  • Using USB flash drive to connect laptop

On previous versions of Network Magic, when adding a laptop to my wireless network, an option would appear for using a USB flash drive to transfer settings and/or password to the new machine.
After a few "upgrades" to NM, the option ONLY appears after I turn my security off.  If I leave my WEP security ON, the only option that appears is to "copy" the 32-digit password & enter it on the laptop.  However, I keep getting errors.
Is there a procedure to use a USB flash drive to connect a "new" laptop to my secured wireless network?
    Thank you.

    Hi thomas,
If this is your own New Laptop to your Network, and even after you supplied the password, the problem is the Network Lock is still on. You need to disable the Network Lock. Enter the password, installed Network Magic if the Laptop is your own. You need to stop tracking your Laptop as an intruder on your other copies of Network Magic.
Then you need to reenable the Network Lock from your Wired Computer. Use your other computer to activated the copy of Network Magic installed on the laptop.

  • Recording to a USB jump drive?

Does anyone record to a USB jump drive? I was thinking of getting a 64 gig drive for this purpose and wondered if anyone had any experience with this. Thanks....

Locate the music in the Finder and drag the song files to the drive. You may also be able to drag them to the drive directly from iTunes.

  • Encrypting a USB jump drive / Quitting all open applications

    Hi,
    Two quick questions...
    1) I want to password encrypt my USB jump drive so that I am the only one who can get to it's content. I know how to do this using Toast for a cd or dvd. Is it possible?
    2) Is there a command to have all open applications quit?
    Thanks,
    Gary

Get a copy of Truecrypt. It will do what you want, and have the bonus of being compatible with Windows.

  • Will the lightning USB adapter work with regular USB jump drives?

Will the lightning USB adapter work with regular USB jump drives?

    Not really.
Technically, with some USB drives (I've had a 50% success rate) you can import photos or videos off the drive - thi those photos or video follow a very strict naming convention.
But you cannot import anything but photos or video and there is zero support to write off the iPad to the flash drive....so while it technically may work, it's so limited to effectively not work.

  • Can the mac osxlion usb jump drive be used after as a external drive for storing media files

can the mac osxlion usb jump drive be used after as a external drive for storing media files

If you are talking about the Lion install USB thumb drive sold by Apple then no it can't. it has some specail formatting that makes it show up as a DVD drive and is securely locked from any changes.
But I must ask why would you want to. That would destroy that drive and wipe out the Lion installer.
USB thumb drive can be bought for $8.

  • Skype crashes every time I have my USB jump drive in?

Whenever I have my USB jump drive in my computer, skype continues to crash no matter how many times I start it.
When I take it out, skype works just fine. What is the problem? I never had this happening to me before. (I did clean install of Arch recently after messing up xorg on last one)

  • Format USB Jump Drive as Fat32

I want to format a USB jump drive in Fat32 so that I can use it with a Archos 700 (a video recorder/player)
I used Disk Utility to format the USB Jump Drive as MS-Dos File System but my Archos could not "see" the Jump Drive. I also noticed that the Jump Drive showed up as Fat16 via "get info" on my iMac.
    Any suggestions...?

I'm guessing that DiskUtility automatically selects FAT16 or FAT32 depending on the
capacity of the drive. I've formatted large (320GB) HDDs as "MS-DOS File System" --
    and they come out FAT32.
The only thing I can suggest is using a Windoze machine -- or BootCamp/VMware.

  • USB Jump Drive - filesystem errors?

Running Snow Leopard, I have a 2GB jump drive formatted to FAT16 (so I can use it on PCs as well)
I got the following after doing a quick check from Disk utility:
    Verify and Repair volume “JUSTIN_2GB”
    ** /dev/disk1s1
    ** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
    ** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
Invalid long filename entry for /Login Logos
    Remove? yes
** Phase 3 - Checking for Orphan Clusters
    426 files, 154080 KiB free (4815 clusters)
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
So...  Is this a sign of impending doom?  It is not one of those fake/counterfit brand name drives off eBay, I bought it from NewEgg.

That is called a kernel panic. I would not plug that jump drive into your Mac anymore. It has bad Ju-Ju!
Most USB pocket drives are formatted for a PC. Obviously there is something about this one that is incompatible with your Mac kit.

  • Upgraded my PowerBook G4 to Leopard 10.5.8 - USB/Jump drives won't mount

I just upgraded my OS to 10.5.8. Now, when I boot with any attached jump drive it pops up on my desktop for about 10 secs and then gives me a dialog box with a big stop sign w/exclamation point and reads "device removal" - the device you removed was not ejected properly....the 'icon' for the drive disappears and if I try to re-insert it, it doesn't read it. Any ideas why that might be? I have run all the software updates earlier today. What could I be missing?

Thank you so much for the suggestions. You are correct, in 'wiggling' the drive it seems to read and then not read...the jump drive is definitely damaged. I will make attempts to pull files slowly, one at a time. Yes, I wish I had a back up but I don't. I should have burned the files on a CD as a second back up but didn't,my bad. It's okay, I'll have to manage. I'm happy it's not my USB port but a faulty drive. Thank you again for helping me out, greatly appreciate it.

  • Anyway to connect a USB jump drive to the ipad?

Is there an adapter for the ipad that lets you use a USB device?

While the camera Connector Kit does provide a physical USB port, it is not yet clear the scope of devices that might be accessible to the iPad.
It is clear that there is not general USB support
For example, while the USB Camera Connector will recognize a Compact flash reader when attached to it, when a thumb drive with photos on it is plugged into the iPad it says "The attached USB device is not supported".

  • 2012 mac mini does not boot when usb 3 drive is connected

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini, Ivy Bridge, that has a USB 3.0 external hard drive connected to it.  If the hard drive is powered on when I power up the Mac Mini, I get a light grey screen, but never see the Apple logo and the system just sists there.  If I boot the Mac Mini with the USB 3.0 drive connected, but powered off, the Mac Mini boots just fine.  Interestingly enough, if I reboot the Mac Mini with the USB 3.0 hard drive attached, the Mac Mini boots normally.  I have installed all of the OS patches I can find and have not had any luck in resolving this.  Does anyone have an idea what might be going on?

Something to check.  Power everything down.  Turn on
your external drives then do a PRAM zap booting the MIni.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243
It may or may not help.
If it doesn't, then check the system log starting from the time
you start up the Mini and see what the last entry was.   Wait a fair
amount of time so a gap in time in the log can be seen when you turn
the drive off.   Could determine if it is some hardware issue, as BDAqua
was suggesting, or a driver issue.

  • Old firewire/mini USB Iomega Drive, power & connectivity

Hi Sorry I don't come here often and don't know where to post this. So if it's in the wrong place apologies in advance.
We plan to do a lot of travelling now and I've ordered a Mac Book Air, my preference to using an iPad and the Cloud for managing photos.
I've got a couple of older portable hard drives inc a 1TB Iomega which is/was excellent but has firewire and mini usb connection. I understand the Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor is useless for providing power to portables.
Does anyone know if it is possible to double connect the drive i.e. using both the one mini USB and the Tb/Fw adaptor to boost the power and performance?
    Many thanks guys

Well, it turns out that somehow the enclosure was making my drive unreadable. I borrowed my brother's Pismo and installed the drive in it, and it wasn't readable the same as with the enclosure—but it let me format it, and it worked fine after that. But when I put the drive back in the enclosure, it popped up with 'unreadable' again - and it was still unreadable when I put it back in the Pismo again. For some reason using that enclosure totally scrambled the drive's directory.

  • How do you get a jump drive to work on MacBook pro?

I have a new MacBook pro and I am trying to access work from a jump drive and my computer is not recognizing the drive. Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or how to fix it? Thanks!

Have you tried the other USB port? Do you have any other USB drive to connect to see if the port is not working? When the jump drive is connected open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Is the drive listed in the DU sidebar?

  • Slow data transfer to/from USB Jump Dive

I am experiencing extremely slow transfer speeds using a PNY USB Jump Drive on my 2.4Ghz Intel iMac with 4G RAM running Leopard 10.5.8. Same problem no matter what port is used for the connection. This same Jump Drive is blazing fast on my other G4 Macs running Tiger. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Have you tried reformatting it on the newer iMac? Try using the Erase tab in Disk Utility to erase (reformat) it. See if that makes a difference.
Note: Although it should not affect the access speed, the native +partition map scheme+ for PowerPC Macs is +Apple Partition Map+. For Intel Macs, it is +GUID Partition Table+. If that flash drive is formatted for Windows, it may use +Master Boot Record+ with FAT32 formatting. You can see what it uses currently by looking at the bottom of the Disk Utility window with the flash drive highlighted in the sidebar. Such factors may have an impact on access speeds.
Also, if you have a regular USB external drive and try it on both Macs, do you notice any similar difference in access speeds.
