Usb harddrive to airport exteme

I would like some advice on how to use Time Machine to automatically back up my external HD, that's connected to my Airport Exteme.
Another question is: I would like advice on using Time Machine on a second external HD approx. once a month.  This HD will be kept in a fireproof safe & usually backed up once maybe twice a month.  The problems I've had so far with the 2nd question is that Time Machine is looking for this 2nd HD for an auto backup.  When it can't find it it shows error messages & tells me the backup has been delayed because of no connection.
Thank You in Advance.

I cannot see it in the Airport software and am wondering if that is because it is formatted NTFS (was told at Apple store my MacBook would be able to read/write to the disk).
The AirPort Extreme cannot see NTFS drives, and the AirPort Express cannot see any drive. That statement applies when the drive is connected directly to the Mac, and only applies to read access unless third-party software is installed.
I guess this would mean that I would have to create a FAT32 partition, move the music over to that partition and then delete the NTFS partition. Next, create an HFS+ partition and move the music from the FAT32 to the HFS, delete the FAT32 partition and partition that as HFS and rejoin?
Connect the drive directly to the computer, and either create a 350GB Mac OS Extended partition on it with the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, or use a temporary storage location to store the music. After moving the music to the partition, change the other partition to MS-DOS or Mac OS Extended as desired, and copy the music back.
My understanding is that Bonjour will allow my PC to still be able to read/write to this USB device if formatted HFS?
Only if it's being shared from the Mac. To do this on the PC directly, install MacDrive.

  • Can't Mount USB Harddrive through Airport Extreme

Just set up my AP Extreme and while my Maxtor usb drive shows up in the airport utility, I doesnt mount anywhere...any ideas?

I'm using OS 5.6, and had the same problem. Try clicking on the desktop, so that the word "Finder" shows up in the menu bar at the top of your screen, just to the right of the Apple logo. Then click Finder/Preferences/General. Under the item "Show these items on the desktop", check the box "Connected Servers." My external hard drive mounted immediately. Might work for you, too.

  • WRT610N updated firmware, USB Harddrive no longer works

    Hello everyone,
Thanks in advance for any help you may have.  I've seen that a few people have had this problem, so maybe there is a fix.  I have updated the firmware to Ver.1.00.02.10 because the release notes said that it had improved USB harddrive function.  I updated the firmware, held the reset button, power cycled, restored my configuration, replugged my USB drive & turned it on.  I still am unable to access the USB drive.  It just does not show up.
My harddrive is a Maxtor One Touch 750gb, works perfectly when directly attached.  I have 2 pcs (one connected via gigabit and the other via N), both working great.
    Any thoughts?
Thank you so much in advance.

I have had a similar problem. The drive I am using works when connected by USB to my other computers but I can not set up a share with the router now. It use to work, I haven't checked but is there any place where I can download an older version of the firmware?
    Thanks

  • External USB harddrive no longer recognized/accepted

    Hi,
Since updating to Mac OS X 10.5.9 my Mac doesn't recognize/accept one of my external USB harddrives--both are Western Digital ones, which I'm using successfully for more than one year now--, and upgrading to Snow Leopard didn't resolve this issue (see console output at the end).
Changing USB ports--hub, directly on my Mac--is to no avail either.

    Hi,
Well, at least momentarily this issue seems to be resolved, although I quite can't grasp all of it.
I've unplugged the external drive in question, both from the USB hub, as well as from the power jack, waited now for two days, until just a couple of minutes reconnecting everything again, starting with the power supply, and after some seconds the USB followed.
Et voilá the drive is being recognized and mounted again.
Weird, really weird, as I haven't got the slightes clue whatever, when this will arise the next time!

  • USB printer on Airport Express via Bonjour: print queue no longer works

This is a variation of similar postings on this forum, but hopefully provides more information to allow others to pinpoint the problem.
Have been using Intel iMac 10.4.8 now upgraded to 10.4.10. Two printers attached: 1 via USB and a 2nd via USB/Bonjour on Airport Express. Both working flawlessly. 2 days ago, an ADSL Internet outage occurred. When this was reestablished an hour or so later, everything was back to normal, EXCEPT that the USB/Bonjour/Airport printer no longer works. When jobs are sent to it, the printer queue stops and a red "!" appears in the dock on the queue. Restarting the queue just brings back the red "!" again.
Have done all the usual things:
    1. Checked cables, restarted iMac, restarted printer, reset Airport.
    2. Have confirmed the printer works find if moved to a direct USB port. So the problem is not the printer.
    3. Have upgraded the Airport firmware to 6.3. Works just fine as a network access point. So the problem is not the Airport itself.
    4. Have deleted, added the printer, renamed the printer - none of these things helped (this was suggested by some postings on the forum)
    5. Have tried every combination of which item is powered up first (this was suggested by some postings on this forum)
Have confirmed (by checking CUPS Error Log, as well as by Internet Connection Diagnostics) that the problem is that the iMac can no longer connect to the printer when printing on the local host if it is connected via USB/Bonjour/Airport. However, it can find the printer for adding a printer during setup. So Bonjour is working, but the printing is not.
There are lots of similar postings of people having problems with printers previously working, but then stopping working on an Airport Expresss/Extreme. I hope the above scenario, which is a very simple network topology, and the fact that the iMac and printer and Airport all work correctly on their own, is of help. It does look as if the problem is in the Airport Extreme, and was triggered by the WAN outage, and not fixed by printer reinstallation or firmware upgrade.
Looking forward to someone with a clever suggestion...
    LeslieB

What did you use to discover the printers on both Mac and PC. Did you use Bonjour for both?

  • Can't print from Win2000 to USB printer via Airport Extreme

Background: I have an Epson Stylus Photo 820 printer connected by USB to an Airport Extreme base station. My iMac is connected to the base station via an ethernet cable.
Using Bonjour for Windows 1.0.3, I've set up the Epson printer to print from Win2000 in a virtual machine in VirtualPC 6 which is running in the iMac. The setup process for the printer completed OK, without a hitch. (By the way, I loaded the printer driver from the printer's disk, because the driver for the Epson Stylus Photo 820 isn't one of the drivers selectable from the Bonjour window.)
Problem: When I try to print via the route that I set up using Bonjour, an error message appears, stating:
    - There was an error found when printing the document "mhtml.mid://00000047/" to IP-extreme986254.local.9100"\
(Note: extreme986254 is the name of the network I configured in the base station. Otherwise, the network is working OK. Also, my Win2000 in VPC is connected to the internet OK.)
When I re-try printing, I get the same error message.
When I hook the printer directly to the iMac by USB and then set it up as a printer for Win2000 in that configuration, I have no trouble printing to the printer.

  • How do I make my printer more secure while connected via USB to my Airport?

So a neighbor (a friend, fortunately) accidentally installed my printer on her computer via the network (her computer showed it as a 'Bonjour' printer) and started printing stuff, even though my printer is connected to an encrypted Airport Extreme.
My printer (an old HP deskjet 5550) is connected via USB to my Airport Extreme, which has a WPA2 secure password protecting it. Also, the "Share this printer" box was unchecked in the printer utility.
The DSL lines for me and my 20 condo neighbors all convene in the basement somewhere into one or several master routers.
I'm concerned about this breach of security (obviously) and wondering about security of my iMac as well. The iMac is connected to the base station wirelessly and has the firewall set to 'Set access for specific services and apps'.
I figured if the Airport Extreme has the WPA2 password set (and no one else knows the password) that no one would be able to gain access to the printer that is wired to it, or the iMac that's wirelessly connected.
What am I missing? How did this happen? and what can I do to ensure my network isn't visible or vulnerable to my neighbors or others with bad intent?

are there settings in the airport utility that you can adjust to make it unshareable from the router?
The "bonjourness" of the access to your printer suggests that your firewall is probably doing its job.
If your DSL connection is connected to the WAN port on the AE then the folks on the DSL side of your set up should only be able to see things on your LAN that you've set for 'access from the internet'. e.g. allow access to my printer/disk/... from the internet.
For printers there's an airport utility setting 'share printers over ethernet WAN port' and 'advertise printers globally using bonjour'. How's that set?

  • HP Laserjet P1102 print  multiple pages - USB connected to Airport Extreme -

    Hello,
My configuration is Windows Vista/7 - Bonjour Print - HP LaserJet P1102 USB connected to Airport Extreme.
Everytime I sent a print job - it get printed endless times until I hit "Cancel" on the print queue.

    Hi gingerjedi,
It's normal with your actual Airport and confirm by Apple, but ...
Only If you see your printer in Airport Admin Utility under Printer :
    1) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/foomatic-rip-2008-01-30. dmg
    2) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/gplgs-8.61-ub.dmg
    3) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/hpijs-2.7.10-UB.dmg
    4) Repair permissions with Onyx or with your Install Disk
    5) Restart your computer
    6) Restart your connection with your Printer (Cable-Power-Connection with your Airport)
    7) In Prefs Panes, select Printer ( + ) and install a new Printer
    8) Select your indicated Printer in the menu choice. If you have a Name for your Airport, give this Name under Place or Emplacement (excuse, i am French) and select HP Deskjet D2400 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended).
    9) And click Done
With this Solution, you can just print. All other software possibilities can not run under the Airport. It is normal.
I think all is ok for you.

  • Seagate external USB harddrive

i just purchased a Seagate external USB harddrive. in the manual, they say they do not recommend using the HD "to share data between windows and macintosh operating systems". they say i should initialize it for a Mac OS.
i did see a post here that said "If you want to use it on both Mac OS and Windows it needs to be formatted in FAT32 to allow reading and writing from both systems."
has anyone had any experience with this situation? any comments or instructions are welcome

    Welcome to the discussions!
I looked at Seagate's site and couldn't find any reference to not being able to use a drive between Macs and PCs. I really cannot think of a reason why you can't, unless they just do not want to be responsible for supporting that type of use.

  • ITunes 7 and USB Harddrive issue

Everytime I install the new version of iTunes, it drops my USB Harddrive from the computer. The system thinks the drive is empty, yet all my folders are there, just no files. I do a system restore and no iTunes, but I can then see everything on the harddrive. What is causing this? I get an error that says failed to write to drive G: after the install which G: is the USB harddrive. Never had this issue before the update, and can't get back to version 6 now. So of course I can't update my ipod now.

Similar problem - when I upgraded to iTunes 7.0.2.16, my USB connected camera, my pen drives, and my iPod nano all stopped working.
I don't want to re-install my OS there has to be a reason

There are a number of posts related to copying issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

    Thanks for the quick reply.
So am I correct in saying trying to utilise the Airport Express to access the printer over the network was a wasted effort due to the latest iOS? I had read up on the express before purchase and believed that was one of it's main purposes.
    Thanks again for the help.

  • Security issue copying from local USB harddrives to local laptop.

This is strange. My boss has a new laptop and is running Windows 8.1 x64 as a Standard user. I copied a bunch of data from my PC(windows 8.1 x64) to a USB harddrive. I put the USB harddrive on her PC and tried to copy it to her Pictures

Today, I coped 2 files from my PC to a USB flash drive.  I logged into my bosses laptop as Domain Admin.  After inserting the USB flash drive, I couldn't copy the 2 file from the USB flash drive to the laptop C:\ or even to
    the Documents folders.  Permissions error.
What am I missing here...?  even different USB HDs...
