USB mouse disconnects when laptop on battery

Hello,
I am using Gnome 3.6 on 3.6.10-1-ARCH. Whenever I run my laptop on battery power, my external usb mouse disconnects after some inactivity period. If I plug it to external power source, it again starts working fine.
I suspect there must something in gnome 3.6 (weird optimization) or something to do with laptop-tools which disconnects the usb mouse after some time of inactivity to save power. How to fix this.
I referred this link, but it did not provide me way to fix this.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=49503
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=149530
Update: I noticed that I had not enabled laptop mode tools so problem must be with gnome3. I have now enabled this and set my USB mouse id in blacklist, so that it does not autosuspend. Still It is getting auto suspend.

I imagine that your usb ports control is set to auto... which will suspend the device after a time of inactivity.  The solution would be to have this not set to auto... though I am not sure how to do this with laptop-mode-tools in place.  I don't use laptop-mode-tools, and it is my opinion that it actually makes things harder when you encounter things like this.  Instead of learning where the configuration for this is within /sys and then creating the necessary configuration to change it, you now learn where it is in /sys, what is changing it automagically for you, then you have to learn the intricacies of that particualr power management tool.
So although I cannot help you with yout laptop-mode-tools, the file that sets this is /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb[1-9]/power/control or /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/power without the symlinks on my machine for usb1.
Just my opinion, but with the power that comes in computers these days (for the past several years in fact), having something like laptop-mode-tools is pretty worthless.  If you just have all the settings set as though it were on "battery" all the time, I bet there would be no discernible difference.  I know I cannot tell, and then my computer probably charges ever so slightly faster because it is not set to consume more power when I plug it in.

  • Retina MacBook Pro fan very loud and usb mouse disconnecting when restarting the computer

2 days ago, I got a brand new retina MacBook Pro 13 inch with the specs 2.8 GhZ i7, 8 gigs of ram and 512gb ssd. It should definitely be functioning properly since it's a really expensive computer, but I already noticed a few problems that I hope you can  help me with.
So first of all, when I play World of Warcraft, the fan seems to go up to 6000rpm and is very loud. I checked the activity monitor and it says WoW is using about 60% CPU, so it shouldn't have to be that loud. I also installed smcfancontrol, but it doesn't seem to lower the speed of the fan.
I ran an apple diagnostics test and it couldn't find any problems, and I also tried resetting my smc, but the fan is still going very loud.
And the second problem I have is, that when I have my mouse usb connected to my Mac, and I restart it, it can't detect the mouse anymore. So I'd have to pull out the usb plug and put it back in everytime I turn on my computer. isn't it supposed to automatically connect to my mouse when it's already plugged in?

    Matt,
Try reading this, then go to the section on Resetting the SMC for a Macbook Pro with a battery you should not remove.

  • Why is my USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting?

Our USB mouse has been disconnecting and reconnecting intermittently. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it. We're using a Logitech Optical Mouse. It doesn't seem to matter which USB port it is plugged into. Occasionally when it becomes unconnected and doesn't reconnect, unplugging and plugging it back in will "fix" it. I've been using HardwareGrowler to keep track of this. This was occurring before we updated to 10.7. I may be imagining this but it does seem to occur more when it is running hot.
    Thanks

I have yet to try a different USB mouse to see if it is the mouse itself. I did plug in my iPod and there seems to be no problem with connection there. The mouse will disconnect regardless of tempature and it seems to disconnect more during heavy usage (gaming).

  • Xbox disconnects when laptop connects to network

My Xbox 360 disconnects from the network everytime my laptop connects. I have static IP on my 360 and automatic IP on my laptop.
I tried putting my Xbox on automatic, still didnt work.
I tried putting my laptop to manual - it worked but I can't leave it like this because I connect to different networks (school, home, work, etc).
Other computers/consoles dont get disconnected when I connect with my laptop.
Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

As you are already using static Ip on X-BOX, forward ports 88 & 3074 for the same Ip
    Also try this setting:
    Channel – 1or 11
    Beacon interval – 75

  • USB mouse disconnects randomly, sometimes comes back

ive been having a reoccuring problem with my logitech mouse disconnecting and reconnecting. as of lately it just disconnects and wont come back untill i unplug and replug it in, then it will work for a few more days.  whats intresting is say the mouse disconnects...i can unplug my ipod cable (not attached to ipod) and plug that back in, and the mouse will reconnect.  the computer is in a recording studio, it has a firewire audio interface connected, the mouse and keyboard going to seperate usb slots, an ilok, and my ipod cable.   its a macpro 3.1 running 10.6.8  any thoughts?

Time to take it back in for repairs.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have Sync enabled for all the profiles. To my surprise, however, Sync was of no use in getting Default's extension collection into Shopping. For that I had to resort to the article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox.

  • Disconnecting when running off battery

Everytime i remove my power cord from my MacBook Pro, i have trouble keeping ichat connected, my ineternet it fine, everything else stays connected, ichat is the only problem. It will usually stay connected for only 10 minutes or so, and when it disconnects it doesn't usually tell me at first, my friends will tell me i disconnected about 3 minutes before it actually tells me. I also tryed changing my power settings, to never putting the drivers to sleep and such, but that didn't work. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have the same problem! as long as i am connected to AC power i chat stays connected no problem. If i run off the battery I continualy get disconnected. My disconnects work the same way as yours. the person i am chatting with sees me disconnect right awat but on my side it looks like i am still connected for several minutes. it even seems to accept my outgoing messages without telling me i am discconected.
Its rather annoying. Everytime there is a pause in the chat i find myself asking "am i disconnected?"

  • Magic Mouse Disconnecting When Closing MacBook Pro Using External Display

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I am trying to use it in sleep mode with an Apple wireless keyboard and a Magic Mouse. Everything appears to be connected fine. When I close the lid on my MacBook, I click my mouse and the external display comes on for a few seconds, then it cuts out and doesn't come back. I have the Bluetooth device can wake the computer up from sleep checked. When I have the MacBook open, the external display works fine. I only lose the external display a few seconds after I close the lid on my MacBook Pro.
I have made the Magic Mouse and keyboard favorites and it didn't help.
Does anyone have any idea? I am running 10.6.8.
    Thanks

GaryKing, can you review how you reset the .plist files for both the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse?
I had nothing but good things to say about the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, until I hooked up my 22' Samsung display to my MBP. Power shouldn't be an issue because it's being plugged into the outlet and the external monitor isn't taking power from the MBP. However, my keyboard will keep popping up with the notice "Connection Lost" every 5 or so minutes. Even now, I'm already on the next paragraph but the letters are slowly coming up one by one - it's not registering as fast.
The mouse experienced the same issue if I'm downloading a lot of files, it will lag behind to the point where I'll drag the mouse to where I want it to be, then a few seconds later it'll pop up where it should, that's how bad the lag is. I thought perhaps restarting the computer will do, but no, and also everything is up-to-date so there are no updates to worry about.
GaryKing, if you can go over how you reset the .plist files, that would be much appreciated. By the way, it's past a week since your post, how have the Bluetooth devices been working? Did the reset solve the lag issue permanently, or was is just a temporary fix?

  • USB mouse freezes when external HD is connected

Not sure who to contact on this one.  I purchased some music software from East/West and it came on a Western Digital hard drive.  Every time I connect the hard drive, my mouse freezes and I can't open the drive.  Any ideas???  Sounds like a compatibility issue but the HD is supposed to be for Mac.

    - Have you tried another cable for HD?
    - If you open Finder. unplug the mouse and then plug the HD in does the HD appear in Finder (it has to be formatted for a Mac to appear)
    - Have you tried on anther computer? Either Mac or PC.
    - Do other devices like USB thrumb drive work on the Mini?

    Hi RedTruckMan,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If it seems like your keyboard and mouse are not staying paired to your iMac, first try resetting the NVRAM and System Management Controller:
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • USB Mouse autosuspends after 2 seconds

    Hello dear Community
I have a problem with my USB mouse on my laptop. It autosuspends after 2 seconds when my laptop is on battery power. When AC is plugged in, the mouse works without problems normally. But sometimes (I couldn't find any underling rule for this behaviour) the mouse autosuspends also after 2 seconds when power IS plugged in.
    First things first:
    lsusb yields:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 8087:07da Intel Corp.

So the Mouse I am talking about has the ID 045e:00cb
After unplugging the mouse dmesg gives me:

I thought that laptopmode tools is the reason for the problems, so tried the advice posted on this blog. I made a udev rule

    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="045e", ATTR{idProduct}=="00cb", TEST=="power/control", ATTR{power/control}="on"
and changed my laptopmode tools settings:
    [nikolai@niko-arch ~]$ cat /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/usb-autosuspend.conf

    # For more information, consult the laptop-mode.conf(8) manual page.

    # USB Auto-Suspend timeout in seconds
    # Number of seconds after which the USB devices should suspend
    AUTOSUSPEND_TIMEOUT=2
But I experience still the same issue (after rebooting and unplugging the mouse).
Then I tried to completely disable laptopmode tools with
    CONTROL_USB_AUTOSUSPEND="0"
    and rebooted, but nothing chances.
Maybe I am missing somthing obvious. Thanks for any hints!

    Hi!
I got the same problem with my external mouse/keyboard here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=166517
I tried what you posted, brebs but it also did not work. If I change the power status using powertop my output of your script correctly says:
    1-1.6 auto 480 Integrated Camera
    3-1 auto 5000 Elements 1042
    4-1.2 auto 480 USB2.0 Hub
    4-1.2.2 on 12 Microsoft® SiderWinderTM X6 Keyboard
    4-1.2.3 on 1.5 USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse
    4-1.2.4 auto 480 USB2.0 Hub
but only with my 91-local.rules, which are basically the same as athal postest, the output is:
    1-1.6 auto 480 Integrated Camera
    3-1 auto 5000 Elements 1042
    4-1.2 auto 480 USB2.0 Hub
    4-1.2.2 auto 12 Microsoft® SiderWinderTM X6 Keyboard
    4-1.2.3 auto 1.5 USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse
    4-1.2.4 auto 480 USB2.0 Hub
of course i did udevadm control --reload.
it's somewhat annoying to have to start powertop everytime when you boot your pc with attached external mouse/keyboard.
Note though, I do not use laptop-tools, I do the rest of my powermanagement with udev rules, too.
    [me@mybox rules.d]$ ls
    42-usb_power_save.rules 91-local.rules pci_pm.rules
    80-net-name-slot.rules disable_wol.rules wifi_power_save.rules
    [me@mybox rules.d]$ cat 42-usb_power_save.rules
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", TEST=="power/control" ATTR{power/control}="auto"
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", TEST=="power/autosuspend" ATTR{power/autosuspend}="2"
    [me@mybox rules.d]$ cat 91-local.rules
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="045e", ATTR{idProduct}=="074b", TEST=="power/control", ATTR{power/control}=="on"
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="046d", ATTR{idProduct}=="c051", TEST=="power/control", ATTR{power/control}=="on"
    Thanks for any advice !

  • USB Device Not Recognized on Windows 7 - USB mouse

I have a 4 week old Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 Home premium that has developed an error: USB errors while trying to install a Microsoft USB mouse on this Laptop.   Interestingly, my Microsoft USB Mouse installed perfectly first time and worked for about 2 weeks, and then failed.   In looking at the system restore points, it tells me that there have been two driver updates to the USB environment since the unit was shipped from Dell.   I wonder if an automatic update from Microsoft has somehow inadvertently updated or replaced a Dell factory driver.
Two nights ago I spent 45 minutes with Dell tech support doing remote control bug fixing on this laptop.  They werent able to fix it (in the time allowed).  They downloaded at least one of their newest drivers onto this machine and rebooted it - and they seemed pretty savvy - but still not working.  So I went ahead a did a system restore to a point about 10 days back because I could see that a USB driver would be affected (as shown in the system restore menus), and I would like to compliment Microsoft on this very cool functionality!
At this point, I've unplugged the USB mouse , used the Device Manager to delete the 'unknown device', and done a system restore back to what I suspected was a working point.   But still getting a 'Device not recognized' warning every few minutes, and still don't have a working mouse.  I don't want to have to do system restores back to pprevious dates, although I suspect this is one solution.

    Hello,
I just wanted to let u know, I had this same issue for about 2 weeks. Basically what happened was a bad install of my AMD Chipset drivers. When I attempted to upgrade, the install didn't go all the way through.
I then restarted my system, and BAM! No Mouse or Keyboard functionality thru USB.
Even when I went into SAFE MODE the Mouse and Keyboard were not functional. The only time they worked was when the computer first attempted to start, BEFORE windows loaded.
So, this means that your issue is a software problem.
I thought it was some other software that I installed, and ran a restore session, but that wasn't the issue. Still no functionality.
I even tried removing my CMOS battery, to reset it, since some people said that had solved their problems...Still nothing.
I then read other forums around the web using my Android phone to try and find a solution, only those solutions were no help.
I was also advised to run: MSCONFIG and Hide all  Windows programs and then stop every other driver, source from loading (of course if my mouse and kb worked, I would have tried that).
I had even read that because I was using USB, that I should try using a PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard connection.
It took me 2 weeks to get the correct PS2 adapter that worked, which would essentially allow me access to my system again...
I  Purchased a USB A Female to PS2 (MDIN6) Male Adapter (for Mouse) from http://www.SFCable.com
This my friends, was a lifesaver. I only have one PS2 port on my system, so I used my mouse to try  every option I had previously read about. Of course you cannot type because the keyboard doesn't work, so you need to know the location of the folder where
the programs you are trying to run are.
So, a little after I got back into my system, and I closed down all programs, the warning screen came up that ALL of my USB Ports failed and could not be updated. I even  Uninstalled every last USB port from the System Properties and restarted, and still
    that didn't work.
I had forgotten that during the time when this problem arose, there was a failed install of my AMD chipset drivers, so luckily I had not deleted the source file and I tried to reinstall, and VIOLA! I'm back up and running and my USB ports are restored
    and everything is working!
I hope this solution is able to help other people out there.
    Thanks,
    JE - [email protected]

I moved my old desktop with USB mouse and when I plugged everything back in the mouse has solid red light and won't work. Any idea what I can do?

The pre-1998 Macs this forum covers do not have USB and few can be retrofitted to have it, so I believe you have a newer Mac that has its own more-active forum section. Can you give us more details about your model? People will need to know your model and Mac OS software version to answer anyway.

When turned off, the battery LED is firm, and battery appears to be charging (but which obviously is not the case).  Occasionally, when computer is turned off, the AC LED is lit with a firm light.
One odd thing I noted before this happened was that the computer ran on AC only when my HP printer was connected to one of the USB ports (no battery inserted). If I disconnected the printer USB cord, the computer just died immediately; it was like the computer was powered by the printer. Later I also discovered that the same cord (where it connected to the printer) had melted from extreme overheating. I tried to update the USB drivers for each port but it didn't change things. I also tried to connect a different printer to get the computer started but it didn't work this time. I'd be extremely grateful for any comments that may solve this power supply issue (and if possible explain the stuff with the printer connection).

You unplugged a USB device while the notebook was still booted into Windows and on?
Normally that won't cause any issues but , If you did that you may have damaged your  system board's Southport chip.
USB is not a plug n' play port like SATA  and eSATA are.
Here is a link to the maintenence manual for your laptop series.
Is your notebook still within warranty? By the processor components listed in the manual,I believe it is probably not.
