USB Port not recognising iPhone or External Hard Drives. But working with Flash Drives!! (Both not working) (MBP Late 2011)
MBP Late 2011
OSX 10.8.3
2.2GHz Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3
Yes, Box is checked. I've used many hard drives on my laptop both through firewire and USB I own about 4 hard drives through all different sizes and none of them work (started to happen about a week ago)
iPhone:
No nothing happens when my iPhone is plugged in. No charging, not syncing, iTunes doesn't recongise anything is there and my dropbox account which downloads the photos doesn't see its there, iPhoto and Aperture don't see my phone.
However My Girlfriend has a Macbook (white 2009) I plug everything into her laptop and everything works, chargers and reads. so its not the perferials or cables.
I know how to use Macs and PC very well and I have tried resetting and turning it back on whilst holding
Command>Option>P+R
and un plugged the charger shut it down, plug it back in and turn it on again. but nothing works...

Late 2011 MacBook Pro; one USB port not recognising anything
Hi,
I've had my MacBook Pro since January 2012, so I believe it is the late 2011 13" model. I'm currently running OSX 10.9 although the problem I've been having has been going on around 3 or 4 months, I think I had OSX 10.7 installed when the problem started.
One of the USB ports on my Mac (the one on the left when looking at them face on) is not recognising my external hard drives, or recognising/charging my iPhone when plugged into the USB. The other USB slot works fine and recognises external hard drives, however when I insert the hard drive into the faulty USB input, although the hard drive lights up and starts whirring as if it is ready to start functioning, it does not appear under the 'Devices' tab of the Finder screen, but does appear and function when using the other port.
Similarly, when I plug my iPhone 5 into the faulty port it is not recognised/does not start charging, however if I leave it running and come back later I often have at least a level of increased battery life which suggests that it does intermittently charge from time to time, and again it functions normally when using the fully functional port.
I've tried the NVRAM reset as I have read in another post but to no avail. Is this likely to be a mechanical fault over a software problem, and if so what could be wrong with it?
Thanks for the help in advance.thank you shootist, at least now I know the problem is as serious as I dreaded, but will not loose hope waiting for a miracle and the port works again

USB Ports on Macbook Pro (Late 2011) no longer working...
Hey all,
I know there are numurous posts on this but none have seemed to help me.
Today both of my USB ports have stopped working. Two months ago the one next to the thunderbolt port would go in and out and today both of them just don't work at all except to supply power. I can still charge my phone with them but thats it, nothing is recognized when I plug it in.
I've tried the PRAM reset, the SMC reset, manual reset, regular reset, updating the OSX to the latest and nothing has helped. I've read I might have to replace the logic board but I really hope I don't have to resort to that.
I've posted the reports from the System Information and an app called Etrecheck. Hopefully someone will be able to pinpoint the issue.

1. I live in Atlanta, close enough to an Apple store. But I just know that going there will probably mean I'll have to get the logic board replaced.
2. The only thing I noticed before the first USB port started acting funny was that my battery status changed to "Service Battery". I plan on replacing it this week too.
3. Nope only difference is that my battery drains kind of fast. After about 3-4 hours of my normal usuage with it (Internet, music, videos, and sometimes using Logic) it will be time to hook up the charger.
Would replacing the battery do anything? I'm not thinking it would but figure it'd be worth a shot since I've got to replace it anyway.
And to goofyziggy,
I too noticed that most people who had this problem had some version of OSX 10.8.x -
Left hand USB port not recognising all devices
Hi, I have a MacBook Pro that I bought in November.
I've noticed in the last few days that USB devices connected to the port on the left hand side (i.e. next to power socket) are not always being recognised. So, for example, it sees my iPod and Mighty Mouse, but not my Nikon camera.
What could be causing this? Should I be worried? The dealer is correct in that Apple provide the same specs for each usb port - 500mA. However experience has shown that most often there is a difference between the ports. Apparently there is virtually no margin above the 500mA on MBP's. There may be some other circuitry difference causing the lesser performance from the LH port. It probably doesn't need much to make the difference with plugins close to the 500mA max.
For my optical Logitech mouse the difference seems to be that the mouse must be used on the same side of the computer as the usb module to work reliably though it doesn't matter which port if I'm happy to use it & the module on the LH side of the computer. This is not a problem with the MBP in this instance.
My WD My Book Essentials external drive works fine on the LH side port.
I have not yet seen anywhere any objective test of the power output from the 2 ports. I would be interested in the results.

24in LED Cinema Display not charging MBP Late 2011
Hello All,
My new Macbook Pro (Late 2011) will not charge when connected to my 24in LED Cinema Display. The power indicator on the menu bar says "Not Charging" and the LED in the magsafe cable is dim. Is this a known limitation of the older Cinema Displays?
Thanks,
c.I had the same problem. I found this
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2006045?start=0&tstart=0
.. which suggestes "wiggling" the magsafe connector a little. It worked for me. -
HELP... Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts. Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
Can any one help?

MBP Late 2011 - MiniDisplayport Not Working
I have a MBP Late 2011. I connect my MBP to an external monitor using a Mini Displayport to HDMI converter. Everything was working fine till this morning. I uplugged the converter and hours later when I plugged it back into my MBP, my MBP doesn't detect the monitor anymore. The screen on my MBP flashes blue but it goes back to whatever it was before.
I am sure the HDMI cable is okay because I tried it out on my PS3, so it's possible that the converter is the problem, but since the screen flashed blue, doesn't mean the converter is also okay? Is there a way to check if my MiniDisplayport Port is working properly? This is the only computer in the house that has a MiniDisplay Port. Anybody have suggestions as to how to fix this?
ThanksAt whatever percentage the battery is in now be it 34% or 99% it doesnt charge properly. It just cuts after awhile or if i open like more than 2 programmes. Tried changing charger from 60W to 85W. it is just not charging properly.

2010 i5 MBP USB Ports Not The Same? Griffin iMic Issue
I have a 2010 15" i5 MBP. I got one of the white iMics and it works fine on the port thats closest to the screen. However, when I plug it in to the port that's closer to the SD slot, it doesn't work. Under the audio settings screen, I see the iMic under Input, and the slider is to the right, but the VU meter doesn't register anything. However, when it's in the USB port by the power adapter, it works as it should.
I have read that certain model MBPs have USB ports that are not the same, and some people have problems with programs like Serato when it's plugged into the front port. Traktor and Serato have even mentioned that on the MBP there is one "good" port and one "bad" port.
Curious if anyone else noticed this. Again, it seems to only affect 2010 i5 MBPs.Hi WebBrowser2,
As I understand your query its not a single doubt you are having at all, actually it’s a bunch of multiple doubt you are carrying here in your mind allied to Mac Book Pro (USB Ports are not working). There might be various reasons behind- not working of USB ports in Mac Book Pro, as you already had searched out various ways to fix all your issues. A few months ago, I faced the same issue as my USB port was suddenly stopped to respond, then I also tried to find various ways to get rid of this issue, and I found an informative blog link which has fixed this issue and make me tension free.
For more information visit at- http://www.olmtopsts.com/blogs/when-macbook-pro-usb-ports-not-working.html
And I am hoping- it will assist you in the same way as it assists me. -
USB device not recognised - comes up when I plug i-pod into PC
When I plug an ipod (have tried 2) into my PC I get the message
USB device not recognised
One of the USB devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it
I have tried several USB ports and 2 different connecting cables
Help!!
ThanksTry to restart your computer?
If you have one of the newer iPod's it could mean the service pack is not up to date on Vista/XP
To check your service pack, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
Vista should be service pack 2, and XP service pack 3
iTunes HAS to be updated to iTunes 10 or later
If it is not a new iPod, you could have to update your USB drivers
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 follow that and it should work
If none of those resolve the issue, try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to uninstall all the right components before reinstalling -
USB Device Not Recognised - unable to connect
I am having a serious issue! My ipod was working perfectly, then for no reason i got the error message 'USB device not recognised' from my PC when plugged into a 2.0 port. I am unable to mount to restore to factory settings - definitely isn't a USB connection issue - I have tested the same port with my printer and it works perfectly! When I troubleshoot, The PC tells me that it is an unknown device, and that 'No drivers are installed for this device.' Where can I get Drivers for an IPOD 4th Gen?
This is a shocker! I've now tried the following:
- re-setting iPOD to factory settings
- re-formatting iPOD
- removing then re-installing Itunes, both old and new
version
- resetting the COM thingy
- re-installing iPODservice.exe
- deleting all systems drivers and re-installing
- re-setting iPOD whilst connected
- using old Ipod updater 2004-08-06 and the later 2004-11- 15 version
All I have now is an empty iPOD and a music library with 30gig of tunes within it, with no way of marrying the 2 together. It's been 2 months now and I've really got the hump!
I think that there is a serious defect with either the iPOD or the software - we are not isolated cases! (have you seen how many discussion strings there are on the same subject?)
If you manage to find any other possible fixes, please let us know! In the mean time, I'm off to see about getting one of those new Sony thingys! -
Ipod "usb device not recognised" on one computer but works with another!
I have a 60GB ipod video and a 2GB ipod nano. Both connect fine to itunes on my work laptop but will not connect to my home laptop. They have previously worked fine with the home laptop but now when conected the message "usb device not recognised one of the usb devices connected to the computrt has malfunctioned". I have tried reinstalling itunes several times and tried the usual reset of the ipods etc but nothing seems to work.
If you have more then one USB port, try the other port.

Usb device not recognised by windows 7 on hp pavillion dv5094ea
Im having problems since ive updated my HP dv5094ea from windows xp up to windows 7,
Since the upgrade my usb ports arent functioning, i keep getting an error bubble saying
"Usb device not recognised" - device has malfunctioned
ive tried several trouble shooters including going into device manager and deleting the INFCACHE.1 with no luck, im starting to assume its a driver update issue...
can anyone help?Hi:
W7 should have had the USB 2 drivers native to its driver database.
The only suggestion I can offer is to manually install the Vista graphics driver for your model which may have some motherboard drivers included.
Download and run the file below. You will probably get an unsupported operating system error.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-48969-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
Close out of any error windows. Go to the device manager. Click to expand the display adapters category.
Click on the display adapter listed there. Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the file.
That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp35203. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver should install.
After you reboot, see if the USB ports are working. -
Libretto - USB Device Not Recognised error message
Hi there
I have a workaround for this problem which ocassionally happens. It is just to reconnect the USB hub(as recommended by Windows). I was just wondering if someone knows why this happens and how to fix it. The error is :--
"USB device not recognised. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it.
USB Roob Hub (2 ports) - Unused Port, Unknown Device.
Recommendation: try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognise it, replace the device. "
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kind regards
Julia.Hello Julia
It is always advantageous to mention which model you have exactly. Obviously the external device is not recognized correctly. Check if there is some driver that must be installed before you can use it properly. -
Up until a recent upgrade to Windows XP, iPod Nano has been working fine.
The last few weeks I had intermittent success connecting often involving relodaing iPod or iTunes software.
Now nothing all i am getting when i connect the iPod is USB Device Not Recognised, I have tried all the USB ports, resetting, hard disk mode, obtaining the drivers usbstor which I found mentioned in another thread.
Is there something i have not tried?
I have followed the list in the Apple Tech Pages regarding the iPod not appearing in Windows or iTunes however this seems to be a problem ocurring before that step is even reached.
ideas? Not sure if Time Zones are delaying any responses but I thought I'd add that I have just tried all the old favourites with my Laptop and I am getting the same deal.
Currently the iPod is working and playing music so is it possible my Cable is stuffed and needs replacing? has this happened to others? -
USB Device Not recognised on XP Iphone 3G, but fine on win 7
I wonder if anyone can help me?
I plugged my Iphone 3G into my Work computer (win 7) yesterday and installed Itunes with no problems. I didn't sync or anything, I authorised my work computer as well.
I then went home and the second I plugged it in to me Dell d610 on Win XP is says USB device not recognised. I've looked at various forums and have unplugged and turned off laptop and then uninstalled USB root hubs but it will not work.
I then come into work today and find it works fine on my work Win 7 machine.
It's not the computer as I have 3 win xp machines at home and it's the same with all of them, 1 of them was patched a few days ago but the others havn't been patched since October.
I wonder if anyone knows what it could be?If you have more then one USB port, try the other port.
