse.
    What I am running-
    MacBook Pro
    Lion X 10.7.4
Processor- 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory- 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    1TB SATA HD
I hope someone can help. I spent a lot of money for my MacBook and don't want to go back to the PC.
    Thanks
    [email protected]
P.S. I have upgraded, as well, to the latest iTunes.

    Hi, Clinton,
Now I think that I have officially tried everything short of taking out the HD and replacing it..
I have used the removable drive and still got the problem.. However, I noticed that the skipping only happens on my Backing Tracks and the same ones, which then told me that the tracks became corrupted. So I re-encoded 2 of the tracks using Garageband and Others I just replaced with new versions..
It worked great for 2 gigs and I was chuffed to bits.. However, I needed the third gig to make it a go and then BLAMMO one of the re-encoded songs skips... My 4th gig I get a new addition to the skipping...
Something is wrong and it is doing my head in.. Do you have any other suggestions aside from going back to my Cheapie Windows Notebook that never skipped?

  • How do I install base system on external drive to boot MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 core 2 duo. I use an external HD for storage. Want to make external drive bootable (i.e. to run apps like DiskWarrior on MacBookPro).
How do I install the base system?
    Thank you.

First, be sure the external drive is partitioned using the GUID partition scheme. If it isn't then you will have to re-partition the drive which will erase anything you have on the drive.
Second, the external drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
Last, boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer and install OS X onto the external drive. Do not do an Erase and Install if you don't want to erase the external drive. You can customize the installation to omit any additional components you don't need such as language localizations, Asian Fonts, unneeded printer drivers, etc.

  • External Drive installed IN MacBook pro?

There are some great prices on Seagate 2TB 3.5" Expansion External Drives.  Can anyone tell me if you could pull the drive out and install INSIDE a MacBook Pro? (Is it a 2.5" SATA drive?)  I'm out of space and can't update any more!!
I have swapped internal drive into external cases, but don't want to pull an external apart if I won't be able to install internally.
    Thanks!
    Tom

Yes, it's correct that all MBPs use 2.5" SATA hard drives. All unibody MBPs can use drives up to 12.5mm high, even though Apple specifies 9.5mm drives.
The bare drive units inside some factory-assembled external drives are 15mm high and won't fit inside a MBP, but you generally can't find out what drive unit is inside such a product, or anything about its height, without taking it apart and voiding its manufacturer's warranty. And external drives cost more than bare drives.

  • USB External Drive Access and Spinning Beachball Crash

Over the last month that I have had my MacBook, the machine has experienced five spinning beachball crashes forcing me to manually power it down. First, the application I'm using freezes with the spinning beachball. Then, progressively other apps on the machine also lock up, where cmd-opt-esc and Dock-based force quitting do not respond. Eventually, the whole machine locks up, forcing me to hold down the power button to reboot.
I have been trying to figure out the pattern. It has happened once in OpenOffice.org, three times in TeXShop and once in Safari. I think the pattern across the five episodes is that the machine was trying to access my external USB hard drive to save a file (saving an already-open document in OpenOffice.org and TeXShop and printing a web page to a PDF document in Safari).
The drive is a Lacie 60GB USB drive, formatted AppleHFS, MacOS extended (journaled). Verification with the Disk Utility checks out fine, and I have in fact recently reformatted it to make sure.
I think the crashing problem is also related to this Console message, which recurs periodically:
    Jul 3 10:26:21 MK-MBCD kernel[0]: jnl: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5
I use the drive with my iMac G5 as well, where I have experienced no similar problems.
I would appreciate any feedback on how to troubleshoot this problem.
MacBook Core Duo / iMac G5 (iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Thank you for your reply!
The Lacie drive did come with a second USB cable to provide additional power. I don't know how you feel about those as opposed to power adaptors to provide additional power. The USB power cable is at my work, so I will have to wait until I go in to grab it and try.
For now, I've done what Lacie support told me to do. From my description they suspected data corruption. So, I have reformatted the drive. In the process, I have turned off the journaling on the drive. That appears to have at least stopped the repeated console message about journaling failure.
Have you heard if MacBooks' USB ports are more underpowered than PowerBook G4s'? I use the same Lacie drive with my PowerBook with no additional power without any problems until I got the MacBook...
Thank you again for your help!

  • Different apple id's on itunes and macbook pro

hello folks. just when i thought i was getting pretty good with our 1 macbook pro we've bought another for my daughter and i'm confused all over again. the question is, right now all apple stuff in the house has the same apple id. when we give her this macbook pro can she set it all up with her own apple id, but use our old sign in/account just for itunes on the new computer? this way it will be 'more hers' but she won't have to lose all the apps she already has. is this possible? and any help on how this will relate to icloud will be appreciated as well. i've asked versions of this question in other forums, but like i said i'm confused. thanks.

I Tunes and I cloud are different things.  I Cloud ID will be for mail, contacts, docs, ect.  I Tunes ID is for Apps, music, moves, ect.  The only problem is if your I tunes ID and I Cloud ID is different you can not use I Cloud for music and I tunes match.  Apple said they are trying to fix the problem and merge Apple ID's to help but as of right now, you CAN NOT merge the two.  If they are different, you will have to back up your phone on your Mac via I tunes like normal until they fix the problem.  I have tried I cloud for music and I tunes match and I must say, I dont think I will use it until they get some bugs worked out.  I do not mind syncing to my mac.  I tunes match should be ready they say by End of October.
    Sorry for the long response.

  • Which files do I transfer from external drive to new MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
My hard drive went bad on my MacBook Pro, but fortunately I did a weekly backup.
Unfortunately, it was not a Cloned back up or a Time Machine backup, so I can't seem to be able to use the Migration Assistant to transfer my files to my new MacBook Pro.
Is there a list of files that I should make sure to copy over?
I know that I need to copy my apps that aren't already native to Mavericks.  Also, most of the files in my User Folder.  Is it wise to copy the entire library in the User Folder, or should I select individual files and folders?  Is there anything else I should look for?
If there is a step by step tutorial on this, and I have somehow missed it, please point me on my way.
    Thanks for any help.

Is it a bad idea to copy things to the library (the one that is located at  macintosh hd/library)?
One thing is for sure...I'll be switching to Time Machine or CCC...this is taking a looooong time.
    So, any ideas out there?
It is too late, but either a bootable clone (I use SuperDuper!) or a Time Machine backup would have made the transition smooth.
I do not know of any "cookbook" approach to help you.
I think I would have reinstalled OS X 10.9.4 and then moved all my data files. I do not know what settings, files, etc. would need to be moved.
