USB Modem no longer working on MacBook

I have been using my Virgin Broadband (Huawei E169) USB modem with my MacBook for the last twelve months. Apart from a huge hiccup when I upgraded to Snow Leopard it has worked flawlessly. Recently I had to restore my MacBook from my Time Capsule as it refused to boot up, and since then I've not been able to use my USB wireless modem. It works fine on my iMac and on my Son's PC Dell Laptop.
When I try to connect, I either get a message that says 'unable to connect to PPP server' or I the 'auto open' closes immediately and I get a huge error report. I have copied the report if anyone is interested, I'll include it on a future post.
I've rung my ISP and Apple Care and have had no success. I've tried a friend's USB modem, and was unable to get it to connect, I also tried mine on her MacBook and got the same errors as on my MacBook.
At this point, I have also checked that I have the latest Mobile Connect and the latest firmware, and have compared files with those on my iMac, and I cannot find the discrepancy. I still don't know whether my MacBook is at fault of the USB device itself. I am loathe to buy a new USB modem, until I know for sure. I don't know what to try next though.
Thank you.

The irony of this problem is that I solved it using a post from here which I'd copied from Whirlpool last year. I'd gone through every solution taht I could find, several times over an in the end used this one which worked perfectly. It was actually my last resort, I'd run out of options. Thought I'd best post back here, just in case someone else has an issue.
This post was found @ www.whirlpoo.net.au by Designed. The OP posted this solution
Thought this was important and needed to be posted here too. I'm up and running again, and very very happy
The solution I found to work is :
1. Open up Terminal.
2. Become root using sudo -i (using your user account password when prompted)
3. Paste the following command in: echo "refuse-chap\nrefuse-mschap\nrefuse-mschap-v2" >> /etc/ppp/options
Next Step
Plug in the device, when the disk image mounts, right click on the app and choose 'show package contents'
Navigate through contents -> resources -> and run the MobileConnect_DrvApp.pkg
Reboot
Then in system prefs -> network
you will see HUAWEI Mobile (not connected)
Add the following settings
telephone number : *99#
account name : VirginBroadBand
password : VirginBroadBand
TICKED Show Modem status in menu bar
I didn't have to change any advanced settings, but to confim them
(In Advanaced Settings)
Vendor : Generic
Model : Dialup Device
TICKED Enable Error correction and comptession in modem
Dial Mode: Wait for dial tone before dialing
Dialing TICKED Tone
Sound TICKED On
Now I connect via the icon in the status menu

  • Apple USB modem no longer works with Mountain Lion

    Now that I've upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion my Apple USB modem no longer works.  Does anyone know of a software fix or have I just lost my faxing ability with this item and have to buy something else?

    That's a very sad situation as the Official statement link above (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3152) states that the modem cannot be used with any Windows. So Apple thinks that people investing in the ability to Fax and relying in Apple's good product only deserves to throw out their modems (because now it is useless on any platform)...

  • 6/9/11 update old usb keyboard no longer works with macbook pro

    Hi I have been using my old Imac usb keyboard with my macbook pro at work since I got my macbook pro. But as of yesterday I have not been able to use it anymore.  Any suggestions to a fix or do I have to buy a newer keyboard?  I need the numbers pad to entering data.
    Any suggestions would b great.

    Your message would be easier to decode if you had proofread it before posting.
    Does your keyboard work when the mouse is plugged directly into the computer instead of into the keyboard, or does the keyboard not work at all? If not at all, then it sounds as though you're right in guessing that the keyboard isn't getting power for some reason (bad cable? bad connection inside the KB? USB port on computer shut down?) If the KB works when the mouse isn't plugged into it, then the mouse and KB together are demanding more power than the computer's USB port can supply, and neither is getting what it needs when the mouse is connected to the KB. In that case, plug the mouse directly into the computer to use it.
    The USB port in your keyboard probably doesn't put out enough power for the mouse you are using. This is typical of older keyboards, which were designed to power old-style electromechanical mice rather than the laser mice that are commonplace today.

  • Apple USB Modem no longer supported

    It appears that the Vista like experience of un-supported hardware continues. Not only does my HP Deskjet F2110 All-in-one no longer work, but my *Apple USB Modem* no longer works either. I doubt it, but is there a work around?

    No work around needed. I have the Apple USB Modem working just fine on my system. I even have it plugged into a USB hub (which some claim won't work but it does). I have tried both faxing and internet access. Both work as they always have.
    And, by the way, making snarky comments comparing OS X to Vista will not win you any friends or much help here either. Just because you have a problem doesn't mean everybody does.

    Hi ..
    Reset the PRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
    Those instructions are for Mavericks but will work on Yosemite as well.
    Then try the USB modem.

    You might want to do a search here on the forums re. usb modems - I've seen several threads and the opinion appears to be that faxing is no longer supported (especially since the "Fax" is now missing from the Print Preference Pane in System Preferences). I am faxing with an all-in-one printer which is connected to a landline, but I have to use the printer's control panel - can't use it from the iMac.

    Yes, it does. Right to where I am supposed to log in, but since the USB is not working (either mouse or keyboard), I'm stuck. I have to shut down and restart and boot into windows.

  • After updating my 3GS with ios5, my BMW usb interface no longer works

    After updating my iPhone 3gs with ios 5, my BMW usb interface no longer works.  I can no longer see my music on the screen and cannot control my music.  I tried my old Nano in my car and that works so I'm thinking it must be something with ios 5.  Any suggestions?

    Update:  I was able to resolve the problem by re-syncing the music on my iPhone in iTunes and then shutting down the phone and restarting it.  After that, I connected the usb cable from my car to the phone and it worked.

    I recently updated to Maverick.  My external Apple Fax Modem no longer works.  I receive a message that it is not connected.  What needs to be done.  I have repaired permissions, and found no error.

    Chances are it is a software-based modem. Update the drivers of the device to Mavericks-compatible driver from the vendor.

  • [SOLVED] USB 3G no longer works after upgrade to GNOME 3.8

    I did the 'big' update today, including upgrading to GNOME 3.8. Unfortunately, NetworkManager no longer picks up my 3G USB modem (which used to work fine before the update). Any pointers as to how I could debug this would be greatly appreciated.
    wvdial has never really worked for me, but gnome networkmanager used to pick up my device and the connection, and now simply acts as if it's no longer present. Attempting to follow the instructions on the wiki to re-setup my USB stick (the instructions I followed in the first place) no longer works. Did today's update cause the same problem for anybody else?
    **Update: After updating today to modemmanager 0.7.990-4 and running
    sudo systemctl enable ModemManager
    sudo systemctl start ModemManager
    I have full connectivity again with the built-in DW5550 mobile broadband card in my Dell Precision M6600 (including showing signal strength in the GNOME 3.8 top bar, etc). Thanks all for the help, and (most importantly) to whoever fixed up modemmanager!

    wvdial might also be a workaround, if one does not like to downgrade. In my case, I had to unset my PIN on the SIM card first. One can do that using a mobile phone, for example.
    Then
    # pacman -S wvdial
    in /etc/wvdial.conf, I put
    [Dialer Defaults]
    Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    Modem Type = Analog Modem
    ISDN = 0
    Stupid Mode = 1
    Dial Attempts = 3
    Init1 = ATZ
    [Dialer huawei]
    Modem = /dev/serial/by-id/usb-ZTE_Incorporated_1_1_Surf-stick_MF19001MOD010000-if02-port0
    Baud = 115200
    [Dialer voda]
    Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","web.vodafone.de"
    [Dialer dial]
    Phone=*99**1#
    Username = umts
    Password = umts
    You can find out your modem name by looking it up with
    ls /dev/serial/by-id/
    In my case there were names containing the strings if00, if01 and if02, and if02 turned out to be the correct one. This depends on hardware.
    Also, in the "Init 3" line, you may have to replace "web.vodafone.de" according to your provider. The section "dial" seems to be quite universal from what I read on the web, so you may not have to change that.
    then
    # wvdial huawei voda dial
    and hope for the best.
    Disclaimer: I do not have a comprehensive understanding of what I did here, but it worked in my case and it might work for you, too.
    I noticed that the Defaults section makes a difference, because the one I just edited in above avoids some delay in dialing.

  • Upgraded to Snow Leopard and USB ports no longer work completely

    Hi!
    So my wife is using my older (from 2007) 15in macbook pro. We just installed Snow Leopard (from Tiger) and the USB ports are no longer functioning correctly.
    Previously, intermittently (between restarts) one of the USB ports wouldn't work well, but restarts always fixed it. This would happen maybe once or twice a month.
    Currently, neither the left or right USB port work well. Both will run a USB mouse and charge an iphone, but neither will recognize the phone or a card reader as plugged in.
    We've tried restarting. Tried turning off, unplugging, removing the battery and holding down the power for 5 seconds and restarting.
    Nothing is working. Does anyone have any tips on how to fix it?
    (The iphone is recognized by my macbook pro, so it's not the wire or the phone, at least as far as we can tell.)
    Thank you kindly in advance.

    I think it's time you upgraded to a newer version of Photoshop.

  • USB modem in network worked, but accidentaly deleted, and now can't replace it.

    I recently succesfully connected a Nokia 6120 cellphone to use as a 3G modem; the last time I used this was in 2009.
    The USB connection and network place in my network settings "migrated" to its proper place when I upgraded to Lion this year, and when I tried the Nokia again it worked, connected through USB.
    There was a second Nokia network choice on the list in my Network prefs, which I deleted, thinking that it was not necessary. After that deletion, the remaining Nokia setting would not connect the computer to the phone, and of course would provide internet access.
    I tried duplicating the old setting, but now I can't select a USB option when configuring it.
    All my research indicates that this is due to Lion no longer supporting USB modems. However, my Nokia worked just fine, and the old Network via USB setting was still present in Network preferences, and worked just fine until the deletion of one of the Nokia settings.
    Does anyone know of a work-around or a patch that will add USB connectivity to Network preferences in Lion?
    BTW... tried connecting through Bluetooth; I can pair the phone to the computer, but it will not make the modem connetion.
    Would the bluetooth transfer rate be too slow, anyway?
    Thanks in advance
    Glenn

    Found the problem!
    Check this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/4028119#4028119
    There are, in fact, modem scripts available, and they go into the Library/Modem Scripts folder.
    By deleting the extra configuration, I deleted the old scripts. I downloaded and installed the 3G Nokia scripts from the website shown in the above thread, and my configurations re appeared in Network prefs;
    I went one step further; I connected to the internet using the restored configuration, then selected and deleted (using the - at the bottom of the list) while the connection was working. It got rid of the second configuration but kept the valid one. Hopefully, It will still be available when I attempt to connect again.
